ON THE 20TH CENTURY is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

The University of Michigan forbids smoking in any part of The Power Center for the Performing Arts

The use of photographic or audio equipment is prohibited.

Director's Notes Have you ever taken a journey on a train? It's exciting, romantic, adventurous, and ... claustrophobic! Consider being on a train with that special someone only to discover that next door is an ex-lover intent on seeing you. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. YOU ARE TRAPPED! But ... will old love win over new love? Will you go mad ... or merely kill each other? "You get on at the beginning. You get off at the end." What happens in between is our show. Enjoy!

About The Staff LEE BURKHARDT (Assistant to the Director), having garnered a wealth of information acting in this capacity for SWEET CHARITY, could not wait to join (along with several others) the crew of another show directed by jim Posante. Although not the initial drawing card to the world of theatre, being Assistant to the Director is a pleasant and enjoyable break from her other interests at AACT as Vice President for Administration and Costume Superintendent. During those hours not spent at AACT, Lee serves as Administrative Assistant to the Chair of the UofM Chemistry Department.

WAYNE BURKHARDT (Set Builder) joined Civic Theatre in 1988 and became the scene shop manager soon after. He has worked on the behind-the-scenes production of a majority of the plays since then. Wayne has also been involved in producing plays, in many backstage crew activities, in the building of sets, and has done a few walk-on parts, but his real interest is in getting the production technically ready to go. Wayne was the liaison for the renovation of our wonderful new theatre building. He presently holds the position of Building Manager, still manages the scene shop, is chair for special effects, serves as Vice President for Production, participates on a number of committees, and continues to assist in the renovation projects. He calls it a busy and rewarding way to spend one•s time. Come and join him and you can have fun too!

BEN COHEN (Musical Director) is a native of the Boston area; he came to Ann Arbor in the fall of '91 after conducting, teaching and composing in Cambridge, MA. Ben has just received his Master's degree in Choral Conducting from the UofM. 20TH CENTURY marks his second production with AACT; he was choral director and vocal coach for SWEENEY TODD last spring. Other Ann Arbor credits include musical director for TRIAL BY JURY and UMGASS' RUDDIGORE, and composer and musical director for Young People's Theatre's ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. His CASEY AT THE BAT, an original baseball opera seria, was just performed by Young People's Theatre at AACT's Old Friends Theatre.

CYNTHIA A. DUNITZ (Stage Manager) has previously designed lights and stage managed for Common Ground Theater Company, and Whitley Setrakian & People Dancing, and has coordinated the stage production for the Annie Awards for the last two years. She was the stage manager for AACT's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and SWEET CHARITY. Cynthia enjoys basketball, needlepoint, musical theatre, folk music, and dogs (not necessarily in that order!)

BARRY LaRUE (Lighting Designer) is the Senior House Technican for University productions. He manages the backstage at both Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre and the Power Center for the Performing Arts. Barry is an avid historic preservationist in his hometown of Ypsilanti. He serves on the Ypsilanti Historic District Commission and recently ran for re-election to his City Council seat. He has designed lights for AACT's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and sound for AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', SWEET CHARITY, and SWEENEY TODD.

JIM POSANTE (Director/Choreographer! has been directing for a number of years in this area. His first show for AACT was the 1976 production of OKLAHOMA! Since then, he has been involved in every season either onstage or behind the scenes. Some of his AACT credits include FOLLIES, CAROUSEL, THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, CHICAGO, HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES, DROOD, PIPPIN, GUYS AND DOLLS, SWEET CHARITY, and last season's award winning SWEENEY TODD. His most recent credits include director for GREASE for Greenhills School (where he has directed for 17 years), POSSESSED, THE DRACULA MUSICAL at the Purple Rose in Chelsea, and choreographer for Encore!, a professional vocal ensemble. He is currently writing a play with Peter Knox and Linda Kendall to be produced at the Performance Network in '94, and this summer will be directing and choreographing OKLAHOMA! and SWEET CHARITY for the Thunder Bay Theatre Company in Alpena.

