PATRON’S MESSAGEThe 2020/2021 season has seen a third year of our members not having access to our clubhouse. However, I am comforted by the enthusiasm displayed by the membership to get on with our services to our community in patrolling the beach. We have continued to undertake training and education as well as providing resources to our athletes for competition. Each and every member can be proud of what has been achieved under these most trying circumstances. It is pleasing to see that the final stages of the work required to meet building standards is close to finalisation and that we should be able to have our Annual General Meeting in the renovated clubhouse along with other planned activities. My congratulations are extended to all officials and competitors who attended the various Association championships and I note particularly the excellent achievements of all at the Australian Championships in Queensland. To be in the top 15 clubs given the difficulties we have faced augers well for our future endeavours.Of note is the Clubs participation in the “Silver Salties” programme, which undertakes a “walk and talk” exercise and a “catching waves” opportunity. This is a wonderful community service by our club and I was delighted to attend the inaugural event along with President Chris Giles. My personal thanks go to all who have assisted in delivering the programme to our community. In his first year as our President, Chris Giles, has had to deal with many challenges which he has handled with dedication and efficiency. His regular communication through the “Cronulla Capers” has kept us fully informed on the clubhouse project and other important matters. In conjunction with his Executive and Management Committee the club has remained on an even keel as we prepare to finally receive our occupancy certificate and move back into our renovated facility.

The pages of this report reflect the Clubs prestigious major awards and winners as well as those who have achieved at higher levels of our Association. My congratulations go to each and every one of you and I thank you for your contribution and endeavours to and for our club. Our Honorary Secretary, Emma Larssen’s 114th Annual Report detailing all of our activities and achievements is commended to you for thorough reading. Let us hope that in the not too distant future, we will have had our club house opened and operational so that we can again enjoy the facilities of our club house and the camaraderie of each others company.Ken English - Patron

PRESIDENT’S REPORTI think you would all agree with me that this has been a season like no other for all of our members and for surf life savers right across the country. COVID-19 disrupted the end of last season and threatened the return to the beach for this one. Added to this, the deteriorating beach conditions at Cronulla ,meant getting the season started was proving extremely challenging. But with perseverance and dedication coupled with easing restrictions, we did just that.Advice from the NSW government regarding what was and wasn’t possible continued to evolve as September rolled around with restrictions on total beach numbers and participant numbers causing the most challenges. What this did mean, was that we needed to cap our numbers for all club activities which made the start to the season for patrols, nippers, surf sports and Sunday activities really different. In managing these challenges I must commend the cooperative approach taken by all club’s along the Bate Bay as well as the Sutherland Shire Council in coming up with solutions that would ensure we were able to deliver all of our services and activities whilst maintaining compliance with COVID safe principles and to cope with our available beach space. Our split session and split location (beach and bay) solution for nipper activities was a particularly successful approach and may well be a permanent fixture moving forward. The added complexity this season, was the continued absence from our ‘home’. When we first vacated the building, nobody could have imagined that we would have to operate for 3 seasons out of temporary facilities. However delays in the completion of the project, followed by our most recent compliance challenges have meant that delays have continued. This has been extremely frustrating and a painstaking process, as we faced the bureaucracy of adding capacity to public infrastructure supporting our building. Our ability to get

a clear answer from our Sydney Water contacts about timing and next steps has been extremely difficult which has made providing up to date and reliable information to our members hard. At the time of writing, works to lay the pipe have now been completed and we await the commissioning of the works and final certification of the building. I look forward to welcoming you all into the building in the lead up to this season – you will all be blown away by the amazing new facilities we have to work from. At this point, I would like to commend the continuous dedication of the building committee who have overseen this project. The works have been complex with constant changes and emerging challenging issues, however this group has continued to focus on getting the job done and ensuring that the best interests of the club are front and centre. These members all volunteer their time and I’d like to thank

Chris Giles - President Cronulla SLSC

them for their tireless work. I’d also like to commend all members for their perseverance and no nonsense approach to continued service – we’re nearly there.Despite our various challenges, we were able to witness some outstanding achievements and celebrate some fabulous events. Season 2020/21 marked the 40th anniversary of Women being formally allowed to complete their Bronze medallions and become full patrolling members of Surf Clubs around the country. In celebration of this milestone, Cronulla SLSC hosted a gala dinner on International Women’s Day where we had the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution that women have made (and continue to make) to our club. On the night, I had the privilege of interviewing a panel of female members who continue to make our club great as well as 3 of our younger female members who have a whole lifetime of involvement in front of them. Their stories of focus and perseverance are an inspiring motivator for young men and young women. I look forward to celebrating this event on an annual basis for many years to come.On this night, we also had the pleasure of formally launching the club’s first formal women’s and youth mentoring programs. My experience as a young member of our club was one where we looked after and supported our younger members – encouraging them to get involved, aspire for great things and support as they put up their hands to contribute. I think over the years we have lost that focus and as a result we see fewer young people and fewer women in positions of leadership. The club’s mentoring program will attempt to arrest this decline, with a formal mentoring approach that connects members with wisdom and expertise with those that aspire to be great leaders. I look forward to welcoming our first group of mentors and mentees this year and seeing the positive outcomes that this program delivers. These are just some of the club’s key achievements this year. A year that also included the successful running of

a COVID safe Shark Island Swim, the adoption and initial execution of a new whole club surf sports strategy and the eventual return to surf sports competition including the running of the Australian Championships which had been cancelled the year before due to COVID. Our results provide a glimmer of what is to come, with some fabulous results on the sand and in the ocean. By far and away though, the most important achievement and milestone is that we once again achieved the most treasured result – no lives lost on Cronulla Beach, our true measure of success. When I took on the job of President last year, little did I know how constant and intense the role would be. That said, it is one of the greatest honours. Cronulla SLSC has had a big role to play in my life and in my career. To lead the club throughout this year, albeit through very challenging circumstances and to set it up for the next stage of its evolution has been a thrill. But leading a surf club is not an individual event. It takes a whole team to run a surf club, and we are truly fortunate to have so many who are so dedicated. To the management committee, all sub-committees and our office staff, thank you for your keen focus and commitment. In particular, I’d like to thank the Executive – Daniel Wood, Suzanne Storrie, Chris Barber and Emma Larssen. This has not been an easy year, however your collegial approach to the challenges we faced has made facing them as a team more manageable. And finally to my family – to Sonia and the kids. You give me the freedom to do what I love and support me every step of the way. Thank you all.I look forward to embracing everything that next season puts in front of us, including welcoming all of you into our new home – it’s going to be great.See you on the beach.Chris Giles - President Cronulla SLSC

SECRETARY’S REPORTIt is once again a pleasure to be able to submit this, the 114th Annual Report for the 2020-2021 Season. Indeed another year “like no other”! We continued to see Covid-19 test us and for a while we were out in front, able to enjoy our beautiful Cronulla Beach for the majority of the summer season. The 113th AGM was a first for combined in person and virtual attendance, but as Cronulla members we adapted to the challenge. Daniel Wood was bestowed the honour of Life Membership for his sustained and conspicuous service. Daniel joined Cronulla SLSC in 1996 and has gained several awards since as well as held numerous roles across the Executive, Management and various Sub-Committees, totalling nineteen years on Management. I congratulate Daniel on this well deserved honour as he continues to serve as our Deputy President and, more importantly, weekly IRB water safety. Our Volunteer Patrolling Lifesavers ensured that our famous Club again had the distinction of declaring ‘No Lives Lost’ through their ‘Vigilance and Service’ and I commend the Lifesaving Committee for another job well done. Once again adapting to changes to patrol rescue protocols, PPE requirements, Covid safety plans and QR codes, our patrolling members continued to devote their time unselfishly – thank you.A major milestone that occurred this season was the celebration of 40 Years of Women in Surf Life Saving. SLSA permitted women to qualify for the Bronze Medallion from the1st July 1980, however it was not until the Club’s 1981 AGM that a resolution was passed to grant full membership to any female who made application.Cronulla SLSC indeed has a rich history of outstanding women and we had an opportunity to celebrate some of their achievements on International Women’s Day on 8th March 2020 when we held a dinner at Cronulla RSL. Of note we had four panellists that included our first female Bronze Medallion awardee - Michele Goode (nee Halpin). Michele recounted that it was a number of years before there was acceptance from the association and most women held roles on the Ladies Auxiliary. Michele obtained her Bronze Medallion in December1981 and spent her first season on patrol breastfeeding her third child! Women’s acceptance into the club came with mixed reactions but gradually they have continued to forge their path, whilst even now still encountering resistance. On this night we also launched a Youth and Women’s Mentoring Program that will kick-off in the early weeks of the 2021/22 season. Mentors and mentees will take part in a series of workshops and functions set for the coming season with the plan to repeat this program each year and work on encouraging younger members and female members into roles within the Club - on committees, as Patrol Captains, and in other areas of leadership. One past female member I would like to acknowledge is Eloise Miller (nee Graf) who was elevated to the SLSA

Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements in Surf Sports this season. Elly came through as a Cronulla Nipper and made her mark on the sand in the open ranks winning thirteen Australian Championship Gold Medals in sprint and flags between 2006 and 2015, many of these with Cronulla SLSC. Congratulations Elly on this incredible recognition. For the second season in a row, our nominee for Patrol Captain of the Year, came out on top with Annalyse Crane taking out the title at the Sydney Branch Awards of Excellence. The title of Junior Age Manager of the Year was won by Ben Schneider for his efforts in the JAG. This is great acknowledgment of both Anna and Ben for a season that has definitely presented its challenges. Well done! Our members have not only contributed to our surf club but have also made us proud off the beach. If a pandemic and bushfires of last season was not enough, this season saw NSW hit by some of the worst floods of recent times. Club member Luis Catalan, who is also a volunteer with the S.E.S. was tasked to impacted sites and assisted in rescues during this time. Thank you for your continued support to the Club and the community Luis. I would also like to recognise our 25yr Long Service member Dr. Brandi Cole (nee Elliott) who was a support doctor with the Australia Women’s Football team, the Matildas, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan. It is great to see our members involved and using their expertise in other arenas. This season Cronulla SLSC were represented at the 2021 Sydney Branch 15-17yrs Young Leaders Program by Noah Duchet-Catherine, Natalie Freney and Benjamin Huntley. It is great to see our youth members participating in these programs and learning valuable skills in leadership. Congratulations on your selection, we hope to one day see you take up roles in the Club.On the competition front it was exciting to see our athletes back and most carnivals taking place. Strong teams represented us across all ages at Branch, State and Aussies and results can be found elsewhere in this

The Inaugural Envirobank NSW Super Team Series was held as a new event and saw Head Nipper Coach Jay Furniss selected as a team captain, along with athletes Nathan Breen, Tim Ford, Cody Gaddes, Sasha Popovic and Isabellah Walker. Well done on your selection and representing your teams and club.Once again our affiliation continued with SLSS, SLSNSW, SLSA, and the Cronulla-Sutherland District Council. The collaboration between the Bate Bay clubs is strong and along with Sutherland Shire Council Lifeguard services, it is encouraging to see the cooperation from all members in working to create a safer coastal environment for the community. Most lifesaving, coaching, competition and ‘club specific’ highlights are well covered in this report and I do recommend the reading of it in its entirety. There were some outstanding performances at all levels this season and some great events and initiatives such as our Silver Salties. Our members should be proud; our competitors that wore the sky blue, black and white are to be congratulated; and our lifesavers in the red and yellow are to be thanked. As always, this season as Honorary Secretary has been made all the more enjoyable thanks to one person in particular - Jenny Pinker. Words cannot convey the gracious assistance you provide from ‘The Office’, particularly during a time of continued change and impact when you transitioned again to a working from home environment. You have always taken work home with you but Covid made it full time and I don’t think that has been fully recognised. Thank you, I truly appreciate what you do for work but also the many hours you do for the Club and its members. Likewise my thanks go to Robyn Cole and Kathy Ford, who also adapted to the working from home challenges and continued to support the running of the Club. With Kathy moving

on, I would like to welcome Sandra Marshall and Kaila Bergen to the team and I look forward to seeing them in the new clubhouse office soon. The Management Committee saw a mix of continued Zoom meetings as well as face-to-face, when we had enough ‘donut days’ and where ‘metre square’ rules allowed. Once again we adapted to the circumstances and continued to discuss and deliberate on various topics and issues raised. I would like to thank the Registrar who is standing down after his four years of service spent compiling and maintaining the records of each member’s history. Thank you to the members of the Executive and Management as well as Convenors and Sub-committee members, for the dedication and time put into their roles particularly during such a tumultuous year that again saw us without a clubhouse. I am certain I am not the only one when I say I cannot wait to get into our new home on the beach and look forward to the coming season. Although it has been a difficult time with Covid and again no clubhouse, I think it is important that we put the events and circumstances of the past year into perspective. We are lucky to live in such a wonderful part of the world and belong to such a special community that is the surf club. Many of you have leant on each other during various stages of lockdown, spent more time at the beach, walking the Esplanade, swimming around Shark Island and supporting each other. I hope you have all kept safe and continue to do so now and in the future. Emma Larssen - Hon. Secretary

