I. Background & Introduction
The UCLA Alumni Association has gathered information on three UCLA classes: 1991, 1992,and most recently, 1994. A 1993 survey was not conducted.
In January 1995 1,500 surveys were mailed to a random selection of alumni graduating fromUCLA in June 1994. Of those mailed, 440 (29%) alumni responded prior to the deadlineindicated in the survey's introduction letter, an increase from 381 respondents from the Classof 1991 and 312 respondents from the Class of 1992. A copy of the survey instrument isincluded with this report.
The responses to the survey are included with this report in a table titled "Alumni Survey onthe UCLA Experience/Comparisons between 1994, 1992, and 1991 Raw Data Results."Some of the more interesting shifts in opinions are highlighted in the "Notable Findings"section as well as in chart form.
II. The 1994 Graduate
More than half of the respondents were female (54%). The self-reported GPA remainedsimilar to previous classes' studied (3.3 vs. 3.2 in both '91 and '92). More than a quarter(26%) said that English is not their first language.
Most of the respondents graduated with a social science degree (43.7%). They declared theirmajors in their third year of school (47.1%), seriously considering only one (33.6%) or no(29.7%) other major. A third of the respondents transferred to UCLA from another collegeor university, namely a California community college. A significant percentage, 43%,considered themselves a commuter student, traveling an average of 18 miles each way tocampus.
JMSmith (gAgroups\sar\jsm \recgrad\94 \94report.fin)13Mar96
The 1994 survey drew an increase of responses from alumni with humanities, engineering, andlife sciences degrees, but a decrease of responses from those graduating with social sciencesand arts degrees. The percentage of transfer students transferring from a Californiacommunity college significantly increased.
Overall, they rated their UCLA experience good (42.5%) or excellent (46.1%), in keepingwith results from previous surveys. Most also reported fond memories of their UCLAexperiences (33.6% somewhat agreed; 59% strongly agreed).
Similarly, respondents rated their education good (44.3%) or excellent (44.5%). They ratedtheir interaction with professors slightly better than previous respondents, with 29.6% sayingthat their interaction was good, 13.4% citing it excellent. Academic involvement hasincreased slightly, while non-academic participation remained the same. More alumni saidthat their overall satisfaction was related to their major. The number of alumni agreeing thatresearch is more important than teaching to most UCLA professors continued to slightlydecrease since 1991.
More would choose to re-enroll to UCLA than in previous years. Similarly, more wouldrecommend UCLA to a friend or sibling. While on the average, alumni interest in continuingtheir UCLA involvement remained the same, their likelihood of giving money to UCLAincreased.
III. Notable Findings
GeneralMore than a third of the respondents were accepted to UC Berkeley but chose to attend
UCLA instead. (Chart 1)Location and being close to one's family were cited as the number one reason for choosing
to attend UCLA. (Chart 2)The average student loan owed increased by 53.4% in 1994. (Chart 3)
Career Development and EmploymentAlumni view their academic preparation for their careers as the weakest component of their
educational experience. (Chart 4)More 1994 graduates have jobs than those graduating in 1992. (Chart 5)The income levels of 1994 graduates are higher than those graduating in 1992. (Chart 6)More 1994 graduates entered management-level positions compared to the majority of
1992 alumni entering office support/clerical positions. (Chart 7)Overall, career services ratings improved since last surveyed in 1992. (Chart 8)More than any other career service offered, alumni wished they had used the Career
Network alumni contact program more when they were students. (Chart 9)
JMSmith (g:\ groups\ sar \jsm\recgrad\94\94report.fin)13Mar96
Graduate & Professional ProgramsThe percentage of those enrolled in or interested in graduate or professional programs has
steadily declined. More respondents said that they are not really interested in going tograduate school. (Chart 10)
While more than half of those going to graduate school applied to UCLA, only about a fifth .are currently attending UCLA. (Chart 11)
Student ActivitiesWhile participation in Greek activities steadily declined, involvement with other interests,
including academic-related, increased. (Chart 12)More than 40% of the respondents said that they drank alcohol at least once a week while
students at UCLA. (Chart 13)Almost a third of the respondents said they didn't give to the senior class gift because they
weren't aware that such an opportunity existed. (Chart 14)Overall, participation in commencement activities increased (including joining the UCLA
Alumni Association). (Chart 15)
Overall ImpressionsAlumni ranked many aspects of their student experience good or excellent, including the
quality of instruction received at UCLA. (Chart 16)Alumni characterized many aspects of their student experience very positively, the majority
of them recommending UCLA to friends or siblings and choosing to re-enroll in UCLA again.(Chart 17)
The number one cited item most needing improvement at UCLA was the way that studentsare treated ("bureaucracy", "red tape"). The percentage of respondents citing "lack ofcommunity and belonging" significantly increased as well. (Chart 18).. Respondents urged prospective students to get involved with the campus and to ventureout. (Chart 19)
Access to computer technology increased after graduation. (Chart 20)
