Board will not implement transportation service cuts this year The Board will not move forward with reductions to student transportation service. The matter will be discussed during deliberations around the 2007-2008 school year budget. Capital Funding Update The Ministry of Education Memorandum SB01 “2006-07 Initiatives Impacting School Board Capital Reserves” provided details on the Ministry’s financial support of school board debt commitments. The result for TCDSB is: (1) Enrolment Pressures Grant funding may now be used to alleviate accommodation pressures. The grant will be $1.4 million grant per year for 25 years, which would generate approximately $18 million in debenture funding. (2) the Ministry will be addressing the Board’s Stranded Debt with funding that allows for debenture issuance. However, if the Board sells a facility or vacant site, 50% of the revenue over $100,000 must be applied to the debt. Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award

HISTORY This fund honours the memory of Mario Gasparotto, a dedicated and much-loved TCDSB educator, well known for his commitment to the arts in TCDSB schools. Mario was employed by the MSSB, now TCDSB, from 1971 until 2001. While pursuing his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Toronto, he taught visual arts and art history in MSSB high schools. His passion for art was well known and inspired many art students. In 1983, he became art consultant for the Board, becoming a mentor to many art teachers. In the mid 1990's he was appointed superintendent of education with the TCDSB and held that position until his death. Mario is remembered for his love of art, his breadth of knowledge, his high standards, and his generous manner with students and teachers alike.

DESCRIPTION OF AWARD The Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award is a special fund administered through The Angel Foundation for Learning to support graduating students planning to pursue post-secondary studies in visual arts at college or university. Two awards of $500 each will be given to students each year.

CRITERIA Allocations for the Mario Gasparotto Memorial Visual Arts Award will be made by The Angel Foundation for Learning to a grade 12 student who has been accepted to post-secondary visual arts studies at college or university. The selection will be made by a panel of visual arts educators and will be based on: • The quality of the student's work i.e. originality, creativity, problem-solving and technical ability • The student's overall achievement in visual arts • The student's post-secondary plans • The student's overall contribution to the school and community

APPLICATION PROCESS Students will be nominated by the Department Heads for Visual Arts in TCDSB secondary schools. (Maximum of 2 per school) For each application the following is required: • A letter of application from the student, explaining post-secondary plans • A portfolio of snapshots of at least three major works. Each snapshot must be accompanied by a half-page statement describing the dimensions and media of the work as well as an artist's statement explaining the purpose of the work • A letter of recommendation from the student's teacher detailing the student's achievement and work habits in visual arts as well as school and community involvement • Evidence of acceptance into a post-secondary visual arts program

SELECTION PROCESS • All applications will be forwarded by the school Department Heads for Visual Arts to the TCDSB Program Coordinator for the Arts by May 14, 2007. • A panel of arts educators will review the applications and prepare a list of finalists. • Finalists will make an oral presentation of their works to the panel in late May. • The panel will make the final decision regarding recipients of the award. Notification of the winners will be made in early June. Note: Winning the award is conditional on the students being accepted into a postsecondary program of study in visual arts.

Joe vs. the Volcano is a comedy about finding the courage to take the leap. Adapted from the film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Joe Banks is forced to leave his little island in New York, experience the world, fall in love, and... jump into a volcano! Whether it’s adventure, love, or volcanoes, the question is: will Joe really do it? Joe vs. the Volcano is a great play for young people as they confront the imminent leap from grade school to high school; from high school to work/ higher learning, or for anyone

who needs to remember that the key to life is the courage to live it.

Local school gets gift of computers CLARK KIM 04/04/07 Scarborough Mirror

The students in the gifted program at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic elementary school received some much-appreciated and much-needed gifts this week. They set up their newly refurbished computers Tuesday distributed through a program called Computer for Schools run by Renewed Computer Technology, a charitable organization that works to empower educators and other non-profit agencies. "Without Computer For Schools giving us these computers, we wouldn't be able to run these programs," said principal Maureen Flynn, citing as an example the robotics component of the gifted class, which accepts students from 27 other elementary Scarborough schools. "We're always in need of technology." The extra computers were part of a larger donation by the provincial government. More than 500 computers once used in the province's employment and training network program were donated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to be distributed to schools across Ontario. Minister Chris Bentley and MPP Bas Balkissoon (Scarborough-Rouge River) made the announcement at St. Ignatius of Loyola, which is located in the McCowan Road and Finch Avenue area. "All these young people here will get to work on a computer of their own," Balkissoon said. Shauna McCaffrey, executive director of Renewed Computer Technology, noted that about half their computer donations come from the federal and provincial governments. Other donations come from the private sector including banks and insurance companies. "Twenty-five per cent of all computers in schools comes from us (across Canada)," McCaffrey said. "We also supply computers to charities that have an educational component." Since its inception in 1993, the organization has provided 288,000 refurbished computers to schools and charities nationwide given on a first-come, first-serve basis and according to the specific needs. One of the main challenges is to continually meet the better computers as technology continues to grow at a rapid pace. "P4 computers and laptops are now in high demand," McCaffrey said. "Our demands always exceed supplies."