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT Another turbulent season due to COVID, which affected competition mainly but also still being without a clubhouse. Several carnivals were cancelled, however, the Australian Championships and also the State Championships continued across 4 weekends. We were challenged again with not occupying our new clubhouse due to inadequacies with the fire irrigation system main. The resilience of members over this time is truly commendable. Due to a compressed carnival timetable, we again couldn’t hold Club Championships and due to beach erosion the Interclub was hosted at Wanda. This season our lifesaving section was again hugely successful with strong, well-attended and experienced patrols. Thanks to every patrolling member and the Life Saving Committee including our Patrol Captains, Vice Captains, IRB Drivers/Crew, IRB Captain Robert ‘Max’ Walker, IRB Vice-Captain Graham Burt, Gear Steward Rob Short, Radio Officer Rodney Dunn, First Aid Coordinator David Dalla-Camina, and our Chief Instructor Brian Dalgarno with the support of his trainers. Thank you all for your commitment, diligence and expertise. Congratulations to our 39 patrol members who gained 100% attendance including 6 outstanding patrol attendance award members. Winning Patrol was No. 8 led by outgoing Patrol Captain David Brukmann, who has led this patrol for seven years. As part of our lifesaving succession planning, 4 Patrol Captains will be standing down this season and we will be on boarding 4 new Patrol Captains. Thank you to Greg Cooper being replaced by Richie Hedley, also to Dave Brukmann replaced by Chris Hodge, to Carlo Villanti replaced by Rodd Sanchez and to Stuart Spencer replaced by Jared McLachlan. Vice-Captain Darryl Easton will stand down after doing an exceptional job. Darryl made a real difference and focused on ensuring a robust patrol structure.I’d like to mention our full support of the International Women’s Day celebrations and to also recognise our two female Patrol Captains Anna Crane and Annette Tasker. As a club and a Life Saving Committee, the club committed to deliver to our 100% patrol members the annual snow trip. With up to 80 eligible members from the 2019/20 and this season, that’s a huge task and expense, which is our thanks to our member’s commitment.Cronulla patrol members undertook several other voluntary commitments including water safety, officiating, IRB and an additional patrol at Garie. We even put an IRB crew forward to support the flood recovery efforts. Without our member efforts we couldn’t compete and you’re an essential part of our club. We have so many exceptional members within our club that contribute in so many different ways.

I’d like to recognise the efforts of Tim and Nathan Ford who most weeks when available supported the Blue Fins in water safety and how much safer could you get.An interesting fact also is that a group of ocean swimmers that joined our club some 15 years ago now make up approximately 1/12th of our patrolling numbers. These ocean swimmers joined to learn about surf lifesaving and put something back into the club. They are now very prominent in the patrolling area and other areas of the club significantly contributing to make our patrols what they are today.Working to identify the major award winners is always exhilarating and it is always such a difficult task as not everyone can be winners. Some great people are recognised including runners up. The Patrol Person of the Year was jointly won by Kyle McLachlan and Steve Massone scoring an equivalent high score. Other Patrol Person nominees were - Tania Cooper, Tristan Howison, Greg Oldfield, Kelly Mountier, Brian Dalgarno, and Cathy Rubbi. Most Inspirational Member was awarded to Jack Robertson. Jack began in the club as a nipper, is a fierce competitor, motivates the competition section and took out gold in the 2 x 1km Beach run with Nathan Breen. Most Improved Member is probably one of the toughest awards to present. This years Most Improved Member was Anna Crane for so many reasons being a patrol leader, recipient of the Branch Patrol Captains award, an active master’s competitor and the list is endless.Enhancing the Reputation and Standing of the Club was awarded to Jay Furniss. Jay joined CSLSC this season, coaching our nippers and supporting the opens training along with motivating our competitors individually and in teams.Congratulations to every award recipient including patrol training course awardees, our Club Member of the Year (attitude towards patrols, competition and club) and other divisional award recipients.

Chris Barber - Club Captain

Masters Captain Barry Gove did a stellar job this season building even further on the size and spirit of the Masters group. The Masters section is an integral section of the club and we grew immensely in the women’s competition area this season and I predict even bigger things next season. Thank you Barry for your passion in managing the masters section and taking it to the next level. The specially organised Masters Awards night was great fun.Our Australian Championships results, on the beach in particular, were exceptional and so pretty to watch. The telecast was great with the commentator’s raving about Cronulla pulling out its Ace of Spades. Well done to all the beachies and also the wateries, including our surfing medal to Finn Browning. Following this success we entered a number of individual and team award nominations into the SLSS Branch awards winning the Patrol Captain of the Year – Anna Crane and the Junior Age Manager of the Year – Ben Schneider. All nominees and winners were recognised and next year our aim to submit even more nominations. This season we also submitted nominations in the Surf Sports Teams, Club of the Year, Surf Sports Official, Community Award (Silver Salties), Masters Athlete, and Youth Athlete of the Year. The Coaching and Competition section was exceptionally managed by Ryan Hartup and the motivated committee. With a refreshed Surf Sports Plan, our coaching structure again was very strong with thanks to super coaches Mark Redrup, Ryan Hartup, Guy Telfer, Stuart Braine, Michael Roye, Paul Littlejohn, Scott Allen and Pat Bourke. Special mention to Mark Redrup who coaches the beachies, all those competitors look up to Mark as

an inspiration. (PS Georgie – we aren’t giving him up either). Mark Redrup also was a clear choice to receive the award for his Efforts in the Instruction and or Training of our club members. Our surf boat section this year commenced their 5 year plan to grow the section, thanks to a strategic plan developed by Pat Bourke. Pat is an amazing person and trainer which I can personally attest too. His qualities as a person and the way he instructs is extraordinary. A major contributor to giving us our weekly summer boost and maintaining member morale was our Sunday Surf Race. Thanks to Darryl and Wendy Ward. Thank you to our (Sunday) bar staff Brian Dalgarno, BBQ cook Bryan Wild, COVID Marshall Jake Cavanagh and our sponsors. To our nippers and the future of our club, well done. The new Nipper executive was exemplary, led by Matt Aitken. The inclusion of Jay Furniss into the nipper coaching injected much enthusiasm leading to improved results. The competitive spirit was built on with the involvement of past nipper parents and grandparents. Great initiative and involvement of the Under 14 kids in water safety and other roles. At the commencement of the season, a graduate student studying a Bachelor of Counselling approached us to undertake an assessment of what our patrolling members thought about the club and why they were members. Here’s what our members said which is very enlightening:- What is something you enjoy about being a lifesaver?

Helping people and giving back, being at the beach, living a healthy lifestyle, camaraderie and friendship.

- What keeps you committed to being a lifesaver? People, team, relationships, family connection, the beach and its environment, helping the community and personal development, positive people.

- What qualities are the most important to you as a lifesaver? Good communication skills, physical abilities and strengths, Love for people and a willingness to help.

In summary, Graduates comments were – “Your club is welcoming, inclusive, vibrant, fun, caring and connected. It is the reflection of what a balanced healthy lifestyle promotes and adds positively to your well-being”.What a refreshing survey and result. There are some amazing people that work and volunteer in our club, they all pitch in and make things work, which is what clubs are all about. To our office ladies who provide so much support, a big thank you. To my fellow Executive team members Chris Giles, Emma Larssen, Daniel Wood and Suzanne Storrie, my gratitude also, as being on the executive is a tough, hard work and at times can be a thankless job. Lastly and most importantly, thank you to our partners because without their commitment we couldn’t do these roles.Chris Barber - Club Captain

VICE CAPTAIN’S REPORT Fellow Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club members,This is the report for my sixth and final season as Vice-Captain, so will contain some reflection on the last six seasons, and my forward view of the club. Obviously, being the Vice Captain for half of my term without a club house to operate from has created additional challenges. It has been a challenge to keep our gear secure and maintained, patrol members personal belongings safe, and operate with gear spread across different locations. On the positive side, we strengthened our relationship with the Lifeguards as we were required to share their space and proved to ourselves that we were able to operate in such a minimalistic setting and facilities. That said, over the season a PhD student surveyed many of our patrol members, and the overwhelming consistent message was to “GIVE US A CLUB HOUSE!”. A further finding of that survey, was to highlight the feeling that the club as a whole needs to provide better pathways to continued involvement for women and young people. As a lifesaving group we worked together to overcome the challenges that presented themselves and continued to deliver our lifesaving capabilities for the community and most importantly, no lives lost. The monthly Life Saving Committee meetings have been extremely positive with a lot of great information shared between captains and committee members. Beyond their patrol duties, attending these meetings and sharing learnings is the main additional duty of a patrol captain.Total patrol members changes throughout the year as new members join, and non-attending members are removed or archived, but at the end of the season the patrol roster had 301 members.Rostered attendance continues to be a challenge with attendance just under 60%, and a disappointing 20% not advising their patrol captain that they wouldn’t be at patrol. This was an area I hoped to improve as Vice Captain, but been extremely challenging to impact as a lifesaving group without wider support. This is an area that personally I think puts our club in a very poor light and wouldn’t be tolerated at most other clubs. Hopefully once we have proper facilities we will see an improvement here.Cronulla once again twice provided patrols to support Garie SLSC as they continue to struggle to attract sufficient members to fill a full roster. A big thank you to the members who volunteered to do extra patrols. Garie can be a very challenging beach, at it would be great to see more younger members with better water skills there, rather than the usual faces, if we are asked for support again next season. There are a few Patrol Captain changes next year, with some long serving patrol captains stepping aside and making way for some new blood. Carlo Villanti and David Brukmann who have both been patrol captains for I don’t know how long, are moving over, with Rodd Sanchez and Chris Hodge stepping into the breach. My own Patrol Captain Stuart ‘Stewie’ Spencer is being

replaced by Jared McLachlan, and Greg Cooper is swapping hats with Ritchie Hedley. It is great to see our patrol captains being willing to make way for some new blood, and I thank them all for their service and support. The patrol competition was hotly contested again this year. The competition covers patrol attendance, training, surf and lifesaving skills, and management contribution, and I think the closeness of the competition is a testament to the fairness of the structure which has evolved over the 6 years since I re-jigged it. Patrol members joined the Sunday races 397 times, an almost 100 race growth from last year, Wendy must be doing something right (with Darryl in attendance). This year’s winning patrol took out first place in 3 of the 7 criteria, leaving them just 4 points clear of second place. Congratulations to Patrol 8 and Patrol Captain, Dave Brukmann on a well-deserved win. This season 40 members earned the 100% Award, and 7 members the Outstanding Patrol Attendance Award (100% less one with a substitute). Thank you to all the 100% Award and OPAA recipients for your service over the year, and congratulations on your achievement. Finally, to our Patrol Person of the Year. This award was decided by a process of nominations from Patrol Captains, and then 9 candidates were interviewed by the Club Captain and myself over 2 nights. In the end we were unable to split two candidates, with both Chris and I giving them both the same scores separately and when summed together. We decided the only fair thing was to have dual Patrol Person of the Year winners, Steve Massone from Patrol 3, and Kyle McLachlan from Patrol 4. Congratulations Steve and Kyle.In signing off for the year and from my time as Vice Captain, thanks must go to all of our Life Saving Committee, Patrol Captains, Vice captains and IRB crews over the years. I have spoken often both at the Lifesaving Committee, and Management Committee level of the need for the old guard to be willing to step aside to make space

Darryl Easton - Club Vice Captain

for the new leaders. I often hear the club leaders speak about the need to step down to allow younger members to step up, but it seems for many that applies to others and not themselves. For the club to survive and thrive, we can not continue to have an active youth involvement in competition until their early 20s, then have them leave the club and hopefully return in their 30s as ‘nipper parents’, and then cajoled into doing patrols again, and maybe move into leadership and management roles after that. This season, most of our rostered patrol hours were done by members between 45 and 65 years old, nearly 3 times as many hours as the sum of hours of those between 20 and 40. In my opinion space needs to be made for our young members to not only ‘attend’ the club, but to be involved in the management and development of the club. I hope that this area will continue to be an area of focus for the club executive, as it is a cultural change that needs to occur, and a club wide approach that needs to extend well beyond the lifesaving group. If the member I hope will be voted into the Vice-Captain role next season gets the support of the membership, it will be great to see a much younger, ex-competitor, and long servicing Cronulla member continue their path into the club management. I wish that person all the success and provide my commitment to give them my full support and commitment. Finally, to our Patrolling Members from this season and the previous ones. Thank you all for your service, especially with consideration of the conditions we needed to operate in. Without your contributions, our club would not be able to meet our obligations to our various stakeholders, and most importantly, keep the public safe from harm. I hope that you will return next season to continue our life saving service and maintain our club’s high standards of Life Saving.Yours in Life Saving,Darryl Easton - Club Vice Captain

CHIEF INSTRUCTOR’S REPORTLooking back what a season, it will go down as one of the most challenging ones for training in the Club’s history. The interruption with the Covid virus stopped all activities and put training on hold in March 2020 till the restart in October 2020.The safety requirements to restart training were a challenge with us having to use North Cronulla club house. The squad consisted of new SRC and some SRC to Bronze. Then we were able to utilise the RSL to resume a Bronze squad that was started pre Covid and finally get them to sit their exam. The final Bronze squad was trained thanks to the Surf Boat Captain Pat Bourke who allowed the group to use his rumpus room. It may seem that training was not being done this season but we trained.SRC 33Bronze 28ARTC 15SMIRB 14SMBM 5I would like to thank all the Trainers for donating their time as it is a big commitment and to Robert Short for mentoring the Trainers this season.

