MOST EXCITING ENERGY MANAGEMENT COMPANIES TO WATCH IN 2015
The UK energy services market has been transformed by a huge wave of consolidation which
saw 35 significant deals from 2006 to mid-2014 (see Verdantix Where Next For UK Energy
Services?). The trend towards technology-enabled services, increasing interest in energy
management solutions from utilities, and a new focus on opening up the small and medium
enterprise (SME) market for energy management is fostering a new wave of innovation and
market entrants (see Verdantix Hot Trends For Energy Management In 2015). This report
helps investors, as well as Heads of Strategy and Product Development within energy services
firms to understand highly interesting firms, and the specific points that make them stand out.
Verdantix research highlights the most interesting, or innovative firms to be:
1. Energy data disaggregator ONZO. Founded in 2007, ONZO is a data analytics
organization providing software solutions to utilities and smart home firms in Europe,
the US and Asia Pacific. The firm has been leading the development work in energy data
disaggregation through its Highly Personalised Energy Advice application. Recently,
ONZO strengthened its senior management team by bringing in industry veteran,
Steven Daniels, as Non-Executive Director in 2014, following his role in developing the
LDC-backed business Matrix (see Verdantix Matrix Deal Fuels Competition In UK
Energy Services Market). In 2015, ONZO appointed Spencer Rigler as CEO, who was
previously VP, Energy Management, at Elster Energy ICT, a leading provider of energy
management software.
Verdantix take: Verdantix identifies data disaggregation as a potential market disrupter in the
energy data management market, as it enables energy services firms and utilities to infer
granular, appliance-level insights into energy consumption without the need for sub-metering.
The technique is gaining market acceptance with firms such as FirstFuel and Retroficiency using
disaggregation algorithms for virtual energy audits across commercial buildings. The Electric
Power Research Institute (EPRI) has also been testing the method in pilot studies. ONZO is now
applying the concept to residential consumers and SMEs, opening up interesting possibilities to
cost-effectively hone in on appliance-level activities and recommendations.
2. Specialist energy consultancy Noveus Energy. Launched in 2014 as a new firm within
the Noveus Group, Noveus Energy is a specialist energy management consultancy
operating in the UK. The firm has an ambition to shake up the energy management
market by fully integrating the management of energy procurement, energy
consumption and energy generation assets. In particular, Noveus Energy is targeting
opportunities across data centres and critical facilities, by leveraging existing onsite
backup generators and intelligent energy purchasing within energy management
strategies. Noveus Energy is led by Managing Director Bobby Collinson, an industry
veteran who co-founded energy procurement and consultancy firm, Power Efficiency,
which was sold to Balfour Beatty in 2011 for £18 million ($28 million).
Verdantix take: Noveus Energy brings more integrated thinking to energy management
programmes, by also considering strategies to maximise revenue from generation assets within
short-term demand response. This thinking reflects the fact that energy bills are not just driven
by total consumption – peak demand and time-of-use also play a significant part. This is the basis

of US-based EnerNOC’s energy management proposition too. Noveus Energy believes that by
linking energy procurement, short-term and permanent demand side reduction initiatives it can
achieve savings of 20% of current energy costs.
3. Electricity and gas data analytics firm kWIQly. Founded in 2008, kWIQly is a SaaS start
-up which provides remote energy auditing of buildings based on the analysis of
electricity and gas data. kWIQly applies pattern recognition analytics to smart meter
data and weather data to identify areas of excess energy consumption. It also provides
insight into the root cause of inefficiency, such as incorrect building schedules, boiler
sequencing or heating and cooling conflicts. Its customers include the Pfizer
headquarters, hospitals, army barracks and high-rise housing in London boroughs.
Verdantix take: While many energy data analytics applications have focused on analysing
electricity data, kWIQly’s analytics also cover gas data to provide advice about optimizing the
operation of boilers and furnaces (see Verdantix Smart Innovators: Big Energy Data Software).
kWIQly’s proposition may be of particular interest to facilities where boiler systems account for a
significant portion of energy bills, or power utilities looking to better understand the performance
of heating systems across their customer base. Its technique has been building proof points – both
the Building Research Establishment and the UK Office of Gas and Electricity Markets have
tested the method in pilot studies.
4. Fast growing energy procurement and services firm Utilitywise. This organization was
founded as an energy procurement provider in 2006, but has expanded its range of
services into energy management, including energy audits, energy saving advice and
energy data management. It has had a rapid growth with revenues rising from £11.7
million ($18.4 million) in FY 2011 to £48.6 million ($76.5 million) in FY 2014. This growth
has been supported by a number of acquisitions, such as those of consulting firms Aqua
Veritas Consulting, Clouds Consultancy and EIC, as well as T-Mac – a provider of
technology and cloud-based software for energy management. In 2014, Utilitywise
acquired ICON – a provider of multilingual contact centre services for the international
market – indicating its intent to expand services into Europe.
Verdantix take: For large equipment or service firms looking to make a strategic takeover in the
UK energy services market – Utilitywise may be an interesting target to review further. This is
because many of the independent energy services firms (such as ESG, Matrix and Utilyx, to
name a few) have already been acquired in the past three years. Another interesting aspect of
Utilitywise is its new service called Energy Alliance, which groups lots of smaller energy buyers
into one pot to help them get access to the same competitive energy deals as larger firms (see
Verdantix SMEs Are The New Battle Ground For Energy Propositions).
5. Fast growing energy services firm Anesco. This organization provides a broad range of
energy efficiency and renewable generation services to businesses, local authorities,
housing associations and homeowners. The firm was spun out from power utility,
Scottish and Southern Energy, in 2010 by executive board directors Adrian Pike and Tim
Payne. It offers its services through Energy Saving Performance Contracts, where
Anesco provides all upfront capital and recoups investments over an agreed payback
period from energy savings. Over the past three years, sales have increased 375% per

