From the Deputy Principals’ Desks Year 12 Students and Project Work Students have been busy as assessments are finalized. In particular, students who have been working on year long projects have had their HSC body of work submitted in subjects such as Design and Technology, Drama and Visual Arts. We have viewed these submissions and were amazed by the high standards this year. Good luck Year 12. Students reported that they value this process as teachers help them to crystallize their career plans and options. Any students who were away and therefore did not have the interviews must see Ms Andre.

Senior School Wednesday bus We have managed to secure a 687 bus which will take our Year 11 and 12 students to Bondi Junction after period 4. Students can catch this bus directly from Hardy Street at 1:00 pm. Uniform Thank you for your support in helping the school enforce its uniform policy. We remind parents that our uniform shop is open 8:30am Tuesdays and Wednesdays for an hour, and from 1:00pm Thursdays for another hour. The uniform shop is well stocked with uniform items of all sizes.

English Year 7: Have completed their picture book unit and will now look at studying how meaning is created and represented in the filmic medium. Year 8: Are looking at parody and cultural concerns in film texts. They will write an extended response that looks at how appeal is generated in these films. Year 9: Are studying William Shakespeare, looking at either The Taming of the Shrew or Macbeth. They are working towards a close understanding of text so that they can complete a listening task and extended response to the forms, features and content of Shakespeare's populist texts. This will culminate in looking at a filmic adaptation of Shakespeare's all-enduring texts.

Year 10: Are continuing to look at short films and techniques used to achieve purpose in this medium also. The assessment task is this Thursday and will involve viewing an unseen short film and then answering a range of short answer questions about it.

Year 11: Standard are completing their study of the similarities and contrasts between The Matrix and I, Robot as a dystopian comparative study. Advanced are also finishing their dystopian comparative study of The Matrix, but are comparing it to George Orwell's final masterpiece, 1984. Extension are continuing their study of the Gothic genre. Year 11 end of year examinations will feature two essay questions: firstly, the previous unit undertaken last term, and secondly the current comparative study.

Year 12: Are putting the finishing touches on their courses in preparation for the HSC. Revision of each unit is essential now, practising under time constraints at home, using questions from previous HSC's and ensuring that the question is adhered to throughout, will help in this preparation.

Mathematics

Number Crunchers “Number Crunchers” is a Sydney Region‟s exciting initiative to promote the awareness of Maths amongst year 7 students and Rose Bay Secondary College is a former champion in 2010. The Maths Faculty is now conducting preliminary rounds of Number Crunchers to select representatives for the Cluster Final later this term. See Ms Trifunovic for details if your year 7 child is interested.

Year 12: After the Trial Exams, students must use the feedback given to guide their study and must address the weaknesses highlighted. Students should also attend all Maths lessons and revise with more HSC style questions and practice under examination conditions as part of the preparation for the HSC. See class teachers for further assistance.

Year 11: Results of Assessment Task 3 for all year 11 Maths classes should have been known by now. Parents can check with their child on the progress in Maths. After completing Quadratic Function, the Maths Extension classes are starting on the Geometry of the Parabola. All General Maths classes will have an assignment on a Focus Study topic which is due before the end of the term. The Yearly Exam is scheduled at Term 3 Week 9 and 10. Students will be issue the relevant assessment notification next week. Please be reminded that students who have missed any Assessment Task need to follow the school policy by completing a misadventure form with a medical certificate and submit them to Mr Lo the first day back to school. Year 8 – 10: It is the Maths Faculty‟s policy to have a topic test after each topic is completed for years 8 to 10 and students should be expecting 2 or more topic tests each term. Hence, students in year 8, 9 and 10 should have completed the first topic test for Term 3 with another topic test due shortly. Students should plan for a study routine including using MATHLETICS and attending after school Homework Centre on Monday and Thursday at school library. Please ask your child or check with the class teachers about the current topic and topic tests for detail. The Stage 5.3 Advanced Maths classes are completing Curve Sketching and a topic test is scheduled this Friday. The next topic will be Similarity. Year 7: The Term 3 common test is scheduled at 29/4/2013 Thursday Week 7 on Algebra, Angles and Decimal. Detail can be found in the Assessment Notification issued to students last week. Contact the class teacher for the Assessment Notification if your child does not have one yet.

