Eight injured in Hendrik Potgieter collisionConstantia Kloof — An accident on Hendrik Potgieter Road on the late afternoon of Sun-day 29 September left several people injured.

Fire destroys singlemother’s flatWitpoortjie — A fi re broke out at Mercia Court on Generaal Pienaar Street in Witpoortjie on the late morning of Tuesday 1 October writes MATHILDE MYBURGH.

Residents of the block of fl ats who were at home at the time of the incident, smelt smoke and believed that it was coming from the ga-rage. On further inspection, however, they re-alised that a fellow resident’s fl at was afl ame. There are 18 fl ats in the building.

The fi re is believed to have started just be-fore 11am in fl at number 12. Residents and Mercia Court manager Jaco Reigel contacted Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) but had to control the fi re themselves in the mean-time. Johannesburg EMS vehicles only arrived at 11.55am.

“We’re not sure yet how the fi re started, but we believe it started in the living room,” Reigel told the Record. Luckily the residents, a single mother and her three children, were not home

at the time of the incident.Lizette Delport, mother of three, arrived just

after 12 noon and was devastated at the sight.“I don’t know why I wasn’t contacted soon-

er,” a distraught Delport told the Record, hav-ing rushed to the scene.

“Nothing is left. My whole life was in that fl at.” Dominee Arnold Delport of NG Wit-poortjie was on scene to comfort her and pray with her. “I rushed here because a friend, who lives in Mercia Court, contacted me.”

Mercia Court caretaker Bettie Weyers is con-cerned about the now destitute Delports.

“I hope we can house them in the empty fl at (number 7) in the meanwhile, but we’ll commu-nicate with the owner fi rst.” Weyers says that the owner of the building will be back in Wit-poortjie on Thursday morning.

Anyone who can offer any assistance to the Delports is urged to contact the Record offi ces on 011 955 1130.

Toe hy omdraai, vertel hy, was hulle daar.

Dog’s throat slitRoodepoort — When Jan van der Berg (35) was about to leave for work on 27 September, he discovered that one of his canine compan-ions’ throat had been slit, so severely that for the fi rst time he could see his Cocker Spaniel’s loving heart beating writes TIHAN VAN DER WALT.

The attack is believed to have happened be-tween 11pm the previous night and 1am that morning. The cut was so precise and clean that Jan and his father Albert confi dently dismiss any chance of the wound being infl icted acci-dentally.

Nothing was stolen from the property, but Albert did notice a set of footprints near their property’s main gate – suggesting the presence of an attacker.

“I went to bed at around 10.30pm last night, but woke up when our Pekingese started bark-ing,” says Albert.

It was 1am and Albert found it strange that he only heard one of their dogs barking. Snowy, the Cocker Spaniel remained silent.

The Pekingese started barking again at 4.15am. Although Albert found Snowy’s si-lence strange, he didn’t suspect that the dog was in any form of danger.

The Van der Bergs have been occupying the rented house in Elsenburg Street since Decem-ber last year, and to date have had no problems with crime of any sort – not the usual at least.

ANONYMOUS LETTERS An unknown resident did not give them

much time to settle in though, as between Jan-uary and February, Jan received letters stuck to his garage door demanding that he address his dogs’ barking.

“My dogs bark when they see something suspicious or when people walk past our gate. They are watchdogs and therefore it is normal for them to respond to any odd occurrences,” explains Jan.

Although the fi rst letter from the unknown person was subtle, the second was of a threat-ening nature.

“The letters were written in Afrikaans,” says Jan.

The second letter, according to him, read as follows: “As julle nie plan maak met jul honde se geblaf nie, dan maak ons plan”, which di-rectly translates to “If you don’t attend to your dogs’ barking, then we will”.

After receiving this letter, he went door to door in an attempt to fi nd out who had written the letter.

During Jan’s search, his next-door neigh-bour confi rmed that they too have received such letters. The author, however, could not be traced.

REALITY SINKS INLater that morning (27 September) Jan had

to give the go-ahead for the SPCA to euthanise the pet dog he had loved for the past three years.

This diffi cult decision seemed to be the least painful as Snowy would have had to endure months of surgery and recovery without any guarantee of survival.

Jan and Albert confi rmed that they would open a case at the Roodepoort SAPS, but un-derstandably Jan is still upset.

“I will take the law into my own hands. We have done nothing to cause anyone around us discomfort or pain.”

Pieter Viljoen, Multiplan Risk Consultants (e-pos):Annatjie Nel – My hart bloei vir jou.Ek is ‘n makelaar in Roodepoort.

Never mind die “assesories”.

jou. JY IS NIE GE-RAPE NIE! Jou keel is nie halfpad af gesny nie, en jy is nie as ‘n “has been” in DUBE gelos nie.

Geagte mnr Viljoen

Great mindsIegsaan Ally writes:The old saying goes that great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people.

I suppose one can use this saying in any way to substantiate an argument or just drive a point across. Some may use the saying to sanc-tion skinderpraatjies, or to elevate the topic to the level of open mindedness and an opportu-nity to measure up your thoughts against that of others.

Whatever the reasons may be, it is always ex-citing to be part of a discussion or conversation where intricate subject matter is explored. Even if you are not contributing much personally, you defi nitely are learning from others.