CRAYS CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT The Cronulla Junior Activity Group (JAG) 2020/21 season was like no other. We returned to the beach under strict COVID conditions that would threaten the ongoing operation of nippers if not appropriately adhered to. With 600+ registered nippers the weekly Sunday nipper program was split into two sessions to limit numbers (of nippers and spectators), and the Under 6 and Under 7 age groups were based at Gunnamatta Bay for the season. Such was the success of the split program that this will now continue into future seasons.Once again we were faced with the challenge of operating our Sunday activities without clubhouse facilities, and once again our nipper executive, age managers, parents and helpers made the most of the situation, unpacking the bunker and container early each Sunday morning and working out of the tents, before packing it all away and handing the beach back to the public. Unfortunately, some Sunday activities were lost due to circumstances beyond our control. Severe heat (the sand was simply too hot to hold nippers on one day), surf conditions, beach erosion, all had an impact on our Sunday activities. Credit goes to the JAG executive, water safety team and local lifeguards. All teams worked together to make crucial decisions, with the number one priority being our nippers safety. Speaking of Sundays….did someone say nippers are welcome at the Sunday Surf Races? Throughout the season Darryl and Wendy Ward warmly welcomed any nipper who wanted to compete in the Sunday Surf Races, and compete they did…in great numbers. This was a fantastic environment for our nippers (and their parents) to engage and compete with senior club members every week – an opportunity to meet new people, have some fun and learn some new skills. It was awesome to see the nippers participating in this on the beach and then joining other club members at the social function afterwards for prize giving. None of the above would be possible without the support of our water safety team who each week allow our nippers to enjoy the water activities. A big thank you to Tristan Howison who, along with a cohort of volunteers, works closely with our Patrols, and the Sutherland Shire Lifeguards to allow us to safely deliver our Sunday water programs. At the start of the season, our Under 14 group went through a process to appoint the Cronulla JAG Club Captains and Vice-Captains. We were very proud to announce Caitlin Schneider and Max Workman as respective Captains, and Bella Ingram and Harry Braine as respective Vice-Captains. All four of these leaders lead their peers throughout the season on Sundays, on patrol and at carnivals with maturity and acceptance of responsibility. Congratulations Caitlin, Bella, Max and Harry, you should be very proud of your contribution to Cronulla SLSC.Under the guidance and leadership of our Lifesaving Coordinator, Rodd Sanchez we continued to implement a greater focus on learning and developing new skills

in relation to lifesaving and water safety. The program found the right balance to include all nippers, be they competitive or non-competitive kids. During the season we also specifically focused on upskilling the U13 age groups to better prepare them for completion of their Surf Rescue Certificate in season 2021/22. All of our 2020/21 Under 14’s gained their Surf Rescue Certificate and went onto patrol for CSLSC. A special mention and thank you to our experienced trainers Carlo Villanti and Rodd Sanchez. We once again conducted our Blue Fins program over a multi-week program. Under the leadership of Yvette Larkin, Lisa Dietrich and Georgia Carter, our group continued to develop their skills in a fun all-inclusive environment for all. The increasing opportunities for children and young adults to participate meaningfully in inclusion initiatives across nipper and carnival activities is an important development for SLS and all families involved. It was at a competition level that our season was most heavily impacted – largely due to COVID. Nearly all Carnivals were cancelled and those that were run were done so on the basis of ‘attend, compete, leave’, and in all instances the beach and water events were held in different locations (and in some instances on different weekends). One of the positives to come from this was the creation of the Bate Bay Series, which saw nippers amongst the four clubs competing over multiple weekends on a point score basis.Unfortunately, the Branch Age Championships were heavily impacted again through relocation of some events to alternative beaches and cancellation of other events. Consistent with previous years this was not ideal lead-in to State Age Championships for our competitors. The NSW State Championships were again held at Swansea-Belmont but this time with age groups split across specific days, and beach and water separated into different locations. With a team of 75

Matt Aitken - Chairman, Cronulla JAG

competitors, we gathered at Cronulla RSL for our pre state presentation. All teams were presented with their touring uniforms and we had a great team presentation afternoon. Thank you to Jane Brinckley and the apparel team who again ensured Cronulla was dressed and represented in a smart and cohesive manner right across the beach. There were some brilliant results across all disciplines with many expectations exceeded. We had many finalists and semi-finalists, and strong results across our teams’ events. Congratulations to our gold, silver and bronze medallists, and our numerous individual and team finalists all contributing valuable points for the club. Most importantly congratulations to all of our competitors who donned the famous sky blue, black and white cap, and competed to the best of their ability.A regular highlight for the weekend was our traditional team dinner at Swansea Golf Club – this year we had two dinners to cater for different attendees based on the split program.Thank you to our team managers, Brad Turner, Sam Schneider, Chris Giles and Ben Schneider for their leadership over the Championships. Thank you also to our water safety and officials who allowed our kids to compete, it was encouraging to see so many new officials. We need to keep building on both our water safety and official numbers next season. Throughout the season our coaching teams spent many hours training our nippers. This was the first season for Jay Furniss as Head Nipper Coach and he has proven to be a fantastic addition to our coaching line-up. Jay, along with Bano, Brainy, Ryan, Goodie, and the assistance of a number of our cadet athletes, ensured our competitors had access to a wealth of knowledge and experience from which to further develop their water skills. On the beach, Mark Redrup and his team of coaches once again put together a great program for our beach athletes.

A big thank to Sam Schneider too for all of her tireless work liaising with coaches, athletes, age managers and parents on team selection process and all matters competition. Congratulations to Ben Schneider, Jackson Turner and the U12G Beach Relay team who were all nominated for Surf Lifesaving Sydney awards. Ben was announced as the Junior Age Manager of the Year, recognising his significant contribution to nippers across multiple age groups and areas of CSLSC - we are lucky he will still be part of the JAG for many years to come.I was also proud to attend the CSLSC International Women’s Day event and listen to our Nipper Captain (Caitlin Schneider) and Vice-Captain (Bella Ingram) both join a panel to talk about their experience in nippers and our club. Both were fantastic and proudly represented the JAG. Thank you to the Club Executive team, led by our President, Chris Giles, for their continuous support of the JAG. And many thanks to Jenny and the office team for the countless hours spent on carnival, registration and administration requirements for the JAG. This season we had quite a lot of change in the JAG Executive team, with a number of role changes and new members joining the team. I believe the team did an outstanding job throughout the season as we look to lay the platform for stability, consistency, and succession in the years to come. A big thank you to Richie Hedley, Tamara Summers, Russell Brinckley, Ali Sanders, Sam Schneider and Rodd Sanchez. I am looking forward to the season ahead with the brand new clubhouse and ongoing investment in coaching and competition structures. With so many great families involved in the club, we are laying a great platform for future success in the sky blue, black and white. Bring on season 2021/22.Matt Aitken - Chairman, Cronulla JAG

CRAYS SECRETARY’S REPORT The 2020/21 season was certainly one that set new challenges for the Executive team, Age Managers and all our volunteers.   However, with great organisation we managed to run a full season. The staggered start times and use of Gunnamatta Bay proved to be very popular, not only for the parents, but also the Nippers as it enabled them more time in the flag pits, surf, and on the boards which are always popular. With over 650 Nippers we certainly have a great depth and momentum being built, supported by world-class coaches and generous volunteers.  Whether or not you compete, or simply enjoy the weekly nippers activities the smiles on the kids faces and sportsmanship is something we should all be proud of.Personally I spend a lot more time around the water doing water safety and want to thank Tristan and the regular Water Safety team who show up every week and give their relentless encouragement to the kids, building confidence and passing on their own skills.   This year I was particularly proud of the under 14’s who, after completing their own SRC, helped with water safety each week and provided mentorship to the Nippers.   I can see how the Nippers look up to them every week and we had some amazing break throughs with swims and paddles around the buoys after many tears.

As we close off the season we have much to look forward to in 21/22, starting with our new clubhouse and continuing the momentum we built this year.See you on the beach.Tamara Summers

CRAYS WATER SAFETY REPORTIt is only with the support, commitment and enthusiasm of the water safety team that our children are able to train, compete and develop their skills. Fundamental skills, so they may contribute fully to the core function of the “Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club” into the future, and that is, saving lives. The close working relationship developed over previous seasons with the Lifesaving Committee and respective patrol captains continued on this season, giving our Sunday mornings on the beach a distinctly “one club” feel. In addition, we continued to build on our relationship with the Council Lifeguards, whose willingness to both assist and accommodate any way they could, made far easier the running of nippers in often trying beach conditions and in dealing with the many Covid requirements.   I would like to warmly thank them for working with us so closely on Sunday mornings. These relationships make Sunday morning nipper activities far easier to organise and indeed possible. This season the water safety team faced the additional challenge of Nippers running a split session each Sunday to comply with various Covid restrictions on numbers at the beach. This meant our water safety numbers were spread thinly and we were grateful for the arrival of a large group of under 8’s parents who, having completed their Bronze Medallion, immediately volunteered for Water Safety. We also welcomed back a number of last season’s under 14’s who joined the Water Safety team, along with a number of this season’s

under 14s having completed their SRCs.This season the water safety team continued to focus on maintaining both compliance and strong well-delineated processes in an environment where we drew on a core group of volunteers week in week out, supported by new team members joining as they completed their Bronze and SRC. This has placed us well, and strongly aided in meeting our water safety obligations this season and we will continue to look to build our numbers from parents of younger age groups as well as provide the opportunity for our cadets to remain actively involved in the Club through assisting with Water Safety. This season also saw the addition of fresh attire for the team and I would like to thank the sponsors for making us look like a team, and extend that to those who worked tirelessly to make it happen. For fear of omission I shall not name them, but I would like to thank those who: arrived early to get the gear down from the container; got boats ready; set courses; drove the IRB; swum around the course numerous times; encouraged concerned kids; paddled boards; helped ashore those who felt they couldn’t make it; counted kids in and out of the water; started races; attended countless training sessions; fulfilled our requirements at carnivals; packed up long after others had left. You make me proud to be part of such a dedicated, productive and above all selfless team.Tristan Howison - Crays Water Safety Coordinator

EDUCATION AND LIFE SAVING COORDINATOR REPORTIn my first year in this position, it was fabulous to see the happy faces of the nipper kids, parents and age managers week in and week out. My thanks goes out to all the hard working individuals that come together to make our club an organisation of surf lifesaving excellence. The season brought challenges with the lack of a clubhouse which were met, challenged and overcome.Gratitude goes to all the age managers and their assistants who kept surf education in front of mind every single week. There were countless hours shared to help our nipper kids meet their surf educational needs and develop up and coming lifesavers. We were able to facilitate the Under 11s to 13s with scenarios and practical (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) CPR mannequin work on the grass and beach for real-life situations. Our main goals are still to regularly practice tube and board rescue skills, and signal communication. We are happy to report that a total of 491 nippers completed their surf education during the 2020-2021 nipper season, which was an outstanding achievement. The awards for Surf Education are breakdown as follows: 90x under 6 completed Surf Play 1 47 x under 7 completed Surf Play 2 90 x under 8 received Surf Aware 1 Certificate 69 x under 9 received Surf Aware 2 Certificate 57 x under 10 received Surf Safe 1 Certificate 63 x under 11 received Surf Safe 2 Certificate 35 x under 12 received Surf Smart 1 Certificate 40 x under 13 received Surf Smart 2 certificate

During the season we were proud to train, assess and announce 33 new Surf Rescue Certification (SRC) patrolling members, who entered into the ranks of Cronulla patrolling members. These young adults completed their nipper journey and transformed from under 14’s to gain their Surf Rescue Certificate ably trained by Carlo Villanti and Rodd Sanchez. They performed admirably during their training and assessment and made Crounalla proud. The new SRC’s are now patrolling regularly throughout the season and making lasting memories. For the next season, surf education is looking at creating scenario-based training which incorporates surf skills and first aid skills, utilizing mannequins in the training scenarios. The new season will see a whole new Under 14s progressing into the Surf Rescue Certificate. We are trying to assess them prior to the start of season to assist with water safety. Rodd Sanchez

U14 NIPPER CAPTAIN REPORT - CAITLIN SCHNEIDERAs one of the largest groups of Under 14 girls to come through Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club in the past few years it was a great honour to be elected as Captain. This season was going to be different to any other due to the Covid pandemic but we were determined to make it a great season….and we did! The challenges of no clubhouse meant we had to do an intense version of our SRC. Thanks to Rodd and Carlo who helped us, we were excited to become the newest SRC members of Cronulla SLSC. We nailed our SRC assessment (especially the girls) and some of us literally ran from our assessment at North Cronulla to Wanda to compete in the Bate Bay Series Ironperson. It wasn’t long until we joined our Patrols and are enjoying being part of great teams helping to keep our beach safe.Sunday Nippers in 2020/21 was different with two time slots and no clubhouse, so we ran the BBQ from early Sunday morning until lunchtime every weekend. It was nothing for many of us Under 14’s to be at the beach for six or more hours on a Sunday. Not that we mind, hanging out at the beach with our friends is the best way to spend a Sunday. Our parents loved it too, especially all the hours on the BBQ and snow cone machine, setting up and packing up. We helped with Nipper activities and water safety and really enjoyed helping younger Nippers gain their confidence in the water. This season we had minimal opportunities for our more competitive Under14’s to compete in carnivals due to Covid. However, when we could, we did and our small but mighty group that went to State had a fabulous time. It was a shame our beachies and wateries were separated for our last State but we made the most of the situation.