CHRISTINE REISING (Set and Costume Designer) is an Associate Professor of Art at Siena Heights College where she teaches drawing and painting. Chris has been active in AACT for the last 8 years. She was last year's recipient of AACT's Costume Design award for her work on SWEET CHARITY. Other productions include SECRET GARDEN, ELEEMOSYNARY, THE PUBLIC, TOMFOOLERY, and ISABELLA THREE SHIPS AND A SHYSTER.

ROSEMARIE ROTHE (Makeup Designer) enjoys making people look different, for better or for worse. This is her 1Oth year doing make-up for AACT and the 1Oth show she has been make-up designer; the first being THE FOREIGNER and the most recent MORNING'S AT SEVEN. Rosemarie is often asked, "How did you get involved in doing make-up for AACT?" Her answer, she showed up at AACT's office 10 years ago and said she wanted to get involved in theater. Here she is 10 years later, still involved and loving (almost) every minute of it!

ANN M. WALASKAY (Lighting Designer) has been working with various Ann Arbor and Detroit theatres for the past couple of years, most recently with the Dreamlight Theatre Company. This is her first attempt at lighting design, but "exploring new worlds, even ones you create, is good for the soul." Ann loves to travel, play with her nephews and niece, and tamper with her computer•s autoexec commands.

BETTY WAMBACK (Props Chair) has worked with many productions since joining AACT. She has done props for MAME, I'M NOT RAPPAPORT, DIARY OF ANNE FRANK to name a few. Currently she is the season chair for properties and is always looking for people to work backstage and enjoy the madness back there!

WE 1VE GOTTA PICK PICKA,OCKITA POCKET OR TWO

In 1991, Ann Arbor Civtc Theatre purchased a building on Platt Road and has completely renovated it to create a marvellous 26,000 square foot performing arts complex that can be used not only by Civic Theatre, but also by other regional arts groups. The facility includes: a 175 seat theater; three rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, costume and scene shops; storage areas; common areas and business offices. Community interest in this project continues to be strong and subscription sales to Second Stage shows, performed in the new theater, have rocketed.

Our fund raising goal to support the purchase and renovation of our new home is $1.25 million. What's really exciting is that $979,494 is already committed, which means that we have only $270,506 left to raise.

I invite you to become a part of this important project by pledging a gift. If you have already made your gift to our project and would like to make an

~~POWER SERIES 93/94 OPERA • DRAMA • DANCE • MUSICAL THEATRE

Enjoy four quality productions in one convenient package!

-11 OPERA: Dialogues des Carmelites Set during the French Revoluuon, this powerful and melodic opera, composed by Francis Poulenc, is based on the true account of sixteen Carmelite nuns who were ordered to either cease their meditations or be executed. This production is sung in French with English supertitles. Opera Theatre • University Symphony Orchestra • November 11 • 14

-11 DRAMA: The Butterfingers Angel, Mary & Joseph, Herod the Nut, & the Slaughter of 12 Hit Carols in a Pear Tree This production, an imaginative -yet poignant- re-telling of the Christmas story, is very humorous without ever losing the original significance of the occasion. A must-see for everyone written by William Gibson, who also wrote Two for the Seesaw and The Miracle Worker. Department of Theatre and Drama • December 2 . 5

-11 DANCE: In the Spirit of Diaghilev The University Dance Company with the University Symphony Orchestra present a collage of dances as a tribute to Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev, the great impresario of the Ballets Russes. A highlight of this production is the remounting of choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky's rarely perfonncd ballet, Afternoon of a Faun, set to the music of Claude Debussy. University Dance Company • University Symphony Orchestra • February 3 • 6

-11 MUSICAL THEATRE: The Most Happy Fella The artistic team that brought you last season's sell-out hit, Brigadoon, returns to present Frank Loesser's landmark musical drama about an immigrant vineyard owner, a much younger waitress, and the unexpected, magical, and sometimes troubled love between them.