So here we are. A group of esteemed intel-lectuals, or just a bunch of snooty know-it-alls, discussing Diep Dinge! Our opinions, based on solid verifi able research, a television programme or just a book we read, are all we need to be productive in this discussion. Anything goes – politics, economics, science and technology, education, and of course, like all beauty pag-eants, world peace. Then the braai ends and we all go home.

At least we didn’t discuss Pietie’s new car, or Angie’s sixth pregnancy, or the fact that Jabu down the street is extending his house. Again. No. We were civil. Intellectual. Great minds.

Sunday morning we get up, cut the grass, have an oversized lunch and stay in front of the TV until Carte Blanche marks the offi cial end to the

weekend. Monday it is back to work geduldig, gedienstig en gedwee. The cycle starts again.

What happened to the great minds, the great ideas, and world peace?

In most cases the discussion is just that. A discussion. It was fun while it lasted, but now it is all over. Finish en klaar.

On an odd occasion, though, it would spark an idea with someone who would do some further research that results in a life-changing event for them, as well as others. How often do we see new products on the market, a new kind of service offered or some revolutionary new trend? You can’t keep up with it.

I always am fascinated to discover where and when all these great ideas started. What were the people doing at that exact time when they had this stroke of genius? What were they thinking about and did they even plan for it to turn out to be so great?

There are many fascinating stories about peo-ple with their grand and elaborate achievements that have changed the world, and there will be many more in time to come. Nelson Mandela, Richard Branson and so many others may be hard acts to follow, but their lives always will serve as examples of what the human spirit can achieve.

History books are full of everything that those great minds discovered and invented. Little you and I may not be able to live up to them, but in essence we all are just inventing one thing: ourselves!

Olivetti 45 — This Astertjie was stressing her wedge heels off when the tweets came through warning about a hostage and/ or shooting situ-ation at Westgate “Mall”. Just seconds before I spoke to a student friend who told me her friend saw “things” at Westgate Shopping Centre and believes there’s a shooting happening. Now I’m worried. As a journalist, it is my job and my thrill to cover merciless accidents, heavy heist aftermath and informal settlement riots ... but a hostage situation? Would I go?

I scoured twitter to see whether I read cor-rectly. Go to the external links, Astertjie. Now ... Brace yourself.

Phew!Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, is under

siege, you stupid girl, not Westgate Shopping Centre in Roodepoort. Not your area. But what about that shooting?

The metro spokesperson doesn’t know any-thing when you call for information, so you move on.

Sometimes my job can be more merciless than the terrible accident scenes I’ve photographed ... I went about my Saturday and Sunday (my weekend to work, we take turns) covering a lo-cal pet store protest and attending some skyfski-et thing. I didn’t give it a second thought until

Monday morning’s The Star headlines: Terror in Kenya mall.

My heart nearly came to a standstill. Stupid, consumer-driven uninvolved unsympathetic me didn’t even bother to learn that a six-months-pregnant journalist got shot in the mayhem. That could’ve been me. Ghanaian poet and statesman Kofi Awoonor succumbed to the siege, his son wounded. That could’ve been Meerkat. A South African journalist helped a severely shocked woman to a car that drove her off to hospital, never learning her name. That could’ve been Jeanou.

What if my team were there? What if that siege was here?

I can only hope that the Kenyan government gets the situation resolved soon – and that those terrorists are prosecuted for their inhumane deeds. Kenyan civilians and tourists have nothing to do with your war, people. They have no infor-mation, so move on.

My deepest admiration goes to journalist Tom Kirkwood for helping that woman. I hope you learn her name. I hope she learns yours.

I hope my middle-class, mediocre fears are overcome so I can become one of the great ones. What a lie it really is, Owen: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.

Trish Stones (email):I am deeply disheartened by the state of certain parts of the West Rand.

I stay in Horizon View and read the article regarding the street litter, which stems a great deal from Horizon View Primary and West Ridge High School.

Is anyone from the schools or the Munici-pal Departments doing anything to prevent this ? Street vendors are selling cigarettes to

our school children (maybe even more harm-ful things). Have we all just given up? The fi elds close to the two schools are an eyesore, grass doesn’t get cut neatly anymore ... What is hap-pening to our lovely West Rand??

I would love to be able to arrange a commu-nity clean-up project. Perhaps the Roodepoort Record would be willing to advertise something like this ? Lets start setting an example to our youth of day.

Goldman Streetrubble burnsFlorida — A resident informed the Record of a fi re she had witnessed while travelling on Goldman Street on the morning of Monday 23 September.

The resident sent photos to the Record with-out comment or complaints. of the aftermath of a fi re and a fi retruck on scene Getting in touch with this resident after her email proved an impossible task, so the Record journalist set out to see what was being done about the fi re.

It is uncertain at what time the fi re broke out

at 43 Goldman Street.According to Nana Radebe, Joburg Emer-

gency Services (EMS) spokesperson, it was not a big fi re. “It wasn’t a life-threatening situ-ation. “With the fi re brigade’s arrival on scene they found that it was just old rubble and old clothes burning on an empty lot.

“The fi re brigade took control of the fi re and extinguished it before anyone got injured.”

The JMPD and Florida police could not comment on the incident yet.

