Fascinating Facts & Figures!

The Queen has TWO birthdays! Her Majesty the Queen celebrates two birthdays each year: her actual birthday

on 21 April and her official birthday on a Saturday in June, this year it’s 11 June.

The Queen, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, was born on 21 April 1926. She was the eldest child of King

George V1 and Queen Elizabeth.

Not only was The Queen born in 1926, but Scotsman John Logie Baird showed off his new invention – television!

English author AA Milne wrote his first book about a cuddly bear called Winnie-The-Pooh and the Lady Haig Poppy

Factory opened in Edinburgh where veterans hand-make poppies for the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal.

Princess Elizabeth took to the throne in 1953, aged 25. One of her first Royal duties as Queen was launching The

Royal Yacht Britannia from the John Brown & Company Shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland.

Britannia proved to be the perfect Royal residence. The Queen used the ship, as a floating Royal palace, hosting

glittering receptions for famous celebrities and world leaders. And, once a year, the Royal Family enjoyed their annual

two week summer holiday sailing around the Western Isles of Scotland.

Wow! Did you know The Royal Yacht Britannia sailed over a MILLION miles during her 44 years in Royal service?

Yum! The Queen’s favourite cakes are a honey & cream sponge, ginger, fruit and a chocolate biscuit cake, that Prince

William chose to be served at his wedding to Kate Middleton. She also loved jam pennies, tiny raspberry jam

sandwiches cut into circles the size of an old English penny. (Source: Former Royal Chef Darren McGrady/Telegraph)

How can this project help the Armed Forces community in Scotland?

Poppyscotland provides life-changing support to our Armed Forces community. We reach out to those who have served, those

still serving, and their families. At times of crisis and need, we offer them vital practical advice, assistance and funding. We run

the Scottish Poppy Appeal in November, which raises just over £2 million each year, but last year we spent £3.7 million on

delivering our wide range of support. This means we need to raise money all year round and we are extremely honoured to be

part of this project. Added to that, we have something very special to celebrate too!

Our very own Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory in Edinburgh is turning 90 years old as well as Her majesty the Queen! Did you know

that this little factory still employs 40 veterans with disabilities who make 5 million poppies and 12,000 wreaths by hand every

year? That means every single poppy that you will see this November has been made there.

After you have completed your cake design why not celebrate with us by hosting a ‘Tea & Toast’ event at your school? You can

get the whole school together for a simple tea and toast break, or go all-out with cakes and a juice ‘toast’. Have a look at our

helpful guide to hosting a tea and toast event for more ideas.

All the best of luck with your cake designs - the veterans at the Factory are looking forward to helping to judge your entries!

COMPETITION NOTES - Closing date for entries is Friday 6 May

The Design a Cake competition is open to Primary School children, in two age groups, P1-3 and P4-7.

Pupils can use any medium of their choice, for example pens, pencils, paint, glue, glitter to create a spectacular cake

design. Pupils are welcome to suggest flavours and ingredients for their cake but the entries will be judged on

appearance only.

The judges will choose a winning design in each category which will be transformed into a stunning cake by Britannia’s

Bakers. The competition winners will be notified by Monday, 16 May.

The two winners will be invited for a VIP Photocall on Friday, 10 June and presented with their winning cake on board

Britannia in Edinburgh. Winners will also receive a goody bag and a family pass for Britannia. (Photos taken will be sent to

the media and may be used on our website and social media.)

The two winners’ classes will also receive a bumper supply of arts & crafts materials, which will be presented in person

by representatives from The Royal Yacht Britannia and Poppyscotland.
