Page 1: Development

After creating wire sculptures depicting Jesus’

face I decided to create a drawing based on

the pieces. I chose to complete the drawings

using my left hand as the wire is really bent

and crinkled and because I do not have as

much control over my left hand I thought the

lines that I would make would accurately

portray the texture of the wire.

After completing the drawings I noticed that

the work reminded me of that of Gary Hume.

He is an English artist who came to

prominence in the early 90’s as part of the

‘Young British Artists’. He has a wide range of

work but what I found similar to my own were his line drawings. For example; these pieces

both titled Water Painting (1999).

His paintings are easy on the eye, slick, shiny gloss paint on aluminium panels, they create a

calming atmosphere which is helped by the poses of the figures he draws; they look very

calm and carefree.

I admire Gary Hume’s work his drawings have an interesting layered effect which make

them quite surreal. I’d like to try and recreate his technique and produce some larger

drawings in response to his ‘Water Paintings’ series as his work are quite large and my

previous drawing was only A4.

This drawing is on an A1 size paper. To

produce it I put used my second wire

study and projected it onto paper using

a visualizer and then drew the lines. I

did this in response to the work of Gary

Hume as his work is quite large.

I also drew this image inspired by his Water

Paintings series as the layered technique he used

in those looked very interesting. To create this

piece I put my third wire study under the

visualizer and projected it onto paper and after I

drew it I would move the figure and then draw

over the previous drawing and so on. I moved

the wire three times and drew each time to get

this final result.