Florida’s water running again

Florida — After a resident’s despondent email to the Record about Florida water issues it was learnt that Florida’s water is fl owing once again.

The resident wanted to log a problem with his water supply since Monday 23 September but allegedly was unable to log it with the City of Joburg (CoJ) helpline.

“Are you aware of what’s happening with the water supply in Florida?” he asked the Record, complaining about the helpline and service at the Civic Centre.

“All they could do was refer me back to the useless helpline,” he wrote in the email.

“Since Monday, we’ve had access to water only for around two to three hours a day.”

According to Caleb Finn of Our Neighbour-hood Florida, some Florida residents’ water supply seemingly was cut off on Heritage Day (Tuesday 24 September).

Finn believes that most of the complaints came from Florida South, but a resident of Florida Lake also had some concerns. He and

DA Councillor Dave Dewes ascribe this to a pipe that burst on Main Reef Road on Tues-day, according to their correspondence with Joburg Water.

“Dewes helped us to communicate with Joburg Water and the water seemed to be back on by Tuesday night, after they apparently fi xed the burst pipe,” Finn told the Record.

“Yet on Wednesday, people still were experi-encing problems.”

Finn said that he learned that the pipe had burst again on Wednesday. Joburg Water was contacted yet again to tend to the problem. There were rumours that something else was wrong with the main supply lines.

“Around midnight on Wednesday the wa-ter was fl owing again,” said Finn, unsure of whether more problems would arise in the near future. Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe was not available for comment.

Finn reminds residents that they can contact the CoJ helpline, should they experience any service problems. Residents also can log their complaints via email at [email protected], or online at www.johannesburgwater.co.za.

Helderkruin — A collision between a bakkie and motorcycle claimed the life of yet another biker on Wednesday afternoon, 25 Septem-ber.

Vanessa Jackson, ER24’s crisis communicator says, “A man in his 40s was killed while a woman suf-fered moderate injuries after a bike and bakkie collided at the corner of Wilgerood Road and Ruhamah Drive in Roodepoort.

“The force of the impact between the two vehicles was so excessive that the bakkie overturned.

“When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man in his 40s injured and they initiated resuscita-tion efforts in an attempt to revive him. However, there was no change in his condition despite their efforts and they had no other option but to declare the man dead on scene.

“The woman who had been the only occupant of the bakkie, had been ejected partially from the ve-hicle as it overturned and a part of her body was trapped between the tar and the vehicle.

“Paramedics and rescuers to-gether lifted the vehicle after which she was removed safely. She was in a stable condition and transported by ambulance to Life Flora Hospi-tal under Advanced Life Support care. At this time it is not known who was at fault in causing this fa-tal collision. Local investigators at-tended the scene and will gather all the necessary details pertaining to the cause of the crash.”

According to an eyewitness, Sak-kie Botha, “The biker attempted to cross the intersection probably thinking he would make it because the traffi c light was still yellow”.

Loaded truck overturnsMaraisburg — According to a recent ER24 report, a large truck overturned on the corners of 9th Street and Shamrock Road on the morning of Saturday 21 Septem-ber. On paramedics’ arrival, they found a large truck and container lying on its side near the intersec-tion.

“They quickly assessed the scene to determine whether there

were any other vehicles involved but found that only the truck was involved,” says Vanessa Jackson, ER24 spokesperson.

The report further states that the driver of the truck was stand-ing at the scene and had sustained minor injuries. He was assessed by paramedics and later transported to the Discoverers Clinic in Rood-epoort for further medical care.

Woman lucky to be alive ...Helderkruin — A friend of the woman who was injured in a col-lision with a motorcyclist last week says she escaped death.

On Wednesday afternoon 25 September a man believed to be in his 40s sadly died following a collision with a bakkie at the corner of Wilgerood Road and Ruhamah Drive.

The woman (51), according to ER24, was the only occupant of the bakkie and she was ejected partially from the vehicle as it overturned. A part of her body was trapped between the tar and the vehicle. She was extricated and quickly transported to hos-pital.

A close friend and housemate of the woman, Francois van Wyk, told the Record, “I am not religious, but my God, she was so lucky. She experienced three miracles, otherwise she could have been killed – considering the bakkie rolled twice.”

Van Wyk reckons that had it not been for the pillar of the vehicle, specifi cally the B-pillar, which is the second pillar of

the passenger compartment that plays an important role in protecting the occupants in a roll-over incident – according to diseno-art.com – his friend’s skull would have been crushed.

“The biker’s body hit the bak-kie 10cm behind her (fi rst mira-cle) and his helmet made contact just behind her head, so the pillar saved her from a certain death (second miracle),” he said.

“On the fi rst roll the roof was dented. When she was fl ung half-way through the window, the bakkie fell on her with the dent over her waist and chest (third miracle),” Van Wyk added.

Van Wyk also told the Record that in the accident, “Amanda’s neck was broken with move-ment impaired at and damage to her C5 and C6 vertebrae. She underwent emergency surgery on Friday 27 September and her hand also was operated on. She will spend a week in the Inten-sive Care Unit (ICU) with re-constructive surgery planned for next week.

“It’s a miracle from God.”

Police releases photos of ATM bombersHelderkruin — The Roodepoort SAPS has released images of some suspects responsible for the Absa ATM bombing at West Ways Shopping Centre in Helderkruin in August.

