P astor Mueller has felt led to accept the call he received from Hope Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington. He will con- tinue to serve here at St. Paul’s through June. That means he and Patra will be here to help with VBS and in many other ways. They are both gifted Christians who serve the Lord with passion. We will certainly miss them but know that our Lord has need of them up in Seattle. We will be having a good-bye event for them in late June. Final details are not yet available. Our web page and bulletins always have updated information. Pastor Manning from Searchlight church and I will cover the bulk of preaching duties in the months ahead. Our preaching schedule is set through August. Our Board of Elders is discussing how we want to address our pastor vacancy. We will keep updates on this matter on our web site also. At our church council meeting on May 17 we decided to move forward with phase one of our new event center. We have over $550,000 in the bank designated for this project and at least another $100,000 of promised gifts anticipated in the next few months. Phase one includes building the pad—that is soil preparation—install- ing underground utilities—and pouring the concrete slab or floor. Rough estimates are that this will cost approximately $500,000. If we had a total of $1,000,000 available the contractor could continue with putting up the walls-framing—roof, doors, etc. Pray that our Lord will enable us to receive another $400,000 over the summer so that we can keep this project moving forward. The event center will be a wonderful tool for both school and church ministry. Thanks goes out to all of you who have been giving toward this project. As we work together, our Lord enables us to do amazing things. Another major item on our agenda at our May 17 council meeting was the new budget for July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. I am so thankful for all the skilled people we have who worked hard to pull all the numbers together. I am so thankful for all the people who support our ministry with their offerings. I am so thankful for all the people who have entrusted their children to us through our school system. The bottom line is that we strive to match income with outgo. While our offerings haven’t been what we hoped, they are higher than the previous year. While our school enrollment is down, with reduction in staff our schools achieved their finan- cial goals. Our congregation is in a stable financial position. PRAISE THE LORD! At our quarterly voters meeting on June 6, our voters will be asked to approve the new budget. By the way, we know that most people enroll in our school due to word of mouth testimony. Advertising brings minimal results. Please speak up about our amazing school ministry. Be sure to read the thank you letter from Jaime Nava. When a young man graduates from seminary and gets his first call there is reason for rejoicing just as when one of our young people graduates from one of our Concordias and is ready for his or her first call. St. Paul’s supports our members who are pursuing a church worker carreer. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Five years ago a bright eyed bushy tailed young man came from your church in California to St. Louis because he felt called by Christ to declare the Gospel. After two years of classes, one year overseas, another in northern California, and a final one in St. Louis this same young man has come full circle. I am proud to say that I have received a call from Good Shepherd in Yucaipa, California. I am amazed at how God works in the calling process. The amaz-ing thing; my wife was born and raised in the very same city that I received my first call from. In fact, the president of our board of directors graduated from the same high school as she.

Kelly and I have been blessed by your long arms – the same arms that reached across the United States to

share your gifts, your prayers, and your love. I have seen the love of Christ in you. I have witnessed what Christ can do; to take total strangers and bring them together as family. What an example of the love of Christ lived out in His body. For this and all that you have done I praise Christ. I thank Him for you. I thank Him for what He does through you.

What else can I do to say thank you than to use those things I learned here at Concordia Seminary and put them into action where God has called me. I look forward to serving with love and with compassion. Christ has so much to offer in His gifts of grace and forgive-ness. Now I have been called to share those gifts. You helped make that pos-sible. Thank you.

Jaime & Kelly Nava

LETTER FROM JAIME NAVABack in December of 2010 we received a request from Pastor Robert McAmis in the Philippines, requesting any used hymnals we might have to be used in the various Lutheran congrega-tions and mission stations over there. Fortunately we had saved many of our old blue hymnals which we packed up & shipped to them. In March Jack Mihr received the following email:

“What good news you bring for our Mindanao congregations of the Lutheran Church in the Philippines. I will let you know when the hymnals arrive. It usu-ally takes two to three months, sometime between Easter and Pentecost. I will then distribute them to our congregations here in Northern Mindanao. They are now using the old Lutheran hymnal which are in poor condition. The liturgy in these

congregations is in English. The Scripture readings in the local Cebuano Visayan language. The sermon is in English and Cebuano. You would feel at home here. Salamat! (Thanks in Cebuano) to you and all our fellow Lutherans who made this shipment of hymnals possible. A blessed Lenten Season to the members of St. Paul’s, Orange.”

Pastor Robert McAmis

The hymnals have arrived and are now serving God’s people in a new country after serving St. Paul’s for over 20 years. St. Paul’s continues to reach out in many ways in locations throughout the world. Anybody want to visit some of these places with Pastor Martin: South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine, Turkey, Philippines? You will be truly blessed by the experience.

SERVING OTHERS IN JESUS’ NAMEWhen we become a Christian, God gives us salvation and the hope of eternity in heaven. He also gives us purpose and significance in our lives. He has given each of us the opportunity to serve others and make a real difference in our community. When you serve others in Jesus’ name, you’re ministering. God didn’t design ministry for just a few peo-ple. Here at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, we believe that every member of our church is a minister.

Our Pastors teach that we all are shaped by God with individual gifts and talents that are to be used to support the Body of Christ. The Ministry Team has designed several tools to help guide you in discover-ing how your spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences (SHAPE) in life can be used by God to mold you for service.

You can discover your SHAPE through our 301 adult discipleship class or you can contact Carolyn Perich, St. Paul’s Selfless Service Coordinator, at [email protected] to set up a private appointment.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

THANKS ST. PAUL’SDID YOU KNOW …

Children at St. Paul’s can be good stewards by serving and helping out at church. When they help others they are following the word of God. In fact, children of all ages can help out at church by engaging in the fol-lowing basic activities.

Children can help keep the church and its grounds clean by pick-ing up trash. They can help set up tables and chairs for Sunday school or other events as well as assist in putting them away. They can be helpful by being welcom-ing and kind to others by extend-ing a smile or just saying “hello” to others. Children can help other children who may be frightened, sad, or shy by asking them to play or sit next to them during Sunday school. Children can help by being respectful and quiet when their Pastor or Sunday school teacher is speaking or giving a lesson. Lastly, children of all ages can help the church by tithing.

Younger children can continue to help out the church by making cards for shut-ins. A list can be requested at the front office. They can also help by bringing in their recycling for the “Living Water” pro-gram. Funds raised from this pro-gram are being used to help build water wells in other countries.

Older children can help by vol-unteering their time and serve others with community services. They can volunteer for one week in June to assist in Vacation Bible School. They can volunteer in the Christian Cupboard and help organize and collect food. In addi-tion, older children can also help by volunteering to serve meals to the hungry and homeless at First Lutheran in Fullerton.

Please contact the Youth and Children’s Minister for additional ideas or information on the sug-gested ideas.
