Welcome to Konstfack’s MFA Programme in Design!

Design profoundly affects perceptions, experiences, and interactions in society. This calls for

design practices that are experimental and reflective, formulating and approaching issues in

critical and artistic ways. You will explore design forms and spaces, materials and mediums,

proposals and prototypes, tools and techniques, discourses and ways of communicating.

These will be developed within processes involving learning, collaboration, transformation,

and generative deviation, concerned with personal, social, and environmental change. This

generative approach is at the core of the two specializations within the Master’s Programme

in Design – Individual Study Plan (InD) in Design and Spatial Design (SpD).

MFA-Design Programme Overview

The Master's programme in Design is intended to augment your capacity to work experimen-

tally and reflectively and both formulate and approach problems in a critical and artistic way.

You will be trained, for instance, to make creative decisions based on aesthetic as well as per-

sonal, social, environmental and other socially relevant aspects, and you will gain experience

of different approaches, methods and design areas.

The programme is based on artistic exploration and experimentation. Explorations that de-

velop your thought processes and enhance your capacity to comprehend. And experimenta-

tion, physical projects that increase the possibilities of surprises, learning and insights that

generate unexpected and new creations. The combination of the two, often in mutual coopera-

tion, encourages the transgression of disciplinary boundaries, systems of thought and prac-

tices, all on the basis of the programme's watchwords – change, new tools, links and diversity.

Our ambition is to use cooperation and fervent individual commitment to influence the world

so that with the help of what we create, which will to varying degrees invite engagement and

signal change, we will increase people's possibilities of exerting influence. Society needs dif-

ferent kinds of thinking and expertise.

Programme Specialisations

To meet these needs we offer you the possibilities of individual specialisation for both your

own personal development and a more explicit positioning in a widening and changing field.

Individual Study Plan in Design (InD)

The specialisation Individual Study Plan offers you the opportunity to specialise in design

through your own further study and personal development. You can focus on a professional

career designing furniture, products or services, or choose a focus that is a hybrid and exten-

sion of these professions. Focus on complex social challenges, or work with design that trans-

cends the object. You can also prepare yourself for a doctoral programme.

Spatial Design (SpD)

The specialisation Spatial Design offers individual specialisation and personal development in

this sphere as well as the possibility of positioning yourself in a widening field undergoing

change - architecture and spatial design. The track offers preparation for both professional ca-

reers and research.

Courses and Modules

The MFA-Design Programme is 120 credits/ECTS. Credits are earned through courses, which

are divided into smaller modules. Course Plans and Module Descriptions will be uploaded in

advance on the Intranet. There are 5 compulsory courses over 4 semesters (2 years):

(1) Introduction and broadening of perspective, 30 credits

The first course includes an introduction to the programme, the subject and all its con-

stituent parts, as well as a broadening of the perspectives on the subject and the profes-

sion. The goal is to further develop critical, analytical and artistic approaches. The se-

mester course includes studies of terminology, methods, processes, standpoints, ap-

proaches and contexts.

The course is divided into these modules:

• Orientations 12 credits; weeks 35-42

• Explorations I 12 credits; weeks 43-50

• Explorations II 6 credits; weeks 51-02

(2) In-depth studies in the subject and environment, 30 credits

During the second semester, the student has the opportunity to develop their abilities

via design assignments organised in project form. This may be elective or compulsory

depending on the specialisation the student has chosen. The semester course consists of

two modules, which offer in-depth studies in the subject and a third, which offers in-

depth studies in the environment with which the student cooperates. In the first module

is a Research Week (week 5) with preparatory and follow-up work. In the second mod-

ule, there are school-wide Electives. In the third module, student’s projects can take

place in vocational activities, industry or other activities depending on the student's

specialisation.

The course is divided into these modules:

• Re-Orientations 5 credits, weeks 3-5 ;

Includes school-wide Research Week, week 5

• Explorations III 13 credits, weeks 6-22

• Outlooks 9 credits, weeks 6-22

(3) In-depth reflection, 15 credits, weeks 35-44

In the third semester, the student is afforded the opportunity for in-depth reflection via

parallel and integrated design and text work.

(4) Degree project, 33 credits, weeks 45-15

During the third and fourth semesters, the degree project deepens the student's

knowledge within a specific area of the field of design, and the subject is chosen based

on the student's specialisation. The degree project work is divided into 2 stages: 15

credits and 18 credits.

