Carl G. (Anton) PeddinghausChief Executive Officer | Peddinghaus Corporation

Peddinghaus Corporation makes approximately 20 machine deliveries each month. Of those, 16 of the installations go perfectly, 3 take a little longer than expected, and 1 unexpectedly exceeds both budgets. These setbacks affect you just as much, if not more than they affect Peddinghaus. I believe that with a little improvement in communication, we can eliminate most common installation frustrations.

I would love to take this opportunity to provide some useful tips on how to ensure a successful installation and quicker return on your investment.

Practice makes perfect. Before the machine arrives, send your future machine operator to Peddinghaus in Bradley for training. It’s FREE!!

Remember, walk before you run.when purchasing Peddinghaus CNC machinery for the first time, it is best not to schedule a large work load until the system is in operation and your operators are comfortable.

veterans, don’t make a rookie mistake. If your machine operator leaves the company, send the new operator to Peddinghaus for training. Again, It’s FREE!

Help us, help you. Your machine should be internet accessible. Every Peddinghaus machine is shipped with a webcam and a remotely accessible control unit. These internet-dependent resources help our service department locate and fix problems from right here in Bradley.

You must maintain to sustain.Peddinghaus machines are built to last. After installation it is important to establish a regular maintenance schedule to help guarantee that your machinery reaches its full potential.

As you know, Peddinghaus puts the customer first. In addition to our ‘round-the-clock service department, we have a team of pre-installation specialists here to assist you with any questions you may have regarding the installation and start-up of your new machinery.

I hope you will find this information beneficial to you. with a little teamwork, we can reach our goal of 100% customer satisfaction.

Morgan City, Louisiana is a quiet and unassuming town in the Southeastern USA. Locals gather annually to celebrate the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival at the heart of the city and, for those unfamiliar with the area, this combination can seem unusual. A quick glance at a map illustrates that this small town is located on the Intracoastal waterway and the Atchafalaya River which connects local industry to the Gulf of Mexico, where much of the USA’s shrimping and offshore oil exploration take place.

IN FOCUS | New Industries

IN THIS PHOTO: Bill New, Owner and President of New Industries with the very first HSFdB-C

New Industries, a pressure vessel manufacturer and specialty fabricator, is among the many local firms that thrive on deep water oil and gas production in the Gulf. Bill New, Founder and President of the firm, made Morgan City his home after a stint with Mobil Oil Company. Using the tools he learned as an engineer with the oil giant, Bill’s firm has grown since its inception with a handful of employees in 1986 to over 170 employees today.

Underwater Pipelines - a Different type of FabricationThe underwater pipeline industry requires fabrication that is vastly different from the typical “beam and column” structural work we see above sea level. Much of the fabrication done by New Industries is installed under water in depths where humans are not able to work to install or service the equipment. Pipelines require state-of-the-art insulations and coatings to survive in this environment and installation must be accomplished by ROv (remotely operated vehicle). This means no bolted connections and a lot of plate.

The limited population of the Morgan City area, paired with the amount of industry in the

region, provides challenges to New Industries when it comes to sourcing qualified labor. Because of this, automation is critical for the firm to remain competitive. Burn tables have long been instrumental within the New Industries production facility for cutting large sheets of plate for pressure vessels. when it came to smaller components cut from heavy plate, New Industries needed a better solution for handling the plate and the parts for the complex underwater projects.

the Peddinghaus Solution for Plate ProcessingIn 1997, Bill and his team discovered a different way to process plate. Upon seeing the Peddinghaus FPB-1800 plate punching and cutting machine in action, Bill was impressed. “The plate could be loaded on the machine, pulled into the machine, processed, and have finished parts dropped off the other end. Our gantry style machines are great for the larger pressure vessel parts, but the Peddinghaus machines are perfect for smaller parts. There is no machine faster when it comes to processing small parts from heavy plate especially if the parts have holes in them.” Convinced of the concept, Bill purchased his first Peddinghaus

plate processor and operated it until 2011. “when we saw the latest machines from Peddinghaus that could process thicker plate [up to 3”/75 mm] and could drill smaller holes, we knew we needed that additional capacity and flexibility.” New Industries invested in an HSFdB-2500/B to replace their original Peddinghaus plate processor, but always wanted it to do just a little more in terms of its cutting capabilities. “we love our HSFdB-2500/B. It immediately allowed us to do many things that our FPB-1800 could never do. It can drill, mill, tap, countersink and more, but I told Peddinghaus from the start that it needed a beveling torch. In our industry, we need a bevel for weld preparation on a lot of our plate parts. It didn’t take long for Peddinghaus to come up with the new bevel machine. As soon as I saw it was available, I knew I had to be the first to have one!”

