    Textbooks?

    Do Your Schools Use a

    McGraw Hill World

    Geography Textbook?

What is the Primary Publisher of the Schools' Textbooks or

the Primary Source (Online or Otherwise) for the

Curriculum?Brighton Central School District Both No No There isn't a primary publisher for the district. For example, the

three textbooks they have for 9th and 10th grade social studies are

from Prentice Hall, Houghton Mifflin, and McDougal Littell. They

do have a textbook review and recommendation process for

purchasing and using new textbooks. The process takes into

consideration the following criteria: content, readability,

sequential development K-12, authors, fairness and objectivity,

appearance, timeliness, peripheral support, physical condition,

field testing reaction, and cost considerations.

    information within the classroom.

Yes Yes, they just received the

    2014 addition this summer.

    They introduced this edition

to the students at the start of

    this school year.

In addition to the above, HF-L's High School's Social Studies

Department Leader, Mike Merrill, has shared that he is aware of

the controversy and has read an article relating to it. He sees this

situation as a great teachable moment for his students. An

integral part of the study of history is the analysis of evidence

within sources. (NYS Social Studies Practices: 3. Analyze evidence

in terms of content, authorship, point of view, bias, purpose,

format, and audience.) He felt this would be a great opportunity

to ask his students to reflect about the term used in this case and

discuss the power of word choice in shaping opinion.

Kendall Central School District Both Some, yes No response Some classes use McGraw-Hill textbooks. Kendall uses many

    other publishers textbooks, too.

  • Monroe 1 BOCES They use a variety of resources within

    their programs. The resources (literature,

    articles, online sources, text sets,

    documentaries, textbooks) used depend

on the grade level, content, course,

    program and student population.

Yes No No one source, textbook or publishing company is used for the

curriculum. Teachers develop curriculum maps utilizing the

Common Core State Standards in combination with knowledge of

how students learn best. They rely on a variety of resources and

don't limit students to one resource. They provide a variety of

resources with varying perspectives so that students can

formulate opinions based on more than one viewpoint. They use

resources from the following publishing companies (this list is not

all-encompassing): Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pro ED,

committee that includes parents and community members along

with teachers, school administrators, and instructional directors.