Security staff said there was nothing they could do as three men held them at gunpoint and managed to bomb the ATM early on Saturday morning 24 August. The suspects then fl ed with a large amount of cash. No one was in-jured.

According to Roodepoort SAPS spokesperson Vincent Mashiteng, “The Gauteng ATM Investigation Unit is looking for the men in the pictures for ATM Bombing Rood-epoort CAS 1035/09/2013.

“The men used explosives to blow up the Absa ATM and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects are still at large and investigations are under way.”

Two men wanted for murderRoodepoort — Roodepoort SAPS is looking for two murder suspects for a crime committed on 27 Au-gust in Tshepisong Phase 6.

The two men entered a house and assaulted a 29-year-old man in Durban Deep, Roodepoort. The victim died in Leratong Hospital two days later two days later. The man in the pic-ture (murder suspect 1) is known as Thembinkosi Ncube (23) and the second man (murder suspect 2) is known as “Nkosi”. Both suspects are from Zimbabwe and they are believed to be in the Durban Deep area in Roodepoort. The suspects are still at large and investigations are under way.

Protestors move on toWestgate’s Pet SuperstoreWestgate Park — Animal activists from the West Rand and beyond unit-ed at Westgate Shopping Centre where they protested against the practices of pet shops, in particular Westgate’s Pet Superstore, on Sunday 22 September writes MATHILDE MYBURGH.

In light of the recent protests held in front of various pet stores in Johan-nesburg, one specifi cally in front of the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm on 27 April this year, Ban Animal Trad-ing South Africa (Batsa) and Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) organised their seventh protest this year in front of Westgate Shopping Centre.

Though much less complaints about the Westgate Pet Superstore have sur-faced in comparison to the other shops targeted, the Batsa/ BWC protestors stood strong and gathered on an is-land between Ontdekkers Road and the shopping centre’s parking lot at around 11am on Sunday.

The same ‘adopt, don’t shop’ and ‘we don’t need your freakin’ store’ chants could be heard echoing from the protestors. Passers-by and motorists were asked to make noise (and hoot) if they agree. Pet Superstore manager Morné Mustard told the Record jour-nalist who was on scene for the protest that he had to inform security guards of the protestors leaving pamphlets on vehicles in the parking lot.

Despite it being a legal protest, with JMPD consent and attendance, “the protestors infi ltrated the parking lot the moment they got here”, which al-legedly is against the original agree-ment between the protestors and cen-tre management.

told the Record that they “target all pet stores that sell animals.

“We do not believe that pet shops that sell animals promote or encourage responsible pet ownership.”

Spagnoletti encourages cooperation with the SPCA, saying that “at least the SPCA will make sure that those animals receive their vaccinations and medical care.

“The SPCA also will ensure that these animals are micro-chipped and sterilised before they are homed.”

Mustard, who stood on the stairs of Entrance 5 of the shopping centre looking on to the protest said, “Both the owner and I agree with 75 per cent of what their argument is.

“We don’t sell puppies or dogs from breeders but specifi cally try to help to home those ‘oopsies’ that the commu-nity have no other solution for.

I understand that they have to start somewhere but I believe this shop pro-motes responsible ownership and that it isn’t necessary to demonstrate here.”

Mustard mentions that previous initiatives that the Pet Superstore have proposed to the Roodepoort SPCA to help home their animals quicker have been turned down due to the fact that “the SPCA doesn’t want to be associ-ated with any pet store that sells live animals. “If they would only budge a little, this store could help them pro-mote adopting instead of purchasing, and it could help to home dogs that won’t be homed otherwise.”

Spagnoletti could not ascertain whether the two organisations in-volved have been in contact with Pet Superstore’s owner because she was not involved in the arrangements made for the protest.

Aria! Opera for Everyoneextended until 2015Roodepoort — Tenor Stéfan Louw was proud to tell the Record that his own production, Aria! Opera for Everyone, will be back for two more seasons at the Roodepoort Theatre until 2015.

Stéfan decided to start producing his own opera concerts as an independent producer in 2010, and says that it has presented its diffi culties.

“Opera is a tough industry to be in.“I don’t think the public realises

what goes on behind the curtains to produce a successful show.

“As an independent producer I use my own funds to rent the theatre and not all concerts yield the same revenue, which sometimes means that I pay cast members from my own pocket.”

Louw says that he plans to prevail despite the diffi culties, and apparently has been successful to date, manag-ing to bring back his show to the Roodepoort Theatre for two more seasons. He wants to develop a stable opera audience in Gauteng and to en-sure that full, beautifully orchestrated opera productions are back on stage at the Roodepoort Theatre.

Louw launched his own Youth Au-dience Development Programme for Opera in April this year.

He says that the idea for the pro-gramme came about when a patron purchased 10 tickets to hand out spe-cifi cally to previously disadvantaged individuals.

“I will continue this project at all future concerts because not only does it work towards a new generation of opera audiences but it sparks interest in opera, which can yield future opera stars for the art form.”

Louw’s plans are to stage a full op-era with a complete orchestra by De-cember 2015.

“I need to decide which opera and then start to secure funding for the project.”

Louw plans to set up auditions for the 2015 shows by the end of the year.

