Thinking through initial thoughts on Holiploigy
A discussion
Who are we and what do we do?
Nigel Tubbs ‘Philosophy of the Teacher’
Teacher as……
…..master?
……servant?
Are there other analogies in the spectrum between?
Andragogy
‘the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept’
Etymology: ancient greek for ‘leading a boy’
Pedagogy
‘is the theory and practice of education of adults’
Etymology: ancient greek for ‘leading a man’
Heutagogy
‘is the theory and practice of self-determined learning’
Etymology: ancient greek for ‘leading oneself’
In relatively simple terms how would you describe and define your role as a teacher in HE?
Building a basic model of what I believe we might be trying to achieve

time • Need more than ‘learnification’ (Biesta)
• The complexity and soft power of the teacher to help students to ‘encounter’ the world.
• Moving away from ‘egological’ approaches (Biesta)
• Leads to a complex process – a series of interpenetrating complex adaptive systems
• The teacher becomes central to the process – but in different ways at different times
• An emergent/evolutionary series of flows/processes
To gain expertise, what structures and cultures do we need around us?

Developing holistically to meet the challenge of teaching – some initial conceptualisations (2)
So how do we encompass this complex set of ideas?
The teacher becomes…..
…a navigator – sometimes playing a more central role to explain, introduce and lead debate. Other times takes a more passive role, allowing students to explore. BUT always helping students to understand how to become navigators themselves
…an individual who is able to deal with the complexities (of curriculum, teaching, subject matter, etc) in a holistic way
Hence, it becomes a process focusing on a holistic/complex (holi) flow of processes which support student learning, through an approach akin to navigation (ploigy)
Hence, HOLIPLOIGY
Therefore, a working definition of holiploigy would be:
‘Holiploigy is the emergent enactment of the process of educative experiences. It is based on the complex interaction of curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment as enacted by tutors and students, mediated through philosophies, contexts and research. These emergent processes foster the growth of expertise in both tutors and students.’
So what?Developing holiploigic expertise through practice – an initial framework
