“Collections” Textbook

• The first unit contains the theme “Chasing Success.”

• One key idea that the readings will illustrate is that success, although sweet, sometimes requires great sacrifice.

1st Reading “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol Dweck (p21)

• Writers will frequently set-up an argument by first using language and style that communicates their intention.

1st Reading “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol Dweck (p21)

• Writers will also show their claim by using oppositional words and phrases (such as “however” “but” “on the other hand”) to illustrate a contrast.

Initial Thoughts on the Reading

* Dweck is illustrating a claim that our society believes that success relies mostly on innate or natural talent.

* She wishes to counter this notion and in-fact develop the idea that success relies more on a “growth” mindset.

Our Way of Working with the Text

1) We are going to divide the text into different sections.

2) Each group is going to cite textual evidence to support a central idea.

3) On Cornell Notes, you’re going to practice writing a proper citation.

Refresher on Citing Textual Evidence

1) We use MLA style (Modern Language Association) for citations in English. Page numbers are used in parentheses without the “p.” with all punctuation outside.

2) Every quote needs to have a signaling or “lead-in” phrase.

Example:

According to Dweck, society believes that “possessing superior intelligence or ability . . . Is a recipe for success” (21).

Refresher on Citing Textual Evidence

3) Citations (quotations) also need to have an explanatory frame. You must paraphrase and explain how the textual evidence functions.

Example:

Dweck argues that “an overemphasis on intellect or talent leaves people vulnerable to failure” (21). Praising talent alone, she says, risks giving children a false impression about the value of hard work and practice.

Divide and Conquer

1) Each group will get a section of the rest of the essay.

2) Read the section (5-7 minutes) silently.3) Take 5 minutes to work on highlighting a central idea with textual evidence. Do this in CN.

Closing - Summary

1) Writers use simple words and simple sentences when they are trying to make their argument as clear as possible.

2) Also, writers frequently set up their argument by offering a counter-point to prevailing wisdom. Oppositional words are used to indicate an argument.
