Occupant protection has been the focus ofmuch private and public research anddevelopment for many years. The two vehiclecomponents which are incorporated into thevehicle solely for the protection of theoccupants in vehicle accidents are the safetybelts provided at each seating position and thesupplemental restraint system, or air bags,provided at the driver and front passengerseat positions. The safety belts can protect youand your passengers only if they are used. Theair bag is a supplemental protective devicethat is more effective and safer as arestraining device when the safety belts arebeing used.

Safety belts are helpful for several distinctreasons:

1) Safety belts attach the occupants to thevehicle so that they will not be ejectedduring an accident.

2) Safety belts attach the occupant to thevehicle so that they can use the spacebetween their pre-crash seating positionand the front of the vehicle to slow downto a stop more gradually, as their safetybelts stretch and the front end of thevehicle absorbs the energy of the crash bycrumpling.

3) Safety belts keep the driver in his seat, sothat the driver might have a chance toregain control in certain accident situations.

4) Safety belts keep occupants from beingcatapulted into and injuring the driver andother occupants.

Safety belts cannot work unless they are wornand worn properly.

Vehicle occupants are injured if the forcesapplied to the body’s structures are greaterthan the body can tolerate without being in-jured. If a person’s body is stopped abruptly,the forces applied to the body will be high,whereas if the body is slowed down graduallyover some distance, the forces will be muchlower. Thus, in order to protect an occupantfrom injury in a crash, the idea is to give theperson as much time and distance as possiblein coming to a stop.

Imagine a person running at 15 miles per hour(25 km/h) head first into a concrete wall.Imagine a second person running at 15 milesper hour into a wall covered by a 3-foot(90 cm) thick deformable cushion. In the firstinstance the person could be seriously injuredor even killed. In the second, the runner couldexpect to walk away uninjured. Why? In thefirst instance, the body hit the non-yieldingconcrete surface and stopped immediately. Allof the energy the sprinter built up was ab-sorbed by the structures of the body, not by

the non-yielding concrete surface. In thesecond example, the body had exactly thesame amount of energy that had to be ab-sorbed as in the first example, but it contin-ued to move into the padding, giving the bodyadditional time and distance to slow down toa complete stop as the padding absorbed thesprinter’s energy by deforming.

If a car crashes into a concrete wall at30 miles per hour (50 km/h), the frontbumper of the car stops immediately, but thepassenger compartment stops more graduallyas the front structure of the vehicle crumples.The belted occupant is held to the seat andgains the advantage of the cushion providedby the crumpling of the front of the vehicleand the stretching of the safety belt webbing.That belted occupant’s body slows down from50 km/h (30 mph) to zero over a distance of90-120 cm (3-4 feet). That belted occupantalso remains properly positioned so that, if theair bag deploys in a frontal collision, the oc-cupant might never strike any rigid structuresin the vehicle. The unbelted occupant receivesno such benefit. The unbelted person is notattached to the vehicle and so that personcontinues to travel at the vehicle’s pre-crash

speed of 30 miles per hour (50 km/h) untilstriking a hard object at approximately30 miles per hour (50 km/h) and stoppingabruptly. Even in a frontal collision in whichthe air bag deploys, the unbelted front seatoccupant remains at greater risk of seriousinjury or death than the properly restrainedfront seat occupant. The rear seat is equipped with two outboardseating positions and a centre seating posi-tion featuring three-point lap-and-shouldersafety belts.

To help reduce the risk of personal injury incollisions or sudden manoeuvres, your vehicleis equipped with three-point safety belts. Thetwo front seats, the rear seats and the thirdrow seats are each equipped with three-pointsafety belts. These safety belts are each an-chored in three locations to restrain passen-gers who are properly positioned and wear-ing the safety belt.

A three-point safety belt set in the ELR(Emergency Locking Retractor) mode requiresno length adjustment and allows the freedomof body movement when the vehicle movesat a constant speed.

However, in the event of a sudden or strongstop, or during heavy acceleration or decel-eration, the safety belt will lock automaticallyto restrain the body.

Always fasten your safety belts correctly:

1. Close and lock the doors.

2. Make sure seatback is upright.

3. Pick up the safety belt latch plate and useit to pull the belt across your body. Makesure the belt is not twisted. If the safetybelt locks as you are pulling it out, allow itto rewind into the retractor. Pull the safetybelt out again to a comfortable and securelength.

4. Position the shoulder belt midway over theshoulder and across the chest. Never placethe shoulder belt across the neck. Thisassures that in the case of a collision, thebelt applies force to the shoulder bones andkeeps the impact away from ribs or neck,helping to avoid serious internal injuries.
