PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

STUDENT WELLBEING A core belief of us as Christians is that God wants our happiness and gives us the freedom to make good choices that will ultimately improve our wellbeing. Research on the topic of positive psychology has shown that it is possible to increase happiness by becoming more engaged in your work or study and by finding time to reflect on various facets of your life. Releasing anger and resentment caused by others as well as performing small acts of kindness will not only make you feel good about yourself but will also improve your connections to others. Some other good advice to improve wellbeing from “Health Matters” includes:

Savour – become more aware of relaxation, leisure and times of pleasure and give conscious attention to the experience of the joy within this.

Share your experiences with others – tell them how much you valued a particular moment or experience. Build memories – take mental photographs of your experiences, so you can reflect on them later with others. Congratulate yourself – don’t be afraid to tell yourself how great you are. Absorb yourself in the moment – block out the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the moment. Be mindful – by focusing your attention on the present moment.

WALKATHON FRIDAY, 16 th SEPTEMBER The walkathon directs money to school funds for particular resources which have been suggested by the students. The SRC over the years have had suggestions which were all taken from the student body and we have always tried to spread the funds throughout various areas of the school. Please see below some of the most recent rewards from the walkathon fundraising.I encourage students and parents to support this endeavour as best they can and I thank you sincerely for doing so.

EVANGELISATION NEWS 2016 HSC PRAYER SPONSORS Each year, we invite members of our College community to be prayer sponsors for our Year 12 students as they complete their HSC exams. A prayer sponsor is someone who prays for another person with a specific intention in mind and at specific times. This is a great way for families and friends in our school community to support the senior students during their HSC exams. If you are interested in being a prayer sponsor for a Year 12 student, please contact the College (senior office). Further details (student name, exam time, and prayers to be offered) will be sent during the next few weeks. Joan Lancaster Leader of Evangelisation [email protected]

YEAR 12 NEWS COURTNEY MASON Courtney has had extensive participation in the Air Force Cadets during the last four years, displaying real leadership skills and giving much of her time to support other cadets. She was chosen as one of the Cadet Leaders when 120 cadets attended a January program in Darwin. As well as giving a commemorative speech at this year’s Anzac Day dawn service and lunched with the NSW Governor and his wife to name but a few events. In July/August she was one of three Australian Air Force Cadets selected to attend the International Air Cadet Exchange program for a three week visit to Hong Kong and China. This was quite an accomplishment and an amazing opportunity. It also meant Courtney had a very hectic schedule when she returned, catching up on Trial HSC exams. Below is Coutney’s account of her experience as well as a few photos taken. “I have recently returned from a three week visit to Hong Kong and China representing the Australian Air Force Cadets in the International Air Cadet Exchange program. I am a Cadet Under Officer in the Air Force Cadets, and was one of three Australian Cadets who along with participants from Canada, France, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the USA spent three weeks immersing themselves in the local culture and meeting local dignitaries. Across Australia 30 cadets are selected each year to act as ambassadors for Australia and the AAFC. The itineraries are designed to provide cultural and visitor experiences not generally available to ordinary tourists. Some of my most memorable highlights during the visit include flying around Hong Kong in a helicopter, a formal reception with the Australian Ambassador at the Embassy and visiting small local communities that weren’t on the usual tourist trail and of course the shopping I have made some really good friends that I’m sure will be friends for life from undertaking this program. It was a great experience to spend extended time with people my own age from so many different countries and nationalities and to realise that we all have many similarities.”

FAREWELL MASS & ASSEMBLY Reminder that this event is on Friday, 23rd September in the Lochinvar Centre (senior MPC). The Mass will run from about 9.15a.m. - 10.15a.m; a morning tea for Year 12 students, parents and teachers from about 10.15a.m. – 10.45a.m; then the assembly from about 10.45a.m. – 12.15p.m. Please contact the College if there are mobility/special seating requirements. An information sheet for students and parents will be distributed in the next few days outlining some of these details as well as others relating to the Graduation Dinner (11th November at Panthers). This note will have a tear off section to return for any students or guests who have special dietary needs. ATTENDANCE TILL THE END OF TERM As raised several times in previous newsletters and discussed with the Year 12 cohort, there is essential learning that occurs at the College in preparation for the HSC. All teachers have devised programs to maximise student achievement. The staff at MacKillop are very experienced and know what works and what doesn’t. Students who feel they are better off staying at home to study and prepare are deluding themselves. This also shows a lack of respect to the staff who have worked so tirelessly to support them. Phil Lloyd Year 12 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 11 NEWS END OF PRELIMINARY EXAMS As you would be aware the end of Preliminary course exams commence on Monday, 12th September and will conclude on Thursday, 22nd September. Students are asked to read and be familiar with the following instructions to ensure that the exam period will be trouble free:

• All Year 11 students have received an exam timetable • Exams commence at 9.15a.m. and 1.05p.m. • Students are permitted to leave the school grounds following their final exam on any given day. If a student

has an exam at 9.15a.m. and a second exam at 1.05p.m. they must remain at school between the sitting of these exams.

