Programs were reviewedby one to three reviewers. Curriculum areas covered by the softwarereviews are computer literacy, ESL, language arts, life skills,mathematics, reading, science, and social studies. FOREWORD

The Massachusetts Department of Education, Bureau ofStudent, Community, ard Adult Services has, over a three yearperiod beginning in 1983, undertaken a series of projectsthat had as a go,' he integration of computers in thelearning process at lit education centers throughout thestate. As in other educational sectors, such integrationcalled for resource and information gathering, hardware andsoftware requisition, staff training, development of imple-mentation strategies, and follow-up procedures.

The initial task of the adult educators involved in theproject was to explore the potential for computer use withtneir special populations. State-funded mini-grants suppliedhardware and software to centers whose personnel wereselected as potential participants in training programs.Through the joint efforts of the Massachusetts StateDepartment of Education and the Merrimack Education Center inChelmsford, Massachusetts, a series of five-day softwareapplications institutes were organized. Three suchinstitutes provided intensive training for approximatelyfifty adult educators statewide. Early efforts explored avariety of promising computer applications practiced inpublic school systems. The nique perspective of theinstitute experience attempted to distill out thoseapplications appropriate for adult learners in ABE, GED, andESL programs.

Criteria for software selection were carefully developedin areas of technical and instructional characteristics withadditional emphasis on propriety of content for the adultlearner. A software evaluation form was devised through anarduous group effort. This special form, displayed on thepage following this one, has been met with widespreadapproval by adult educators throughout New England. Its usefor purposes of disseminating information has been g ierallylimited to training participants who have been sensit.zed tocriteria for selecting promising software. This info, allycertified group has become known as the Massachusetts AdultSoftware Specialists (M.A.S.S.) and their efforts atevaluating software provide the substance for this resource.As two or more evaluations on single software items weresubmitted, a summary form was utilized to combine the generalresults of those evaluations, and these -um-,lary formscomprise the body of this publi2ation.

The summary forms are simple and clear and could bequite useful to any adult educator who wishes tc efficientlyexplore a number of reviews on potentially useful softwareproducts. However, as with any evaluative resource, a set ofwarnings should be carefully noted. Tt must be emphasizedthat the information contained in the evaluation has a degreeof subjectivity that should be considered. Also evaluationsare submitted with a specific target population in mind andshould be examined in light of this perspective. Finally,the evaluations reflect a conglomerate of individualexperiences and should not in any case be viewed as either agroup endorsement or condemnation of any given product. Thatis, the content of the review forms is not intended toreflect the opinion of the Merrimack Education Center nor anybranch of the State Department of Education as to the qualityof the products reviewed.

This resource is offered as a gl....de to adult educatorsand its greatest utility may be in suggesting which softwaremight be looked at more closely for fulfilling a specificneed. To eliminate a product from potential use based uponthis resource would be contrary to the intention of theresource staff. The M.A.S.S. group has expanded andcontinues to produce additional software evaluationc:.Accordingly, this resource is expected to grow, providingadditional insight on products described within as well as onadditional items that may address the needs of adultlearners.