The next Aria! Opera for Everyone show will feature baritone Aubrey Lodewyk on Friday 4 October at 8pm. Tickets are available at Computicket.

“Ongelukkig kan ek net soveel as beloning bied.

Mr ADT educates toddlers on crime and safetyConstantia Kloof — Don’t touch a hot stove, never play with a gun or fi re, and don’t even think about talking to strangers writes CLIN-TON BOTHA.

These are only some of the im-portant lessons taught to toddlers at a Mr ADT Children’s Security Educational Show at Tjokkers Nursery School in Constantia Kloof on Thursday 19 September.

According to Nicole Kairuz of ADT, “This is one of three inter-active home safety skills shows for pre-primary and primary school children, which is run by ADT Se-curity and hosted by well-known Johannesburg entertainer, Darrin McDowall.

“The overall concept of the show focuses on personal safety, including children’s not putting tablets or anything in their mouths without fi rst asking their parents, dangers in the kitchen, electric-ity safety – not touching or pull-ing at plugs-not playing with fi re, matches, lighters or candles, the danger of playing with guns, how to behave around dogs, and home invasion – what to do if a stranger comes into your house.”

Other topics include what is good touching and bad touching, how to use a panic alarm button, never to open the door to a stran-ger, and the importance of know-ing a parent’s contact details and other emergency

numbers, such as the number of their security company and the South African Police Services (SAPS). “The fun-fi lled show has been rolled out successfully in Gauteng and in the Western Cape, receiving rave reviews from teach-ers and pupils,” Nicole added.

“Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers in our society. Darrin has a fun, friendly way of address-ing these pertinent issues. He has found the happy medium as this show keeps the children both in-formed and entertained.”

All the shows are presented to the schools by ADT, free of charge. To book a show, contact Tamryn Carr on 086 12 12 400.

mense se swaarkry in haar skilderye uitbeeld.

Lady Gaga.

Mr ADT or well-known Johannes-burg entertainer, Darrin McDowall.

FLCC’s dragon boat team finishes thirdFlorida Lake — The Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) 18-man dragon boat team took third place in the mixed category during a dragon boat race hosted by the Florida Lake Dragon Boat Association recently.

Despite the rather miserable weather on Sun-day afternoon 22 September, participants ar-rived in large numbers to compete.

“There was a variety of dragon boat races with a good turnout and a fun-fi lled festive at-mosphere despite the weekend’s cold front that brought grey overcast windy and cold weather to Roodepoort,” FLCC’s Jennie Dallas said.

“Spectators huddled in the clubhouses and under blankets, sipping hot drinks while the brave youths from the Chinese Dragon Boat As-

sociation, Parys’ Dome team, a Pimville team, EMS cadets, a Roodepoort Running Club team and various other teams participated to race against 10-man and 18-man crews in frenetic and enjoyable team-building races.”

It seemed a good day at the offi ce for FLCC as the Florida Lake Dragon Boat Association’s team won the 10-man open category.

FLCC unleashes fi ne mixed pair for FishFlorida Lake — The Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) unleashed another interesting canoe-ing partnership at the Fish River Canoe Mara-thon that commenced on Friday 27 September.

This after it was announced that the young Archie Moncho and Karima Hare – probably the fi rst black woman paddler to participate at the event – partnered in the K2 mixed doubles category.

“Archie and Karima are a nice combination. They fi nished on the podium (third place) in the mixed doubles category at the East Rand Kayak Vaal River race in mid September, not to mention they completed a recent time trial in just 55 minutes,” says FLCC spokesperson Jen-nie Dallas.

“They really are looking good for a success-ful and enjoyable Fish River experience,” Jennie added.

Karima has been a member of FLCC since 2005 when she started canoeing recreationally and socially. Over the years her tenacity and endurance proved her strength in the long dis-tance events and she eased into marathon races and river racing.

She became the very fi rst black woman pad-dler in Gauteng to obtain her river profi ciency in 2010 and has been enjoying learning about rivers and rapids since. Although wary and cau-tious, she enjoys the adrenalin rush and adven-tures of the rivers.

Archie, also a long-standing member of the community youth development programme at Florida Lake, who attends Victory House Pri-vate School thanks to sponsorships and bursa-ries, is still an U/18 junior paddler.

Tata Xenon a shining lightThere are two ways of looking at the new Tata

Xenon XT. You can either see it as a direct competitor to the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger

and Volkswagen Amarok, or you can accept the fact that it’s still a real bakkie and will therefore never be as comfortable or luxurious as the market learders.

Allow me to explain the ‘real bakkie’ statement. The fi rst bakkies were built to be nothing more than workhorses for lugging stuff around, but over the years they’ve grown into symbols of wealth and prosperity.

I come from a mining community and over there you were nobody if you didn’t have a double cab. It’s more or less the same thing in Jozi, where bakkies are now used to transport children rather than manure.

There’s nothing wrong with this. The modern bakkie is more than capable of leading an inner-city life with its leather seats, air conditioning and squishy suspension.

This natural progression has left a gap in the market. A decent derivative from one of the leading mainstream manufacturers will cost you far over R400 000 these days. It’s defi nitely worth it, but it’s still not exactly cheap, is it?