One of the highlights of our season was the inaugural “Careers Day” organised by Ben and Brainey. We spent the afternoon at the Bay and had the opportunity to try all the different things that you can do in the surf club beyond nippers. Lots of us loved the surf boats and I am pretty sure Pat is recruiting already. We had rides on IRB’s, Jetski, paddled ski’s, saw how drones operated and tried all the different aspects that surf club offers. The afternoon finished with jumps off the wharf and pizza and we were all excited about staying in the surf club and getting involved. Bella and I also had the great privilege of attending the “40 Years of Women in Surf Lifesaving” dinner. It was an honour to go and hear from amazing women in our Club. We were both nervous, but honoured, to be asked to be part of panel answering questions on stage and it was incredible to be part of such an important evening. Our end of season trip to Port Stevens (we didn’t even try to book to go to Queensland) was an awesome weekend of fun, laughs and experiences. We were so grateful that after all the fundraising we could enjoy such a great weekend. It gave our group one last chance to have fun together before we went our separate ways for winter. We made lots of memories and didn’t let some local flooding stop our fun. Finally, I would like to say a huge thanks to all our parents who have helped in so many ways not only this season but also over the past 9 years. Thank you for taking us to Nippers and allowing Cronulla SLSC to become part of our life, our friends and our happy place. Nippers has made life long friendships, taught us resilience and how rewarding helping others can be. Thank you to all the Coaches, Executive and Members who help make our surf club journey so memorable. Thank you to all the Under 14’s for not only a great season but a great many seasons. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us and I know we are all better people for being part of Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club. Lastly, good luck to the next Under 14 cohort for next season. See you on the beach!

U14 NIPPER CAPTAIN REPORT - MAX WORKMANBetween the tail end of a lockdown, a non-existent club house and a few storms, it’d be safe to say that the 2020/2021 season at Cronulla was pretty wild. For the Under 14’s, our season started normally enough, weather was good, and thanks to a pandemic we’d been shut inside for a few months. But things stayed steady over the season and we were lucky enough to get our SRC’s, thanks to solid work on both our part and our Instructors - Carlo and Rodd. After a season of snow-cone making and working at the barbecue, we managed to make enough to head up to Port Stephens and have a great time. We also enjoyed careers days, pitching in as water safety, and generally giving anyone meant to help or supervise us a migraine. Now this here is the part where I should tell you about all the fun we had at the carnivals across the season, but with COVID constantly at our heels, they were few and far between. But I can at least tell you about State, because at State, the nippers, water safety and age managers put in a massive effort, and our nippers performed incredibly, doing their absolute best in everything, and almost always coming away with something to show for it. It might not have been a medal, or a place in the finals, but it sure was something, because every nipper, manager, water safety person and coach there, above everything else, was representing Cronulla and all that came with that, which is certainly something to be proud of.Over the course of the season, we really got to know everyone in the Under 14s, and I feel like everyone got at least a little more confident around each other, even peers who I’d barely talked to despite having completed eight consecutive years together came out of their shell, and truly became a part of the club for what felt like the first time. During this, I got to learn just how dedicated these nippers really were to being a part of this club. Some of them would wake up early enough to beat the sun to take a train or drive big distances just to participate, others dragged themselves out of bed every morning, or from school every afternoon, to get to the beach to better themselves at training. No matter who you were or what you did, I’d like to thank the Under 14s and say that I had a great time getting to know you all.

At the end of season Under 14’s trip, we made the absolute best of everything, between dolphin watching, hiking and annoying camp security (it wasn’t our fault they made such an early curfew) we had a proper fun time, and I’d be stupid not to mention and thank our parents and my fellow Under 14’s for working so hard to raise funds and organise the trip. Finally, thank you to the parents, whether you were age managers or water safety, coaches or just there to support their kids, thank you. Whether you’ve been here since the Under 6’s or only joined this year, the surf club experience is one that sticks with kids and builds character like you wouldn’t believe. It might seem small and we might have whined every Sunday morning or every night before a carnival, but this sticks with us for life, and we are grateful for the effort you put in. I wish good luck to next year’s Under 14’s doing their SRC’s, as well as the rest of the club, and say bring on the season of 2021/2022. I can’t wait to see where this great club goes.

THE BLUE FINSThis season we had 7 registered members. Weekly attendance ranged from 3 to 7 members each Sunday dependant on Covid restrictions, the weather, beach access and their family holiday/commitments etc. With a new club house and accessible change facilities nearly open we should promote our Inclusion program more broadly and seek additional members and volunteer support to grow our BlueFins numbers. We started our BlueFins program later this season in December due to Covid uncertainty, yet we ran weekly most Sundays for the remainder of the season up until the end of February. We had Georgia Carter, Lisa Dietrich and myself as the age manager volunteers with additional water safety volunteers Nathan Ford, Tim Ford and Flynn Larkin and patrol members  assisting as required.  I would like to also take this opportunity to thank Georgia, Lisa and the boys for their energy, commitment, surf skills and care.A highlight of the season would have to be getting some of our members out on the IRB one session in some challenging yet exciting conditions - sincere thanks to Chris Barber for captaining. The Wanda Carnival was held on the 20th of February and 3 of our BlueFins members represented our club proudly, once again showing great enthusiasm and sportsmanship in each event.

We look forward to a returning season in our new clubhouse with its improved and more accessible facilities and welcome any new volunteers who may wish to assist in running our group.Yvette Larkin - BlueFins Age Manager

OPERATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT Zimzala restaurant had a difficult trading year mainly due to Covid restrictions. Day to day operations were affected with the on then off again 1 to 4 square metre rule of social distancing which caused many cancellations, but with help from the club rescue rental package and the Government JobKeeper this has allowed owners Ray and Rebecca Nelson to service their customers in their usual professional manner. The clubs generous rent relief package was well appreciated and without this support Zimzala would definitely have to shut the doors. The club rental rescue support was reduced to 20% from the outset increasing to 70% in December 2020 returning to 100% by April 2021. Maintenance continued to be an ongoing financial burden, and due to the harsh seaside conditions the outside pergola was replaced at a cost of $85,000.00. Before undertaking this renovation the switch board had to be relocated to the restaurant area due to the fire safety compliance, while ongoing sewage problems continue to cause expensive repair costs. Sutherland Shire Council implemented a traffic management plan to offset works on the promenade to avoid expected disruptions to deliveries with work involving, putting in bollards, replacing light pole, replacing several large timber blocks and installing a drain across the front of the boat shed.

Sports Complex Elite Personal Training and Cronulla Swim School.New owner Mark Simpson took over the business lease from Cameron Hoban in October 2020. The Covid crisis had a devastating effect on trade to the extent that business trading was impossible and the doors were closed. The clubs rescue package along with Jobkeeper saved this business from going under. From the outset rent was reduced to 10% then over the following months when Covid rules started to relax gradually started to return to normal with steady rent increases from month to month and returning to 100% by December 2020.Repairs and maintenance for this period included, a total repaint of walls on pool deck, pool surrounds water pressure cleaned, equipment upgrade, reline the return line on the baby pool. SS Council carried out a thorough dilapidation report, which revealed some concerning results. SS Council complex upgrade responsibilities have been shelved for the time being due to negotiations with the club regarding the head lease.Barefoot on the beach (juice bar) Trade remained strong during Covid and as previously reported this business was stand alone when Covid hit not requiring rental relief from the club which was to the full credit of the Sotiropoulos family for their hard work and determination to support their customers with a vast range of popular and healthy foods. The income from these operations continues to be an integral part of the club financial future so I would encourage all members to support with their patronage when any occasion arises. Thank you to the following Operations Committee members for their continued support, Phil Hamilton LM, John Bentley LM, Neale Johnston LM, and Bill Lloyd. All revenue for these operations is reflected in the treasurer’s report.Darryl Ward LM - Operations Committee Convenor

CHIEF GEAR STEWARD’S REPORTDue to the Clubhouse refurbishment project we did not have the Club gear sheds available again this season so changes to lifesaving gear and equipment management remained a challenge – which I believe was well met by all.Gear inspection was held on Saturday 5th September 2020. Similar to last year, all of the Cronulla SLSC lifesaving equipment was prepared and presented in the grounds and building at Hungry Point. There was an impressive outdoor and indoor display. The patrol arena and rescue equipment was set up in the park area and IRBs and motors set up in the car park areas while the first aid, resuscitation and training equipment was all laid out inside the building – with some adjustments for Covid related space restrictions.

This equipment included the following items:19 rescue boards 2 stretchers35 rescue tubes 18 resuscitation mannequins10 radios 3 trainer defibrillators2 patrol first aid kits & supplies 5 IRB1 trauma/haemorrhage kit 6 IRB fuel cells3 spinal boards and straps 6 outboard motors2 defibrillators 11 lifejackets4 oxy-viva kits Patrol arena and tent4 suction equipment setsSignal flags, evacuation (shark) flags and beach signsMiscellaneous items including swim fins, loud hailer, binoculars, patrol bum bags.

The inspection team visited all clubs in the Branch in one day, visiting Cronulla early afternoon before moving on to the other Bate Bay Clubs. The following members helped prepare the club gear for the start of the season - Rod Dunn, David Dalla-Camina, Robert Walker, Graham Burt, Glenn McLachlan, Tristan Howison, Chris Chambers, Rob Short Jr, Darryl Easton and Chris Barber. It was a very successful inspection. Thank you to all involved.Sutherland Shire Council Lifeguard shed was unavailable to us this season due to the lifeguards’ operational needs. Club President at the time, Richard Pinker arranged with Council to allow us to establish a fenced compound on the Esplanade

underneath the Monro Balcony overhang, for the duration of the season. This gave us a secure and safe place to store all of our essential patrol equipment including rescue boards, rescue tubes and two fully fitted out IRB and from which to operate our essential services. Sutherland Council Lifeguards allowed us to continue to share their facilities for storage of first-aid, oxy-vivas, defibrillator kits, spinal equipment, patrol radios and IRB fuel. The Polar Bears area above the Sports Complex housed the necessary items required to allow lifesaving award training to proceed. All necessary equipment and consumables were moved to these locations ready for the start of the season with the remainder of the equipment remaining at Hungry Point, ready to access as needed during the season.Rod Dunn continued as Radio Officer this past season and ensured that all radios were in top condition throughout the season. David Dalla-Camina continued in the role of First Aid Officer and all first aid equipment and consumables were readily available and of a high standard. Rod and David also kept watch over and cared for all patrol equipment through the season. Robert Walker and Graham Burt, as IRB Captain and

Rob Short - Chief Gear Steward

34 35

Vice-Captain respectively, managed all of the IRB items.Lifesaving is our core business and the cost of purchases of new and replacement equipment along with service and repairs is a necessary but reasonably low annual expense. Cronulla always has good lifesaving equipment available. Costs have been a little lower over the past few seasons as we have not bought a lot of new equipment while out of the Clubhouse. Excluding IRB items, the Club expenditure to be equipped for this past season was approximately $7,120. This included board repairs ($1,660), radio servicing ($247), oxy-viva and defibrillator servicing ($483) plus first-aid and resuscitation consumables ($837). We replaced the patrol tent canopy ($477). We also purchased patrol uniforms, rash shirts and sun hats ($1407) plus sun screen, log books, signs and other patrol items ($383) from the SLSA shop. We purchased patrol caps ($1200) from Club family company, Fineprint and incurred miscellaneous expenditure ($423).The 2020 NSW Lifesaving Equipment Grant, funded by the NSW government and distributed by SLSNSW provided an amount of $4,868 which could be used to purchase equipment from a set list. We obtained a defibrillator, patrol apparel, some resuscitation training equipment and first-aid bum bags. The Australian Government again gave every Club in the country a $5,000 grant towards the cost of lifesaving equipment. With this we purchased an additional defibrillator, three IRB fuel cells and essential first aid equipment. Surf Life Saving Australia provided $1,800 (78 uniforms) as the annual patrol uniform subsidy.

