Purpose: To improve system reliability through automation and Distribution Management System technologies

Key Goals:

1. Control and manage SAIDI, CAIDI, operational risk: cities,

important customers & sites, worst-performing feeders

2. Support operation of complex cities, remote sites,

specific customer requirements

3. Support inexperienced operational staff and

undermanned districts

SCADA – Challenges & Lessons Learned

Field retrofits are labour intensive!

‒ Difficult to spare for quick responses

‒ Inappropriate for new construction

• One is okay, ten is doable, a hundred is madness

‒ External cables are target for vandalism

‒ Working with manufacturer to get a kit design

Need field support to be successful

‒ Engage front-line workers as well as management early

‒ Engage affected engineering groups early: standards, asset management,

designers

Key Learnings & Opportunities

1. Involve the Cyber Security Office as soon as possible with new

technologies to ensure compliance with security standards (and to

mitigate risks).

2. 2.4 GHz is a very cluttered frequency

‒ this impacts range significantly

‒ choose your channel

3. Mesh network is designed to be used in small clusters

‒ More path options provides higher redundancy