Etobicoke students head to Vimy CLARK KIM 04/05/07 The Etobicoke Guardian They learned about the infamous battle of Vimy Ridge in Grade 10 history class. Now 25 Etobicoke students from Michael Power/St. Joseph high school and Bishop Allen Academy will get to see first-hand where the Allied forces led by Canadian soldiers defeated Germany troops during a key battle in the First World War. They joined 60 other Toronto Catholic students and travelled to France Thursday for the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Battle at Vimy Ridge taking place April 9. More than 4,000 Canadian school children are expected to witness the ceremony with Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Stephen Harper also confirmed to attend. "I heard this trip being described as Canada's biggest field trip for high school students," said Mark Chmielowiec, excursion co-ordinator and teacher at Michael Power. The Etobicoke school usually plans its long distance field trips for students in March. But teachers and students agreed it was worth delaying the trip this year to coincide with the Vimy Ridge anniversary. Canadian history books often cite the battle of Vimy Ridge in which a relatively inexperienced Canadian army made a name for itself. And the significance of the battle doesn't seem to be lost on the students. "It's just exciting for me because I always wanted to go there," said Jonathan Collaton, 17, who's been interested in war history from an early age. "I want to see the terrain and see how they actually won the battle." For fellow students Laura Cerullo and Emily Finucci, it'll be especially exciting to see thousands of students across Canada converging in one spot for the same reason. "To be there and actually experience it, you'll never get an opportunity like that again," Cerullo said. The Vimy Ridge commemoration is, however, just one of many things to do during their one-week excursion. They have a full itinerary set with stops in Paris and cities in England including London and Bath as well as a visit to Stonehenge, before returning on April 14. Another highlight will be the trip to Rome to attend Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square with Pope Benedict XVI presiding. A larger crowd is expected there with Catholic pilgrims from around the world gathering to mark Easter. "It's not often schools will pick up and go away for Easter," said Catena Manco, who teaches French and Italian at Michael Power, and will also be accompanying the students on the field trip. "It's a big deal and it's very exciting."

Teen gets ultimate fan treatment at Junos FANNIE SUNSHINE 04/04/07 North York Mirror Doritos Ultimate Fan Nicole Fernandes attends the Doritos pre-Junos party Sunday Apr 1 afternoon at the 2nd Avenue Grill in Sakatoon. After seeing a television ad for a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Juno Awards as part of Doritos Ultimate Fan contest, Nicole Fernandes entered the challenge online, figuring she had nothing to lose, but perhaps a lot to gain." They called me a few days later and told me I won a trip (to the Junos in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan)," the 15-year-old St. Joseph Morrow Park High School student said. Several days later, Nicole received the thrilling news she was chosen as the Ultimate Fan and would present the Fan Choice Award live from out west last Sunday. "I was thrilled, I was extremely excited," she said. Arriving in Saskatoon Thursday with her mother, the Grade 10 student was treated to Juno parties and a hair and make-up makeover before walking the red carpet. "It was wild, people were cheering," Nicole said. "I got to hug Nelly (Furtado) on stage and give her the award." Furtado, one of Nicole's favourite performers, beat out nominees Gregory Charles, Michael Bublé, Nickelback and Sarah McLachlan to win the Fan Choice Award. "I was a bit nervous on stage, but Doritos was encouraging me, telling me I could do it," she said. "They were really good to me." Nicole also got a chance to hang out backstage with the likes of Sam Roberts, Mobile, Keishia Chanté and Eva Avila milling about. "It was more than I expected," said Nicole, adding she has autographs from Hedley, Mobile, Furtado and Chris Murphy from Sloan. "I had a really great time."

School's greenhouse a labour of love LISA RAINFORD 04/04/07 Bloor West Junction-Roncesvalles – The Villager

To say that Stanley Roszak has a green thumb is putting it mildly. It was no surprise that Roszak, who has been working with plants his entire life, became a horticulturist. Born in Portugal, he came to Canada in 1990 with his wife and two boys. A gardener for the City of Toronto, Roszak also tends to the greenhouse atop Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School. After his eldest son graduated from the school in 2000, Roszak approached the principal about cleaning up the greenhouse, which was in a sorry state. Although gardening wasn't at the top of the principal's list of priorities, he was more than happy to let Roszak work his magic. The job required little money, just a lot of TLC. "When I came, they had some jungle here," he recalled. "I cut it back. The next year, everything started coming back." It helps that Roszak collects seeds - from everywhere and anywhere. He admits he can't leave a plant in a garbage heap along the side of the road or in the dumpster. "Every plant has a story," he said. Teachers have been known to steal away to the greenhouse for a few minutes of peace. "Teachers tell me, 'I come here to relax,'" Roszak said, surrounded by greenery. Roszak himself would gaze up to the top of the school every morning on his way to work wondering just what the greenhouse held. The school used to have horticulture classes as part of its curriculum when it was built more than 30 years ago. Roszak is doing his part to give the students an appreciation of plant life. His work is funded in part by the school's annual plant sale that usually takes place in early spring, after Victoria Day weekend. "Even St. Francis is here," Roszak said patting the top of the sculpture, a smile on his face. "It used to be in the chapel but no one loves plants more than St. Francis." Until recently, Roszak had been collaborating with Stop Community Food Centre, growing vegetables for the community food bank. He has exhibited his work at various venues including the CNE and Canada Blooms. In fact, Canada Blooms is where Roszak caught the attention of a teacher from Hamilton, who was running a March break camp for kids. She asked him share his expertise with the students. It is evident that Roszak loves his vocation. Plants, he said, "never give me a hard time. They're always happy. They don't give me the cold shoulder."
