Many Turkish CEOs have their eyes firmly fixed onthe future. In addition, 58 percent of companiessaid they have not had trouble raising funds, despite the difficult times. This investment in thefuture will set them up to be competitive duringthe upturn.

This positivity is striking, and we are proud ofthese Turkish companies who continue to thrivedespite the downturn. Congratulations to thewinning companies on their exceptionalachievements for 2010. We hope to see themlead, innovate and excel even more in 2011.

Welcome to 2010 Deloitte Technology Fast50Turkey, the local appreciation of high growingtechnology companies and part of the globalcelebration of fast-growing technologycompanies. Most of the technology companies come fromİstanbul and this year the number of companiesfrom Ankara increased compared to previousyears. Fast50 companies are mainly in softwareand telecommunications/networking sub-sector.

Mindful of the current economic circumstances, this year’s survey focused on the impact of theglobal financial crisis. High growing technologycompany CEOs gave us their responses, letting usknow how they managed to achieve theirexplosive growth during this difficult period whilealso sharing insights into the opportunities, challenges and threats they see facing themselvesand the industry.

The survey results were very encouraging.Although the economic background has no doubthad an impact, many CEOs showed a high level ofconfidence in future growth. In total, 94 percentof Turkish respondents expected their targetmarkets to grow in 2010 and onwards, comparedto 6 percent who expected their markets todecline. Another positive indication wasrespondents’ attitude to targets: 87 percent ofCEOs have either kept their initial 2010sales targets or revised them upwards, indicatingthat many are achieving previously set goals.

Supporting R&D and technological innovationprojects of the private sector in Turkey since 1991,TTGV is a successful example that Turkeyindroduced in Europe; an innovative and dynamicintermediary mentioned in EU LisbonCommunique as an organization required to reachpublic R&D support to private sector. TTGVprovides long-term credit that is repaid by thecompanies and that requires cumpulsorycontribution of the companies to all costs incurredin the project. By this way, the public funds aredirected to R&D projects more effectively throughthe "multiplier effect" of the revolving fund.

In the fifth year of the program,it is encouragingto see that the number of technology companiesfrom Ankara doubled to 24%, yet İstanbulcontinues to produce the highest number of fastgrowing companies with a slight decrease of 12percent (72%). We have few companies fromKocaeli (2%) and İzmir (2%) too.

The number of companies which invest researchand development €1M-16M is graduallyincreasing from 5% to 26% to 36% in the lastthree years. This is an important sign that showstechnology companies gradually becoming morecommitted to innovation. In addition, we see thatthe number of companies which spent €100K-500K is increasing (almost 10% high) compared tolast year and the ones who spent €500K-1M isalso very slightly increased (almost 2% high)compared to last year. On the other hand thecompanies who spent 100K€ or less almost halvedthis year. So in general it is fair to say thatcompanies started to spend more on research anddevelopment.

Growth Rate Considering this year we calculated the growthrate between 2005 and 2009; 2009 being thecrisis year, it is not surprising to see that manycompanies’ growth rate yielded between 100-250% growth. Still, we have 24 percent of thecompanies in the program produced more than1000% growth rate which is amazing consideringcentury’s one of the big global economic crisis’effects.

While thenumber of technology companies with revenues€2M-5M are the same in 2010, the number oftechnology companies with revenues €5M-10M,and €10-30 million increased ( 2 percent and 8percent respectively) compared to last year. Deloitte Technology Fast50Turkey 2010 CEO SurveyAbout the Survey

The Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Turkey Programlists the 50 technology, media andtelecommunications companies headquartered inTurkey. These companies have achieved thehighest rates of revenue growth over the past fiveyears (2005 – 2009).

Every year since 2006, the Deloitte TMT industrygroup has simultaneously surveyed the DeloitteTechnology Fast 50 CEOs to discover the secrets totheir success, their hopes and fears for the sectorand other key leadership issues. This survey, whichwas undertaken in the third quarter of 2010, wascompleted by almost 76 percent of CEOs in our2010 Technology Fast 50 Turkey program. Itprovides insight into the issues that this selectionof leading CEOs expect will drive the industryforward in 2010 and beyond.

