We’veallexperiencedthechargedatmosphereofridinginanelevatorwithastranger.Tentimesoutoften,it’sawkward.SaraAhmeddescribeshowuponenteringaroom,wecan“‘feeltheatmosphere’butwhatwemayfeeldependsontheangleofourarrival.”Affectcanbethoughtofasthethingthatinformsthedegreeofanyangleofarrival.Althoughrelatedtofeelingsandemotions,suchasenjoyment,distress,shame—affectsaredifferentinthattheyoccuratapre-linguisticlevel,pre-subjectivelevel.

InWhyAffectTheory?studentswillgainanunderstandingofwhatthismeans,whataffectsare,whatroletheyplayinindividualexperience,inshapingsociety,andthevariedmannersinwhichaffectsinformtheartwemakeanditswiderreception.Whatdoaffectsthemselves—andourunderstandingofthem—meaninapoliticalsense?Thecoursewillspecificallyfocusonaffectsinrelationtothisuneasymomentintime.Giventhedeepdivisionsinsociety,increasingecologicalcalamityatourdoorstep—feelingsofanxiety,experiencesofexhaustionandprecarityseemtogripalllevelsofexistence.

ThecoursebeginswithexploringhowweunderstandtheconceptofsocialreproductionandthenwillexploreanumberofdifferentworkplaceswithdifferentmethodsandworkstructuresincludingABF,ABurnOutClinic,andaHemtjänstcompanytoinvestigatesocialreproductionatwork.Byinvestigatingdifferentcontemporaryworkplaceswewilltrytounderstandhowwork‘works’uponbodiesandwhatstructuresandpracticesareinplaceatworkthatsupportandreproduceitsworkersandtheworkplace.Theconsiderationofothersitesofworkandworkplaceswillhelpustoreflectoncommonalities,andcollectivelydevelopspeculationsonhowthisrelatestoKonstfack,ourownpracticesandcontemporaryconditionsofworkasawhole.