That’s where the GWM Steed, Foton Tunland and the subject of this week’s missive - the Tata Xenon XT - come in.

The upgrades to the Xenon you see here come courtesy of Tata’s customers. The owners spoke and Tata listened. It’s a great way of doing busi-ness, I think.

The biggest change by far is the powertrain. The XT is powered by a new 2.2-litre VVT Dicor engine with 110kW and 320Nm on tap. These fi gures, however, tell only half the story. Driving it, you can feel that it’s a modern engine that wouldn’t be out of place in one of the mainstream bakkies. The torque curve is quite fl at, which makes the XT a nice companion on all road surfaces.

On the subject of driving, it’s here where you notice the main difference between the Tata and its more established rivals. The Tata is still very much a bouncy bakkie. It feels agricultural, which I don’t think is a bad thing. It may not be the most comfortable bakkie ever made, but it has a robust quality that I think all bakkies should have. It cer-tainly felt strong enough to cope with even the most

diffi cult farmer or miner or builder’s demands. On the inside, it’s all very plastic fantastic, but

once again it’s built to cope with a rough life. You do get a lot of equipment as standard though. On the safety front, you get dual front airbags, ABS, a collapsible steering column and remote central locking with an engine immobiliser.

On the luxury front, things get very interest-ing. On the single- and double-cab 4x4 models you get electric windows, power steering, Blue-tooth connectivity, a radio/CD/MP3 player with a USB port and, wait for it, navigation. You can see it’s an aftermarket system, but it works

GERHARD HORN

very well and has all the functionality one could possibly hope for.

Tata has a lot of faith in this product. That much is clear from its estimated sales for the XT and the warranty and service plan you get as stand-ard. Every model in the line-up comes standard with a 5-year/90 000km service plan and 4-year/120 000km warranty. In this instance, it easily matches its more expensive competitors.

But what about the price? With such signifi cant upgrades you’d expect a signifi cant increase in price, but, fortunately, that’s not the case here. The price of the double-cab 4x2 (the big seller)

has only increased to R239 995. That’s more than R100 000 cheaper than some of the big boys.

To compare it to those competitors is daft, though. Yes, it’s not as good as them, but for R100 000 off, should you really care? Whichever way you look at it, the Tata Xenon XT is a good bakkie, but at this price, it’s great.

GWM starts hitti ng sixes with C20R

•ad

GERHARD HORN

THIS WEEK marks a momentous occasion in my life, because I’ve fi nally found a Chinese car that I’m not only willing to recommend, but that I’d be happy to live with myself. It’s taken a while, but it seems the fi rst Chinese product is fi nally there.

By ‘there’ I mean the place where we were all hoping they’d go. And by that I mean the regular use of the phrase ‘the products keep getting better, but they’re just not there yet.’ I should know; I’ve used it before.

Now I don’t know where ‘there’ is, but I’m assum-ing it’s a place with style, nice engines and decent interiors that don’t overpower you with the smell of melted-down horseshoes. An affordable price tag is also something people appreciate over ‘there.’

The GWM C20R is ‘there,’ wherever that is. It has all of the above and it’s not even that expensive. At this point I’d like to congratulate GWM, but I also have to admit that I’ve suspected for a while that this manufacturer would be responsible for

building the fi rst Chinese product that I actually wouldn’t mind to own.

Sure, there are a number of decent products from rival companies and some of them I’d also recommend (the Foton Tunland springs to mind), but they’ve never featured very high on my list of stuff I’d like to park in my garage. GWM slowly but surely changed my outlook. It started with the Hover, which wasn’t all that bad. In 2010 it moved on to the not-so-horrid Florid. Last year I drove the C10, which turned out to be a viable option in its segment. And now this C20R.

The C20R makes a really good fi rst impression. I’ve seen it in photographs, but a 2D image simply doesn’t do this car justice. In the fl esh it’s a nice mix of funky, chunky and spunky. I don’t want to hover on this subjective topic for too long, but it’s fair to say that the C20R not only looks good, but it looks better than a lot of other cars you can have for the same price.

Engine-wise you get a pleasant 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol with 77kW and 138Nm on tap.

It does an amicable job of lugging the C20R’s 1 120kg body around town and on the highway. I spent a few hours behind the wheel in a number of different driving situations and the engine never felt underpowered. It’s far from being spirited, but that’s not exactly the point, is it? Let’s rather focus on GWM’s impressive claimed combined fuel-con-sumption fi gure of 7.7 litres/100km, not bad for a windgat pseudo-SUV.

Then we get to the part that has been the downfall of many Chinese products - the interior. The C20R’s interior is by far the best one I’ve come across. Qual-ity is perfectly acceptable and the plastics seem like they’d survive anything the average South African can throw at them. Even more importantly, it looks good in there. I like the funky layout of the centre console, but I love the red and black leather seats. They go a long way in making the C20R’s interior a very nice place to spend time in.

GWM has also ensured that spending a signifi cant amount of time in the C20R wouldn’t be a burden. As standard you get air conditioning, reverse park

assist, electric windows all-round, remote central locking, ABS, EBD, power steering, dual front airbags and a radio/CD/MP3 player with USB and auxiliary inputs. It’s worth mentioning that the sound system is exceptional at this price point. It coped fairly easily with my music of the angrier variety, which is something I don’t often come across in a car of this ilk.

