Hello Discovery Family!
As summer begins to wind down and we approach the start of a new school year, I wanted to take a moment to introduce my-self. My name is Hollie Smith and I’ll be your new PTSA president this school year. A little about me… I have one daughter going into 4th grade at Discovery and one daughter going into 6th grade at Pine Lake Middle School. My husband and I are both from Olympia, Washington (Yes we were “high school sweehearts”) and after a period of time living in the Midwest, we are so hap-py to be part of this wonderful community of Sammamish. Even more so, we feel in-credibly lucky to be part of the Discovery Elementary Family. What an incredi-ble school community we have! I am very excited for a new school year and look for-ward to getting to know your family this year.
Hollie Smith
PTSA President
It is an honor to introduce myself to you as the new principal
at Discovery Elementary. Though I am new to Issaquah
School District, I have worked in public education over 20
years now—it’s hard to believe how fast the time goes! I began my career teaching
2nd grade. I moved on to teach 4th and 5th grade, and also spent time at the middle
level teaching 6th through 8th grade. Most recently I worked as an assistant prin-
cipal at both middle and elementary levels in Kent School District. Outside of
school I enjoy a lot of outdoor activities so I am very happy to be moving to this
beautiful area.
As I have had an opportunity to meet and begin working with staff members these
last few weeks, I have seen their warmth and commitment to doing their best for
your children. Our custodians are ahead in preparing the building. Teachers have
already been preparing their classrooms for the upcoming year and many have al-
so attended classes to continue to hone their instructional skills. September 1st is not
far away, and I am so looking forward to this day.

Bus Greeters Needed
This program helps get the wheels rolling during the first week of school. Bus greeters will meet students as they exit the bus at school. They will help kids
learn their bus numbers, by writing the bus number on their hand as they exit the bus. After school, they will hold signs with bus numbers and assist children to get to the correct bus.
Approx time investment 15 min in the AM and 15 min in the PM (Sept 1st - 8th). Please sign up here: http://discoveryptsa.org/Packet/BusGreetersVolunteer
Lunch Room Helper
Assist the students at the beginning of the year, each day for two weeks, to get their student numbers and receive their lunches. Walk around and
help any kids who need help opening their lunch containers or who may have questions. Great way to interact with the kids. Lunches run from 11:30-12:50, but most of the help will
be needed during the first lunch (K-1st grade). Please sign up here: http://discoveryptsa.org/Packet/LunchRoomHelperVolunteer
