    THE GAZETTE DESKCHRISTMAS PAST

A goodly num ber of churches are doing away with the trad itional m idnight Christmas service and going only to a family service at 7:30.

The First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown has the two services, one at 7:30 and the o ther beginning at 11 o'clock.

We sang in the First Presbyterian Church of Hightstown choir for over forty years, until Miss Edith Erving, the organist, left and went to the First Baptist Church to play the organ. Also, Dr. Edgar Thomas, the choirmaster, had resigned due to the fact he had become principal of the Melvin H. Kreps School and later the superin tenden t of schools.

We began singing when we were in H ightstow n High School. We could only sing at the Sunday evening services until we had graduated from high school; and then we could join the ad u lt choir, which we did while we were in college at the New Jersey College for W omen, which became Douglass College in the 1940s.

After we left the Presbyterian church choir, we sang with the Baptists until the early 1990s or late 1980s.

We did sing in the 1990s for the June Festival, and after that we quit.

We alw ays loved the olderPresbyterian Church in which the sanctuary faced the street. With the new church, the sanctuary faces the back street, Mechanic Street.

We were responsible for the choir room in the new church, which is the present church, but that room is now being used for storage.

The present choir, which we call a glee club, does not sit in the chancel, bu t instead comes up to the chancel to sing and does not wear choir gowns. Too bad, since choir gowns and separate choir position are traditional.

We loved greeting people outdoors alongside the church building after the Christmas midnight service was over. We w ould hug, and kiss, and laugh before going home to finish making pumpkin pies or finish trimming the tree.

After the choir sang in the chancel at the Presbyterian church, the choir would sing out in the foyer the old song, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

When we sang in the First Baptist Church, the Rev. Gaul was the pasto r, and Miss Grace Ashton was the choir director, and Miss Erving was the organist after Harold Light had died. He was the organist for many years.

Miss A shton w as all for classical music and would not sing very often the more modern songs, and she was always against the singing of the "We Wish You, etc.", but one choir rehearsal time, we convinced her to let us sing the "We Wish You...".

The following Christm as morning, and we think it was on Christmas Day, the choir burst into song with the, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year". We had not told Rev. Gaul we were going to do this; and was he surprised, because we sang before he could open his mouth.

We often th ink of the Methodist church on the Old Mill Road, Wall Tow nship, where during the weekdays the church was always open. The choir loft, which was not a loft, was even on the floor with the rest of the church. We used to sit in the chairs there when we were kids and no one bothered us.

Now we listen to the old time holiday programs on television, like "Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer", which is our fa v o r ite , b eca u se w e lik e to hear Burl Ives sing. He has been dead for a num ber of years, but we have his biography which he wrote a number of years ago. He sure got around in his youth.

A few other old time Christmas programs are good, but the more modem ones stink.

We sort of rambled along, bu t the holiday season is a good time for rambling...

SO WE WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS

    AND AHAPPY NEW YEAR!

PROPERTY TAX REFORM UPDATEOn December 21, 2004, the most

significant steps forward for property tax relief in thirty years were taken. The Property Tax Convention Task Force created by former Governor James McGreevey fulfilled its statutory obligation and has submitted its recommendations to Governor Richard Codey and the State Legislature. The next step is for Assembly Majority'Leader Joseph Roberts to introduce a legislative bill on January 10, 2005, to implement the recommendations of the Task Force.

The recommendations describe the Task Force's proposal for a State Constitutional Convention to' address New Jersey’s over reliance on the property tax to fund public education. Both the state senate and assembly must consider the bill within sixty days. If the legislature approves the recommendation, the public will have the opportunity to approve a convention in the November 2005 General Election. Then the people, via the referendum, will elect delegates from each of the forty legislative districts to represent them in the convention, to take place in the spring or summer of 2006 in order to put the final procedures on the November 2006 ballot.

This week’s recommendations represent the first important steps toward property tax relief. This is just the beginning of an extremely important process. The Task Force’s report can be accessed at http://www.nj.gov/conven- tion/.

Hightstown Mayor Bob Patten has been very active in advocating for a State Constitutional Convention. He has testified before the Task Force and

' has" spoken at several "other advocacy'

groups throughout the state. Mayor Patten responded to the Task Force's recommendation by stating, “It’s only the beginning. Legislators still need to approve the bill in both houses in order for the public to vote for the convention in 2006. The hurdles are high and opposition by special interest groups is mounting. Those communities with high regressive property taxes must speak out. Please contact your state

legislators to insist that the property tax reform through the convention is necessary. We are not only dealing with reluctant legislators, but with strong opposition from organizations and municipalities that may see their interests threatened.”

The Hightstown Council reinforced its belief in this process with its passage of a supporting resolution at the December 20th meeting.