(5) Summary and projection, 12 credits, weeks 16-22

This course follows the degree project in the fourth semester, focusing on developing a

summary and future projections.

School-wide and Cross-Programme Activities

There are several activities that are conducted for all Master’s programmes at Konstfack.

These are important and unique opportunities to meet teachers and students in other pro-

grammes, as well as important learning opportunities in areas that define Konstfack as a

whole. These activities do not have credits directly attached – student participation and grade

in these are assessed within the MFA-Design Programme courses and modules.

Skillshops

Monday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, Friday mornings

Skillshops are intensive activities introducing particular skills and topics, taught in locations

and faculty from across the school. Skillshops can last for a few hours or several days. Each

Skillshop is offered two or three times a semester, so that students can take them when rele-

vant to their work. MFA Design students should select Skillshops in consultation with their

teachers and in accordance with their Study Plan. Listings and sign-up for Skillshops is

through the Intranet, students are responsible for checking and signing themselves up.

Research Week

Week 5, 2017

There is a Konstfack Research Week each year, highlighting ongoing research projects and

strategic research themes at the school as well as issues in artistic and design research in Swe-

den and internationally. The week combines varied formats for engaging Master’s and PhD

students, researchers and faculty, and the public. Each year, a key issue in research is high-

lighted. The Research Week is compulsory for first-year MFA students, students in Year 2

can choose how to join in.

Electives

Weeks 10-11, 2017

Each spring, 1- or 2-week-long Electives are offered by departments at Konstfack for first-

year Master’s students from all programmes. More information about the topics and selection

procedure will be available during the autumn on the Intranet. MFA Design students must se-

lect their Electives in consultation with their teachers and according to their Study Plan.

Friday Lectures

14:00-16:00 Fridays

One part of Vice-Chancellor Maria Lantz' vision for Konstfack is to involve critical thinking

into sharp artistic practice. In line with this ambition, a series of talks called Friday Lectures

run throughout the year with the aim to give Masters students an unexpected, yet inspirational

education experience and encounters with dynamic speakers. Students are required to attend a

number of these lectures during their studies and to report on these within MFA Design

courses. Check the Intranet calendar for dates.

Free-standing / Professional Courses

There are a number of freestanding courses offered by departments at Konstfack, aimed at

professionals but also of relevance to enrolled students. These courses have their own applica-

tion deadlines, admissions requirements and award credits. Interested MFA Design students

may discuss with their teachers.

Programme Literature

Literature will be assigned within Courses and Modules. Some core literature may be shared

and integrated into the programme in Year 2.

ATLAS, Study Plan and Examinations

The pedagogical approach of the MFA-Design Programme is to support students in develop-

ing their own projects, body of work and future vision of the field. The programme provides

structures in the form of courses and modules – within these, students have much flexibility to

develop themselves and their work, in dialogue with their teachers. To guide the process, the

programme uses two pedagogical tools: the student ‘ATLAS’ and ‘Study Plan’. These tools

are developed throughout the two years of study, and supported by teachers in courses, mod-

ules and interest groups. These tools are also used as part of assessment during Examinations.

ATLAS (Academic Portfolio)

By ‘ATLAS’, we refer to the ‘academic portfolio’ that each student creates. As an academic

portfolio, the ATLAS contains academic materials in addition to the kinds of documentation

of student’s design work that are typically found in a professional portfolio. The Study Plan

(see below) is one such academic material and is an important part of the ATLAS. The

ATLAS collects plans as well as documentation – thus, it is a kind of ‘orienteering’ tool for

students during their 2 years of study. The ATLAS should demonstrate and communicate the

student’s progress and growth throughout their MFA.

The term ATLAS should suggest a highly visual representation. It may be physical, or digital,

and in many shapes, sizes and materials – this is up to the student. However, the ATLAS must

be captured in a digital format for teachers to be able to review periodically (for example, Ex-

aminations, see below). There are dedicated moments throughout the programme for students

to discuss, create and update their ATLAS, in an iterative way.

There should be 3 layers of information in a student’s ATLAS:

(1) Study Plan: The Study Plan states learning goals of the student, connected to the kind of

designer they wish to become and a concrete plan of study.

(2) Examples: Documentation of design work from courses and other relevant activities dur-

ing their studies demonstrate how the Study Plan is explored and achieved. These can in-

clude reflections in various forms (visual or written journals, essays, mind-maps, etc.).

Course- and project-work should be connected to reflections, in order to show connec-

tions between action and reflection, as well as ‘red threads’ through the student’s work.