the First ever HSFDB with Bevel technologyBill and his team installed the all new HSFdB-2500/C plate processor with integrated bevel torch and hard stamp part marking system shortly after witnessing it at the FABTECH exhibition in Chicago. In the short

7

time since its commissioning, the machine has already begun to yield results. Bill elaborates, “Before this machine, all beveling had to be done manually, either by hand or using a track torch. This meant that we had two or three fitters working several shifts to accomplish what we now do on the machine. In addition, those fitters had to be some of our most talented craftsman. The machine bevels are more accurate and consistent which saves us a lot of welding time and our best fitters can go back to doing what they do best - fitting!”

Beyond bevel cutting, the new marking system has proven to be a great benefit to New Industries due to the need for full traceability when it comes to materials. “with the new stamping unit, I don’t have someone writing a part number on the part with a paint pen. This means that we don’t have to worry about numbers being transposed or unreadable like we used to,” states Bill.

with such a large facility and scope of work, Bill and his team are familiar with many different types of machinery. They chose Peddinghaus due to the technology and longevity of the equipment. “I like big, strong, robust machinery. Peddinghaus makes a strong machine and they service it. At the end of the day, your machine doesn’t make you money if it’s not running. That is why I chose Peddinghaus,” concludes Bill.

...your machine doesn’t make you money if it’s not running. that is why i chose Peddinghaus.

Breaking New Ground in Brazil

established in 1980, Codeme has developed a reputation for being the largest structural steel fabricator in Brazil. Capable of processing an incredible 4,500 tons of steel per month, annual production comes to an impressive 54,000 tons per year from their several factories throughout Brazil. With work ranging from commercial buildings such as shopping centers and apartment complexes to heavy industrial applications, Codeme has pioneered many facets of the structural steel industry within Brazil.

Four Students with New ideasCodeme was originally founded by four students: Ademar de Carvalho Barbosa Filho, Luis Tomé de Rezende, Ricardo Araújo Lanna and Roberval José Pimenta in Belo Horizonte. These four students got their big break when it came to the fabrication of a simple gas station canopy. Previously, gas station canopies were welded onsite, taking weeks to install. By introducing the concept of bolted connections, the team at Codeme reduced the amount of time to install the canopy to as little as two days, and mitigated the dangers of welding structural steel in the vicinity of fuel resources.

Not only did these first canopies boast faster installations and safer working environments, but also proved to stand the test of time with their new robust design. Shortly after the initial installation of the innovative bolted design, others in the area took notice of the design and came to Codeme for help. This was the spark that started Codeme. Today, Codeme fabricates massive distribution centers, commercial structures and impressive industrial complexes throughout Latin America.

Pioneering Productivity in BrazilAs Codeme’s business grew, the need to increase productivity became apparent. The decision to automate was a critical one

that can be credited to much of the growth Codeme has experienced. The initial investment in Peddinghaus machinery in 1996 helped Codeme take their business to the next level. A second investment in Peddinghaus machinery in 2006 furnished an entirely new facility just outside of Belo Horizonte as the firm expanded. Today, Codeme continues to invest in Peddinghaus. Their latest acquisition includes a Peddiwriter CNC layout marking machine, and BdL-1250/9d heavy duty carbide drill line installed in late 2013.

