Easter Message from the Director of Education

“He is not here, for he has risen, just as he said.” (Matthew 28: 6) Holy Week is upon us, that very special time when we remember and celebrate in a highly significant way the core foundation of our Christian belief – the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a time when we gather with family, and with our parish community to profess who we are as Christians and Catholics. St Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 15:14) that ‘if Christ be not risen, then is your faith in vain.’ This Holy Week, we reassert to ourselves, and to the world that indeed our Faith is not in vain, that Christ has conquered death and sin, and renewed us. Our Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday Night will speak to us of liberation, redemption, re-birth and New Life; the lighting of the Paschal Candle will herald for us the Light which is the Risen Christ; the culmination of our Lenten observances will see in us a renewal of our spirit; the Blessing of the new Baptismal water will forcefully remind us of our own Baptism. On Easter morning, we will sing in triumph that ‘Jesus Christ is risen today,’ and joyfully add the word that has been hushed since Ash Wednesday – ‘Alleluia!’ May you and your loved ones experience the joys and the renewal, which is at the heart of this Easter Season.

TORONTO COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS

(Earth Day Leadership Projects) This year Mayor Miller’s 20-Minute Make-over is scheduled for Friday, April 22 (Earth Day), with the Community Clean-up following on Saturday, April 23.

TCDSB elementary and secondary schools are asked to participate in the 20-Minute Makeover and encouraged to consider a larger community clean-up.

A 20-Minute Makeover at its simplest level is a school community (or representation of a school community) setting aside 20 minutes to clean-up the school (inside and/or outside).

The idea of clean-up happening on the same day on school grounds right across the city is very attractive, but we recognize that sometimes the designated day does not fit a school’s schedule. If you are not able to arrange a clean-up on these days, we recommend that you choose one day between Monday, April 18 and Saturday, May 28.

To assist schools in planning this year’s event, the Facilities and Student Leadership Departments are working with several other partners to produce a community clean-up guide. This guide will include:

• Ideas for a school’s 20-Minute Makeover and Clean Community Campaign • Safety and equipment • Logistics of garbage and recycling disposal • Registration information for schools who wished to recognize their students’

participation • Prayer services to be used during Earth Week

Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen

Participation in events such as these allows students to live the Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen, as they do their part to help create a clean and beautiful Toronto. This leadership project might be championed by a student leadership team, (i.e. ESP, Smile) an environmental club, the chaplaincy team, a science or social science class or staff and students who are passionate about environmental issues. We would ask that all schools include their caretakers as major partners in this initiative.

This original musical promotes healthy body image, positive self-esteem, healthy eating and an active lifestyle for adolescents. The story, set in a typical “transition years” school and centred on a series of nine musical numbers, follows the poign-

ant struggles of twenty characters as they try to make sense of such issues as worrying about what “They Say”, being “Popular”, the roles of

“Boys and Girls” and “Who Am I?” An audience question period with the cast will follow the show.

To assist in this process, a pre-show teacher’s guide is available upon request. This show is suitable for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Tickets are FREE.

St. Pius X students are proving to be good sports when it comes to charity The Mirror – Lisa Rainford, March 4, 2005

St. Pius X Catholic School students have raised about $6,000 for Rwandan children through a program called Sport for Peace founded by an African track champion. Grade 8 students were first introduced to Sport for Peace as part of their Confirmation service project by two parents, Mary DiFrancesco and Pam Walker. DiFrancesco had always wanted to go to Africa and when her brother Matthew went to Rwanda to work with a group called Right to Play, she jumped at the chance to visit him. DiFrancesco spent 12 days in Rwanda last October where she was introduced to Charles Nkazamyampi, the founder of Sport for Peace. Nkazamyampi has always loved sports and played as a kid at school where he first began running track. A semi-finalist in his first international track meet, his career soon took off. He won a bronze medal in the 800 metre at the African track championships in Algeria and represented Burundi at the Atlanta Olympic Games. That's where it struck him how sports could be a tool for peace. While in Atlanta, a journalist asked him about conflict in Burundi. "He knew I'd lost both my parents in the fighting and asked me, 'are you representing your country or your ethnicity?' I couldn't help but answer my country. I never thought about politics when I was running or involved in sports -- I only thought about the game and my colleagues." It was the exchange with the reporter that made him realize that sport could be used as therapy for youth involved in conflict. Because of the instability in his country of Burundi, Nkazamyampi decided to relocate to Rwanda, a country with similar problems, but somewhat more stable, and he founded La Foundation Sport Pour Paix (Sport for Peace). Since its inception three years ago, it has grown to about 150 children and adults and helps about 500 children on a weekly basis. "The majority of kids Charles works with are heads of families. Some kids are orphans or from one-parent families or street kids," DiFrancesco said. "Because of the death toll - from AIDS and the Genocide. They can't afford to go to school. Even the kids who go to school don't have extra-curricular activities. You can see the idleness there. There's nothing for them to do." LUNCH MONEY St. Pius students responded enthusiastically to helping Rwandan children. They willingly donated their Friday lunch money and appealed to their family members for donations. The younger grades contributed with the Grade 3 class creating a booklet about making the world a better place which was sold with proceeds going to the Rwanda project. Our Lady of Sorrows and Bishop Allen Academy are two other schools that have contributed significantly to fundraising efforts. DiFrancesco was able to purchase equipment such as basketball and soccer balls and skipping ropes, which she brought to Rwanda. "All grades have helped out," she said. "The children have gained a great deal through their efforts to help children half a world away." Nkazamyampi visited St. Pius in January and brought messages from the children he works with. During his visit to the school, he told the children that Rwandan children are in desperate need of a recreation centre and financial aid so that they can attend school. It costs just $30 Canadian to send a Rwandan child to school for one year, DiFrancesco said. RECREATION CENTRE It is St. Pius students' goal to raise $4,000 for a recreation centre from which Sport for Peace will be run. Supporting Sport for Peace will be an annual Grade 8 project, DiFrancesco said. For more information about Sport for Peace, contact Mary DiFrancesco at 416-604-8559 or Pam Walker at 416-760-7506.