(3) Time dimension: The ATLAS should show development over time. This can include pro-

cesses and ‘red threads’ traced over time. The ATLAS as a whole should relate to the

kind of designer the student wishes to become in the future, as in the Study Plan. The

ATLAS should be in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent materials.

This is a basic guide for an ATLAS – students can deviate from this if their work demands it.

This must be discussed and agreed with their teachers.

Study Plan

Each student in the specialisation InD will prepare, follow and update their own Study Plan

during the programme. The Study Plan is the student’s tool for expressing what kind of de-

signer they want to become, connecting this concretely to courses in the programme and ac-

tivities at the school, as well as the changing field of design. The Study Plan outlines the stu-

dent’s view of their present and future design practice, short- and long-term learning goals

and skills to be developed. These should be connected to a plan for their work within courses

and modules, as well as School-wide activities such as Skillshops and Electives. Extracurricu-

lar study trips, internships and other relevant activities can be included. The Study Plan is al-

ways a work-in-progress, to be discussed periodically within the student’s teachers and Exam-

iners. The Study Plan should be periodically updated and updated versions should be in the

student’s ATLAS.

Examinations and Reviews

In MFA-Design Programme, teachers and students will explore various ways of discussing,

reviewing and critiquing course work, individually and in groups. Over time, and especially

in Year 2, students should gain skills and initiatives to support and give advice to one another.

Our goal is to together create a constructive and creative culture of critique.

There are several moments of formal Review and Examination in Year 1 and Year 2. More

information, including preparation, procedures and assessment criteria will be provided.

Get Started!

The programme starts on Monday, August 29, 2016, according to information that you should

have received already. The first days are important in order for us to get a common start to-

gether! The first days include information, introductions to the faculty, getting your photo

taken and other practical activities. You can arrange your workspace. Later in the week you

can bring the tools and belongings you are familiar to work with. We will have an introduc-

tion to the programme and you will get to know the rest of the class. We will discuss your dif-

ferent backgrounds and interests, and we will launch into the first course that explores differ-

ent ways of seeing and doing design.

Student Registration

At the beginning of each semester, each student must register. Registration is done on the

starting day of term in Vita Havet, or you can register with the Student office/course adminis-

trator. This is important because unregistered students may have problems with Student Loans

(CSN) and are not covered by the school insurance. Students who do not pass a course must

re-register on the course to get another chance to make up for missing credits.

Inpass Tag

Tags to enter Konstfack are distributed at the beginning of the school year. Entry tags are also

used for printers. Please contact the reception or email Inpass immediately if you lose your

tag. A new tag costs 100: -. The tag must be returned to reception after graduation.

Computer Log-in

Students get a username and password when registering. Registration is done on the first day

in Vita Havet, or, later, at reception. Students show a valid ID and sign a liability. Activate

your account by logging in on any PC at Konstfack. Computer room D3 is available through-

out the Startup Week. You can change your password after logging in the first time.

General Information

Konstfack Then and Now

Konstfack is the largest university college of arts, crafts and design in Sweden. Each year, al-

most 1000 students are enrolled. Konstfack has a long history - here are a few key moments:

1844: Nils Månsson Mandelgren, artist and ethnologist, started the Söndags-Ritskola för

Hantverkare (Sunday Drawing School for Artisans). During their free time, apprentices would

be given the opportunity to learn, for example, ornamental and freehand drawing. Nine differ-

ent trades were represented in the first group, amongst them tiled stove makers and silk weav-

ers. The following year the school was handed over to the newly started Svenska

Slöjdföreningen (Swedish Association of Handicrafts), today known as Svensk Form).

1857: Sofi Granberg and Matilda Andersson, the first two female students began their studies

during the autumn; other female students were officially welcomed the following year.

1859: The school became a national school and the name was changed to Slöjdskolan i Stock-

holm (Handicraft School in Stockholm) a few years later.

1879: The school’s name was changed to Tekniska Skolan (The Technical School), and it was

reorganized to include four different departments.

1945: Konstfack was created with departments for textiles, decorative art, sculpture, ceramics,

furniture and interior design, metal and advertising and printing. The school obtained an offi-

cial status and had a two-year day school and a three-year arts and craft evening school.

1959: The school moved into new premises designed by Gösta Åbergh and Tage Hertzell in

Stockholm where the students enjoyed well-equipped workshops.

1978: The school became a college of higher education and in 1993 it changed its’ name to

Konstfack.