As in previous seasons all new Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate awardees had a patrol cap presented at their assessment and a uniform and sun hat on their first patrol. All new IRB drivers and crewpersons were presented a SLSA rash shirt and peaked cap to wear while on duty. New Patrol Captains were supplied with a heavy duty SLSA patrol jacket and peaked cap. The Club continued to subsidise the purchase of PFDs by IRB Crewpersons and Drivers if they wanted to purchase their own. Having our lifesavers fitted properly and safely on the beach and in the water is a high priority, a relatively small cost and very well justified.Thank you to all of the Patrol Captains and their patrolling Members who used and cared for the Club lifesaving gear during the season and managed it well in the temporary compound. Cronulla SLSC has a large amount of lifesaving equipment which must always be ready for purpose. This past season I believe that the arrangements worked very well and patrols were able to operate as well as they have in the past. Importantly, I believe that once again we have been able to provide the Club with the very good equipment for patrol, water safety, training, competition and community purposes.See you on the beach at Cronulla – where else would you rather be?Rob Short - Chief Gear Steward

BUILDING DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEEAt the start of this season we had anticipated moving into our newly refurbished Clubhouse very soon. Following on from the Practical Completion it was thought that minor issues would be addressed and rectified and the building would be certified and provided an Occupation Certificate so that we could start to use the new facilities. Unfortunately this did not eventuate as expected. Due to some fire protection issues related to poor water supply to the pre-existing hydrant system, occupation was delayed. The delay extended significantly and final certification and occupation was still not possible at the end of the season and at the time of writing this report. Towards the end of the building stage we had installed a new fire hydrant system following revised advice from our fire engineer and as required by Fire Rescue NSW (FRNSW). When tested early in 2020 this hydrant failed to meet the highest water flow and pressure standards. This is despite pre construction tests indicating satisfactory performance of the existing hydrant mains. Our fire engineer submitted to FRNSW for a review and acceptance of hydrant performance based on the standard. After a three months period FRNSW responded requiring a performance demonstration. Unfortunately, at this time the flow and pressure had worsened. Professional advice was that an enhanced water source must be provided to the hydrant. The only solution viable for our location was the connection of the new hydrant to the large water mains in Surf Lane. This advice was accepted by the Management Committee and approval to proceed provided.A specialist consultant was engaged and work commenced with Sydney Water on planning and approval stages in August 2020. Thanks to assistance from our local State MP, Mark Speakman, the early stages were expedited. Unfortunately, the latter stages became exceedingly protracted and Sydney Water approval for the works to be done was not provided until after season end, in May 2021. Work commenced almost immediately and at the time of writing we were waiting for the final Sydney Water inspection and connection processes.

DEFECTSOnce the new building was completed there was a twelve month defect liability period when all aspects of the building were checked for quality to detect items that did not comply with the design specification or operational requirements. These aspects inspected included construction, finishes, fit-out and the performance of equipment etc. Defect inspections were conducted over several phases with an initial extensive review immediately post completion, progressive inspections over ensuing months and a final extensive inspection done immediately prior to the defect liability period ending in February 2021. As these were conducted all defects detected were compiled in a report which was presented to the builder so that they would be resolved.

The initial defect list was reasonably extensive and the bulk of the items were resolved satisfactorily in a reasonable time frame. There were some items that the builder challenged as either being related to the age and nature of the heritage core building or as acceptable by current building code standards. We conducted lengthy discussions with the builder on these outstanding defects. There were also a few other issues including some construction variation costs that we did not accept. These plus the unresolved defects potentially put us in dispute with the builder. In order to settle this in a timely manner and avoid a formal dispute the Club and Momentum Built reached a mutually agreeable settlement on all outstanding matters in March 2021. At this time the building can be considered fully handed over and all dealings with Momentum Built, other than warranty matters that may arise, are completed.

OCCUPATIONFollowing completion of the new hydrant water connection there will be a few other tasks to complete. The hydrant performance must be tested and some statutory signage installed. Then the fire engineer must submit a compliance report. The certifier has also required updating of all safety certificates due to the extended delay. This process is underway. The certifier will then complete his final check prior to issuing an occupation certificate. At the time of writing we expect occupancy some time post mid-year – a delay of well over twelve months.

PHOTO & TROPHY COMMITTEEFinally some light at the end of the tunnel for the Photo and Trophy Committee. The arduous task of returning club honour boards, photos and memorabilia to their rightful positions within our clubhouse is imminent. These items have been in a storage facility at Kurnell for three plus years whilst the redevelopment took place and it will be an interesting exercise to see how they have fared during that time. After last years 114th AGM, it was pleasing to have the newly elected President agree with the committee that there should be no hurry in returning such items to the club. We agreed that a steady and relaxed approach is necessary to ensure that it is completed in such a way that everything is considered and measured.A kindly reminder to members is that building trends these days toward higher ceilings and larger glass windows, as reflected in the redevelopment, has left little ‘real estate’ available for all items to be replaced. Careful and meticulous consideration will be given to all that was removed from the club and items will be prioritised for replacement in the new building. This will be an unenviable task, as not all articles may be returned. With the planned official opening of the club for late September, we have been asked to provide an historical display by the newly formed New Club House Opening Sub Committee. That committee was advised that the major consideration required is that until an Occupational Certificate is issued, no items can be moved into the building. Furthermore, all items in storage will be required to be moved in entirety and time would certainly be against us. At best, a photographic slideshow displayed on the TV monitors situated throughout the building, should suffice and satisfy that request.

ANNUAL GOLF DAY REPORT We were blessed to have a nice sunny day, after several days of heavy rain. With registrations and a beer ‘n’ burger lunch, completed, an excellent turnout of 114 golfers took to the fairways. The participant’s great attitude and generosity was  absolutely sensational, as was the resolve of our very willing volunteer work party, who helped make the day run like clockwork. The Ambrose event concluded around 4.30pm, allowing golfers to sit down with refreshment in hand, to check and sign their score cards and reminisce on what could have been.A new concept introduced for the first time - “The Non Golfers Evening” - allowed people unable to take time off work to participate in the event, the opportunity to partake in dinner, refreshments and the festivities of the evening. Our President Chris Giles welcomed a large dinner contingent of 145 to the official segment of the evening. After a sumptuous dinner we moved on to the presentation of prizes. The winners of the Ambrose handicap prize  being the team of Bryce Hopkins, Mark Hopkins, Luke Hopkins and Mitchell Elliot. Congratulations guys, a great effort in a hot field!Major sponsor, Pat Bourke, Ayers Payroll and HR Solutions, once again, deserve credit for the continued success of our Golf Day. Pat, who doubled as MC, score card scrutineer and  committee member is a great clubman who gives his all without question for the sky blue black and white. We owe due recognition to the behind the scenes contingent, Jenny Pinker and Robyn Cole, who run the CSLSC Office, their unseen contribution was phenomenal, together with a fabulous group of volunteers, our work party were tremendous. The Golf Day Committee who started planning the event from February 2021 are to be commended for their efforts, not forgetting our hole sponsors and local business and individual   prize donors, all of whom make an amazing team. You are to be congratulated, take a bow and many thanks for your efforts.   Special mention to: Jeremy Macpherson, Emma Larssen and Carole Larssen, all who worked throughout the day, Jeremy and Emma did a fantastic job setting up the prize tables and Carole our hard working photographer, a job well done. Our auctioneer, Murray Cole of McGrath Partners did a great job, thank you. Our major auction prize donated by Luke Hanson for a 7 day stay at “Pinetrees” award winning Resort on Lord Howe Island, together with the other auction prizes, gave us a very good result for that segment of the evening.. The evening concluded with the raffle draws, where some fantastic prizes were donated by a loyal group of businesses and individuals, who will be acknowledged at the end of this report. They are to be congratulated for their continued support. Please give them your return support! Many thanks to the staff of Woolooware Golf Club and JD’s for their great service and magnificent food. Trusting next year will be bigger and better, looking forward to catching up with you all.

ANNUAL SNOW TRIP REPORT 85 Members and only 31 Beds!Because we had not been able to run the Snow Trip for the 19/20 season and had committed to including those eligible that season on this year’s trip, the always difficult logistics became a nightmare. The actual numbers for the ski trip dribble in over the weeks leading up to departure, often finalised as the coach pulls away from the kerb. Due to everyone being in lockdown and not having had holidays, we anticipated a higher than normal uptake, but could only take an educated guess at actual numbers for planning.Chris Barber and I had spent the off season trying to secure additional accommodation at lodges nearby to our traditional home, Cronulla and Christina Lodges, without much success. The lodges were either unable to take bookings for non-members, or well outside the budget.Luckily Cliff and Sundeck Hotel came to the rescue and offered an extremely generous discount so we had confidence we could accommodate all the members that wanted to attend. This was made worse when the manager at Cronulla took a members booking for 10, leaving us with only a maximum of 9 beds in our ‘home base’. Luckily again Cliff extended his invitation for heavily discounted accommodation to as many members as we required, and all was well with the world. As things grew closer, the snow season got off to a cracking start, even opening a week early, and we were greeted with some of the best snow and more lifts that I have seen for the trip weekend.

We were lucky that Cliff held to the agreed discount as Sundeck Hotel filled up with guests on a weekend he would normally open only for us. We ended up with 41 attendees which is about 10 more than normal for the last few years, with 25 of those staying in Sundeck. Since we did not have the major expense of a coach last year, the combined trip was much cheaper than 2 trips would have been, despite the luxury accommodations enjoyed by many members. We filled Christina Lodge with 12 members from Patrol 12. It was good to see a return to form for Christina, with mostly young members and lots of shenanigans on Saturday night. No snow trip is complete without the annual ‘skunno run’, and it was great to see many Patrol 12 members back up and dress down, despite their tender constitution following the previous night’s exuberances. The change in demographics of the club and active lifesavers has been more and more reflected in the make up of the ski trip. Whilst it is a great reward for older members (like me), to my mind it is important we look at ways to make the trip achievable and inviting for young members, to encourage their continued involvement and engagement with Cronulla Surf Club.

SHARK ISLAND SWIM REPORT The 2021 Shark Island Swim was like no other in recent memory. The event (and club) faced a number of challenges due to Covid-19. At one point it looked like an impossible task to even hold an event. Thanks to the whole club for pulling together and staying agile for a day that achieved great things, in an environment that continued to produce moving parts for the event, club and committee. The committee pulled together to close out a number of tasks never thrown up before, including planning to host restricted numbers of both swimmers and club members volunteering. Not to mention the implementation of a covid safety plan, which had to be approved by both local and State Government. Alongside all of this Chris Chambers, who lead a lot of our documentation, was interstate for a considerable amount of time. Well done to him on his remote work and also well done to Rodney Dunn for stepping up to support the process and in fact become the main writer of our documentation. There have been a number of key learnings that I believe have improved the event and will remain in place. Some of these are the volunteer register, which provided an excellent platform for both the committee and the members. This allowed us to manage a cap on volunteers only lifted two weeks from race day. It also allowed us to gauge who was comfortable doing what. The committee also has a fantastic read on exact resources needed for different aspects of the swim. It’s safe to say the volunteer register is here to stay. The social distancing markings at the front of the marquee, simple but effective in not only helping with social distancing, this was also great for organisation. The concept of no late registrations was a big decision for us. It was necessary at the time of planning for a Covid safe event. Whilst I will not commit to no late registrations going forward. The feedback from swimmers and club volunteers was extremely positive. This tweak could in fact make the swim bigger and better in the future. The 2.3km Ace Gutters Shark Island Swim was won by Cronulla SLSC’s own Jay Furniss with Nickolas Middleton 2nd and Harry Came 3rd. Taylor Puskaric claimed 1st place in the female division followed by Jess Madden in 2nd and Frances Shires 3rd. The Pulse Property 1km Cronulla Beach fun swim was won by Kai Roberson with Harry Came 2nd and Gabriel Wilczak 3rd. The first female home was Molly Pollock with Rafaela Kopellou