Science The Science department would like to send a huge thankyou to Dr Greg Poole who gave a fantastic talk to our future physics students in year 10. Dr Poole is an Astronomer working as a postdoc in the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing (CAS) at the Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) in Melbourne, Australia. You can find out more about his research at his website. Year 7 Year 7 are continuing their work on the topic “Planet Earth”. Year 8 Year 8 have started their new topic “The Human Body” and will be working through the different body systems in week 7 and 8. Year 8 will be given an assignment for this topic at the end of week 7 which will be due early next term. Year 9 Year 9 have started their new topic “Energy Resources” and should be receiving their assignment for this topic by early week 8. Students are to create a short movie using their laptops that shows the life of a resource used by humans. Year 9 should ensure all work is being done as it is important to remember that all content taught in year 9 is examinable in the school certificate. Year 10

Students are well into their final rotation for year 10. Students will have a test, worth 10% and an assessment task, worth 10%, for each of these rotations. Students should see their teacher if they are unsure what is required of them. Year 11 Biology Students will be completing their final Preliminary topic “Evolution of Australian Biota” in the next two weeks and will spend some class time doing revision, if time permits. Students should also be advised that they will be examined on all four Preliminary topics – A local ecosystem, Patterns in Nature, Life on earth and Evolution of Australian biota – in their final examination during weeks 9 and 10. This exam is worth 30%. Students should also be studying in their own time and referring any questions to their Biology teacher. Chemistry Chemistry students will be completing their final topic for the preliminary course “Energy” within the next few weeks. Students will be examined on all four topics form the Preliminary course. There yearly exam will count for 30% of their final mark. Physics Yr 11 physics students should have handed in their assignment “The Cosmic Engine”. There yearly exam will count for 30% of their final mark. Year 12 Biology Biology students will be finishing their final topic “communication” in with the next two weeks. Students are expected to continue coming to class as we will be looking in depth at past papers and practising exam technique. Chemistry Chemistry students will be finishing their final topic “Industrial Chemistry” throughout the next two weeks. Students are expected to continue coming to class as we will be looking in depth at past papers and practising exam technique. Physics Students should have submitted their final assessment during week 6 for the “Quanta to Quarks” topic, which consisted of research on the Manhattan project. This assessment is worth 16%.

History Year 7: Students are continuing with their study of Ancient Egyptian society. Currently they are looking at religion and burial practises, included the old favourite – mummification! They wail also study the structure of Egyptian society and hierarchy etc. Assessment task on Egyptian Gods has been recently submitted. Students in Year 7 are commencing their unit on Ancient Greece. They will be looking at social structure, the start of democracy, buildings, religion and warfare. Year 8:

Students will continue looking at the Aztec civilisation over the next few weeks, with a focus on their contact with the Spanish. They will have received an assessment notification this week for an in class test during week 9- which will be based on sources. Year 9: Students in Ms Pollock's class will spend the final weeks of term looking at the Russian Revolution as part of their unit on Progressive Ideas and Movements. Students will have an essay and propaganda poster due in Week 9, as well as the third component of their ongoing Portfolio Task. 9D- will be finishing off our topic on the Industrial Revolution. Elective: We will continue our unit on terrorism by looking at several case studies, including the hostages in Teheran, the seizure of the Golden Temple at Amritsar and the bombing in Scotland. Year 10: We will be continuing our unit on Australia in the post-WW2 period, looking at the influence of the US and UK on things such as music, film and television, as well as looking at technological changes over the decades since the 1950s and 1960s. Students will have 2 tasks due on Fridays of weeks 6, 7 and 8 Elective: Students have begun their study of Genghis Khan and the Mongols focusing on his origins and the sources available. They will also look at Mongol war strategy and the armour and weapons they used so effectively. Assessment tasks on “My Hero from History” to be returned. Year 11 Modern History: We will be finishing off the causes of World War One before revising for the yearly exams in week 9. Focus is on long-term causes and key concepts: Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism and Imperialism. The crises in Morocco and the Balkans are dealt with in detail. They then study the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the “July Crisis” and countdown to the outbreak of WWI. Ancient History: We will be finishing off the Celts in Europe looking at the legacy of the Celts before revising for the yearly exams in week 9. Society and Culture: In class we are focusing on stereotypes and how these can impact communication. Students are to be revising for the yearly examination. The exam will comprise of three sections – Section 1 – The Social and Cultural World – multiple choice and short answer questions based on concepts and methodologies. Section 2 – a structured extended response on Personal and Social Identity (agents of socialisation, nature vs. nurture debate and the construction of identity) and Section 3 – Intercultural Communication – students will be expected to compare the gender roles in Australian society with a country of their choice. Year 12

