It’s a little hard to believe that we have just passed the halfway mark of Term 4. As crazy as this year has been, it’s fair to say that it has flown by and will be over in the blink of an eye. Our Year 12 VCE students have officially finished their classes and are into the swing of exams, VCAL students are wrapping up their year, the year will come to an end very quickly for our Year 10 and 11 students, and we have had regular visits from our 2021 Foundation students as part of the transitions program in preparation for next year.
NAIDOC Week: This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC week in various ways. Many classes have been completing tasks and activities that aim to develop our understanding of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On Monday, students participated in a virtual reality sessions that put them into dreamtime stories from these cultures. Feedback from students has been very positive and this was a great opportunity to use technology to enhance our understanding of such a vital part of our country’s history.
Transitions: We were very excited to welcome next year’s Foundation students for their second morning session on Wednesday morning. They spent the morning with Mrs. Johnstone continuing to learn the routine of the classroom and familiarising themselves with the College. Other primary students also had to opportunity to move up a grade for the morning to get used to their new classes for 2021. This meant that the Year 6 students spent the morning as Year 7 students, undertaking some interesting Science activities with Mr. Mansbridge. Wednesday 25th of November will be our next transition day. This will be a longer day, with the transition program running up until lunch time. Well done to all involved in the development and delivery of the transitions program. It plays an important role in helping our students feel comfortable and safe as they move through the school.
Unit 3 and 4 Exams: As I mentioned earlier, the Unit 3 and 4 exams are in full swing at the moment. Students sat the English exam on Tuesday and the Biology and Further Maths exams today. There are a number of exams running over the next two weeks, with the exam period concluding for our students on Thursday 26th November. We would like to wish those students undertaking exams all the best. We know that you have worked hard in preparation for this and we are confident that you will do your best.

Once you click on the icon, you will be taken to a page where you are required to create an account. Once your account has been created, you will be able to access the digital ordering system. I believe that Campion Education have assigned a due date of 4th of December for the booklist orders, so please make sure you have completed your order before this date. If you are having difficulty with this process, or your internet access is not sufficient to complete an order, please contact me at the College to discuss options. Well, that’s it for another week. As always, it’s going to be a crazy end to the year. With only five weeks to go, everyone will be flat out trying to get through everything that needs to be done by the end of the year. I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend and comes back firing and ready to work hard next week. Have a great weekend. Simon Brearley Acting Assistant Principal

Remembrance Day
On Wednesday November 11th 2020, students and staff remembered all people who have died in wars. At the 11th hour, students Neave and Hunter delivered a call over our PA system for 2 minutes silence followed by a reading of ‘Remembrance Day’, a poem by Rupert McCall. On this day, junior students attend the ceremony held at Lismore each year. Due to COVID restrictions only our Principal, Caitlyn Fitzgerald was able to attend. Caitlyn laid a wreath at the Lismore cenotaph and placed paper poppies made by students in display at the Lismore and Derrrinallum cenotaphs on behalf of the Derrinallum P-12 College school community.
The Australian soldier grows not old, the flame still lights his eyes Although his body lays to rest, his flag forever flies.
On the green and gold horizon where the wattles sweep and sway,
It flies amongst the gardens and the classrooms of today.
Over ocean streams and backyard dreams, above the sunburnt plain Through harvest yields and sporting fields, in rainbows after rain
It defines a life worth living and a day that must be won For every father’s daughter and for every mother’s son
But more than that, the honour claimed in the fight for the free
The pride of the Australian soldier burns in you and me
When the night is dark and dangerous, with the rumble of the storm We will not forget their sacrifice, the strength of their endeavour For the choices we are gifted with, that flame will burn forever
With a smile that lights the future shinning brightly in our scope
We will stand as one together, we will carry on with hope
But as we go we take the words that rightfully belong I am young and I am worthy, I am brave and I am strong
In the face of any challenge, I will strive to rise above I deserve this opportunity to live, to learn to love
I can truly make a difference, my path is up to me And this is my commitment to be the best that I can be

The Year 5/6 class explored the textiles and natural fibres used by different indigenous cultures in Australia as part of their Art/Textiles. They looked at how baskets and bags were constructed and used for different purposes and how each item was named depending on the area and fibres used to weave it. The student's created their own small celebration piece by using cotton with rattan and added feathers to demonstrate weaving and knotting.

Year 6 into Year 7 Science Transition
As part of the step up transition from Year 6 into Year 7, students participated in two separate activities.
Firstly, they were introduced to the scientific method and how reports are structured using the “Flame Tests” experiment. Students used their observation of colour change
with various substances to determine the identity of an unknown substance. The second activity introduced the students to the basics of microscope operation and
slide preparation. Students made their own slide and then created a biological drawing of onion cells observed under magnification.
The students really enjoyed the session and obtained some excellent results. Well done!