Before I start sounding too much like a GWM salesman, I’d like to point out a fault or two. The boot is a bit on the small side and the upwards adjustment on the steering wheel isn’t enough. In my driving position the steering wheel obscured the top of the dials and a centimetre or two extra would have sorted the problem.

Otherwise it really is a properly good little quasi-SUV. It hasn’t been collected yet, but I have the sneaking suspicion that I’m actually going to miss it when it’s gone.

So, fi nally we have a Chinese manufacturer that’s ‘there.’ I still have no idea where ‘there’ is, but I do know it’s GWM that got there fi rst.

I WAS fortunate enough to see the Ford EcoSport in concept form at the 2012 Delhi Auto Show in India. There was a lot of hype surrounding the vehicle, particularly because of its engine.

The powerful 1.0-litre EcoBoost is the smallest in its class with an engine block the size of an A4 piece of paper. It’s no wonder then that it forced us to change our perceptions of small engines. I’ve had to wait over a year and a half to fi nally see it in production guise and drive it.

So when it fi nally arrived, I decided to take this little engine on a big adventure. Doing well over 2 000km in the week we had it on test, I wanted to like the EcoSport from the get-go.

Ford pumps up EcoSport with EcoBoostThe styling is fresh and an escape from the

mundane, while still embodying Ford’s design philosophy. And while the SUV may be relatively diminutive in size, its clever cabin design means that there is a sense of space so you can commute in relative comfort.

The only thing I’m not a huge fan of is the fi nish. Built in India, it leaves a lot to be desired, but the long list of standard features in our Titanium-spec model more than made up for this.

It’s equipped with, among others, cruise control, climate control and the now-renowned Ford SYNC, the voice-activated in-car connectivity system pow-ered by Microsoft. Once you learn how to operate it, it’s a real breeze to use.

Luggage loaded and the urban SUV fi lled with

occupants, we headed out. The manoeuvrability is what you would expect from a vehicle of this stature, but it’s rather comfy on the open road and we even managed to do a spot of gravel driving, where this B-segment vehicle on stilts was more than content.

During the exploration, I grew fond of my modern American. It’s a vehicle with a lot of promise and it seems like Ford has perfected the art of downsizing.

Its little three-cylinder powertrain produces 92kW of power and 170Nm of torque, fi gures usually asso-ciated with bigger, more traditional 1.6-litre engines.

Across the rev range, the EcoBoost motor gains speed quickly and devours hills. It’s hard to fathom that there is such a small turbocharged engine delivering such sporty performance.

But I have a gripe, because Ford claims a fuel •ad

consumption of 5.7 litres/100km for this two-time International Engine of the Year. I know this fi gure is claimed under ideal driving conditions and so on. However, I managed to achieve only 8.2 litres/100km with plenty of highway driving and cruise control set to the national speed limit, a far cry from the claimed fi gure. I suppose that’s probably the most disappointing aspect: despite my best efforts, the EcoSport’s fuel fi gure remained in the above-eights. Maybe it’s because the little powertrain has to work that much harder.

I’m still a fan of Ford’s small urban SUV, because it showcases the future of engine technology in one handy and rugged package. The only concern I’m sure many South Africans will have is how long the engine will last in our hot climate.

JMPD NEEDS A BIG BACKSIDE KICK

Dear Editor,

With reference to your article Do something about road carnage in week 38’s issue, as long as we have traffi c management that sit on their backsides in offi ces and not get out and check on their offi cials, nothing will change.

If the JMPD is the best or worst example, then it’s obvious why things are as they are. If spokes-man Wayne Minnaar was out of his offi ce in an unmarked vehicle checking on these lazy morons and kicking backsides into action, things might possibly improve. When I see JMPD vehicles travel-ling back to Marlboro depot at 3:30pm, my blood

boils. These things should be out in the traffi c, stopping the lunatic minibuses and Putco and metro buses that ignore all traffi c rules at this time of day. It’s bl atantly obvious that the offi cials in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga are the cream of the crop. They are extremely effi cient behind their cameras, but can they do a traffi c offi cer’s job? I very much doubt it.

AnthonyDear Editor,

Riana Book’s letter Trucking an irresponsible mess in week 39’s issue refers.

I’m a 38-y ear-old male and have been a truck driver for the last 20 years (code 14, or EC, as it’s called these days). I also got my 50cc motor-cycle licence when I was 16 years old. Although I agree with some of the statements she made, I disagree with the fact that a person should have a grade 12 certifi cate to drive a truck. That’s bull. I have a bad grade 10 certifi cate and I can read and write better than most so-called ma-triculants.

The grade you achieved in school has got nothing to do with the way you drive. It’s either a profession that’s in your blood or not. Please don’t let one young Mozambican driver be the face off all truck-ers in South Africa.

EQUALLY BAD WITH TROLLEY AND CAR

GRADE 12 NOT A PREREQUISITE

Dear Editor,

I found myself very disappointed after reading Do something about road carnage in week 38’s issue.

Shock was not the response that most Durbanites felt. The response was heartache and empathy for every single person that lost their lives and the families who lost their loved ones, most being the only breadwinners in their families.