Modern History: Over the next fortnight we will discuss the historical debate surrounding Leni Riefenstahl and decide if she was an opportunistic artist or propagandist?! Ancient History: Students have been studying life in Pompeii in detail. In particular focus has been on Leisure – Gladiators, Baths, Bars and all the fun things typifying Ancient Rome. They are also looking at Domestic Housing and then Public Buildings and finally a detailed discussion of the Conservation of the Site and issues raised. (Which is a substantial part of the HSC exam itself) Society and Culture: Ms Hawkins class will continue their study of Buddhism by making predictions; students will consider the impact of westernisation and globalisation on the Belief System. They will then apply the same methodologies to Popular Culture and our country study of Vietnam. Ms Metson‟s class will continue with their study of equality and difference. We will then undertake future studies in all three topics. Studies of Religion: It is the final countdown for our religious scholars! Students are concluding their unit on Religion and Peace by looking at the Islamic concept of peace and how the Qur'an supports this. They are encouraged to do detailed and frequent revision, particularly of terminology as this is an integral part of the course. Languages Japanese Year 7 Japanese are learning the hiragana sounds and the rhymes to help them remember the sounds. They are then writing each sound in the correct stroke order under the tyrannical gaze of Ms McMahon. Each mistake in stroke order must be corrected immediately with an eraser (and a stern look). Year 8 Students are finishing testing and power point presentations, then watching "Howl's moving castle", made by the same Ghibli studios that some students researched for their presentations. It is a masterpiece of animation. Year 9 Students are finishing testing, expressing likes and dislikes about school, subjects, teachers, food, and then writing more and more in katakana as well as hiragana. Year 10 Japanese have completed their listening and speaking tests about the size of their family, descriptions of its members, their personalities and interests. The class is very happy with the practicum student Ms Liu who tested their speaking capabilities with such ease and enthusiasm. Italian 7D

During weeks 8 and 9 students will sit for their exams. They should be ready as they practised a lot in class. 8G, 8B, 8C During weeks 8 and 9 students will sit for their exams. They should be ready as they practised a lot in class. Year 10 Advanced Italian students are at the end of a unit of work and will be assessed on this topic in week 8. They have learned to identify the past tense and have developed language skills to talk about past events and experiences. They have also learned about how Italians use abbreviations when writing SMS messages or chatting online. In the coming weeks culture lesson will focus on Italian women and their contributions to Australian society. Ms Leontieva’s Year 10 Class During weeks 8 and 9 students will sit for their exams. They should be ready as they practised a lot in class. Year 9 Philosophy During weeks 8 and 9 students will start a new branch in philosophy: Normative Ethics. Students will explore the issue of what makes an action Right/Moral and Wrong/Immoral. Students will learn about utilitarianism and decide if the greater happiness for the greater number of people makes an action moral. Is it moral to kill one person in order to save many lives? It is going to be hard to decide but the arguments For and Against this theory might help. I hope we have a strong group of students in this class who will be able to put emotions aside and use their rationality. Good luck to me as students are becoming real philosophers and argue relentlessly. Year 10 Philosophy During weeks 8 and 9 students will continue exploring one of the most important question in our life: Does God exist? They will learn about Moral argument, argument for "Pascal's Wager" and argument from religious experience. Some students are already convinced that God exists but some remain atheists. Who is right? Does God really exist? I do not know. Social Science All students from years 7 – 12 have been issued with a detailed assessment schedule outlining each of the assignments and tests that will take place throughout the year. Social Science Staffing for 2013 - Term 3 Mr Horrell – Geography and Business Studies teacher (Relieving Head Teacher), Ms Burke – Business Studies, Commerce and Geography teacher (Head Teacher of Administration) Ms Garcia – Legal Studies and Geography Ms O‟Rourke – Business Studies, Work Studies, Commerce and Geography teacher Mr Kent - Geography, Commerce, Business Studies and Economics. Mr Cochran – Legal Studies, Geography and History Mr Shakibaei (relieving Ms Kelly) – Economics, Commerce and Geography. Year 7 Geography Students are looking at World Heritage Areas studying their cultural, historical and natural significance. Their skills test will be in week 8.

