ABSTRACTThis handbook, which is intended for K-12 teachers in
Colorado, explains how to integrate academic content standards andassessments with workplace competencies and schooi-to-career activities. Thehandbook is divided into four sections. The first presents the ColoradoGeneral Workplace Competencies, which describe the skills and knowledgestudents need to be successful in most careers and in college. Thecompetencies are organized into five categories: communication; organization;thinking; technology; and worker qualities. The second section, titled"Opportunities for Success," offers guidelines for educators as they helpspecial populations of students meet academic content standards andparticipate in school-to-career opportunities. Section 3 features gridsproviding examples of how the Colorado General Workplace Competenciescross-reference with the Colorado Model Content Standards for mathematics ingrades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Each grid is followed by examples of classroomstrategies combining a specific academic content standard, career developmentactivity, general workplace competency, and assessment strategy. Quotationsincluded throughout the handbook provide the perspectives of Coloradoeducators, business leaders, and students on integrating workplacecompetencies and academic content standards. A sample rubric constitutes thefourth section. Concluding the handbook are the addresses of Colorado's sixschool-to-career regional resource centers. (MN)