• Students must arrive to school at least 15 minutes prior to an exam commencing • When on school premises students must be in school uniform. Students have the option of wearing full

school uniform or their sports uniform. Mixing of the normal uniform and sports uniform will not be permitted.

• Students will not be permitted to leave the exam room early. • Students will not be permitted to bring mobile phones into the examination room. Students are instructed

to leave them turned off in their bag outside the room or leave them turned off on the stage area of the Lochinvar Centre in line with their row.

• The Study Centre and Library will be open and supervised throughout the examination period. This will provide families who would prefer that their son/daughter attend school each day of the exam period with an effective study environment.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION MASS AND FINAL ASSEMBLY Friday, 23rd September is a significant day in the College calendar as it is the final day for our Year 12 cohort. Due to the importance of this occasion it is essential that all Year 11 students are in attendance for both the mass and final assembly to celebrate the conclusion of formal classes for Year 12. There is also the strong likelihood that students will receive some of their examination results when classes resume on this day. Andrew Marsh Year 11 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 10 NEWS

WALKATHON The walkathon is fast approaching and the Year 10 incentive scheme is underway. The last two weeks have seen 10FI and 10I2 winning with the highest money raised so far. I encourage all Year 10 students to get behind this wonderful fundraising event. R U OK DAY Yesterday was “R U Ok Day”, a day set aside to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. Two Year 10 students, Isobel Berryman and Georgia Sinclair designed a special activity for all of Year 10 to celebrate the day. The activity involved each Year 10 student being allocated one other student to check in with and ask “R U Ok?” and to find ways to make that student feel special. All of the students were encouraged to write affirmations to each other and some also made a small gift to give. Tracey Bewicke Acting Year 10 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 9 NEWS

CANBERRA EXCURSION Students received two notes, one last week and one this week with final details about the Canberra Excursion. It is extremely important that if there has been any changes to medical details parents need to advise the school office to update the medical information. Students are asked that on Monday, 19th September they be at school no later than 4.45a.m. to depart from the bus bay at 5.00a.m. We arrive back at 8.00p.m. on Thursday, 22nd September. Please remember when packing for Canberra that it can get very cold. We are visiting important public buildings and you should dress accordingly. Please remember the College’s general guidelines regarding clothing for out of uniform excursions. As a general rule please be conservative. Phones, cameras, iPods and MP3 players may be taken at own risk. Students need to ensure they do not use their phone at each venue. Glen Littler Year 9 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 8 NEWS

Our South West Rocks camp is drawing very close. This week Year 8 had two formal opportunities to plan and organise meals in their food/cooking groups. Each student should have a copy of their meal plan, have a plan to purchase food and organise an esky and box for perishables the weekend prior to camp. Meals and preparation have also been discussed in PDHPE classes. Every student attending camp must be clear about all requirements and should check the PDHPE Moodle site for reference.

Next Tuesday, during their regular sport time, Year 8 will practise erecting and packing away their tent. Please ensure each tent is clearly labelled on the outside with its owner’s name. Tents will be stored at school securely, ready to be packed on the bus the following Monday. Andrew Stocks and Samuel Hazelton-Kelly have worked hard in representative soccer to become grand final winners in the national premier league against the emerging Jets 3-1. Congratulations Congratulations to Paige Wilkinson who has received a Silver Principal’s Award. Congratulations also to Ben Stott and Paige Wilkinson who have received a Pastoral Co-ordinator’s Award. Nicole O’Connell Year 8 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 7 NEWS MULTICULTURAL AWARENESS DAY Students were treated to some fun and engaging activities on Wednesday thanks to Year 8 student, Klaire Fallon . As a Youth Frontiers mentoring initiative, Klaire felt that in our community at MacKillop College, we should be embracing each other’s cultural heritage. Her activities were based on language, dancing, general knowledge and Klaire even organised some tasty treats for us to share! Fun was had by all and some lucky students even won some great prizes. Well done Klaire and thank you for a great day! FATHER ROB GALEA Father Rob Galea has just returned from Poland celebrating with the Pope and countless young Catholics at World Youth Day 2016. Year 7 are lucky to have Fr Rob join us here at MacKillop College on Wednesday. He will share his gifts and talents as a singer/songwriter (he was a successful contestant on X Factor), but will also engage us in story and prayer. WALKATHON Not long now! Who are you walking with? What will you wear? Est-ce que tu sais comment y aller? Who is paying attention? What does that mean? If you know, be the first to see Mrs McKell with the correct answer for a prize! WELL DONE Congratulations to some talented Year 7 dancers – Jorja Breust, Kaitlyn Carney and Molly Fisher – who travelled north a short time ago to compete in the Gold Coast Dance Eisteddfod. The girls achieved some amazing results in their group competition, winning the 12 years Contemporary section and achieving great results in the Modern/Lyrical and Jazz sections. Chookas!