Black students find wealth of history Success not found through music and sports, teens discover in class Stavroula Meditskos York Guardian Mar. 4, 2005

Junior Agyapong is a young black man with big aspirations - but he's certain that none of them include a career in basketball or rap music. The 17-year-old university-bound student is considering a career in business administration, chartered accounting or as an entrepreneur. Last Friday, he helped spread that message to his peers at Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary through a highly rhythmic slam poetry presentation, part of a special assembly commemorating the end of Black History Month. Agyapong and other students in the school's black history class performed a medley of show-stopping dance, singing, poetry and drama presentations. In a heartfelt delivery, Agyapong told the stories of two young black men - a scholar and a basketball player - who have tough lives and yearn for better. "What I was trying to highlight was the negative situations that young black males go through in the sense that although they do live in dangerous areas or the ghettoes, as they call it, it doesn't mean they have to stay there. They should try to pursue better," said the Grade 12 student, adding that he was inspired to write about young black men after watching Da Kink in my Hair, an Ed Mirvish production about the trials and tribulations of young black women. "The scholar that I talked about - the guy who went to school and came back with a 93 - he's a perfect example of what we should be striving for, rather than saying, 'we're in the slums,' and not trying to leave from it," he added. The school's African-Canadian heritage course is unique to the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Designed for grades 11 and 12, the course was the brainchild of teacher Michelle Perkins-Ball. Now in its third year, Perkins-Ball said she felt a need for such a course after witnessing the struggles of young black students and their parents. "My husband and I have many black friends - my best friend is from Uganda and my husband has been a Big Brother to a kid from Trinidad since he's been six - and we really saw some of the struggles they went through in the system and some of the experiences they had that weren't too positive. So we thought, what could happen if, instead of just seeing entertainers and thuggery or rappers, if other types of role models were presented to them at a young age? What a difference it could make,' " she said. According to Perkins-Ball, the curriculum is interdisciplinary, combining sociology, history and the arts. In Friday's presentation, students showed off everything they learned in the course, from African drumming and step dancing to a solemn re-enactment of the funeral of Emmett Till, a young American black man killed by whites in 1955 Mississippi. "Students learn to identify with role models other than in the entertainment and athletic fields. There are so many great people who contributed to Canadian and American history who are not athletes and entertainers, so we move away from stereotypes, for example, the history of the Loyalists in Canada and the soldiers in the war who defended our nation and helped us to have Canada," Perkins-Ball said.

Grades 11 and 12 members of the African heritage program at Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School mounted a special Black History Month performance at the school last Friday. The school's African heritage course is unique in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Students from Romero’s special needs class presented their own version of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. Students played the roles of famous people attending a birthday party for Paris and Nikki Hilton. Included in the guest list were: Ricky Martin, Anna Kournacova, Paris and Nikki Hilton, Mr. Bean, Vince Carter from the Toronto Raptors, Eminem and 50 cent, Shrek and the Fairy Godmother and Beyoncé. Borrowing a page from the Grinch’s storyline, “Eminem” steals all the birthday presents at the party. The true meaning of family and friends comes out when, rather than being upset by the missing gifts, the guests continue to celebrate by singing “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles.

Established in 1981, the program aims to recognize outstanding young people who are either involved in community service or have performed acts of heroism or bravery. Joshua Liu's parents knew their son was special when he was able to read and write by age four and add, subtract, multiply and divide by grade 1.The 16-year-old Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School student taken a leadership role in a number of projects. Liu founded a youth organization in his school to tackle child poverty across Canada and also founded a national initiative to engage students across Canada in science, math and technology.