Production director dalton Utsch describes the impact of the all new BdL-1250/9d drill line, “we needed to increase our production of drilled profiles, and we chose to purchase the BdL-1250/9d drill line. when we purchased the new machine, we saw our production increase from 140 profiles per day to 180 profiles per day. The performance of the equipment has been fantastic thus far. This faster production means lower cost for us.”

dalton continues to describe the advancements in productivity when it came to the Peddiwriter CNC layout marking machine, “Just like many other places, we have always had a problem hiring skilled fitters for the layout of welded connections. This machine does the work of these fitters. Even when you are able to locate and hire fitters, no matter how good your people are they make mistakes. That is human nature. Unfortunately, mistakes during the layout process means very expensive rework to sections. This undoing and redoing of work can get very costly, and the Peddiwriter prevents this. On top of increasing accuracy, the machine has been very productive. we can process 100 to 120 pieces per shift on the Peddiwriter with confidence. This machine has allowed us to reduce the number of fitters we needed by about 20% - this means that we don’t have to struggle to find this skilled labor that isn’t available right now.”

Peddinghaus and Codeme - Partners for GrowthPeddinghaus’ first experience with Codeme in 1996 laid the groundwork for a longstanding relationship. Ademar de Carvalho Barbosa Filho, President of Codeme states, “when we first purchased Peddinghaus, the most important thing was that they were honest about the machinery. The machines did what we were told they would do. The machines are built very robust, and in fact our original machines from 1996 are still in operation today. what makes the biggest difference with Peddinghaus is their people, and that with Peddinghaus what is spoken is honored. with Peddinghaus we know that what we agree to is honored and we don’t need contracts. we are very satisfied with our relationship with Peddinghaus.”

Automating bevel cutting technology offers fabricators increased efficiency for processing plate. Peddinghaus proudly developed a true CNC plate processor to offer an optional bevel cutting system with the HSFdB-C.

why automate your bevel cutting? Take a look at the advantages of using a unique beveling torch versus manual processing including:

•Reducedlabor-manualbevelingviatracktorch or by hand must typically be done by a skilled fitter due to the knowledge required to properly mix cutting gasses.

•Higherqualitycuts-manuallycutbevelsare not cut at the same level of quality as automated cuts.

•More consistent bevel angles - CNCprecision will yield a more consistent cut angle for beveling when compared to manual methods.

•Faster welding - Due to the higherquality of parts coming off the machine in contrast to manually cut parts, welding is expedited due to the reduced prep work required, and welds are of a higher quality.

Peddinghaus’ HSFdB-C offers a bevel torch assembly that maintains positions for both a plasma torch and oxy-fuel torch for versatile plate processing. Experience the advantages of both bevel cutting options available:

•High-speedplasmacutting–260or400amp available

•Oxy-Fuel torch accommodates variouscutting gases

PINCH POINT: New Safety Guarding and design for CNC Layout Marking Systems

Practicing fab shop safety is a key factor to ensuring employees’ protection during equipment operation. Peddinghaus provides added safety measures with every machine. the latest feature of the PeddiWriter standalone layout marking system includes new safety guarding.

the new guarding aids in protecting employees while the PeddiWriter is in operation. Boasting a modern design, the metallic silver guarding continues to uphold the previous protection capabilities of its predecessor, but now with increased visibility to the inside of the machine.

the PeddiWriter will continue to provide interlocking keys as a safety feature. this restricts operators from opening the main access door of the machine if the control is powered on. likewise, in order to operate the control, the main access door must first be locked.

look for select Peddinghaus machines to follow in the PeddiWriter’s footsteps. Future models will continue the distinguished ‘Peddi’ green for the machine structure, orange accents identifying electrical and moving parts, and the metallic silver for the guarding.

ISM H. SCHULZCNC Success: One Machine at a Time

with 30 plus years of service in the structural steel industry, ISM H. Schulz GmbH Stahlbau has evolved into a trusted name that reflects their business philosophy ‘living steel, delivering quality’. Built by founder Hermann Schulz in 1981, ISM (meaning Industrial Steel-Construction Mounting), provides a range of customer services including development, planning, manufacturing and assembly for steel construction. As the sole employee, Hermann began the first years of steel production from a local barn. 2009 brought along company transformation when Hermann’s son, Patrick Schulz, took the reins as the new Managing director for ISM. with his newly appointed position and a 2,000 square meter (22,000 square feet) production facility, Patrick set his sights on the company’s future: expansion and increased automation.