SCIENCE NEWS AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR YEAR 10 STUDENTS. The ANSTO Big Ideas Forum will bring students and teachers from across Australia to Sydney to meet world-class researchers and get hands-on with amazing technology. The event runs from 14th – 18th November. This is a free event if selected – all flights, travel, accommodation and meals are paid for by ANSTO. ANSTO are looking for people who are creative and passionate – you don’t have to be top of your class. Young people using science are the ones who will take our society into the future. The application is simple – film a 40-second video with two students telling us: What question would you like to see scientists solve for the future of our society? Here are some topics to get you thinking: • Human health and medicine • The environment • Renewable energy • Wearable technology • Sustainability • Water and food supply • Cars or other transport • Global poverty • Marine life • Outer space. Additional information can be found on the ANSTO website: http://www.ansto.gov.au/Events/BigIdeas/index.htm#InfoTeacher If you are interested in applying for this opportunity and you are in Year 10 grab a friend and see Mr Harvey before Wednesday, 14th September to get the process started. MARINE NEWS

Students studying Marine and Aquaculture Technology have a new aquaculture farm. Aquaculture, better known as fish farming, is an industry that is growing substantially each year. It is estimated that this trade accounts for 50% of the fish consumed globally. The goal in aquaculture is to supply fish sustainably. That is, producing fish in a way that does not deprive the environment of productive natural resources and without damaging the environment.

Students will be using this small scale aquaculture farm to grow Jade Perch (Scortum barcoo/ Barcoo grunter). The water from the fish waste will be reticulated through a hydroponic grow bed. Students will be able to grow a variety of seasonal fruit and vegetables throughout the school year.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORTS LISMORE DIOCESE NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS – PORT MACQUA RIE Years 7/8 Diocesan Netball This week saw our 2016 Diocesan school netball season finish up with a great performance at the Lismore Diocese Championships. After finishing first in their pool, the Year 7/8 team beat Woodlawn in the semis in order to face Regional in the final for a close match where we emerged as winners. This team was selected and began preparations back in Term 1 with the Diocesan Championships in their sights. Their many hours of training certainly paid off when they experienced their well-deserved success. Part of their preparation included competing in the Northern NSW Schools Cup where they were local champions, then regional champions in a competition against schools from all sectors. They are now off to state finals in Sydney at the end of this term. We wish them all the best with their games in Sydney. The girls in the team are Aleigha Biron, Abbey Cross, Laura Ellison, Chloe Garvey, Emma Jordan, Cian Leahy, Maia Marino , Amy Murphy , Kimberley Palmer and Petrea Spencer. We would also like to say a special thank you to our fabulous umpires who represented our school at the Diocesan Championships. Madalin Boys, Kelsey Gibson, Sophie Marchingo, and Cindy Newman……thank you……without umpires we don’t have a game! We truly appreciate the great job you did on the day. Michelle Marino Coach Years 9/10 Diocesan Netball Congratulations to all the girls who played in the Year 9/10 Diocesan Netball Championships. The girls played fantastically all day and finished the day as Diocesan runners up. The team was successful against Regional, Banora Point, Casino and Xavier College. In the finals they had a semi-final win over Trinity College and in the final they were narrowly defeated by Woodlawn College. All of the girls displayed fantastic netball skills and a positive attitude throughout the day. The team included: Ellie Cross, Courtney Gallagher, Lucy Hills (Captain), Georgia Marino, Jacqueline Palmer, Elly Pilgrim , Ellie Richards, Amber Stokes, Sophie Smith and Isabella Turnbull . Congratulations to Jacqueline Palmer who was voted by her teammates as best and fairest. Tahnee Johnston Coach Years 11/12 Diocesan Netball As usual the girls showed up to the courts with a great attitude and a desire to win. Kayla Murray , Abby Swarbrick and Ella Chappell did a wonderful job at the shooting end, keeping their heads under pressure and refusing to be rattled by tough defence. Britney Duck (captain) and Jordan Gilmour (vice captain) lead the girls remarkably and worked tirelessly at the defensive end. I am always amazed by their natural ability and the seemingly impossible intercepts they manage to get. Jade Dulovic and Erinn Smith strived for every ball and were a much needed steadying influence in the centre court.

The girls played well and made it to the semi-finals. Unfortunately they were knocked out by an impressive Regional team who went on to win the day, with our final result being an impressive third. Last but certainly not least are my two players of the day - Jade Horton and Amy Mutton . Jade played out of position most of the day in centre and did an outstanding job, creating turnovers and directing the play like a professional. Amy outplayed each of her opponents and never stopped giving everything she had - a very impressive performance. As always I loved coaching the senior team. I thank the girls for their great “sportsgirlship” and supportive attitude. Mrs Lisa Kable Coach SENIOR SPORTS AWARDS As amateurs often do, I made a mistake in the Senior Sports Awards last week by omitting the Triathlon Best and Fairest. Dafydd Wall, the recipient of the award, always strives to do his best in all his endeavours and triathlon was no exception. Dafydd placed 10th overall and was the 2nd Catholic boy in the All Schools Triathlon event earlier in the year, an accomplishment that most certainly makes him deserving of this award. Congratulations Dafydd. YEAR 9 & 10 SPORT SELECTIONS Year 9 and 10 sport selection notes have gone home this week and sport selections will open next week. Please ensure that your child has their notes returned by Monday, 12th September. Andrea Huxley Leader of Sport [email protected]