Year 8 Geography Year 8 are continuing with geographical issues. They are looking at Tourism and Urbanisation in detail. Students will explain the links between human actions and the consequences for ecological sustainability of these issues on a global scale. Year 9 Geography Year 9 are learning about the various natural hazards that threaten the Australian landscape and its communities. Students explore why people risk living in disaster-prone areas, how humans influence the severity of natural disasters, and the importance of effective emergency response management. They then investigate Australia‟s main natural hazards – droughts, bushfires, floods, earthquakes and storms – in detail with reference to relevant case studies such as Queensland floods and the Black Saturday bushfires. Commerce Students are continuing with the topic of employment looking at types of employment, changes in traditional patterns and education, training and employment. Year 10 Geography Students are currently studying Australia‟s challenges with human rights and reconciliation. Students have completed a weather research and report which was very well researched and analysed. Commerce Students are enjoying playing the stock market game. They are currently studying investing and will be investigating rates of return and the risk involved. Year 11 Economics Each Friday students should have their homework completed. Students have a Labour Market Skills test coming up in Week 7. Geography Students are studying Natural Resource use. They will be focusing on Oil as a resource in detail. Students SGP projects were thoroughly researched and well written. Well done! Students have a cultural integration task due in Week 7. Work Studies Students are completing an assessment task that requires them to write two letters- one that complains about food and service at a restaurant, and one that responds with an apology from the manager. Legal Studies Year 11 students have recently finished presenting their “Law in Practice” research tasks to their peers. This provided them with an excellent opportunity to develop their public speaking skills. Students had to select an event or case in Australia‟s recent history and highlight the legal implications that emerged from it.

Students will be visiting „Gourmet Slice‟ in Bondi Beach this week to observe a small business in action. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and eat pizza! Students will also be revising for their upcoming Preliminary Exam in Weeks 8/9. Year 12 Business Studies Students will then review their Trial Exam and continue with the topic Marketing and revision for the remainder of term. Economics Students are reviewing their Trial Exam and continue with Course content and revision for the remainder of term. Geography Students have homework due each Monday. They are studying People and Economic Activity looking at Tourism and the enterprise „Skyrail‟ in Cairns in detail. Students are completing practice essays each week with feedback to assist them with these longer responses for the HSC. Classes will continue until the last day of school. Legal Studies In the wake of the HSC trial examinations, Year 12 students are continuing on with World Order. Media reports on the ongoing crisis in Syria are being used to give real substance to key concepts such as state sovereignty and multilateralism, and also highlight the shortcomings of the UN Security Council and the principle of R2P.

PDHPE All students from years 7 – 10 have been issued with a detailed scope and sequence that explains at length what students are doing each term in the theoretical and practical components of this course. Students have also been issued with a “PDHPE GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AT RBSC” sheet. This details the requirements in PDHPE in relation to uniform, theory lessons, homework, assignments and student conduct. Year 7 Year 7 are completing a unit entitled “Am I Normal?” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unit students will look at factors that affect health such as adolescence and change, body image, eating disorders, the nature of mental health problems and seeking help/protective strategies. The assessment task for this unit is creating a TV advertisement for the selective class and creating a poster in glogster for the comprehensive classes. The standard of these assignments is very impressive and the students are to be commended for their efforts. In the practical component of this course the students will enjoy participating in a line dance unit and will create their own line dance. The line dances are currently being assessed and are of a very high standard. Year 8 Year 8 are completing a unit entitled “Smart Living” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unit students will explore drug use and strategies to minimise harm in this area. The assessment task for this unit is a research task for the comprehensive class and a research, survey and analysis task for the selective cohort. This was issued in week five of this term and was due week seven. In the practical component of this course the students are participating in a range of football sports; soccer, touch, aussie rules and OZ tag.

Year 9 Year 9 are completing a unit entitled “Eat Well, Live Well” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unit students will look at healthy nutritional habits, health consumerism and drug use. Please note that Year 9 are working with edmodo on their laptops and should be checking this daily. The assessment task for this unit is a research task for the comprehensive class and a research, survey and analysis task for the selective cohort. This has been issued in week six of this term and is due week eight. In the practical component of this course the students created their own games and these were of a very high standard. Year 10 Year 10 are completing a unit entitled “Skills for Thrills” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unit students will explore influences on skill development and performance and applying mechanical principles to enhance performance. The assessment task for this unit is a research assignment and report. Please note that Year 10 are working with edmodo on their laptops and should be checking this daily. In the practical component of this course the students are utilising the colleges fit lab and learning a range of age appropriate fitness activities such as spin classes, pump classes, yoga, circuit classes and boxing. Year 9 PASS – These students are starting a new unit entitled – “Taking the Leap”. Students will develop a knowledge and appreciation of the fundamentals of movement skill and then apply it to the area of physical fitness and fitness testing. They study the basic theoretical foundations of skill development including physical and mental practice. During this unit students will also participate in a range of striking/field games that require the application, transfer and modification of movement skills. Year 10 PASS – This term students will be examining the commercialisation of sport. This topic looks at how elements of sport and physical activity have become a commodity. Focus will be made on issues such as amateur sporting ideals versus commercial sport, media in sport, advertising, sponsorship, equity in sport male sports and female sports, sport celebrity and the direction of sport in the future. This class also had the wonderful opportunity to complete their Sports First Aid course and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Year 11 SLR This term the SLR students are starting the unit Healthy Lifestyles. Students will be learning about Lifestyle components, benefits of physical participation, dietary guidelines and other selected health issues. This topic will also encompass how various lifestyle issues as mentioned can affect physical health and related aspects. Student will also part take in a range of sports and physical activities combining theoretical information covered in class. Year 11 Year 11 are completing the option “Fitness Choices”. This cohort was lucky enough to be able to go to Fitness First Bondi Junction to participate in RPM (spin class), Body Balance and BodyPump classes. Fitness First kindly provided these lessons free of charge. This class also had the wonderful opportunity to complete their Sports First Aid course and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Year 12