What saddened me most of all was that, in two weeks, the incident would be a thing of the past. That might be true for most Johannesburgers and the rest of the country, but it has really made an impact on the whole community of Durban. That evening on Facebook all I could see were status

DURBANITES WILL REMEMBER updates about the tragedy. Some even volunteered at the scene to help offi cials sort through the blood-soaked intersection. A lot of people felt the heartache - as they had just passed through the intersection earlier that day or even fi ve minutes before the accident - because it hit so close to home. Durban as a city is working together to ban trucks on Field’s Hill by marching peacefully at the sceneof the accident.

The empathy felt by everyone has helped putfund-raising trolleys in most Spars around the Dur-ban area where people can donate tinned food to the families that lost loved ones. A lot of people feel that the driver is not to blame and fund-raising has also been able to provide him with free counselling and much-needed legal representation. It is clear that he is completely sincere and heartbroken over the accident. Many feel that he deserves to

be punished for his actions and go to jail for the loss of 23 lives, but what people fail to realise is that knowing you have killed 23 people is a huge heartache to bear in itself and already feels like a prison sentence. No matter how people feel, he is still innocent until proven guilty and should not be judged.

Driving through the same intersection yesterday, it is clear that this tragedy will not be forgotten by Durbanites in just two weeks, as 22 white crosses have been placed in the ground on the hill right next to the robots. These crosses will always be a reminder of the tragedies that can happen while driving on our roads and the long struggle to ban trucks on Field’s hill.

Chelsea Crawford

Dear Editor,

I just don’t understand how people actually drive. Even in an unroadworthy vehicle, why speed

and exceed the speed limit? Why do people drive the way they do?

If the limit is 120km/h on a highway, do 110km/h (80km/h for trucks). Generally people don’t respect other road users. What I’m saying is that we drive like we own the road and pretend that there’s no one else on it.

Or to paint a different scenario: when you’re doing your shopping, pushing your trolley up and down the aisle and having to stand in the queue to pay, is anyone obliging to give you way? If people behave in shopping malls the way they do, it’s no wonder we have carnage on our roads.

their actual test.Beyond this, after completing the simulator ex-

perience, the driver is comprehensively debriefed by one of the skilled trainers.

It’s small, simple initiatives like this that will bet-ter help prepare the next generation of motorists. Sadly, however, only a small number of students benefi t from such an experience.

We also need a complete overhaul of the licens-ing examination and test in South Africa, because - besides many new drivers being ill prepared to drive every day - the high levels of corruption in the licensing department means someone with a few extra bucks can bribe their way to a licence and be the next menace on the road.

So where do we even begin? Now without sounding like a cliché, change starts with us. If you have a child that’s learning how to drive, make sure they go through the proper channels and are adequately prepared for their test. If an advanced driving course is an option, do it! These specialised courses will open your eyes to just how dangerous a vehicle can be in the wrong hands in the wrong conditions, especially when the roads are wet.

Furthermore, we need to change our behaviour towards one another. I recently returned from a long drive from Mpumalanga and our attitude towards each other is saddening. People hog the fast lane, pull out into the road without looking, have a total disregard for indicators and the rules of the road. And for what? To get home a few minutes earlier, they would rather put their own and others’ lives at risk?

I used to fi nd driving therapeutic and crave the open road to clear my mind. Now I’m incredibly fearful when I head out. I’m more cautious when crossing intersections and travelling in general, all because I don’t only have to focus on what I’m doing and my surroundings, but also have to be able to react immediately when some idiot decides to pu ll in front of me out of nowhere at snail’s pace.

Simulators allow children to get to grips with driving. Photo: Bridgestone

As motorists we often complain about the state of our roads, the ever-growing potholes, non-func-tioning traffi c lights and faded white lines.

But it seems road conditions are merely one area of fault and our focus should rather be on fellow drivers. A deep lack of common courtesy has arisen in recent years. Every week we get countless letters from our readers complaining about other motorists who have a complete lack of respect for one another, particularly when it comes to highway driving and four-way stops.

We all know about the Field’s Hill accident and tragic loss of life. We are also learning about the events before the accident, like how the driver didn’t have the necessary qualifi cation to operate such a large vehicle. What worries me is the example we are setting for the drivers of tomorrow; those scholars who still need to pass their licences and get thrown into the carnage that is South African roads.

The degradation of drivers is alarming and our licensing system is by no means adequate enough to prepare the youth for our roads. The learner’s test makes new drivers familiar with road signs and what to do when heading out onto the streets. But theory and practice are two very different things. That’s why Bridgestone, along with driving.co.za,

has introduced a driving-simulator experience with the aim of promoting road safety among young and future drivers, even if they’ve never driven before.

This initiative is run at selected schools and brings the simulator to the school for a day to provide learners the opportunity to learn how to operate a motor vehicle in a completely safe environment.

We all know how intimidating driving can be, particularly when you are still learning. That’s why a programme like this is so important. The road

and traffi c conditions can be manipulated to give learners a better understanding of the dangers involved with driving, from heavy traffi c to people skipping robots and even having trees fall into the road.

The drive lasts for about 15 minutes and once completed, the learner receives a printout of their drive, highlighting any errors they may have made. The simulator is marked to K53 standards, hence it will provide drivers with a better understanding of where they will need to improve before tackling
