ANTE PORTAS

Strindberg’s: Coram Populo Madame Rachilde’s: The Crystal Spider Valery Briusov’s: The Wayfarer

Produced by Persona Theatre Company Performed at Dipylon Theatre, Athens (February-April 2005)

This production, which brought together three symbolist plays by August Strindberg, Madame Rachilde and Valery Briusov, as adapted by Avra Sidiropoulou, was staged at Dipylon Theatre in March-April 2005, sponsored by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.

Written at the beginnings of the 20th century and relatively unknown, all three plays share a clearly metaphysical problematic. In performance, within August Strindberg’s Coram Populo intervene excerpts from Madame Rachilde’s The Crystal Spider and Russian Symbolist poet Valery Briusov’s The Wayfarer, in a constant interplay between the real and the imagined, the factual and the spectral. In these texts, what defines the protagonists’ lives is an element of transcendence, something that the characters grasp experientially, but ultimately fail to see.
