BMW IBU WORLD CUP BIATHLON ANNECY - LE GRAND-BORNAND

A message from our president André Perrillat-Amédé

We support winter sports. Both now and in the future.

At Viessmann, we have been committed to winter sports and the environment for generations. For more than 25 years, we have supported different disciplines and athletes. Currently we sponsor three disciplines, one international federation and more than 30 athletes, with the promotion of youth sports being particularly important to us.

And it is precisely because of future generations that the environment is also very close to our hearts: our sustainable Viessmann climate solutions saved 500,000 tonnes of CO2 worldwide in 2019. An important step on the way to 100% CO2 neutrality. Join us in our efforts.

We are especially delighted to welcome the world of biathlon to Le Grand-Bornand for the 4th time and for this much-awaited event. The challenge of organising this exceptional competition, after a year shaken up by the epidemic, has been taken up by all the teams and with the support of 850 volunteers. We will be overjoyed to see the athletes and their supporters at the recently renovated Sylvie Becaert stadium, the only French stadium that can host the competition. I would like to thank the town of Annecy, the Region, the Department, Savoie Mont Blanc and the CCVT for their support as this great event and future events in 2022, 2024 and 2025 draw closer!

BMW IBU WORLD CUP BIATHLON ANNECY - LE GRAND-BORNAND

ANNECY-LE GRAND-BORNAND : biathlon has found its French home...

In the early 2000s, French biathlon had won international recognition, but still lacked a major venue. Since the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992, no major international competition had been held in France, except for the Junior World Cup in 2004 in Haute-Maurienne and the European Championship in 1995 in Le Grand-Bornand.

Métabief, Bessans, Autrans, Chamonix and Le Grand-Bornand were all candidates to host the World Cup. After a detailed study, on 24 November 2007 the French Skiing Federation selected Le Grand-Bornand, recognising the assets of a venue that was also included in Annecy’s application for the Winter Olympics in 2018.

The IBU approved the French candidature and the French Skiing Federation (FFS) asked Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand to organise three rounds of the World Cup in December 2013, 2017 and 2019. And the wonderful story now continues... as we wait for 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Anne-Chantal Pigelet-Grévy – President of the French Skiing Federation

After the sporting and popular success of the previous events, I am delighted once more to see the world biath-lon elite at Le Grand-Bornand just a few weeks before the Winter Olympics. Supported by an ever larger public, the athletes can count on the skills of our professional and volunteer teams from the Organising Committee to perform to their full potential.

François Astorg – Vice-President of the Biathlon Annecy - Le Grand-Bornand Organising Committee and Mayor of Annecy

The Town of Annecy is delighted to be hosting this round of the Biathlon World Cup with Le Grand-Bornand once again. It is a chance to highlight the values of sport and especially of skiing, a symbol of our region and, I hope, an occasion to continue our thinking about the climate challenges our beautiful mountain region is faced with. Let’s preserve it and carry on enjoying it for a long time to come!

Gérard Fournier-Bidoz President of the Thônes Valleys Local Councils Community (CCVT)

After a lost year, Le Grand-Bornand is once again organising major events with the arrival of a Tour de France stage next summer and the Biathlon World Cup this winter. Hosting athletes from all skiing nations, their supporters and large crowds is the kind of challenge Le Grand-Bornand loves. The resort is carrying along and mobilising an entire region in the adventure. The CCVT is happy to be able to contribute to an event which we are sure will be truly exceptional.

BMW IBU WORLD CUP BIATHLON ANNECY - LE GRAND-BORNAND

THE SYLVIE BECAERT INTERNATIONAL STADIUM: A TRIP TO «BIATHLON’S MONACO»!

The international biathlon stadium at Le Grand-Bornand is first of all a name. The name of Sylvie Becaert, a great champion in the

2000s, a native of Le Grand-Bornand and an example for the resort’s athletes. It was natural to give her name to the stadium where the World Cup is being hosted and which had already seen a test run in March 2011 for the IBU Cup finals.

The stadium is the only venue in France that has been given a licence A by the international federation (the IBU) and that meets all international standards, including a firing range with 30 targets, a penalty loop, open and compact cross-country ski slopes, a start and arrival area, as well as spectator areas.

Along with its technical features, the Sylvie Becaert stadium is unique on the world circuit due to its modular design and proximity to the village, making it biathlon’s equivalent of the Monaco Formula One racetrack.

The stadium is totally integrated into the majestic landscape of the Aravis range and close to the public. It is designed to respect the environment to the full.

THE HAUTE-SAVOIE DEPARTMENT AND THE AUVERGNE RHÔNE-ALPES REGION IN THE FRONT LINE«This adventure would be impossible without the strong support of the Haute-Savoie Departmental Council and of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Council,» as the presidents and founding members of the organising committee pointed out. Alongside the financial aid provided by these two major institutional partners of the BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand, over 2,500 school children will be invited by the Haute-Savoie department and 300 secondary school students by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region to pass on to them the values of sport, and encourage them to take up skiing and board sports.

How far we have come since the beginnings of our candi-dature in the early 2000s... And what an event in prospect! This should be a great celebration and the spectacle will be all the more breathtaking since our athletes will be going out of their way to shine in front of the home fans in an Olympic winter. Come along and cheer on your team at Le Grand-Bornand!

Sylvie Becaert – Ambassador for the Biathlon IBU BMW World Cup in Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand. Double World Champion in 2003 and 2009, double Olympic medallist in 2006 and 2010 and winner of the World Cup (Sprint) in 2003, in the Grand-Bornand colours

As the number one skiing area in France, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has hoisted the colours of mountain sports on three occasions at the Winter OIympics. The biathlon is a magnificent sport, filled with traditions which we are proud to support at this World Cup. Good luck to the competitors and let’s all get behind our regional biathletes.

Laurent Wauquiez – President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

Martial Saddier – President of the Haute-Savoie department

After a year and a half marked by the health crisis, we will again be welcoming the greatest top-level athletes for the Biathlon World Cup with undisguised pleasure. Haute-Savoie is a land of Alpine skiing, rich in Nordic plateaus, and the playground for everyone who loves sport and outdoor leisure. Let us be proud once again to be partnering the event!

Building big moments in sport

infront.sport

@infrontsports

Since 1992, Infront has supported the Inter-national Biathlon Union (IBU) and the national federations in hosting IBU events at various competition levels. As marketing partner, In-front has helped develop biathlon from a niche sport into one of the most popular winter sports and will further enhance its premium value and commercial strength in the future.

All about sports

With more than 30 years of experience, Infront is one of the few companies that offers every-thing an event or commercial partner needs. Be it the sale of media rights, TV production, digital content, events, sponsorship, hospitality and consultancy, Infront has developed innova-tive solutions to ensure the success of almost 200 rights holders around the world.

The passionate team at Infront understands the needs of our partners and offers them tailor-made solutions to create the greatest moments in sport.

Sprint: The sprint is the shortest event with the smallest amount of shooting. The emphasis is on speed and performance on the skis. The athletes start one after the other, every 30 seconds. The final result of the race is important, since it decides on the starting order for the pursuit.

Men Distance: 10 km – 3 circuits of 3.3 km with 2 shooting sessions (prone/standing)

+ 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

Women Distance: 7.5 km – 3 circuits of 2.5 km with 2 shooting sessions (prone/standing)

+ 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

Pursuit: Unlike for the sprint, all the biathletes race together on the track. The starting order depends on the classification after the sprint. The pursuit is a very intense race with plenty of exciting developments. With the short distance and the four shooting sessions, competitors can soon find themselves at the foot of the rankings, making this a mentally demanding event even for the most experienced athletes.

Men Distance: 12.5 km – 5 circuits of 2.5 km with 4 shooting

sessions (prone/prone/standing/standing) + 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

WomenDistance: 10 km – 5 circuits of 2 km with 4 shooting

sessions (prone/prone/standing/standing) + 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

The biathlon has military roots and was included in the Winter Olympics for the first time in 1960. The word derives from the Latin «bi» («two») and Greek «athlon» (combat, contest). The sport combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting requires calm and dexterity…

THE EVENTS in brief:

BMW IBU WORLD CUP BIATHLON ANNECY - LE GRAND-BORNAND

Mass start: The mass start is quite similar to the pursuit, but without time intervals at the start. All the athletes set off at the same time. So this is also a tense, exciting race with only the first 25 competitors in the general World Cup classification and athletes with the top five performances in the current race taking part.

Men Distance: 15 km – 5 circuits of 3 km with

4 shooting sessions (prone/prone/ standing/standing) + 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

Women Distance: 12.5 km – 5 circuits of

2.5 km with 4 shooting sessions (prone/ prone/standing/standing) + 1 circuit of 150 m for a missed target

1990’s 2007

20172020

• 2017Le Grand-Bornand organised a third round of the World Cup, with wins for Martin Fourcade and Justine Braisaz in the mass-start.

• 2019 Cheered on by a record crowd, the French team was once again in the spotlight with 4 podiums out of 6 races for Quentin Fillon-Maillet (2), Emilien Jacquelin and Justine Braisaz.

• 2020 The IBU confirmed the World Cup would be held at Annecy-Le Grand Bornand in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Le Grand-Bornand, land of champions, is also home to the biathletes Benjamin Daviet, triple Paralympic champion in 2018 and quadruple world champion in 2015 and 2017, Sophie Chauveau (French team / group B) and Damien Levet (French team / Youth group): the future is secure!

1980s-90s •On several occasions Le Grand-Bornand organised the Alpen Cup, the forerunner of the IBU Cup, a qualifying event for the World Cup. Christophe Vassallo, today

President of the IBU Technical Committee and a member of the Ski Club, took part in it several times.

1995 • For the first time, the IBU organised the European

Championships with Le Grand-Bornand as host. Here, Raphaël Poirée, the winner of the sprint, won

his first major international event as a senior.

2003•Sylvie Becaert was crowned sprint world champion in Khanty-Mansiysk. The native of Le Grand-Bornand

went on to win two Olympic medals, five world medals, the sprint crystal globe and the World Cup during her

career.

2007/2011•The French Nordic Skiing Championships are a

wonderful festive event, rounding off the season each year. In 2007, there was an emotional finale when

Raphaël Poirée and Florence Baverel took off their rifles for the last time before flying away on

a helicopter tour as a homage from the resort to the two great champions.

Le Grand-Bornand was chosen by the French Skiing Federation as the French candidate to organise the World Cup. The resort was selected to organise two

rounds in 2011 – later cancelled – and in 2013, as well as the final of the IBU Cup in 2011.

2013 • Le Grand-Bornand organised the first stage of the Biathlon World Cup in France. The Military World

Games were organised in Annecy. Le Grand-Bornand hosted the cross-country skiing and biathlon events.

LE GRAND-BORNAND, at the heart of the history of French biathlon

Nordic skiing and, of course, the biathlon, have always been part of the great sports tradition in Le Grand-Bornand. Thanks to its athletes and to the resort’s skills in organising top-level events.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of some of the great events that have marked the sport... and the resort.