year to £106.7 million ($168.1 million) in FY 2014.
Verdantix take: While the general market for Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) in the UK
remains lacklustre, Anesco has been generating notable success by focusing its proposition on the
public sector. Private sector firms have been reluctant to sign up to complex contracts in excess of
two years, while public bodies are more willing to accept paybacks which stretch from five to
seven years. This recent growth in the public sector will be further spurred on by the
development of standardized frameworks for EPCs, such as the RE: FIT framework.
6. Wireless building energy management system firm WEMS. Founded in 1990, WEMS
claims it has developed the world’s first fully wireless energy management systems to
monitor and control HVAC, lighting and other equipment on site. Its solution also
extends into providing operational benefits through being able to identify equipment
failures, as well as provide early warning of issues that affect trading, or cause excessive
energy usage. WEMS systems are installed at more than 5,500 sites, with customers
ranging from large telcos, such as BT and Colt, to small and medium sized offices.
Verdantix take: Large commercial buildings have historically been the focus of building
management systems (BMS) installations because it is too expensive to put complex control
systems into a small building (see Verdantix Best Practices For Building Management Systems).
WEMS has been leading the development work to make BMS technology more commercially
viable for smaller buildings – by leveraging wireless technologies to lower the cost of installation,
as a result of less expensive wiring, and enabling the installation to take place during operating
hours. This is interesting as it helps to open up the small building and retrofit market to BMS
(see Verdantix Evolving Customer Usage Patterns Fuel BMS Innovations). WEMS claims its
technology can deliver an attractive ROI for sites with energy costs of £7,000 ($11,000)-per year
and above.
7. Demand response solutions provider Limejump. This start-up was founded in 2013
and is a provider of cloud-based software that connects to smart meters and smart
control devices. Limejump looks to enable small and medium sized businesses to take
part in National Grid demand response programmes through a ‘virtual power plant’ –
which aggregates load control by a large number of smaller firms. It also provides
predictive analytics and peak-price alerts to help organizations adapt electricity usage
patterns, to avoid price peaks such as Triad charges, or reduce Distribution Network
Operators ‘Red Zone’ costs.
Verdantix take: Limejump is pioneering technology to support the participation of smaller sized
businesses in National Grid demand response programmes. This is a break from previous
practices as, to date, large energy consumers have had the most significant presence in National
Grid demand response programmes. So far, Limejump has avoided the troubles experienced by
French start-up Voltalis (see Verdantix Voltalis Disrupts French Electricity Market). Limejump
is also developing technology to automatically control equipment based on signals from the
National Grid, which may help to streamline participation for smaller organizations, where it is
less likely that there are individuals dedicated to managing energy programmes on a daily basis.

8. Building energy monitoring and weather analytics software firm Pilio. This is an
online energy management software firm which was spun out from the University of
Oxford in 2011. Its software assesses energy consumption relative to weather conditions
to help energy managers normalize energy use and identify spikes in consumption that
are not linked to temperature changes. It is currently providing energy efficiency
reporting for Premier Inn hotel estates and it has provided online energy analysis across
IQ Partnership student accommodation properties. Its web-based solution makes it
applicable for smaller sized businesses – it is selling directly to SMEs and has assisted
Total Gas & Power in identifying an energy management solution for its SME
customers.
Verdantix take: As weather can have a big impact on energy consumption in buildings – it must
be taken into account when comparing the energy performance of a portfolio of similar facilities.
Weather-normalized energy consumption data are particularly useful for energy managers
looking to benchmark energy performance across a wide portfolio of sites, assess the effectiveness
of energy efficiency interventions and track the progress of energy reduction goals. The practice of
weather normalization with degree day data is now starting to catch on in mainstream enterprise
energy management software.
9. Energy management software provider DEXMA. Founded in 2007, DEXMA provides
energy management software to energy services firms and end customers in commercial
and industrial sectors. The firm’s vision is to provide a flexible out-of-the-box platform
that can be configured to meet the needs of global firms across a number of sectors.
DEXMA has developed an app marketplace where customers and partners can build
apps to increase and further customize the software’s capabilities. DEXMA has seen its
partner and customer base expand, with over 450 end customers and over 150 partners
across 24 countries now using the platform (see Verdantix Green Quadrant Building
Energy Management Software (Global)).
Verdantix take: Over the past few years, energy services and utilities firms have been adopting
white label energy management software to provide data-driven client propositions. DEXMA’s
platform and selection of energy apps fits with the trend – as it offers a very flexible solution that
enables partners to configure it around their needs without a high level of spend on updating the
platform. Verdantix expects the trend of software partnerships to continue throughout 2016 as
energy services firms and power utilities look for cost-effective options for developing software
capabilities (see Verdantix Energy Services Firms Need The Right Software Partnerships).
