TRANSCRIPT
• Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) guidelines animals used for experimentation are maintained in the Animal House Division.
• The Animal House holding facility to service the requirements of small animal-based research
• Before undertaking experimental Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC)
• Infrastructure: Equipments
• Laminar Flow Hood, Autoclave, Incubator, Air Shower.
• Individually Ventilated Cage (IVC) units & double-door autoclave.
• Animal House Facilities • Available to boost the teaching, training and
research facilities• Qualified veterinarians and technical
personnel help carry out research & keep it in accordance with the standards established by CPCSEA
• Animal care • maintained individual rooms disease
transmission & inter-species conflicts. • controlled environmental conditions (T=22-
26°C), • 12 hr alternate light and dark cycle • 100 % fresh air exchange• uninterrupted power & water supply
• The support staffs ensures that every part of animal care including– feeding, – watering, – restraining, – cage cleaning, – record keeping and – ordering of animals, – feeds, – bedding materials and – equipment from outside sources are monitored.
• The animals themselves are isolated from – human habitation and – guarded from dust, – smoke, – noise, – wild rodents, – insects and – birds-in fact anything that would disturb their
habitat.
• Veterinary care • Periodic health monitoring. • animals content and healthy. • daily observation and monitors any
behavioural changes or signs of illness.
• EMERGENCY, WEEKEND AND HOLIDAY CARE• emergency, institutional security personnel
and fire or police people responsible for the animals.
• a disaster plan (personnel and animals) prepared as part of the overall safety plan for the animal facility.
• TRANSPORT OF LABORATORY ANIMALS• the mode of transport, • the containers, • the animal density in cages, • food and water during transit, • protection from transit infections, injuries and
stress.
• ANAESTHESIA & EUTHANASIA• control pain or distress under experiment affect
cardiovascular, respiratory and thermo-regulatory mechanism in addition to central nervous system.
• prepared for anaesthesia by overnight fasting and using pre-anaesthetics block parasympathetic stimulation of cardio-pulmonary system and reduce salivary secretion.
• Local anaesthetics are used to block the nerve supply to a limited area and are used only for minor and rapid procedures.
• A number of general anaesthetic agents are used in the form of inhalants.
• Euthanasia• Euthanasia is resorted to events where an animal is required to be
sacrificed on termination of an experiment or otherwise for ethical reasons.
• The method should in all cases meet the following requirements:a) Death, without causing anxiety, pain or distress with minimum time
lag phase.b) Minimum physiological and psychological disturbances.c) Compatibility with the purpose of study and minimum emotional
effect on the operator.d) Location should be separate from animal rooms and free from
environmental contaminants.
• LABORATORY ANIMAL ETHICS• All scientists working with laboratory animals
must have a deep ethical consideration• considerations are taken care at the individual
level, at institutional level and finally at the national level.