New Generation, New VisionAs Managing director, Patrick applied his background in business administration and finance to ISM’s production needs. wanting to expand their range of services in order to remain competitive, Patrick knew that ISM needed to invest. The cost of outsourcing structural plate parts was increasing and timely delivery was becoming difficult. ISM’s ability to quickly meet their customers’ needs was being compromised. Patrick decided the best business solution for ISM was to produce plate parts internally and he began to research the tools for adding automation. Patrick looked to Peddinghaus.

Solving their Plate Problems“we knew about Peddinghaus’ first class quality because of our previous CNC investments,” Patrick explained. “Our Peddinghaus punch is about 40 years old and the used TdK drill line was 20 years old; both were durable and reliable.”

ISM H. SCHULZ

19

20

Utilizing Patrick’s financial skills, ISM searched for a long-term investment that would increase production while keeping overhead costs low. Patrick and his team at ISM were confident that the HSFdB plate processor from Peddinghaus was the perfect piece of equipment to produce their plate.

Seeing CNC ResultsFinding instant success with their newly installed HSFdB, ISM boasts the increased speed and higher productivity. Noting the precision of the machine and error rate decrease, ISM was convinced they made the

right choice. “The time saving is enormous,” Patrick stated. “The new machine not only cuts plate in high speed but also enables drilling, milling and more.”

Patrick calculated additional CNC investments for increased productivity by replacing their aging TdK drill line for a complete new drill and saw system. “For ISM, it was more reasonable to invest a little more money and purchase complete new system,” Patrick stated. Peddinghaus’ high-speed drill lines in tandem with structural band saws captured ISM’s attention.

Counting on a trusted Partner“Peddinghaus was with ISM from the very beginning,” said Patrick. “Quality, longevity and great service are the reasons we continue to invest with Peddinghaus. Their customer service is the best in the industry. If we have any issues, the service team is available at once. The following day a technician is on-site if necessary. That is great service!” ISM credits Pascal Peters, Peddinghaus’ Regional Sales Manager, for his knowledge regarding the space saving system layout. ISM integrated a PCd-C “Advantage-2” drill line

with a tandem dG-1100 band saw and CNC material handling into their fabrication firm.

Following their system installation, ISM experienced increased efficiency, higher tonnage and reduced labor costs. Patrick was impressed with the “seamless” flow of material from one machine to the next without operator intervention. “Our operators are extremely proud to run the Peddinghaus machines,” Patrick explained. “After two to three weeks, they could operate the machines flawlessly.”

‘living Steel, Delivering Quality’ for the FuturePatrick is building his ISM vision one piece of CNC technology at a time. By utilizing his business background and recognizing ISM’s needs, Patrick was able to add the HSFdB plate processor and the complete drill/saw system with CNC material handling. ISM can quickly and efficiently complete building production halls, produce fittings for shipping containers, process industrial railings, industrial stairs, and expand into new markets with the precise tools for each.

The future is looking promising for Patrick and the team at ISM. “Let me take a look into my crystal ball,” Patrick laughed. “I can’t predict the future but I know we are definitely well-prepared with our Peddinghaus machines.”

MaRC’S kitCHeN | what’s On thE grill at thE PEddiCafÉ?

SMOKEd CHICKEN wINGS

Chicken wings are a classic appetizer. today, wings are not just reserved for big game days or a special summer picnic, but are in high demand and listed as an appetizer on many menus. Most people think of fat when they think of chicken wings, but Peddicafe offers a healthy smoked grilled chicken wing to satisfy both our employees’ diet and their palate.

Grilling is a healthier way to prepare chicken wings because it does not add fat like traditional deep-frying. the grill gives the skin a crispy texture. Because of their small size, wings cook quickly and rarely develop the smoky flavor of the barbecue. a secret cooking tip to infuse chicken wings and maximize real barbecue flavor is to smoke the wings. Use low heat to provide a longer cooking time (more time to get that smoky flavor) using hardwood chips.

another cooking tip to impart flavor is to brine the chicken wings in a salt and sugar solution. the brine increases the moisture (juiciness) and increases the tenderness of the meat. You can kick the flavor profile up a notch by adding red pepper flakes, bay leaf, fresh thyme, cracked black pepper, garlic, ginger, or other herbs like oregano to the brine. the spices and herbs you add will reflect the flavor profile of the wings you serve--spicy hot, italian, asian, BBQ.

the brine causes a chemical reaction during the cooking process creating a barrier on the exterior of the chicken wing. this process traps the moisture inside, but still allows the outside of the wing to become crisp.