Introduction

This year, the impact of the global economicdownturn featured heavily in our survey. We askedrespondents how the downturn has affected theirmarkets, growth targets and sales cycles. We alsoquestioned whether the economic environmenthas made customers more or less willing to workwith fast-growing, emerging companies.

The survey then looked at how innovation, supplychain, capital markets, talent and the environmenthave been impacted by the economic downturn:How was Research & Development affected? Didcompanies have trouble raising funds? Arecustomers still concerned about environmentalissues?

The survey also looked at the positive aspects ofthe current economic environment, enquiringwhether companies have benefited in any wayand whether technology companies were relativelywell prepared for the downturn as a result of priorexperience.

The answers to all these questions are comparedwith EMEA and Asia Pacific results. We also wanted to see how Turkish CEOs’ambitions, perspectives on growth, challenges, and expectations changed in the last years.

Lead. Innovate. Excel - Technology Fast50 Turkey 2010

Page 56: Distil fast50 2010

1. Your company’s economic environment

Large majority of the respondents in Turkey andAsia Pacific are optimistic about the growthprospects of their target markets. 94% of therespondents in Turkey indicated that their marketwill show growth. On the other hand, therespondents in EMEA are more cautious ingrowth, only 45 percent of them expected somegrowth in their market. Of these, the largest groupwas also the most positive, with 81 percent ofTurkish respondents answering that their targetmarkets will grow in excess of 3 percent in 2010and 2011. However, this positive outlook is notshared by all respondents: almost one fourth ofthe surveyed companies in EMEA expect a declineby over 3%, significantly higher compared toTurkey & Asia Pacific.

How do you expect the economies across your main target markest willfare in 2010 - 2011?

2. Your growth strategy

Although 2009 was marked by large-scale panicand confusion about the health of the globaleconomy and the financial services sector, leadingmany companies in global to set pessimistictargets and budgets, Turkish CEOs show apromising attitude by revising their growth targetsup for 2010 and onwards while only 16 percent oftheir EMEA colleagues and 30 percent of theirAsia Pacific colleagues raised their targets up.However, a total of 36 percent of EMEA CEOs, 21percent of Asia Pacific and 13 percent of TurkishCEOs have revised their growth targets down, indicating tougher than expected marketconditions for those companies.

When asked whether the economic backdrop hascaused them to change their choice of growthlevers, Fast50 winner companies in Turkey andAsia Pacific are more focussed on organic growthcompared to EMEA. 77% of respondents in Turkeyreported that they are more focused on organicgrowth as a result of the economic backdrop. Thisis to be expected as most fast-growing companiesare focused on sales performance and operationalexecution. A much smaller proportion (11 percentin EMEA and Asia Pacific) responded that theywere more focused on acquisitions. However thisproportion is higher in Turkey (19%). This smallerproportion in EMEA and Asia Pacific indicates thatonly a minority of the market has the financialreserves and management ambition to strike outin the market. Growth by acquisition is bold andrisky, but can bring rewards. Many fast-growingcompanies are looking at a sale as an exit strategy, but competition is likely to be high and sale pricesmight be depressed. However, in Turkey wemight see an increase in acquisitions in thecoming months as the last PECS (Private EquityConfidence Survey) conducted in Turkey for thesecond half of 2010 portray the same positiveresults of transactions expected to be increasing.

4. Competitive landscape

When it came to looking at the impact of theeconomic background on the competitivelandscape, Turkey, EMEA and Asia Pacific showsimilar results; the overall indication is that there isa slight decrease in the number of competitors inthe market. For almost half of the respondents inEMEA, Asia Pacific and Turkey there has been nochange in the number of competitors in theirsector. For almost one third of the respondents inthe region, however, the economic environmenthas caused a net reduction in the number ofcompetitors in the sector. But for about 20percent of the respondents in the three region, the number of competitors has increased. Thismay be a consequence of other companiesrecognizing the market potential and moving in,or of competitors moving in from adjacentmarkets, either geographically or demographically.

