Audiovisual Programs Related to Preservation: A

Mediagraphy

by Joseph W. Palmer

The growing interest in sharing information about the preservation of library and archival material has resulted in the production of numerous audiovisual programs on the subject over the past

15 years. Each year more items appear. In the 1980s a number of sources were estab

lished to insure inexpensive and wide distribution for preservation audiovisual programs. The Library of Congress's Preservation Office built up an extensive collection and made programs available on free loan to institutions and organizations across the country. Smaller collections were established by the Illinois Cooperative Conservation Project and Solinet. These collections were established primarily to meet regional needs but both also lent to organizations outside their regions. In the case of Illinois, loans were made at no charge. Solinet levied a $20 borrower's fee to cover expenses.

In the 1990s the situation is much changed. Due to staff and budget constraints, the Library of Congress's Preservation Office stopped lending audiovisuals several years ago. The Illinois Cooperative Conservation Project, now incorporated into the State Library, has also eliminated its lending program. Only Solinet remains. (Titles available from Solinet are identified in this list. You may request a current list from Southeastern Library Network, 400 Colony Square, Atlanta, GA 30361-6301; 404-892-0943 or 800-999-8558; FAX: 404-892-7879.

Numerous programs from other sources (including some in the following list) have gone out of print. For instance, the Smithsonian Institution, which had eight preservation audiovisuals

available for sale or loan in the 1980s, has ceased to sell and lend these programs due to cutbacks. It seems safe to predict that many programs currently available from other sources will become unavailable in the next few years. I believe there is a need to establish a comprehensive collection of preservation audiovisuals housed in a facility that can be relied upon to maintain these programs and make them available at minimal cost for many years. Current trends suggest that when the loan of audiovisual programs is an added burden on an organization whose primary responsibilities lie elsewhere, the loan program is likely to be among the first casualties when there are staff and budget cutbacks. For this reason I would suggest that such a collection be established at a university that is a member of the Consortium of University Film Centers and has a long history of maintaining and lending audiovisual programs. In such a situation housing, maintaining, and lending audiovisual programs would not be an added burden but the basic function of the lending unit. This should insure that programs remain well cared for and available for many years.

The following is a list of some of the more significant items currently available for sale, rental, or loan. Some important items that are out of print and not known to be available for rent or loan (e.g., titles from the Smithsonian Institution) are included because of their significance. Some of these may be obtainable by interlibrary loan.

Each entry identifies at least one source in which the item was found listed. This list is not comprehensive, especially for older items. Additional items may be found in Timothy L. Ericson

Joseph W. Palmer is Associate Professor in the School of Information and Library Studies, State University of New York at Buffalo.

and Linda J. Ebben's "Audiovisuals for Archivists" which appeared in the Society of American Archivist's SAA Newsletter (September 1985). The best way to learn about newly released audiovisual programs is to scan announcements in both The Abbey Newsletter and CAN (Conservation Administration News).

Most of the items listed have not been viewed by the compiler. Often the annotations have been drawn from OCLC annotations, catalog descriptions, and sources such as the Ericson/Ebben list and the Solinet AV loan catalog.

Some programs from Great Britain and Australia may or may not be obtainable from the distributor in the NTSC format used by North American television. If not, they cannot be played on U.S. video equipment.

Titles are arranged in eight categories:
