We look back on a most memorable year in 2017/2018, the key highlight being the official opening of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) on 19 May 2017, graced by the presence of our Patron, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The much-anticipated opening was held with great fanfare. This new 11-storey building located in the heart of the Shenton Way financial district provides state-of-the-art facilities for the local performing arts and cultural community. More importantly, it epitomises the sustained efforts to make our distinct Chinese cultural heritage accessible and appealing to members of the public from all age groups, and to celebrate the best talents in local Chinese arts and culture.

In conjunction with the opening, we launched our inaugural Cultural Extravaganza on 20 May 2017. Spanning over 8 days, the cultural showcase featured a series of workshops, talks, performances and programmes presented by local artistes, performers and practitioners from the arts and cultural sector. The spectacular opening show Voyage, was a multi-media musical and visual journey presented by award-winning filmmaker Royston Tan, transporting audiences to different dreamscapes through the skilful use of 3D projection mapping with holographic imagery.

Another key highlight of the Cultural Extravaganza was the specially commissioned omnibus film 667 produced by Royston Tan. This impressive anthology of short films portrayed the works of five local young film directors exploring their cultural roots. The Cultural Extravaganza ended on a high note with our inaugural Sing•浪 concert which attracted over 3,000 people. Co-curated by Chingay Parade artistic director Fan Dong Kai and renowned music director Goh Kheng Long, Sing•浪 concert featured xinyao icons and current pop artistes who performed renditions of favourite xinyao ballads and other popular well-loved songs from the 1980s to the present day.

Of equal significance was the inaugural Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award to honour local individuals and organisations for making exemplary contributions to the Singapore Chinese culture. On 20 May 2017, Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, presented the awards to crosstalk veteran Han Lao Da for the individual category, and to Siong Leng Musical Association for the organisation category.

In addition, the SCCC continued to uphold Chinese tradition by celebrating major Chinese festivals in the year under review. We organised the Dragon Boat Carnival for the

Duanwu Festival, Mid-Autumn under the Stars for the Mid-Autumn Festival; and held the Spring Reception, as well as our first Lunar New Year Carnival & Concert to usher in the Year of the Dog. These festive events were well-attended by invited guests and members of the community who enjoyed the performances and special activities.

Throughout the year, the SCCC initiated several new events. Foremost was the “Creativity in Pulses” Special Exhibition, also held in conjunction with our official opening. The refreshingly new exhibition showcased 21 artworks by 19 contemporary local artists; it offered creative interpretations of appreciating and understanding the Singapore Chinese culture from the perspectives of filmmakers, product designers, graphic artists, photographers and installation artists.

To create new platforms for the arts, we also started a new series named “TGIF Music Station” to enliven the Central Business District on every alternate Friday, starting from January 2018. We invited popular local singers to perform xinyao tunes, pop classics and well-known theme songs from local TV drama serials, enabling the audience to enjoy various genres of Chinese music.

In April 2018, we welcomed Low Sze Wee into the SCCC family as the new CEO, who will lead the team in developing programmes and initiatives to further SCCC’s mission of nurturing a vibrant Singapore Chinese culture, rooted in a cohesive, multi-racial society.

As we continue to strive to fulfil our vision and mission in meaningful ways, I would like to extend my appreciation to all who have made our work possible. My sincere thanks go to SCCC board of directors, members of board committees, management and staff for their dedication and hard work, and all relevant government departments and statutory boards, as well as clan organisations, foundations, institutions and individuals for their constant support.

Moving forward, the SCCC is committed to step up our collaborations with schools, arts and cultural groups, community, organisations and individuals to present high quality programmes for everyone.

Since joining the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), I have been often asked, ‘What are my hopes for SCCC?’

My answer is quite simple. I see SCCC as a means to an end, and not the end itself.

SCCC is a means for us to know ourselves and our society. As our society responds to internal and external forces, our way of life will also evolve and transform over time. This way of life, also known as culture, is expressed in the things we do, say and create. Hence, if we hope to better understand who we are, and what Singapore is like as a society, then we need to go beyond the usual hard facts and figures. Important national events and personalities, or statistics about our population and economy can only provide part of the picture. If we want a more nuanced understanding of the richness and complexity of Singapore and Singaporean identity, then we should refer to other sources by using all our five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

If we wish to get a sense of what makes us Singaporean, there are fewer better ways than to read a local poem, listen to a local song, watch a local film, eat a local dish or touch a piece of local sculpture. The best of such artistic expressions capture the ideas, values and feelings of their creators vividly. Artists often see themselves and the world in ways that are unexpected, and yet revealing at the same time. Through them, we get to view and think about the world and ourselves in a different light. This is one key reason why artistic creativity should be valued. And this is why SCCC aims to be a platform for local artists and groups to present their best works to the public. We would like to spend the coming years to know our artists and arts groups better, and see how we can support them and make them feel welcomed in our centre.

This then begs the next question. How do we ensure that such important creative expressions can continue to be produced for the long term? How do we make art-making sustainable in Singapore? How do we encourage our local dancers, writers, painters, musicians and many others to continue to create? The truth is that artists need an appreciative audience who can provide both financial and moral support. In that regard, the young are a critical part of the arts and cultural eco-system. They represent the future generation of arts supporters and consumers. SCCC would like to play a part to nurture the growth of this key audience group. Therefore, SCCC needs to better understand the needs and motivations of this group. One key strategy is to use popular culture as an entry point to provoke the curiosity and stimulate the interest of our young people to think more deeply about their identity and the world they live in. If we are successful in this, our arts and cultural scene would have a bright future.

In the coming years, I look forward to working closely with my colleagues and all stakeholders to help achieve a vital and dynamic eco-system where artists, audiences and facilitators such as SCCC, can support and cherish one another.

SCCC made its indelible mark in the heart of Singapore’s bustling financial district on 19 May 2017, with a grand opening ceremony officiated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong alongside 500 guests from the local arts and cultural sector, Chinese clans, educational institutions, donors and representatives from the other ethnic communities. Serving as a landmark for the community to appreciate the diversity and vibrancy of Singapore’s Chinese culture, it plays an integral role in fostering our unique multi-cultural heritage and providing a dedicated place to celebrate the best talents in local Chinese arts and culture.

Opening festivities included a lively lion dance performance by Nanyang Girls’ High School students, performances by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts & Cultural Troupe, and a xinyao ensemble led by Liang Wern Fook. On his tour of the building, PM Lee also previewed the SCCC’s first special exhibition, Creativity in Pulses.

The 11-storey building which cost $110 million to build, received $29 million in donations from various sectors of society. It was a testament to the strong support of the community. The building’s modern architecture also incorporates traditional Chinese design elements and adopts a three-

tier division – with a two-storey “urban living room” as the base that connects

to the city, a podium body from the third to sixth storey which

accommodates facilities for a variety of activities and the car park, and a glass-box crown where cultural performances and activities can be staged.

SCCC red Packets & greeting Cards – a tribute to pioneering generation artists

SCCC’s festive collaterals for Lunar New Year 2018 came in the form of a greeting card and two sets of red packets based on the artworks of three local pioneering generation artists Chen Chong Swee, Lim Hak Tai and Georgette Chen. In partnership with National Gallery Singapore, the paintings featured on the red packets were Chen Chong Swee’s Orchids Composition and Lim Hak Tai’s Peony, while Georgette Chen’s Purple Orchids was reproduced for the greeting card. This was a refreshing way to make art more accessible to the public as we recognise the contributions of pioneers to the local art scene.

By taking part in quizzes on SCCC’s social media channels, members of the public were given a chance to win sets of red packets.