2004: Konstfack moved into new premises. L M Ericssons old telephone factory in the Stock-

holm suburb of Hägersten has been refurbished to provide a modern school.

2014: MFA-Design programme is established! The programme combines knowledge, re-

sources and Master’s students of the Interior Architecture and Industrial Design departments.

Student Union

The Student Union is an independent organisation governed by elected student representa-

tives. The Student Union’s board is responsible for representing student interests and helping

create an interesting study and social climate at Konstfack. The Union is also responsible for

yoga, ping-pong table, Lucia breakfast, lending of sofas, fridges, PA-system and more. The

Student Union Office is next to the restaurant. Student fee of 300:- each semester, 300:- can

Presence and Leave from Studies

• Your studies are full-time. Scheduled teaching is compulsory unless otherwise indicated.

• To begin Year 2, students are required to have passing grades in courses equivalent to at

least 45 credits at advanced level. See the Konstfack Rules and regulations on the intranet

• Leave from studies: For short periods of leave during a course, please speak to the

Course/Module Leader or Programme Responsible. For longer periods, please hand in an ap-

plication form to the Head of Department. Valid reasons for a leave, with a guaranteed place

on re-entry, include sickness, parental leave or military service. Others may resume studies

only if a place is available. For leave during autumn semester, please apply by 15 April, for

leave during spring semester, apply by 30 September. Apply to resume studies by April 15.

Twice a year students and teachers at Konstfack can apply for scholarships from the founda-

Programme Council

(Ämnesråd = ÄR) Students are invited to be representatives in the Programme council (ÄR).

ÄR is the advisory board of the programme. The advisory board prepares questions on overall

content and quality issues in the training and also looks at other things that are related to this,

such as recruiting profiles, resource allocation issues. ÄR consists of professor, teachers, stu-

dent representatives and representatives from the profession. ÄR makes suggestions to the

head of department, who will make the final decisions. Student representatives have an im-

portant and appreciated role in shaping the current and future programme.

Special Needs

Konstfack is working to improve the situation for students with dyslexia, ADHD and other

disabilities. It is important that students who have a disability formulate their need for support

in the study situation. Support is offered in consultation with Konstfack’s coordinator for stu-

dents with disabilities at the Student Office. Students with dyslexia can check at the library

for help with borrowing from scanned literature and access to audio-recorded literature.

Spring Semester Cleaning

• Studio Space: Two or three weeks before the end of the spring semester, all students must

clean up and store or take home their belongings. Larger objects to be thrown away should be

taken to the delivery area (beside the carpentries). Over the summer break, you may store

things at your own risk in your black cabinet and on top of your desk. The desks must be

cleaned before you put material on top, and must be secured in case desks are moved. Mark

your things, including the cabinet, with your name, year-class, and phone number. Graduating

students must take their things away when they leave.

• Workshops: All parts of the wood workshop must be cleared of student work. This applies

also to the storage of works-in-progress during terms. You must therefore – in good time be-

fore the end of the semester – take out your belongings. Exceptions from this rule must be

agreed well before the end of semester.

Spring Party!

Near the end of the academic year, Konstfack arranges a common party for students and staff.

The students at each department are responsible according to the routines below:

• Students in each department make a budget and collect a reasonable sum from each partici-

pant (i.e. 120 SEK) and then collaborate to prepare food, desert, decorations and laying the

tables. Everybody helps clear the premises and get rid of garbage afterwards.

Facilities

Your course work will be carried out primarily in your studio space, in classrooms, and in

specialized facilities and workshops. Classrooms are located all over Konstfack, primarily

along ”Seminariegatan”. More information is below and on the Intranet.

Studio Space

Students get their own desk space to sit together with their own class in the IA or ID studios.

There are also common spaces in the studios for which students are responsible. Respect these

spaces in terms of cleanliness, noise, and by participating in common clean-up activities.

Library

Konstfack boasts one of Sweden's most comprehensive art and design libraries with a wealth

of professional and scholarly books, magazines and journals, reference databases, internet ac-

cess, classrooms, a video lounge, a materials library and a staff of helpful librarians. You can

place interlibrary loans for books in other libraries. Books can be checked out self-service us-

ing your Inpass Tag.

Computer Labs

At Konstfack there are around 15 Computer Labs housing both Mac and PC computers, and

IA and ID each have dedicated Computer Labs. Some of the Computer Labs have alarms.