One of the major hurdles to growth has beenpricing pressure. Asked whether the economicbackground had affected prices in their sector, 56percent in EMEA and 58 percent in Asia Pacificresponded that prices have fallen. However weobserve that prices are affected by the CEOs morein Turkey, close to 70 percent of the respondentsindicated that they had price pressure. Only 4percent in EMEA said that prices had risenwhereas in Asia Pacific and Turkey none of theCEOs stated the prices rose. This has led tomultiple problems, such as having to increasevolumes to achieve similar revenue figures, orhaving to cut back extensively on costs andincrease efficiencies to counter the pricingpressure and reducedrevenues.

Compared to EMEA & Asia Pacific, increase in R&Dinvestment in Turke, ify is higher. Just above half ofthe companies in Turkey increased their R&Dspending. While half of the companies in AsiaPacific and EMEA had no change in R&Dspendings, one fourth of the CEOs surveyedreported a decline in EMEA. Only 3% of thecompanies in Turkey reported a decrease in R&Dspending. In times of economic uncertainty, companies investing in R&D will be well placed tocapitalize in the upswing.

6. Supply chain

According to the survey, the supply chain hasbeen impacted in a variety of ways. According tothe survey, the supply chain has been impacted ina variety of ways. For half of the respondents inEMEA & Turkey, and one third of the respondentsin Asia Pacific payments are taking longer toreceive. This has an impact on cash flow, marginand profitability for many companies. For 21percent of respondents in EMEA, for 11 percent ofrespondents in Asia Pacific and one fourth inTurkey, reported that minor suppliers arestruggling and may exit the market. This will havean impact on companies that rely on single sourcesuppliers: as key component suppliers fold theirproduction may be affected. It may also have animpact on margins, because component pricesmay have to rise to keep suppliers viable whileend-user pricing is under pressure.

Majority of the respondents have not had troubleraising funds in EMEA and Asia Pacific, howeverTurkish CEOs had comparatively more trouble inraising funds compared to Asia Pacific and EMEA.When asked challenges in raising funds, majorityof the respondents were positive and reported nochallenges. Among those who are faced withdifficulties in challenging funds, the majorchallenge is reported as equity issuance In Turkeyand Asia Pacific, however in EMEA it is reported asdebt which is the second important challengestated by the CEOs in Turkey. The problem ofraising debt is a large scale problemfor many businesses and is changing the waymany businesses have to operate. Access to creditand overdraft facilities are no longer as freelyavailable, and are generally less generous andmore expensive to procure. This will put a brakeon the expansion ambitions of many companiesand also sort out the well-run and operationallyefficient from those that were financing growththrough managing debt.

8. Talent

The responses to questions about recruitment andtalent retention painted a mixed picture. For 33 percent of the CEOs in EMEA, 28 percentof the CEOs in Asia Pacific and 39 percent of theCEOs in Turkey surveyed, there has been nochange in hiring. For the three region, it is apositive finding that downsizing is below 10percent. However, 32 percent in EMEA and 39percent both in Asia Pacific and Turkey respondedthat they have accelerated their hiring, but closeto 30 percent in Asia Pacific and EMEA– said theyhave slowed hiring, whereas in Turkey only 19percent of the CEOs indicated that they sloweddown hiring.

When asked about talent retention, for the threeregions, almost half of the surveyed companiessaid there has been no change. This view, however, was not shared by all respondents in thethree regions, one third expect that employeeturnover to be more difficult. In contrast, 25percent of respondents in EMEA, 16 percent inTurkey and 15 percent in Asia Pacific stated thatthe economic circumstances mean lost employeescan easily be replaced. This is a significant changefrom a couple of years ago, where talent wasscarce and conserving and encouraging it was akey business strength and competitive edge. Nowthere is more talent available, companies arewilling to hire and fire more readily.

However, companies must also realize that oncegood times return, a reputation for employeesatisfaction will again be a key ingredient in hiringnew talent. Also, company culture is embodied inthe workforce. It may leak to competitors asemployees move, as well as being diluted if thereis a lot of turnover in the ranks.