Child poverty is a cause close to Liu's heart. He and his brother founded Our Kids Our Future (OKOF), a youth organization aimed to end child poverty in Toronto and Canada. Having excelled in the math and science fields, Joshua founded Students Mentorship Association Regarding Technology and Science (SMARTS) to inform students nation wide about opportunities in those areas. He is also a math tutor for younger students. Scarborough's Kristian Carlo Maple was one of 12 young people named as recipients for the 2004 award. The 18-year-old has been praised for the courage and quick thinking he displayed when his uncle's boat The Silver went down off the coast of Iceland Aug. 30. His uncle, Thomas Eversen, 48, of East York, died at sea.

Students focus on safety, helping the needy Justin Skinner, The Mirror, March 6, 2005

Four North York high schools held special events this past week to put a focus on safety and help out the less fortunate. Northview Heights Secondary School, Cardinal Carter Academy, Brebeuf College and Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School each were holding fundraisers that dealt with difficult issues facing students and raise money for the North York Food Bank.

The events were part of the Empowered Student Partnerships (ESP) initiative, which brings together local police officers and students to address school and personal safety. "These events are all about fundraising and getting the ESP initiative out there," said Loretto Abbey child and youth worker Lina Naccarato. "Each school's doing something a little different, with all the proceeds going to the North York Food Bank."Cardinal Carter held a week-long canned food drive to supply the local food bank with much needed food supplies. Northview Heights was having a doughnut sale event and Loretto Abbey and Brebeuf College were teaming up to treat each other to some sweets. "The boys from Brebeuf College will be coming here on Thursday to sell ice cream waffles to our students, and then our girls will go to Brebeuf to sell ice cream waffles over there," Naccarato said. While the fundraising is important to ensure that those in need have food through the lean winter months, the schools are all ensuring that the safety focus of the ESP initiatives is not ignored. "Every fork used in our waffle drive will have an anti-bullying message attached, so the students will learn a bit about safety while they eat," Naccarato said. The schools invited police officers from 32 Division into their schools as part of the week's events, and some were expected to stop by the schools.

"We invited them and when we mentioned waffles and ice cream, the response we got from them was 'you know officers'," Naccarato said. "They've been wonderful, very supportive and very friendly. There are always officers who come to our meetings and communicate what's been going on at headquarters." ESP programs have focused on a number of safety and crime issues facing students, including violence prevention, a student Crime Stoppers program, drug and alcohol awareness and inclusion.

Health and Safety … helping to preserve people, property and resources by preventing workplace injuries and accidents

SLIPS and FALLS

The Canadian Institute for Health Information(CIHI) released data on March 2, 2005 that almost 12,000 Ontarians went to emergency rooms in 2002-2003 after falling on the ice. Of those visits, about 1 in 6 were severe enough to require a hospital stay of one night or more.

According to CIHI emergency room staff treated patients who fell on the ice for a variety of injuries. Fractures (orthopaedic injuries) accounted for the bulk of cases, with 30%. The majority of fractures (54%) in ER involved the upper body (wrists or arms, for example), while 37% involved the lower body (ankles, feet or hips, for example). Sprains and other musculoskeletal-related injuries were seen in 20% of cases, while head injuries were diagnosed in 16% of those who visited the ER after falling on the ice.

At the TCDSB from January 1 – February 28, 2005 the following slips and falls from the same level have been reported:

Slipping/Falling on Ice / Snow – 33 Slipping/Falling at an Ice-skating Rink – 5 Slipping/Falling on a wet surface – 7

Some of the injuries that have resulted from these incidents have been reportable as “critical” because of the extent of the injury.

SLIP HAZARDS

1. Winter conditions resulting in the accumulation of ice and snow require a great deal of caution when walking on these surfaces. Simple prevention measures such as effective snow and ice removal, sand and salt distribution in pedestrian areas and appropriate footwear would likely reduce the risk of injury. In addition, walking techniques such as a shorter stride length and slowing the walking pace will reduce the risk of slipping.

2. The Walking Surface - floors should be kept clean, dry and free of obstacles. Report immediately for cleanup any spilled liquid, or puddles of water. Cover temporarily with a chair or other visible object.

3. Type and Condition of the soles of your shoes. The flatter the shoe the greater the

surface area for slip resistance.

Understanding ADHD Behaviour This seminar will be of interest to parents, educators, doctors, psychologists, social workers, counselors, child and youth workers and adolescents and adults with ADHD. This course will present researchers' current understanding of ADHD and how it effects behaviour. Behaviour will be looked at in both the home and school setting. ADHD in the school system is mainstream and must be dealt with by educators in conjunction with the child's parents. Once a child is recognized then school interventions are critical to the holistic management of the child. In this context, this talk will speak to the global planning and the role the school and home takes in implementing a behavioral based program that integrates with medications and family therapy. The behavioral interventions will speak to the issues of positive reinforcement, learning problems, their management and social skills programming.