Student Kitchens

All programmes have student kitchens for cooking your own food. Please respect your own

and others space by keeping tables, dishes, dish-rack, microwaves and stoves clean. Dish-

washing soap, brushes, etc. is free at the Reception. Mark your food in the refrigerator and

cupboards with your name (unmarked food will be thrown away). If there are concerns about

this, contact the assistant teacher or the assigned group for kitchen order (”ansvarsgrupp”).

Borrowed tableware from the canteen must be returned.

Lockers

You may borrow a locker (they are situated under the mezzanine ”Entresol”) but you need to

buy your own lock. Do not keep any expensive things in the lockers! Empty your locker, re-

move name-tags and leave it unlocked when you finish your studies at Konstfack.

Loaning Equipment

There is some equipment to be used by teachers and students for coursework. This can in-

clude digital projectors, laptops, a DVD player, digital cameras, digital video camera, tripod,

TV, slide projectors, and an audio system. Please contact Lars Ernholm for questions of book-

Printers

Printing is possible from all printers in the school, including several in IA/ID and in the media

block. Students pay for all their print-outs in advance by loading an amount of money onto

the Inpass Tag. This can be paid in cash or credit/debit card at Reception.

Workshops

There is probably no other art and design university college in Europe with such well-

equipped workshops as Konstfack. These include Computer Labs, Wood and Metal Work-

shops, Screen-Printing and Textile-Printing facilities, a Weaving Room, Color Workshop,

Graphics Workshop, photographic and TV studios, Glassworks, Ceramics Workshop and

Sculpture and Painting Studios. The workshops allow crafts to be produced in many different

materials and allow you to use experimental, and high-tech methods, to challenge existing

boundaries. The workshops are organized to facilitate the material, form and spatial experi-

ments, production of prototypes and models. The machine layout is planned to carry out par-

ticular sequences of procedures. There are some courses in which teaching is conducted di-

rectly in the workshops, experimenting with theory-practice relations. Workshop staff have

long-experience and excellent competence.

MFA-Design students will primarily use the workshops of the Interior Architecture and In-

dustrial Design departments.

Access

‘Driver’s license’ Certification

A ‘driver’s license’ is earned by each student upon completion of an approved Workshop

course and a signature of the Workshop rules. Then, the student is certified to use workshop

equipment.

Hours

Machines should be turned off after 22:00. For the rules and for your own safety, avoid using

machinery and equipment after hours.

Inpass Tag Lock

Machines connect to an Inpass Tag-reader, which switches on electrical current to the ma-

chine. The electricity stays on for 90 minutes after log-in. Before it turns off, there is a sound

and light alert.

Students certified to run the machines at IA and ID can log in but there must be two people

who log-in directly after one another. This is to diminish the risk that someone works alone

with the machines. The rule is that there must be three persons present while working with the

machines.

As long as a student is logged-in, they are responsible for the workshop. To leave before the

electricity switches off after 90 minutes, the student must first log out by pressing the current

switch near the Tag-reader. Certified have access to the entry door, storage space for work-in-

progress, and tool storage.

Security/Fire Doors

All doors with Tag-readers must be closed before 8.00 and after 17.00 on weekdays and all

weekends and holidays. If not, a security company is automatically called and costs incurred.

The doors are for fire safety and to prevent theft.

Materials

Many types of solid wood, common prefabricated board and foamboard are in the workshop

stocks for sale. Clay is available in the ID Workshop, which must be purchased if used out-

side the workshop.

For some board materials not in our ordinary stocks, the IA and ID workshop can make the

requisition for you upon pre-payment. Speak to the Workshop Staff.

For other materials, such as large pieces, veneer or special types, students make the purchase

themselves.

Left-over materials in the bins are available (and free).

Payment for Materials

Payment for materials is made at the school´s “Reception and Office Supply Sales”. Cost is

calculated according to price lists in the workshop when material is selected. Purchases and

requisitions are made 09.00-12.00 and 13.00-16.00.

Material to be used for educational purposes is exempt from VAT (moms/tax). VAT has to be

paid on material for other purposes. Students may not invoice Konstfack or use Konstfack on

an invoice for private purchases and for things intended for sale – student’s home address

should be used on such invoices. Konstfack can be used as a delivery address only, and stu-

dents take responsibility for materials delivered for their private use.

Workshop Ethics

Commit to keeping a good work environment and take part in the systematic work environ-

ment program (SAM) running at Konstfack. As a student, you actively contribute to making a

health and safe work environment a priority, so that no one face risks in the short or long

term.

