December 2010 Dingeman Elementary School 11840 Scripps Creek Drive San Diego, CA 92131 858-549-4437 Sponsored by the Family Faculty Connection (FFC) Principal ’ s Message Dear Dingeman Families, Community Members and Friends, Seasons greetings! I am excited to share with you the busy happenings around the campus. First, you have to see our amazing musical production of “ Sleeping Beauty ” which will be performed by Mrs. Schwartz ’ s and Mr. Saguil’ s class on Wednesday, December 15 th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. It will be a night to remember! We are excited to share an incredible opportunity for our school. We have been selected to be a part of a three year grant on building a positive school environment. This grant is called the Positive Behavior Interview System. We are working as a school team collecting data from staff, students and parents on what ’ s working well and where we need to grow. Your input is valuable to us. Be on the lookout for survey materials that will be going home with your child this month. Our staff is reading The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. If you want a quick read and an inspiring book, pick up The Energy Bus! As a school, we are going to put our positive thinking into action with our students and community. Did you know 110,124 children in San Diego live in poverty? Forty-six percent are fed through Feeding America San Diego. This month, students are going to decorate food bags for the FASD project. What ’ s so wonderful is that our students are doing something to end hunger for children in our city. The possibilities are endless as students and teachers think of ideas to take their positive energy and turn it into action! Our school wide read aloud for our Tiger Rallies continues to be very successful. We are reading The 7 Habits for Happy Kids by Sean Covey. Students have learned about practical applications for the following habits: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First and Think Win-Win . We hope your child is coming home explaining these habits and trying on the strategies for success. At the next Tiger Rally on January 10 th , we will learn about “ Seek to Understand, Then to Be Understood ” . Please join us if you can! On behalf of our staff, we would like to wish all of you a wonderful, restful holiday season and a very Happy New Year! School resumes on January 3, 2011. See you then! In Partnership for Excellence, Kimie Lochtefeld Principal A Note from our FFC President Dear Dingeman Families, Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving Holiday with your friends and family. Now it is time to jump into December. We are so fortunate to have such a full December this year. The month began with a western-themed barbeque during lunch. This is a new event that Mr. Beraud organized for us. The following day, December 2 nd , we had a special assembly. It took place outdoors because a live cow visited our campus! Yes, I did say a LIVE COW! The Dairy Council offers this unique educational experience for our children. Be sure to ask your child about it. On the evening of December 7 th , our wonderful Honor Choir will perform at Barnes & Noble. Some of our very own teachers will be there to read aloud to the children. Thank you, Mr. Saguil and the Honor Choir for sharing such lovely music with us. Thank you to all of the teachers who are spending the evening with us, too. This has become a lovely tradition for Dingeman, and I am looking forward to it. All of Scripps Ranch is invited to participate in the SRCA ’ s 40 th anniversary celebration on Sunday, December 12 th . We will have the opportunity to travel on foot through scenic Scripps Ranch on a 4-mile course that will be closed to traffic. If you are interested, please see www.srca.org for more information. With so much good fortune for our campus and our children, we also recognize that others may not be as fortunate as us. Therefore, we are partnering with Scholastic Books to collect new pajamas for children who cannot afford them. Between now and December 16 th , please bring new, unused pajamas ( in all sizes, from infant to adult ) and drop them in the PJ box on campus. We will deliver them to Scholastic ’ s drop-off site in San Diego at the end of the drive. If you would like to help collect, or have questions, please contact Jen Bremner at [email protected] . . Lastly, remember to thank our teachers for the many things they do for our children. Some of the teachers will have wish lists available for parents who would like to purchase supplies or books for classrooms. Enjoy the holiday celebrations on campus and around town, and have a safe Winter Break! Sincerely, Shellie Kalinsky FFC President 2010-2011 Tiger Pause Bulletin

YOU Helped Provide Students with Amazing Assemblies

Because of the strong support by Dingeman parents, our assemblies during the 2010-2011school year have never been better. Our students have already seen a New York Theater group perform a rendition of Click Clack Moo and a popular San Diego dance troupe combine sports with dance. This month, Dingeman welcomed the California Dairy Association to our campus as a live cow helped to highlight good nutrition, science and agriculture. From music enrichment and theater arts, to laser shows and bringing agriculture to

our campus, the money that was raised through our pledge drive is providing Dingeman students with some fantastic assemblies this year. Hopefully your student will come home inspired and educated by a fantastic assembly YOU helped provide for them.

Book Drive and Peace Fair a HUGE Success! Every Thursday our third grade students participate in Academy classes . One of the Academies, Building Bridges of Peace, studies peace heroes and conflict resolution. Throughout the session, students plan and implement a project that helps to make the world a better place. Yes! Kids Can Make a Difference! Our students collected over 1,500 books through their project. The books will go to students at Cesar Chavez Elementary School. There is enough so that each student can take at least two books home. Thanks to our school community for your generosity! Anyone who donated was able to spend time in the art booth, participate in the raffle or choose a small gift. Congratulations to Sydney Fillius for winning our raffle. Thanks to Nick, from Mrs. Becker's class who donated two Sea World tickets for the raffle. Thanks to James Buley for his leadership in this project. Suzanne Hagan Dingeman Elementary School

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! You are all invited to this year’s annual musical performed by Mrs. Schwartz’ 5th grade and Mr. Saguil’s 4th grade classes. Adapted and dramatized from the stories of Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm and the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Book by Vera Morris and Music and Lyrics by Bill Francoeur. This musical production is directed by Mr. Saguil and Mrs. Schwartz, 2005 recipients of the Bravissimo Award for their dedicated work in elementary school drama. The students have been working hard memorizing and expressing their lines, learning their musical parts, building sets, and learning stage operations. Parent volunteers have also spent many hours on costumes, set designs, props, and publicity. We would like to thank our Dingeman families for their generous donations provided to produce this musical. All performances will take place on Wednesday December 15th. There is also an evening performance at 7:00 p.m. To defray the costs of production, donations will be accepted at the door and Stargrams may be purchased before and after the evening performance. Stargrams are delivered to the actors the next day.

The king and queen of Never Nod have a new baby, Princess Briar Rose. The witch Evilina, who lives with a giant spider and a cat, sets a terrible curse on the poor young princess. Sixteen years later, it's up to Prince Alexander to come to Briar-Rose's rescue and the court's too... for they are all asleep! The prince must fight a Wall of Thorns, a False Princess and, most frightening of all, the exalted Dark Knight! The zany, lovable characters and the score are as enchanting as Briar-Rose, in this family favorite, suitable for all ages.

Michaela Clark (Queen Eleanor), Joanne Wang (Queen Samantha) and Bryn Tannone (Baroness)