9. Environment

The survey responses to the question aboutenvironmental aspects were very revealing.According to 81% of respondents in Turkey, customers only care about prices and Green issuesare not factors. This percentage is significantlylower in EMEA & Asia Pacific. Clearly, theeconomic downturn has had an impact oncustomers’ relationship with Green aspects. Indifficult times companies aim to survive, and extracost for Green is not top of many purchasingcriteria. However, for many customers a Greenstrategy is still important and companies mustplace Green issues at the forefront of theirdevelopment agenda as both legislation as well ascustomer demand will require it. Many customersneed to change their perception of Green. Inmany cases it can lead to operational savings, such as longer use of assets or reduced power orcooling bills, which is much more a financialexcellence metric for the CFO than a purely Greenmessage would be.

10. Positive outcomes

Despite the various challenges presented bycurrent economic circumstances, a vast majority ofrespondents said they have experienced positiveoutcomes as a result of the downturn. The majorpositive outcome for Asia Pacific and Turkish CEOsis less staff turnover whereas for EMEA CEOs it isdecreased cost of labor. The second best outcomeof the economic downturn for Turkish CEOs is thedecline in competitive pressures due tocompetitors going out of business; for EMEA andAsia Pacific CEOs, it is employees working harder. There are some CEOs (20 percent of the CEOs inTurkey, 11 percent of the CEOs in EMEA and 6percent of the CEOs in Asia Pacific), who statedthat they have experienced no positive outcome.

A positive approach

Confidence remains high among the CEOs wesurvey. But with the fallout from the economicrecession now evident, it is clear that optimism istempered with realism regarding growthprospects, talent and R&D. The overwhelmingimpression is that the downturn will not stop thesehigh-growth companies from pursuing their goals. In total, 94 percent of Turkish respondentsexpected their target markets to grow in 2010 andonwards, compared to 6 percent who expectedtheir markets to decline. Another positiveindication was respondents’ attitude to targets: 87percent of CEOs have either kept their initial 2010sales targets or revised them upwards, indicatingthat many are achieving previously set goals.Despite this optimism, it is clear there are manyproblems facing these fast-growing companies. Interms of supply chain, 52 percent of CEOs saidthey are finding payments are taking longer toreceive, impacting cash flow, margins andprofitability. A total of 29 percent of respondentssaid that suppliers are struggling and may exit themarket, leading to uncertainty on componentsupply and pricing. Additionally, the average five-year revenue growth rates for this year’sTechnology Fast50 Turkey companies is 762percent, which is a step down from 2.721 percentlast year, however still above from 2006, 2007 and2008 average growth results.

Adapt to survive

In the face of these challenges, many companiesshowed a willingness to adapt and pursue newstrategies. For 77 percent of Turkish CEOs, theeconomic backdrop has caused them to be morefocused on organic growth. A smaller proportion,19 percent, said they have become more focusedon acquisitions. The downturn has caused manycompanies to change their approach to themarket. While 32 percent of respondents said theyhave not had to change their target customer, theremaining 68 percent said the economicenvironment has caused them to make changes.Of these, 35 percent said they have changed thetarget size of customer to focus on largercompanies, 23 percent said they are targetingcustomers in other geographies, and 10 percentare focusing more on smaller companies.

Talent

Last year, finding, hiring and retaining qualifiedemployees was the biggest operational challengein managing growth. This year, only a third ofrespondents indicated that employee turnoverwould be difficult, with 16 percent saying it wouldnot be difficult to replace lost employees. This is asignificant shift in both attitude and marketconditions. Companies can be more flexible inhuman capital in these times, but must bear inmind additional factors that may influence theability to hire quality in the future as conditionsimprove.

Going Green

There has been a change in attitude towardsenvironmental issues among customers. A total of81 percent of respondents said customers onlycare about price and Green aspects are not afactor. This percentage is significantly lower inEMEA & Asia Pacific. Clearly, the economicdownturn has had an impact on customers’relationship with Green aspects. The challenge isthat tough times bring out a razor focus on costsand efficiencies. Unless backed by legislation,Green issues are often an added cost that manycompanies can do without.

Looking ahead

Many Turkish CEOs have their eyes firmly fixed onthe future. When asked if the economicenvironment has affected their company’s spendon R&D, 45 percent said there has been nochange and 52 percent said they have increasedR&D spend. In addition, 58 percent of companiessaid they have not had trouble raising funds, despite the difficult times. This investment in thefuture will set them up to be competitive duringthe upturn.