Year 12 have almost finished the Improving Performance option. They are vigorously and enthusiastically revising for the HSC examination. Students should complete and submit for marking at least three past papers … this is the best way to study and improve. Past exams and examination tips can be found on the following website http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.auEach student should be aiming to spend at least three hours a week studying just for this subject. Yr7 and yr8 (JUMP ROPE FOR HEART) On Wednesday the 4th September 2013 yr7 and 8 will be participating in “Jump Rope for Heart” program. This initiative is to educate and promote healthy living so as to reduce the rates of Heart Disease. It is an important program for all students to get sponsored by their friends and family, so that we can contribute significantly to help the Heart Foundation to find further treatments and hopefully a cure.

Creative and Performing Arts Music Ensemble Program (MEP) Tutor Night This will be held in the MEP space on Thursday, Sept 12, 2013. Time TBC Senior Concert Band and Senior Stage Bands: These groups are required to play for our Year 12 students at their HSC Music Practical Exams; Wednesday, Sept 4 – Stage Band only for Rebecca Spicer Thursday Sept. 5 – Stage Band and Senior Concert Band for Luke Cruickshank and Jack Tinker. MUSIC Year 12 Music 2 and Music 1 and Music Extension are preparing for the HSC Performances scheduled for Sept 4 (Music 1) and Sept 5 (Music 2 and Extension). Compositions and Musicology Submissions are due by 9am on Monday, Sept 2. DRAMA Year 11: Year 11 Drama Night was a huge success. Thank you to all the parents and friends who came to support the talented and hard working students. The students will now be preparing for their end of year exams where they will be writing two extended responses on Theatre of the Absurd and the Elements of Drama. Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction to certain foods such as nuts or shellfish or

to insect bites. You must let your child's teacher know if your child is allergic to foods or is at risk

of anaphylaxis. We ask members of the school community not to bring nuts and nut products to school eg nut bars and peanut butter. Upcoming Police Talks Year 11 Year 11 students will participate in a police talk about “safe partying” on Thursday, 5th September. This talk is designed to be both informative and provide students the opportunity to ask questions. It will be presented by Senior Constable Matthew Smith, our School Liaison Police Officer. Year 12 Year 12 students will participate in a police talk about “safe partying” on Tuesday, 3rdSeptember. Digital Thumbprint Year 7 students will participate in a workshop about cyber safety on Thursday 19th September (Thursday Week 10) . This program will be delivered in class groups on the day. The following provides an overview of the program: “Digital Insight (Year 7 & 8) - This workshop aims to equip students with important knowledge about how our information is shared and used on the internet, we want them to walk away with an understanding that their personal data is valuable and with tactics that they can utilise to better secure their data and online services.” RYDA Year 10 students have received information about this excursion, which will be held on Monday 14th October. If they have misplaced their permission not they should see Ms Stern for a new one. All year 10 students are expected to attend this excursion, as the school views it as an important part of the Welfare Program. End of Year Reward Excursions Plans have been made for end of year reward excursions during Week 10 of Term 4 for Years 7 – 11. . As these are reward excursion students will need to meet certain criteria in order to be able to attend. Students who have been on a red book, or suspended for Second Semester (Term 3 and 4) will be excluded from this excursion.

More detail about each excursion will be provided next term along with permission notes during Term 4. Review of the Welfare and Discipline Procedures During 2013 we are reviewing the Welfare and Discipline procedures in the College. The information from this review will be used to identify areas for improvement in these procedures and to set directions for the future. Staff have recently participated in surveying.. Over the coming weeks we will be gathering information from students via survey. We are also seeking your input to this review. EXTRA – CURRICULAR PROGRAMS V-FEST V-FEST is the College annual film festival held at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington. The completed films are due on Tuesday 3rd September. These MUST be on a DVD and the entry form needs to be completed. Please see Miss Cave if there are any questions. This year we are asking for monetary donations from our parent and community body to assist with prizes, etc. If you would like to donate, please contact our Finance Office with your details. We are asking for anything from $20 and upwards.
