Park Junior School presents:

‘Go and explore, what’s out your front door’ week

For the final week of this term and in aid of mental

health week and BBC bird watch, we have provided

you with a selection of activities for you to complete

as a family. You may complete the activities in any

order you would like and whichever way is most

suitable for your family situation. All the activities in

the booklet are accessible for all age groups and are

based on the National Curriculum for KS2.

We hope you enjoy your final week of this term by

taking part in as many activities as you can. If you

are able to post a photo of you on Microsoft Teams

taking part in the activities, that would be fantastic!

Enjoy,

2.) A Bluetit

3.) A Sparrow

Once you have finished

your masterpieces please upload to your class’s Teams account.

If you need some inspiration watch the clip from the Wetlands

Centre which has been uploaded in Microsoft Teams.

Activity 3:

Science lesson- Sorting and classifying

Curriculum links (Year 3-6):

Working scientifically skill - Sort vertebrate and invertebrate animals into

groups, describing their key features. Use a classification key to identify which

group of vertebrate animals belong to and then create your own.

For more information watch:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks1-ks2-raising-baby-

bird/zrcb47h

What did you learn about raising baby birds?

The working scientifically skill we are focusing on is “sorting and classifying”.

That means we are looking at 2 different groups of creatures. Invertebrates and

Vertebrates!

Vertebrates = animals/creatures with a backbone.

Invertebrates = animals/creatures without a backbone.

Here is a video that explains it a little more…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zn22pv4/articles/zp6g7p3

Birds are definitely …………………

Help to classify these creatures into invertebrate or invertebrates. (The animal

picture sheet). Cut the pictures out and sort them in to the right part of the

table.

Invertebrate Vertebrate

Part 2 Science: Sort and Classifying

Now we are going to sort animals in to 1 of 3 categories.

Herbivores – only eat plants

Omnivores – eat plants and other animals

Carnivores – only eat other animals

What do you think birds eat? What category would they fall in to?

Cut out or draw the above pictures and place them in the correct place on the

Venn diagram (Where does the Blue tit go? What about an Eagle?)

\ Activity 4: Build a bird’s nest

Orienteering

Use your geographical knowledge to locate the

mathematical questions at each clue station. Write

your answer (which will be a number) in the correct

station below. Use the scrabble board to change

numbers into letters (eg. 1 = A, 2 = B etc.) and find

the hidden message. Good luck!