2nd and Talia Field 3rd. Given that due to Covid-19 the event at one point was restricted to 500 people for each swim on the reserve at any one time (400 swimmers and 100 club volunteers), it was pleasing to have the fantastic support of Sutherland Shire Council particularly Brett Richardson and Bede Elphick of the life guard service. Nothing was too hard for them, they held us to account in terms of our Covid plan and they also stood next to us and assisted as much as they possibly could to get the event on. It was pleasing to negotiate another 150 participants in the 2.3km swim and an easing of the cap on volunteers. In terms of numbers it was pleasing to have both events sold out in full reaching our 400 swimmer and 550 swimmer capacity in both the 1km and 2.3km swims. It was pleasing to have close to 150 volunteers support the event, including a large contingent from the Crays that supported both the BBQ and water safety. Thanks to our valued sponsors and supporters: Pulse Property, Ace Gutters, Caltex, Seven News, Doran Financial Services, D’Arte Group, Eyeline, Letizza Pizza Bases. As always the whole event would not have been possible without the well-oiled machine that is the organising committee. In no particular order thanks to: Kieran Day, Rob Short, Chris Chambers, Marcus Kennedy, Scott Williams, Rodney Dunn, Greg Hewett and Greg Allum as race referee. As touched on earlier in this report, like a lot of people and groups in 2020, this group faced a number of challenges and once again all stepped up to run the event. Nothing was a problem for anyone in terms of getting on with the job. Finally, in the Capers after the event I mentioned that every member should be very proud of themselves. I meant it. The club pulled together in ways I have not seen before. If you follow the swim on social media you would see positive comments like “I felt so safe because of the wonderful water safety coverage”. Part of another comment was “simply best ocean swim in Sydney”. There were many more. Thank you to all members for putting us in a position to receive such positive feedback. RWC REPORTImagine being rostered on patrol during those stormy two weeks back in March when all the IRB’s and Helicopters were tucked away due to the wind and stormy seas. You’re on afternoon shift and the weather is simply crap: cold, wet and unrelenting rain storms. Arriving into the Lugano Road shed, you suit up in a cold clammy wet suit just handed over from the previous shift, make sure all the rescue gear is aboard your jet ski and rescue ready: flares, first aid kit, shark kit, rescue tube, rope bag, rescue sled and then a careful check on your own safety gear: lifejacket, helmet, booties, gloves, whistle, radio, spare key, EPIRB, flippers and knife. You do a final check of the fuel state, making sure its full to the brim, duck under the ski to check there’s no seaweed stuck in the water intake, radio volume is set to full blast and you launch into the driving rain and wind. A thought bubble passes by: who the hell would be out in this weather? Check the radio is tuned to the local scan channel and you make a call to Surfcom advising Support Ski 1 is operational, they ask to repeat as the background wind noise is deafening the call. Any optimism that the weather will surely clear up is suddenly toast as Surfcom comes back with a safety warning asking you to partner up with the other RWC known as Support Ski 2 for safety. So you head out into the rain in loose Starsky and Hutch formation alongside Support Ski 2. A good afternoon it will be as your wingman is another experienced Cronulla operator. Each and every patrol never fails to have its unique moments and challenges and you wonder what it is today, just how big the swells off Wanda really are and quietly hope there is no reason to head into that wild stormy surf zone today. We move off as a pair into the bay channel, turn left onto an easterly course toward the open ocean and into wow, crazy blowing stinging rain and breaking waves. Visibility is poor due to the spray, so we simply idle along at 10 knots. In just a few minutes, by chance, we come across our first customer, a windsurfer who is tired, lying on his board trailing sails and ropes and slowly trying to hand paddle back to his starting point on the beach, but is losing to the howling wind. Not wanting to ask him why?!! he simply motions us over and my partner starts to tow him back to Darook Park.

After a few conversations with our windsurfer and the Marine Rescue boat we work out we have a developing incident and radio in our 4 P’s to Surfcom as we can only account for 2 of the 3 windsurfers out there with him. We set up a search, which is simply a grid search pattern downwind of Jibbon toward Bonnie Doon. After darting around the bay for some time, monitoring Surfcom radio and checking with the rescued sailor, all ends well as the third windsurfer is found back in the carpark. We update Surfcom, who call off the backups and we settle back into patrol mode. Amazingly I had my GoPro on during some of this and the footage is worth a second look.Back into the bay swell I make a mental note on the number and experience levels of several surfski paddlers who are having a great time in the short sharp 1m swell rolling down the channel, and hope they will all be there when we go past again sometime later. The Sydney Branch operates 5 RWC (Rescue Water Craft) during the patrol season, who are on the water at 8am and finish at 6pm during summer. These are under the control of Surfcom and Duty Officers and are spread out along the coastline between Sydney Harbour South Head and Garie Beach. The key to RWC rescue ops and effectiveness is to concentrate on areas away from the normal flagged areas. The 2 Bate Bay RWC’s can be tasked anywhere and this season the incidents took place at: Botany Bay, Kurnell, the Cape Solander cliffs and rock fishing hangouts, Boat Harbour, Greenhills, the four main beaches, Jibbon, Bundeena, Garie, Figure 8 pools and all the way into Port Hacking. Cronulla can be proud of the valuable contribution and commitment our 8 RWC operators put in for a combined 478 hours for 20/21, which make Cronulla the top club for Sydney Branch this year. This is typical of past years and doesn’t include additional RWC hours put in at State by Chris Chambers and Graham Burt at Nippers, Opens and Masters carnivals.

The incidents our Cronulla crew responded to were: searching for separated skin divers, surfers taken out in huge rips, windsurfers and kite surfers separated from their boards, kayakers being blown out to sea and rescued, Figure 8 tourists in danger, Boat Harbour floaties blown out to sea, broken down cruisers, up turned tinnies, searching for missing swimmers, assisted Marine Rescue, Water Police, the Lifesaver 21 helicopter and the Sydney Branch rescue boat Surf Rescue 30. And many many direct rescues of swimmers adjacent to flagged areas and rips close to shore. In particular, on one hot and crowded day over Christmas, a Cronulla operator was commended for sharing in over 40 separate rescues with the other RWC along the Greenhills to North Cronulla stretch of rips. This season was warm and we had spectacular days out on the water sometimes with no tasking at all for the entire patrol. Whilst the day can linger on sometimes, on board the RWC is a fantastic way to enjoy the warm water, play in the swell Jibbon to Cronulla, parallel run all the way to Boat Harbour and back. We had great support and team work with the lifeguards all along the beaches, and total support of the Branch SOG leadership team and kudos to that

fantastic resource in the Surfcom operators. At times the Branch incident debriefing was engaged, which turned out to be a valuable support structure. We also supported several carnivals and events as water safety and carried out many patrol visits to help familiarise members with RWC ops and the craft itself. To the patrol captains, don’t hesitate to radio the passing RWC an invitation for a beach visit on Channel 3 and if tasking is low, a few opportunities for some rescue training off the beach and coffee. The total hours were:

IRB SECTION REPORTIt was another testing season for us with Gear Inspection first up, getting all equipment to Hungry Point and then packing up to take it all back to storage. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand. The next challenge was Patrols not having a Club House to store the equipment and the gear being left out in the elements. To maintain the equipment for Rescue ready was a task in itself. I would like to thank all the IRB Drivers for looking after the gear during the season which made my life easier, thanks again. To Graham Burt my Vice Captain, what a great job again manning Carnivals and Organising drivers and crew for the Shark Island swim.

Congratulations to all the new IRB Drivers and Crew this season, some great times and fun was had by all.A thank you to our Club Captain Chris Barber whose job is endless.A Big Thank you to the Holt Group for the donation of a new fully equipped IRB and hopefully we will have a launch date to christen the new boat. Looks like we are going to have another challenging season ahead with Covid19 and Our House, which we hope to be in soon.Stay safe and lets all pull together for a great season.Robert (Max) Walker - IRB Captain

SILVER SALTIESThe 2020-21 season saw the launch of the Silver Salties program, a  physical activity and social connections initiative for older Australians  designed by Surf Life Saving Australia in conjunction with Surf Life Saving Clubs and funded by Sport Australia’s Move It Aus – Better Ageing Grants Program.  The kick-off program at Cronulla SLSC came with great support from Laura Thurtell, SLSA Silver Salties Ambassador, and Michelle Druery. Most of the Silver Salties participants live in the Sutherland Shire, are newly retired or semi-retired and are looking at activities to do and ways of socialising and meeting new friends. At the moment there are 72 registered members of Cronulla SLSC Silver Salties.  There are 58 women and 16 men with an average age of 69.These members are active, motivated, and skilled in their own right and the club looks forward to having them further involved. The programs that have run to date are: - Walk & Talk 1: 10/11/20-22/12/20 - 33 participants- Walk & Talk 2: 9/2/21-22/6/21 - 30 participants- Catching Waves: 17/2/21-24/3/21 - 29 participants- Walk & Talk 3: 13/7/21 - 14/12/21 -17 participantsWendi Murray and Bernice Keane have been doing a wonderful job in running these programs and I hope to be involved in future programs.  Proposed programs for 2021-2022 Season:- Catching Waves  (bodyboard) proposed for November

2021- Gentle exercise for over 65’s (run by Nina Tetzlaff)

October 2021- Volunteers Program (to be run by a club member)

October 2021- Ocean Swimming, December 2021

All of these programs will attract funding from the 65+ Incentive Grant, which could be up to $540 for each program.  It would be ideal to start to communicate the clubs impending opening, courses, and activities to Silver Salties members to bring them into the club activities. The feedback that has been received from participants has been very positive, such as:- “How fantastic is that! Great recognition for everyone

involved in setting it up and keeping us walking and talking. I love Tuesdays!”

- “I love my Tuesdays with these women”!  - “Fantastic fun. Everyone did so well. The grins said it

all!”- From Wendi Murray: I’ve personally experienced many

new friendships within our Walk & Talk program, as well as a few aching limbs, lots of laughs, and many discoveries of Shire walks and tracks that I didn’t know even existed.

The absolute joy of being immersed in the Cronulla surf once again will stay with me forever. I can’t wait until our next Boogie Boarding session begins. The saltwater feeds the soul. The club looks forward to running more programs and welcoming more members next season. Thank you to all involved!

COACHING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Although we saw another difficult season due to the continuing uncertainties of COVID19, it was a relief to see most major carnivals go ahead. Everyone embraced being back on the beach in competition mode and the enthusiasm from all competitors and coaches was obvious. We were extremely fortunate to be able to head back to Aussies this year after the 2020 cancellation. Although it was a very small team in numbers, we finished an amazing 13th in the Overall Club Pointscore. This was a huge improvement on our 18th placing in 2019. Well done to all competitors! Thank you to our amazing coaches for the time and effort they gave to our competitors this season. We are so fortunate to have such experienced, talented and relatable coaches as part of the Cronulla Team. Thanks, in particular, to Guy Telfer, Stuart Braine, Jay Furniss, Michael Banister, Michael Roye, Scott Allen, Mark Redrup, Paul Littlejohn, Nathan Breen and Pat Bourke. These coaches with their expertise, have helped to improve the quality of the training sessions across all abilities with increasing numbers in attendance. We also saw the training pay off for many of our athletes with so many improvements seen throughout the season. This year, we saw the further integration of the School Development Ski Squad into the Surf Club Squads. Thanks to Mark Redrup for the implementation of this program with the Port Hacking High School students that has seen many of the students become Cronulla

SLSC members. It is also important to acknowledge the excellent efforts of Pat Bourke who has worked tirelessly to build the boat section. It is great to see potential in this section! We look forward to expanding both of these programs further. This season, we saw the continuation of the ‘One Club’ concept. The Tempo training session was the highlight where nippers, senior club members, and masters competitors all trained together on the track. Thanks to our new club member/coach Jay Furniss for being a great presence at these sessions as the motivation and inspiration it provided to all athletes was clear. Similarly, we could not wrap up this season without acknowledging the Cronulla Club spirit that has been obvious at all social gatherings, training sessions, and at carnivals. In trying circumstances while COVID19 lingers, and still without access to our clubhouse, the vibe has been incredible. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this great club. We have many new plans for the coming season as we move back into our clubhouse. I am looking forward to a great 2021/2022 season.Ryan Hartup & Mark Redrup