Cleaning and Refuse

Out of respect for your own work, health and safety, and that of others, take care of the work-

shops and machines. Machines, benches and spaces should be kept in good order during work

and must be cleaned directly after use. Each student must organize and clean for themselves.

It is part of the education to develop and demonstrate professional conduct in the workshops!

Sawdust and other dust should be removed with the central vacuum cleaner where available.

The floors of the workshop are vacuumed each day by the cleaning staff, so students must re-

move work and rubbish from the floor.

Loaning Tools

Tools and machines should be returned to their proper places so that they are always ready for

others. It is thus forbidden to borrow tools from the workshop without first talking to staff.

Safety

There are rules for using the Workshops and machines safely - these are for your own protec-

tion and that of people nearby. The rules are designed with great care, based on experience of

accident-prevention and health consideration.

Ventilation and other installations at Konstfack are designed for the materials and substances

within these rules. It is therefore absolutely forbidden to use any other material, as this can

cause fire and explosions.

Faults in security doors, machines or other equipment, or lack of equipment, must be immedi-

ately reported to workshop staff. Faults can cause accidents.

Personal Safety Equipment

Each student must use this equipment:

1. Respiratory mask with dust- and gas filter

2. Particle filter

3. Protective gloves (as needed)

4. Protective goggles

5. Hearing protection

6. Appropriate clothing

Personal safety equipment can be purchased from the school´s “Reception and Office Supply

Sales” – students should put their name on their equipment! There may be spare common

equipment available in the workshops as well.

Machine Safety

Machines can only be used by ‘driver’s license’-certified students. Some equipment can only

be used when the workshop staff are present.

Instructions and rules at each machine must be followed.

At all Workshops at Konstfack, blue signs indicate both general rules and specific rules to

each machine. Everyone has a responsibility to learn and follow the rules.

Machine-specific rules and protection equipment must always be followed. Existing protec-

tion on the machines should under no circumstances be removed.

Do not use protective gloves at machines that rotate, as the gloves can get caught.

Three persons have to be present when machine work is done, so they can take care of an in-

jured person and call for help at the same time.

It is important that machine work is done within school hours. Fatigue is a very common fac-

tor in accidents. Never work with machines when you have not had sufficient rest.

Tools and hand machines are kept in cabinets or locked tool rooms, where they are stored.

When you are the last to leave, you must check this. If you wish to take tools or machines out-

side the workshop, consult workshop staff.

Safe Materials

Only approved materials can be used on the premises. Materials or substances obtained pri-

vately must be approved by workshop staff before use.

All substances used and stored must first be properly documented with product information

leaflets kept in a special register at the workshop. Product information leaflets can be re-

quested upon purchase or found on the Internet.

In the IA painting room and spray box, use only approved water-based paints, lacquer, var-

nishes and certain waxes and oil-based products.

In the ID painting room, spray-painting must be used in one of the Lacquer workshops. Only

water-based paints can be used in the IA workshop. There is no paint-mixing system, students

can only use spray cans from approved sources (registered in ‘Klara’), namely the Montana

brand. Students buy their own spray paint.

Harmful products containing organic dissolvent of the type aromatic carbon hydrates or for

example acid-catalyzed lacquer and cured plastics are forbidden for use in any of the work-

shop premises, as well as thinner and turpentine, which can quickly cause dizziness, fatigue

and headache, in the longer run chronic diseases and birth defects.

Linseed oil-based products can only be used with the consent of and in cooperation with staff

to prevent self-ignition. Self-ignition can happen when the oil is stored with rags or other po-

rous materials. This is a common cause of fire.

Paints, varnishes and solvents are highly flammable. Therefore it is absolutely forbidden to

smoke, light a match in the Workshop, it is highly dangerous. Paints, glues and chemicals

must be stored in special designated places only.

All custom paints and solvents must be stored in the Ventilated lockers. If such substances are

stored elsewhere, the school has the right to confiscate them.

Hot-forming of materials must take place in the workshop with the exception of “car clay",

“Indiclay” and Vacuum-forming. From a safety, labor and environmental perspective, hot-

forming should be used with the workshop equipment.

Fire Prevention

Fire doors must not be left open, or fires can spread. Evacuation paths must be kept free and

unblocked, as premises may fill with smoke during a fire and make it difficult to find the way

out.

The building is divided into fire zones and security/fire doors automatically close at fire

alarm. Doors must never be blocked or kept open, for example with floor wedges.