• Make brine • Soak wings in brine for 90 minutes • Remove wings from brine • Pat wings dry *** IMPORTANT exterior of wings

must be dry before placing on grill/smoker• Cook wings to internal temp of 155˚F (68˚C) • Remove & toss wings in your favorite sauce • Peddicafé Wings are tossed in traditional Buffalo

Sauce or a Smoked Jalapeno Barbeque Sauce

Peddicafé offers all the deliciousness of traditional chicken wings but with a healthier twist. Our grilled/smoked wings mean no deep-frying, less calories, and less fat. You can remove additional calories and fat by using homemade healthy sauces free of preservatives with no or low sugar and low sodium, but with all the absolutely amazing taste. Cooking wings the Peddicafé way is easy, healthy, and tasty. Get Grilling!!!

Tool longevity is important to reduce consumable costs and remain efficient in the structural steel industry. By listening to your CNC drill line and seeing the signs from processed drill chips, operators can recognize the differences between proper versus improper drill speeds and feeds.

The most common tooling types in the market today involve the use of high-speed steel (HSS) or solid carbide tooling for your CNC drill line. The following drill chip images depict different speeds and feeds from a CNC beam drill line to aid in determining what your drill chips are telling you.

The thought popped in my mind while I was on vacation…enjoying some “windshield time” while driving across the American heartland with my wife.

“…Lyle Menke has been with Peddinghaus Corporation for almost 33 years; wow, where did the time go…?”

Much can Happen in 33 YearsA lot has happened in the world – and atPeddinghaus in those 33 years. OK, Old Timers, let’s play a quick game of “Remember when”:1978- Peddinghaus purchased facility in Bradley, IL and started manufacturing immediately

1981- Yours truly joined the Peddinghaus team, and started my career

1987- Our engineers introduced automated coping of structural members with ABCM-1000

1991- Pioneered combined punching/cutting plate processingsystem–Thefirstever!

1997- Opened new 100,000 sq ft (9,250 sq meter)manufacturing facility in Andrews, South Carolina - USA

2001- Entry of Fourth Generation of family management: Carl G. (Anton) Peddinghaus

2005- Next generation of Peddinghaus Structural drills: Advantage 1; Ocean Avenger

2009- HSFdB plate processing developed: drilling, tapping, marking, cutting–doesitall

2010- development of Raptor software for superior operation/integration

2011- The Peddiwriter layout marking machine revolutionizes shop processing

2013- PeddiCafe, new 210,000 mfg building, PeddiCenter office structure

Oktoberfests, Building Expansions, NASCC & Fabtech trade shows, new faces/old faces…it all becomes a blur of happy memories.

Two Items that Sustain a Career

Yep, technology has changed dramatically in my 33 years…I still remember rotary phones, telex machines and main frame computers. (Heck, I even remember owning a leisure suit - it was lime green).

In my 33 years, the one edict that I always understood in my Peddinghaus career is simply this: Peddinghaus always takes care of our customers. Granted, it is not always easy, butonethingisforcertain–weneverstop trying. Our customer care is what separates us from the others.

One other item always stands out in my mind: Our engineers always seek the latest technology for new equipment design. Our people understand the market, and the requirements for processing structural steel or heavy plate. we all travel extensively – to every corner of the world tomeet ourcustomers and understand their needs.

Depth of an Organization: Peddinghaus Has it NailedAs Chief Spiritual Officer, the best part of my job now is mentoring the ‘youngsters’ in our organization. I love the opportunity to “talk Peddinghaus” with our people.

we discuss our customers, our industry, our community, and what it means to work for a family owned company that competes in a global market. we are headquartered in Bradley, IL, and that Midwestern USA work ethic & set of values shines in all our people.

Our employees understand the significance of each of our customers and the industries in which we participate.

Can’t Wait for Year 34!Peddinghaus has come a long way since my career started 33 years ago…it has certainly been rewarding and I’ve enjoyed myself more than any one should be entitled to.

As I continue my “windshield time” down the road, my thoughts tend to focus on one indelible reflection: my Peddinghaus career is truly one “Beautiful Ride”!