CADET CAPTAIN’S REPORTA reasonably crazy season again in 2020/21 for our Cadets.  There were many highlights but mostly focused on the U14’s boys and girls being their last official year as a nipper. These wonderful kids started the season by completing their SRC a few hours before a local surf carnival which was crazy!!  They spent six weeks in North Cronulla SLSC club house to complete their SRC before joining a patrol for the first time.  In February they attended a skills day in Gunnamatta Bay.  With help from SLS Sydney Branch and Support Operations, our U14’s were exposed to all sections of the Surf Life Saving Movement including Boat, Board, Ski, IRB, Drone, Jet Ski and Duty Officer operations.  A truly fun day and one to be repeated next season.   Many thanks to all that made this happen.Fundraising was a continuous requirement throughout the season.  It all paid off for 30 lucky U14 kids who headed off on the annual U14 trip to Port Stephens.  We enjoyed a dolphin cruise, surfing, eating junk, games, pool, staying up late and generally doing what kids should do – having heaps of fun over four days away from mum and dad.On the competition side, we had many good results at the Branch and State Championships, and a select few attended their very first Australian Championships.  This was their first opportunity to compete against kids from other states, which was an awesome experience.  Of course, none of this could happen without a few wonderful humans. To our U14 Age Managers, Isabel Workman and Scott Fava, your patience and

temperament is astounding.  I have seen many age managers through the years and our kids are super fortunate to have the two of you - thank you.  Backing up the age managers (and almost as patient) were Ben Schneider, Hayley Phillips, Sam Schneider, Damien Stonestreet, Tristan Howison, Michael Banister and Chris Barber – thank you for all your hard work and guidance last season.   Lastly thanks to all the parents.  Weekly BBQ, snow cones, setup, pack up, COVID, floods, etc I hope one day your kids will appreciate the effort you put into their lives.Stuart Braine - Cadet Captain

BOARD SECTION REPORTWhile it was another  year without a clubhouse, our team continued to deliver and got on with the business of the fine art of board paddling. Our section was boosted  with the return of  current Australian Open Board Champion Jay Furniss. He saw merit in our paddlers and coaching staff to take the step to return back to the Bate Bay to be coached by the great Guy Telfer. Straight away the body language and vibe all around was lifted by Jay’s presence. With the lack of carnivals in the first half of the season being cancelled due to COVID-19, it was hard to gauge how we were going as a squad. Our first major carnival was not until the end of January at Manly, then the Branch, then Wanda, followed by State, Interclub and finishing with the  Aussies. This  limited the racing experience for our squad especially those U14 and U15 who benefit and improve each time they race. Hopefully next season we will see more racing.I feel privileged to be surrounded by a good team of paddlers, coaches and supporters. I would like to especially thank Tim Ford (manager of board logistics),  Darryl and Cody Gaddes for logistic help throughout the season. I would like to acknowledge Neil Swane who kindly donated a 100kg purpose-built  rescue competition board. Thank you “Chicken Man” we all love you.To our coach Guy Telfer, you are one of the greatest blokes around, always positive, always at training and always making the right decision, thanks mate we can

all learn from you. To Ryan Hartup, thanks for keeping it all together. A big thanks too to our board vice captain Stuart Braine, as Brainey said after the Interclub, “no one remembers who won they just remember the funny stuff”. Brainey summed it up well, it’s all about having fun, and that is exactly what the board section is. I can’t wait for next season as I feel things are in place for a great year ahead. Michael Banister “Bano” - Board Captain

SURF BOAT SECTION REPORTWell, the season ended with a whimper rather than a bang............a cancelled and rescheduled State Titles saw our veterans and juniors unable to compete on the new dates. Circumstances conspired to make season 2020-21 a tough one - It was a season that never felt like it got properly underway. But all is not lost. Many experienced rowers will return to the competition arena in 2021/22 and we have introduced a new cohort of boys, girls, men and women to the wonderful sport of surf boat rowing. I am very impressed with the quality people I have met and we can look forward to some fun this coming year.Further, whilst evergreen Garry Allman was sidelined with injury, Ryan Woods continued his development into a fine surf sweep and achieved full qualification. Steve Tatham has returned and will add to our sweep stocks as well as knowledge and experience assisting with the development of our training programmes. A big shout out to Era Dave and Ivan that answered our calls for help, then later Nic M. Thank you to Dave H, Nick H and Bronwyn for your input and putting up with my requests for help. We owe an enormous thank you to Rodd Sanchez for qualifying a bronze squad - no mean feat with no facilities or equipment. A big personal sacrifice that we are all indebted to you for - and your wonderful assistants, David and of course the tireless Annalyse. Thank you all. Finally - thank you to the other section leaders, Chris Barber and the C&C Committee members for the encouragement and support you have afforded me and the new rowers. Cronulla has a wonderful history to build upon and with the current crop of leaders and the culture being nurtured I am confident you are taking us to a fantastic future! We have some excellent leaders in the section, and I am genuinely excited about the years ahead and looking forward to rowing with you all.  I have had a most enjoyable year and I thank all of you for making me feel welcome and reminding me of how much I love this sport.

Section members commence pre-season in July and we are on track to put some very good crews in the water. Training with Mark Redrup on the track and in the gym has started in earnest and we will be in the water in no time. Everyone is very excited about our new club and reigniting that fighting Cronulla spirit.See you on the beach - and in our new clubhouse!Pat Bourke - Surf Boat Captain

MASTERS SECTION REPORT What a crazy 20/21 season it has been for our Cronulla Masters Group, with the virus, social gathering restrictions and no clubhouse facilities, It certainly was a challenging year to take on the Masters Captain role. However, with all the challenges came an increased camaraderie and commitment from all within the master’s group, especially from our ladies, whose numbers increased considerably throughout the season, with many of them entering competition for the first time this season, all achieving great results at State and Aussies. The weekly training sessions were well attended throughout the season, with many adding additional sessions to increase their skill levels, which I believe contributed greatly to the outstanding competition results. Chrispie’s Thursday morning sessions were a great example of this. The acquiring of a few second hand race boards for master’s use also yielded great results in getting some masters off the yellow rescue boards and onto proper race boards, with many taking the plunge to purchase their own race boards this season. A big thank you must go out to all the stalwarts of the master’s group in providing training tips, guidance etc for the new members and encouraging them to compete. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and although I was extremely keen to continue as the Master’s Captain, I believe only the surface was scratched on what was achievable, work commitments have necessitated that I will be commuting between Sydney and Brisbane on a regular basis, making it impossible to be an effective Master’s Captain. Bronessa Smith has put up her hand to take over the reins, with all her many years in the club in various roles, including her popularity and work ethic, I believe she will do an excellent job in continuing to build the Masters Group. I request all members to provide Bronny the same support afforded to me and wish her all the best.

Please may I take this opportunity to thank all of you for accepting me into the master’s fold and allowing me the privilege of being the Master’s Captain for the season, it certainly has been a humbling experience, training and competing with such an awesome bunch. A final thank you must go to my Vice Captain Daryn Metti for all the guidance and assistance, it is certainly appreciated. Finally, a great end of the season function was held at Il Gusto’s Italian Restaurant and although the master’s group were all winners this season, a few were handed “Ball Tamperer” prizes and awards for some outstanding achievements. All the best and can’t wait to start the new season with all of you, under the guidance of our new “Captain Bronny”. Barry Gove - (Ball Tamperer)

BEACH SECTION REPORTAfter a disappointing end to the 2019/20 season, which ultimately saw the cancellation of the Aussies due to COVID-19, the Cronulla beach competitors turned up for the 2020/21 season full of energy and determination, excited at the prospect of a full, uninterrupted season. Once again, Cronulla saw a number of excellent results from a number of athletes across each carnival throughout the season.Throughout October, November and into early December 2020, Cronulla competitors Nathan Breen, Bellah Walker, Ace Haslam, Sasha Popovic, Max Geronimo and Josh Tattam were selected to compete in the inaugural 3-Round Envirobank NSW Super Teams Series, which served as a curtain raiser to the Nutri-Grain series. There were some fantastic results throughout the series, with Round 1 culminating in Nathan Breen taking home the bronze medal in the Open Male 2km Beach Run, Ace Haslam achieving second place in the Open Male Beach Sprint and Sasha Popovic also taking home the silver medal in the Open Male Beach Flags. Round 3 saw Bellah Walker take home the bronze medal in the Open Female Beach Sprint event and Nathan Breen, again performing well, secured fourth place in the Open Male 2km Beach Run.

The annual Sydney Branch Titles were held at Maroubra Beach on the weekend of the 6th of February and again Cronulla saw some impressive individual and team results. This carnival served as the first chance for many competitors to dust off the cobwebs and get back into the competitive frame of mind, ready for the season ahead. The U17’s Male Beach Sprint saw Cronulla dominate some of the major positions, with Ace Haslam again taking out the gold medal and Max Geronimo claiming 3rd, Josh Tattam 4th and Sasha Popovic 6th. It was therefore no surprise that the U17 Male Beach Relay, consisting of the aforementioned young men, comprehensively secured another gold medal. The U17 Male Beach Flags also saw Cronulla perform extremely well, with Josh Tattam taking home the gold medal from Sasha Popovic and Max Geronimo rounding out the podium in 3rd. In the Open Male Beach Sprint Ace Haslam again was the star of the show, taking out the gold medal and also spearheading both the U17 and Open Male Beach relay teams to victory. Our women also had some encouraging results, with Lauren Hocking securing 4th place in the U19 Female Beach Sprint, closely followed by Tia and Danielle in 5th and 6th respectively. Lizzy Rigg also put forth a strong performance in the Open Female Beach Sprint, taking 6th place in a very competitive field. These four women then combined to take home a respectable 4th place in the Open Female Beach Relay. After unfortunately being cancelled earlier on in the year, Wanda Surf Life Saving Club hosted the Wanda One Carnival in late February, which coincided with Round 2 of the Summer of Surf. Again, Cronulla saw some terrific results, in particular Ace Haslam, who took out the Marc Leabeater Cup for winning the Open Male Beach Sprint in a hot field and also Josh Tattam, who claimed 1st place in the U17 Male Beach Flags. The focus was then turned to the NSW State Surf Life Saving Championships in early March. Cronulla again performed extremely well, with a significant medal count accumulated. Bellah Walker in the U19 Female Beach Sprint, Josh Tattam in the U17 Male Beach Flags, the U17 Male Beach Relay, the U19 Mixed Beach Relay and the Open Female Beach Relay took out impressive gold medals, while Ace Haslam in the U17 Male Beach Sprint, the U19 Female Beach Relay, the Open Mixed Beach Relay and the team of Henry Cunningham and Nathan Breen all managed to secure 2nd place. Nathan Breen backed up superbly to take Bronze in the Open Male 2km Beach Run, with Bellah Walker in the Open Sprint and the Open Male Beach Relay also claiming a bronze medal. The Interclub Carnival held in late March was the penultimate competitive hit out before the Aussies, just under a month away. This carnival again saw the U17 Male Beach Relay team take out the gold medal to continue their unbeaten run at carnivals throughout the 2020/21 season. The Open Male Beach Relay Teams A and B secured 2nd and 3rd place respectively, while the Open Female Beach Relay Team also performed well.

The 2020/21 season culminated in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, with the beach events taking part at Mooloolaba Beach. As with the rest of the carnivals leading up to the Aussies, Cronulla performed exceptionally well across the week. Cronulla’s first appearance came in the Open Male 2km Beach Run, where Nathan Breen took out the Bronze medal closely followed by Jack Robertson in 4th place. These two would likely make a handy 2 x 1km Beach Relay… That same afternoon our very own Mr and Mrs Reliable, Ace Haslam and Bellah Walker took out gold medals in the U17 Male Beach Sprint and U19 Female Beach Sprint respectively. This was only the beginning for these two, who would go on to dominate the week. A tactical masterstroke in combination with exceptional distance beach running saw the super-duo of Nathan Breen and Jack Robertson claim the gold medal in the 2 x 1km Beach Relay in a red hot field. The gold medals didn’t stop there however, with the U19 Mixed Beach Relay and the U17 Male Beach Relay each claiming the top prize in their respective races. Incredibly for the U17 Male Beach Relay team, this win saw them go undefeated as a relay team for the entire season, which speaks volumes of their training attitude, natural ability and arguably more exciting, their potential, as

they progress into the U19 and Open age groups. The following day would again see a number of our athletes produce some amazing results. In an extremely close final two, Josh Tattam would be only just beaten to the final flag in the U17 Male Beach Flags to claim an exceptional silver medal, with his Cronulla teammates Ace Haslam, 3rd, and Sasha Popovic, 6th, also fighting deep into the finals. As she so often does, it would be Bellah Walker claiming another gold medal, this time in the U19 Female Beach Flags, making that gold number 6 for Cronulla and capping off an unforgettable Aussies carnival. The 2020/21 season was another successfully competitive season for the Cronulla Beachies, with a number of impressive results achieved across each of the carnivals. All competitors should be extremely proud of their efforts, but also aim to improve for a big 2021/22 ahead. A big thanks should also go out to the coaching staff of Mark Redrup and Paul Littlejohn. Their tireless efforts to make each athlete as prepared as possible to succeed is greatly appreciated and should not go unrecognised.Josh Maile - Beach Captain

