Take a look at your room and decide how it can be improved. Does it need a new coat of paint, new curtains, a colorful rug, or throw pillows?

• Discuss your plans with your parents or guardian. Decide how much money you can afford to spend. Remember that many changes can be made inexpensively. Consider sewing your own curtains and throw pillows or dying the ones you already have. Check the thrift store for bargain finds that will compliment the room and show off your style.

• Take an inventory of what you already have in your room. Decide how it can be used in your plans. Before you decide to toss anything out, see if there is a way to redo old items, turning rejects into resources.

• Ask your parent or guardian if you can look in the attic or garage. You might find an old desk, chair lamp or table that can be refinished or painted and used in your room.

Compare the costs for painting and wallpapering your room.

Select one kind of paint and one kind of wallpaper you would like to use in your room and determine the price of each. Measure the walls, including the height of each.

Once you have the measurements, Home Depot, Lowe’s and most paint stores have computer programs to help determine the amount of supplies needed for a project. Use one of these programs or ask a salesperson to help calculate the supplies you need for each.

Figure out the total cost for each method by multiplying the number of rolls of wallpaper or gallons of paint times the cost of each.

Which is more economical?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of wallpaper?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of paint?

1. LEARN ABOUT DECORATING.

Choose one of the following and learn as much as you can:

• Visit a large furniture store. Look at all of the different styles of furniture and note those that appeal to you. Ask a salesperson to explain the styles of furniture and what makes each one distinct.

What style would you pick for your bedroom or home? Why?

Compare prices of different pieces of furniture. What factors affect prices?

• Visit a carpet store. Select a carpet style and color for your bedroom. Figure out how many yards of carpeting it would take to cover your bedroom floor. Figure out the total cost. If carpeting is too expensive, what might you do as an alternative?

• Attend a demonstration of painting and wallpapering. These are not hard to learn and do. You will find you can save money if you know how to redecorate.

2. CHOOSE THREE BASIC COLORS TO USE IN DECORATING.

For each basic color, coordinate a sample of carpet, wallpaper, paint, and fabric. Mount the samples on tagboard or cardboard. Show the display to your troop and explain the reasons for your choices.

3. USE A COMPUTER PROGRAM OR PHONE APP TO MAKE A VIRTUAL DESIGN OF YOUR ROOM.

Try one of the websites below or use another one of your choice.

Better Homes and Gardens (requires registration) www.bhg.com/decorating/arrange a-room/

Lowe’s Virtual Room Designer www.lowes.com/cd_virtual+room+designer _189310537_

4. MAKE A THROW PILLOW FOR YOUR BED.

Fabric stores, craft magazines and Pinterest have ideas and patterns.

5. RESEARCH STYLES OF FURNISHINGS.

Add photos, clippings or sketches of at least three styles you like to your designer notebook (Task 2). If you cannot visit a furniture store in person, go online to cyber browse.

Some sites you might like are:

www.smithe.com

www.ethanallen.com

www.ikea.com/us/

6. A ROOM SHOULD HAVE ACCESSORIES AND WALL HANGINGS THAT MAKE IT YOUR OWN.

If you like animals, your room could reflect this. If shell collecting is your hobby, your shells may be incorporated into the décor. How you choose to use these signatures of your personality will take some creative thinking. Do one of the following:

• Choose a favorite poster, painting, or drawing you’ve done to frame and hang. Most communities have a shop where

you can learn how to mat and frame pictures. Or ask the art teacher at your school to show you how to mat a picture with poster board or mat board. This may be done without spending a lot of money.

• Make a wall decoration using fabric and thread or yarn. This could be a weaving, a crewel, needlepoint, or cross stitch embroidery picture. Perhaps you would like to create your own design on felt or burlap.

• Make a collection of hobby items or favorite things such as shells, stamps, dolls, rocks, or gum wrappers and find a creative way to display them in your room. They could be hung in a frame, a shadow box, or displayed in some other way. Show your display to your troop.

1. YOUR BEDROOM SHOULD BE A SAFE HAVEN, A PLACE TO RELAX AND REST.

A messy, cluttered room leads to frustration, embarrassment and may even be a safety hazard. Reduce stress and chaos by taming the clutter. Come up with a plan to be more organized. Arrange things so they are easy to find and stored safely.

2. DUST MITES ARE MICROSCOPIC EIGHT-LEGGED CREATURES.

They live in your room and can make you sick. They do not bite you, but many people are allergic to them. Declare war on the tiny pests. Here is what you should do:

• Wash your bedding in warm water.

• While the sheets are off the bed, vacuum your mattress.

• Dust the furniture with a damp cloth. Do this before you vacuum.

• Vacuum carpeted floors, curtains, and upholstered furniture.

• Mop any floor space that is not carpeted.

Things That Belong:

3. MELATONIN IS A HORMONE THAT HELPS YOU RELAX AND SLEEP.

Your body makes melatonin when it is dark. The light from the streetlights, a cell phone or computer screen, or a digital clock can interfere with your body’s ability to produce Melatonin, making it difficult for you to get the rest your body needs.

When you design and decorate your bedroom, look for ways to reduce or eliminate light when you sleep. For example you could:

• Eliminate or move electronics that give off light so they are not interfering with your sleep.

• Add curtains or a shade designed to block outside light.

• Look for other ways to block the light. Make sure your parents approve any changes.

“I have been crucified with Christ and

I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

The life I now live in the body, I live by

faith in the Son of God, who loved me

and gave himself for me.”

READ GALATIANS 2:22 (NIV).

When you move into a home or apartment, you will want to decorate it to reflect your personality. You discard things you do not like and replace them with things that please you. You make big changes, like painting walls and replacing the carpet, or simple changes like hanging just the right picture. Adding your own signature touch is what turns a house into a home and says to the world, “I live here. This place belongs to me.”

When you invite Christ to live within you, He may need to change and redesign you into someone who reflects His image and personality. He wants to put His mark on you saying, “I live here. This place belongs to me.”

Think about your life as if it were a home that Jesus is moving into. Imagine He is making a list of things He likes and will want to keep. Next He makes a list of things that do not belong here. Write those things down in the areas to the right.

Take a minute to think about the lists. Are you willing to allow Him to make some changes and replace things that do not please Him?

2. WHAT SORT OF PERSON ARE YOU? KIND? SILLY? FUN? SWEET? TOUGH?

You are at an age when it is very important to decide who you are and how you will design yourself. Proverbs 31:10 – 31 describes a godly woman. Read through this Scripture and underline any character traits you think are important. After you finish, go back and look at the things you marked. Highlight any of the traits that need to be designed into your life.

Pray and ask God to begin the work of redesigning you into the godly woman He wants you to become.
