Although there are some hematologic conditions that pediatricians may treat as part of their primary care practice, children may present with symptoms that require the involvement or consultation of pediatric specialists. Additionally, many oncologic conditions mimic other non-malignant pediatric conditions, and it is essential for pediatric providers to streamline their differential diagnosis when subtle signs of a more serious illness arise. Lastly, children who present to their providers during and after the conclusion of treatment may have health care needs that are different from their peers.
