Dear Community Members,

Our Community Education summer edition booklet provides the bittersweet opportunity to recognize the June retirement of Michael S. Field, who has led Community Education for more than a decade. Under Mike's leadership, this program has become one of the nation’s most robust, with numerous oppor-

tunities for meaningful personal enrichment and lifelong learning that annually attract 50,000 community members. Moreover, Community Education's Adult Education and Family Literacy programming, including the Read to Learn pro-gram and the Catherine M. Lee Women's and Children's Center, has empowered generations in our District.

Please join me in wishing Mike well, and in thanking him for the legacy he leaves of quality community programming. I also thank you for your support and par-ticipation through the years!

Community Education now is part of District 214's Community Engagement and Outreach Department, overseen by Director Patrick Mogge. The Department collectively will work to engage even more residents and offer even more diverse experiences for all.

District 214 is focused on ensuring every learner is prepared for future success, whether they are an adult seeking literacy skills, a child in our Women's and Children's program, a community member seeking out courses to enrich their life or one of our 12,000 high school students. We work hard to ensure a variety of programs, classes and opportunities for all our students.

At the high school level, this has translated into Redefining Ready!, a new re-search-based approach to determining college and career readiness. This exciting District initiative has been endorsed by national organizations, as well as by local villages and school districts nationally. We know our District 214 students are more than a test score.

We know they learn -- as we all do -- in different ways, and should be able todemonstrate readiness in a variety of ways. You can learn more in the District news pages of this booklet, or at www.redefiningready.org.

Thank you for being a part of our District!

We look forward to seeing you in our classrooms this summer and fall. I also look forward to seeing you on the Rolling Green Golf Course in support of the Foundation on September 12 (see page 5 for details)!Sincerely.

All D214 Schools

Achieve Top Rankings

(Again!)

the college program -- specific professional development and guaranteed student-teaching positions in District 214 or a partner elementary district, with the promise of a job interview if openings exist.

“We have a crisis in this country in terms of teacher recruitment,” Brown of Educators Rising said. “The eyes of the teaching profession are on this district.”

All six comprehensive high schools in High School District 214 have once again been ranked among the state’s best and most challenging by U.S. News & World Report and The Washington Post. Specifically, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, John Hersey, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling high schools were named among the top 45 in the state on U.S. News’ “Best High Schools” list, earning gold or silver medals -- a feat achieved by only 13 percent of schools. Removing magnet and charter schools, District 214’s are in the state’s top 35.

While both sets of rankings are focused on student success, they have very different selection criteria and consider graduation rate, college readiness and overall student performance. That all these schools earned top marks demonstrates that District 214 is consistently among the best in the state and nation, and is a point of pride.

Of course, these rankings tell only part of the story. Educators in District 214 work hard to ensure every student is prepared for success after high school. Through innovative coursework and numerous co-curricular and academic opportunities, our District ensures that the curriculum meets students where they are intellectually, socially and emotionally and helps them reach their potential.

State and national rankings underscore that vision, and remind us of the outstanding opportunities that await our students in a world we can’t yet imagine.

Linda Faust Instructor Linda is the owner of Scenter of the Mind, an all natural soap company based in Rolling Meadows, IL. She has always been a "do it yourselfer" and a huge

proponent of all things natural. She believes in living in harmony with nature and utilizing the many gifts the earth provides for our health and well being.

Before starting her business she experienced some of the ill effects from synthetic fragrance chemicals first hand which led her to investigate what other harmful chemicals people were being exposed to. Discovering the lack of testing

in the chemical and cosmetic industry and the improvement in her skin after using an all natural soap led her to start Scenter of the Mind and continuing to study the formulating of soap and other personal care products using safe,

Temple Structure and Priestly Function in Ancient Egypt Dr. MudloffNEW! An ancient Egyptian temple is not comparable to a modern house

of worship, where the general public can enter. Only priests and others in service to the god were allowed to enter the mysterious places. The pharaoh, as a god himself, was also able to enter the temple. Seemingly there was a basic plan but this could vary and often did. We plan to look at several structures from different periods of Egyptian history and compare the

changes in design over the centuries. Additionally we will examine the priestly functions associated with the changing times and beliefs. Structures and institutions that went along with the temple complex will also be addressed. Here is the foundations of what will later become the religious systems that we all are now familiar with in form, if not in kind! No previous knowledge is necessary. 4 Sessions $57 0594 Thu 10/20-11/10 7:00-8:30pm JH Rm 105 Dr 1

The Egyptian Mummy: Ritual, Myth and Magic Dr. MudloffNEW! More than simple curiosities, mummies are an important source of information on a variety of subjects regarding ancient Egypt. The mummy itself is only the end product of a long process that required approximately 70 days for completion and involved religious, magical and embalming practices and skill. Indeed, an entire industry was built upon the proper preparation and burial of the dead. The Egyptians possessed a strong belief in life after death and in the existence of distinct aspects of both the body and the soul. Central to the Egyptian’s belief was the preservation of the body as the eternal home of these aspects. Be with us for an in depth look at the perceived mysteries around these always fascinating objects. We will discuss the Ka, the Ba and all the other aspects that the ancients regarded as part of the make up of life after death. No previous knowledge needed. 4 Sessions $570595 Thu 9/22-10/13 7:00-8:30pm JH Rm 105 Dr 1

Phylis Prang, Quilter- Seamstress -InstructorI have been sewing and enjoying it as long as I can remember.

I made clothes for myself and my children plus curtains, drapes, blankets and more. Christmas was a big time we all had matching

P.J.s whether it was cowboys or airplanes. I had 3 sons at the time and, finally a girl and another boy to sew for came along. My

grandmother was a hand quilter and when she died I inherited all of her pieces of fabric from our clothing as children. I found a quilting class with a great instructor. I joined the class and from

then on I have been sewing and quilting for gift giving, fun and creativity. I became a teacher to pass on the joy, fun and creativity of sewing and quilting to

my students.