SWIM SECTION REPORTIt was again a pleasure to captain the talented Cronulla SLSC swim team. We saw the hard work pay off to give many great results this season, and also experienced the ups and downs that surf racing often brings. Well done to all of our swimmers for your determination and commitment to racing and especially for the great team spirit you have all shown. As part of our swim team, we have many of our athletes who also back up and compete in the Iron-person and/or the board rescue at the major carnivals. This year, I will also include these outstanding results below. Our first carnival of the season, after some delays due to the long-lasting COVID19 restrictions, was the Manly Open Carnival. Our best individual performance was from Will Banister who placed an amazing 6th in the U19 Surf Race in a first-class field. Well done, Will! The Sydney Branch Carnival this season ended up being moved from Maroubra to Yarra Bay with a modified program of only swim and ironman events (no belts, rescue tube rescue, or board rescue). There weren’t too many complaints from our team, as we were all just happy that a competition could proceed! Special mention goes to our placegetters; Zoe Duchet-Catherine, Jay Furniss, and the Open Surf Teams. Well done also to all finalists on their excellent results:

At the NSW State Championships, our swimmers did extremely well against some tough competition. A very special moment at these championships was seeing the board rescue board, which was kindly donated by our dedicated club member Neil Swane, taking out a Bronze Medal in the Open Mens Board Rescue event. We look forward to more great results on Neil’s board in the years to come. Congratulations to the following NSW State Championship placegetters and finalists:

After the season of really not knowing whether Aussies would go ahead or not, we finally packed our bags and arrived on the Sunshine Coast. The energy, excitement, and motivation seen in our team on the beach was outstanding. The highlight was seeing Jay Furniss race an amazing race in the Open Ironman only just missing out on a medal and finishing an incredible 4th place! Well done Jay, you did Cronulla proud. We have certainly seen so many improvements in our swimmers this year and I look forward to seeing each and every athlete build upon their skills and see further improvements next season. We will have the new Clubhouse to move into and train in, and this will no doubt build our team camaraderie even more. You have all done yourselves and the Club proud this season and I look forward to seeing you all on the beach.Ryan Hartup - Swim Captain

SKI SECTION REPORTSo yet another season passes where hurdle after hurdle is erected in our path and like the team we are, we just keep on jumping. What has been more obvious than ever from the season just gone is that we are not a Club to give in easily. There were more than a few personal bests recorded through this year. Maybe most of these slipped under the radar as they didn’t result in a podium finish but to those of us keeping an eye on things and taking notes, I for one could not have been more proud of the efforts put in.Without leaders, role models, motivators and those you just want to be like, a Club will struggle to grow and progress as a competitive squad. Luckily Cronulla has such a group in its senior ranks. Whether or not they even realise it, our seniors are inspiring the rest of the Club to give their very best every time they walk onto the beach. The commitment shown by all members in Cronulla has definitely been given a shot in the arm irrespective of the task at hand. It’s often thought that the strength of a club is determined on the senior competitors and the results they achieve only. While our senior teams did perform brilliantly throughout the season, it is also important to recognise the efforts of those around them. The last few years has shown a new strength in the ladies and gents making up our Masters competitors. With training sessions for all disciplines programmed regularly through each week and all of which being well attended, it’s not hard to believe how they consistently get the results they do. Some may say it’s only the social side of these sessions that attract the numbers but I’ll say – “If it aint broke – don’t fix it”.To ensure our senior competitors have the back up to support them, it is important to have a strong junior squad biting at their ankles. While our younger competitors have really been trying to find their feet over recent years, I know we are about to see them shine. There is a lot to learn if you want to compete at the highest level in surf and our juniors have matured considerably in their training commitment, surf techniques and competitive skills. I know a few of them were back in the water and training by June preparing for next season, that’s commitment.

I would think for the first time in a long time, we now have a fourth squad in the water and training. Following an extensive school level recruitment drive there is a whole new group of young ski paddlers learning new skills and having a great old time doing it. Yes, there is the odd water fight or sing along with this group but without too much effort now a five kilometre ski paddle is as easy as 1,2,3. Lets hope this group grabs the attention of any of last years Under 14’s that are looking to have some fun. Finally, to a very special group that are the absolute driving force of everything that is competitive at Cronulla. They form the committee referred to as “The C&C” and to simply attend one of their meetings is inspirational in itself. Having a group giving their time and efforts so selflessly to the members of our great Club instantly reassures you that the right people are driving the Club truck. Thanks team.Michael Roye - Ski Captain

Congratulations to all winners who have competed consistently and courageously throughout this Season. Congratulations to all those younger members who decided to compete in our surf races this season when Nippers was cancelled or just to get some extra race training. We are always pleased to have the Nippers join us and we also had a few new members this season, some of whom just wandered off the beach to join our wonderful Club and have a Sunday race.Again we thank the Polar Bears for allowing us to use their room and liquor licence and also Cameron Hobhan and Mark Simpson for keeping the toilets open each Sunday in the Complex. Both 2018/19 and 2019/20 season annual reports I wrote – “This season was probably the biggest challenge we will ever face without a Club house but next Season will make it all worthwhile.”I will not say this any more as we WILL BE in our Club house next Season!Special thank you to all who helped by turning up on our “Sunday Fundays” with happy smiling faces.

OUR SPONSORS TREASURER’S REPORTI’m pleased to present the 2020/21 financial statements for Cronulla SLSC.This financial year the Club has achieved an overall financial statement surplus of $218,486, compared to an operating surplus of $1,049,698 in 2020/21. COVID-19 impacted our commercial revenue from tenants as we provided rental relief through COVID-19 lockdowns and periods of restricted trading. In addition, we were unable to earn any revenue from both Club and external functions and events as we were unable to reoccupy the Clubhouse. The double challenge of COVID-19 and being unable to reopen our clubhouse saw our revenue drop from $2,046,338 to $819,842. In addition, we did not receive any further building related grants this financial year (with the final $300,000 due once we achieve our Occupancy Certificate). This was offset by our Management Committee and our members reducing expenditure from $996,640 to $601,356. We gratefully appreciate the support from the Federal Government through their JobKeeper (COVID-19) response. On a brighter note, we were fortunate to be able to hold two of our major fundraiser’s - the Shark Island Swim and our Golf Day. I’d like to thank Kieran Day (Convenor, Shark Island Swim Committee), Ross Diver-Tuck (Convenor, Golf Day Committee) and their hard-working teams for very successful events, which generated $36,096 and $23,450 (including generous sponsorship from Pulse, Ace Gutters and D’Arte Group (SIS) and Ayers (Golf Day).In addition to our current Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsors, Ayers Group, Gibson Howlin Lawyers, 7 News, Ace Gutters, Baden J Green, Doran Financial Services, Letizza, Pulse, Elite Personal Training, Pinker Arnold McLoughlin Chartered Accountants, we are pleased to have Inten Constructions, Endeavour Fleet Management and Telstra Sylvania and SKY Coaching on board as new sponsors. We appreciate the ongoing support of bronze sponsors including: Brushworks, Cronulla Swim School, CVD, D’Arte Group, Infront, On The Go Plumbing and Roden Security. Thanks to John Zagame (Convenor, Finance and Sponsorship Committee) and support from Melissa Irwin (Marketing Communications & Sponsorship Officer). We also appreciate the ongoing support and funding from SLSA and SLSNSW.I’d also like to acknowledge the generous support of Baden Green and his team for the audit of our accounts and acting as our Honorary auditors. We greatly appreciate you providing this service pro bono. We reviewed our membership fees for the first time in 4 years. We want to ensure that that membership fees paid by members reflect the values of the Club and be a balance between ensuring the financial sustainability of the Club for the next generation of our members, an ability to contribute, equity and usage, contribution, loyalty and service to the movement. We completed a comparative analysis against the Bate Bay Clubs and also a select number of Clubs in

Sydney Branch to ensure we offer an attractive and competitive proposition. Even with the 2021/22 fee increases, which were endorsed by the Executive and Management Committees, we are the lowest fee Club in the Bate Bay for cadets, U19, active members and competitors based on standard fees. I’d also like to express my thanks to everyone who pays their membership fees on time – greatly appreciated! We ended the year with a strong cash balance of $523,698.71, which was underpinned by the extension of our building loan by $370,000. Normalised our cash balance would have been $153,698.71, against a prior season closing balance of $187,954. We extended the loan knowing that in order to reoccupy the Clubhouse we needed to complete remedial water pressure work with Sydney Water. This was not planned and was unbudgeted. These costs will be expensed in the first quarter of the 2021/22 season and will require us to continue to be financially disciplined in the years ahead as we progress paying down our building loan. The most substantive fixed asset expenditure throughout this and previous years has been on the building redevelopment. Expenditure on the building project in 2020/21 totalled $264,000. Remaining expenditure on this project will be focussed on closing out our new water connection to ensure that the fire protection measures meet our occupancy requirements. I would like to commend and thank the Commonwealth and State Governments and to Sutherland Shire Council, who collectively have committed $4.5m to this project – without this contribution, our building redevelopment would still be on the drawing board. The balance of this project (over $3m) has been funded directly by the club either through cash balances or borrowings. Thank you to the members for your continued commitment to this project and I greatly appreciate the support of our members (listed in the annual report) who gave generously or pledged funds to our Building  Tomorrow’s Future campaign this

year ($87,620). In total, we have raised $196,200 in donations and outstanding pledges. In such challenging times, every dollar has made a difference. We will recognise all building fund donors over $500 on our our donor wall inside the Clubhouse, including the generous funding and support from various levels of Government. Of course, we also are running a final building appeal until 31 August 2021 and it is not too late to donate or pledge your support and to have your name or business recognised on our donor wall before the Club reopens. Our endorsed budget for the 2021/22 season sees us making a cash loss and cash flow will be extremely tight if we continue to experience COVID-19 lockdowns and flow on impacts to our members, sponsors and the broader economy. Your support for continued financial discipline to help us manage the challenges and tight cash flow is appreciated.

A special thank you to Jenny, Robyn and Kathy in the Administration team who provide great support to all of us and ensure we have appropriate financial governance in place. With Kathy’s retirement, we warmly welcome Sandra Marshall and Kaila Bergen to the Administration team and I look forward to working with you both. Big thanks also to the Executive and Management Committee’s for your support. Finally, I’m excited that we will be back in the Clubhouse in the 2021/22 season and to be able to provide services to our members and the community from our “home”. See you at our Club very soon!Audited reports as a separate document.Suzanne Storrie - Treasurer

REGISTRAR’S REPORT On behalf of the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club I welcome all new members, whether you patrolled and/or competed, assisted with the Nippers, took a position on the management committee or simply supported the club through this most challenging time. The extenuating circumstances that have prevailed over the past three and a half years, with the club redevelopment and the Covid crisis, are circumstances that no one could have ever envisaged and they have caused much disruption to normal club functioning and activities. Our membership numbers across most categories, on average, have remained steady. However, I am concerned at the drop in numbers in what I would consider potentially to be our most valuable group in terms of competition and patrols, the Cadets 13-15 years. Our ‘Transfers Out’ throughout the season did not reflect the thirty five percent disparity in numbers when compared to last years figures, so perhaps it could be that those members may have chosen to leave the movement in order hopefully, to participate in other activities. Clearly this is an area of membership that we need to address as in my view, this is an extremely important category and vital for the future of the club.If the failure to retain memberships was at all attributed to the lack of facilities at the club then hopefully this will all be rectified with the opening of the new club, with facilities that arguably, will be second to none in Sydney Branch.Associate membership increased over the years and no doubt this can be attributed to the exceptional position of the building on the Esplanade and access to its facilities within, once operational. The increase in our General membership remains ‘en trend’ from the past season and again can be attributed to the extensive recruitment drive by our Junior Activities Group, having Nipper parents joining as General Members and encouraging them to take on roles such as Age Group Managers, Water Safety and the like.

This season we give recognition to and congratulate those members who qualified for Association Long Service awards:Fifty Year members: Ken Eldridge and Greg Hewett.Twenty-Five Year awardees: Tony Appleyard, Brandi Cole (nee Elliott) and Brad Hughes. All members, especially patrolling members, are encouraged to check that their membership category accurately reflects the awards that they hold and the activities that they are engaged in within the Club, especially in relation to the qualification of the Award, Long Service and Reserve Active categories. A more detailed list of the club and individual membership categories appear at the rear of this annual report. Finally, I would sincerely like to thank our office administrator Jenny Pinker, who in my view has, throughout the past forty months that the physical club has not existed, been the one constant that has held so much of the operation together. Outside of the office, Jenny volunteers much of her own time assisting the various sub committee’s, Golf Day, Presentation Night, 200 Club and of course the AGM, all due to her dedication, understanding and passion for the club. Thank you Jenny. After 4 years as the Honorary Registrar, I have decided it is time that I step down and allow another to take the job on. I would suggest that it would be a fine opportunity for perhaps one of our new mentees to step up to the challenge and enjoy the administrative activities and challenges that the club has to offer. In conclusion, I would like to wish you all a rewarding and successful 2021/22 season in whatever it is that you choose to be your contribution to this wonderful club and look forward to the opening, finally, of our new clubhouse. Cheers. Paul Larssen - Registrar
