The list of "2014 Taiwan Top 20 Global Brands" was revealed in December. Delta ranks 13th, up four places from 2013, and its brand value was enhanced by 24%, making it the fastest-growing enterprise. During their visit with us, Interbrand, the agency in charge of the ranking, commented that Delta has a great grasp of global trends for industry growth and has been continuing to strengthen its positioning as a provider of energy-saving solutions, which contributed to its persistent growth. They also shared with us international brand trends and offered observations and suggestions for the Taiwan brands overall. We will have a full coverage in the issue of Brand News.

Delta's participation in public affair has always been an important factor of the brand's image. During the United Nation COP20 conference for climate change at the end of last year, Delta Electronics Foundation successfully co-hosted a side event with international organizations. Our colleagues from the foundation presented to over 200 international officials and scholars the case of the green campus in Minquan Elementary School of Namasia District, rebuiltby Delta. The event exemplified our partnership with important organizations with international renown for the climate and environment protection. It received high recognition from attendees and the press.

After interviews of Delta's worldwide regional heads in 2013 and corporate function heads in 2014, this year's "Brand People" will feature branded BG/BU heads. The first issue starts with Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG). Under the leadership of Mr. Simon Chang, IABG has enjoyed the fastest growth in Delta. There will be a special coverage with his sharing of important milestones for IABG and its directions for future growth.

Developed on its own by IABG, Delta's SCARA robot made its debut toward the end of last year during China International Industry Fair in Shanghai and SPS in Nuremberg, Germany, garnering attentions from the industry. The official launch of SCARA last month also received positive feedbacks. What kind of challenges did IA team encounter during the R&D phase of the robot? What special applications and competitive advantages does SCARA feature? This issue of "Special Report" will take an in-depth look into these robots.

In response to increased usage of mobile devices by many managers and colleagues as the reading vehicle, the "Brand News" will be presented differently starting this issue. In addition to a fresher design and layout, we have included the "digital version" that also enables video content. Hope you will have a more convenient reading experience.

pecial Report Delta launches SCARA Robot Solution

< Text by IABG >

When walking into Delta's power supply production bases, people cannot miss the industrial automation products completing the gluing process during conveyance of 24.8 million power supplies every year. The secret is IABG's Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA) robot solution which was just launched in January.

According to actual application results and analysis, the SCARA robot solution improves daily productivity by nearly three times, shortens production time and cycles, and greatly reduces required manpower. But when speaking of birth of SCARA robot, we need to trace back to 2012.

During July of that year, Delta was about to prepare detailed plans for developing the robot. Mr. Peter Peng, GM of A-Tech System that was well-known in the field of automated industrial control in Taiwan, as well as its team on automation, were invited to join Delta’s IABG around the same time to work on R&D of robotic arms and the area related to automation robotics.

pecial Report

"Robots and automation are indispensable to each other and cannot be treated separately," remarked firmly and briefly by Mr. Peng. "Scales and forms involved in automation are usually large, with a high percentage of customization. As a result, our first challenge was to carry out standardization on our current products as much as possible based on currently-available experiences, trends in the market, and opinions of customers, so that most of the customers would be able to directly put in application."

Integrating its own capabilities to get a firm standTo reach market standard as quickly as possible, SCARA underwent half a year in R&D and was introduced to Delta's IA assembly line at its Taoyuan Plant 1 in 2013, where verifications on the technology and system were conducted directly inside the plant. With continuous improvement, it has now been largely applied to the assembly line for automation and mobile power supply products in Delta's Wujiang plant, which helped enhance defect-free rate and reduce human cost. The main reason behind this successful development of SCARA was because Delta managed to possess key technologies that were superior in the industry.

"We utilized key components of Delta's own in automation, along with user interface, system integration, and technological services that did the best to simplify processes and difficulties for customers to introduce automation robotics," Mr. Peng further explained. "SCARA was mainly applied to 3C manufacturing. By combining features in detection, such as vision, touch, and optical sensing, from Delta automation, operations and processes could be adjusted precisely in response to status of the assembly line, ensuring safety of personnel and smooth production work. Ordinary manufacturers of robots join suite to dig into R&D of technologies for mechanical arms. However, Delta products will be integrated directly with applications in assembly lines to provide what industry clients need."

"We're facing a turning point in the manufacturing industry," said IABG's GM Mr. Simon Chang. "Current market trends demand short commodity cycles and variety, and high precision manufacturing; however, we’re facing some major issues such as low production line flexibility and lack of a labor force. Delta SCARA will help

customers to precisely control production quality and realize flexible and variable manufacturing for customization, which will enhance their competitiveness."

To improve quality and accumulate field applicationsDelta's SCARA DRS40L Series features excellent speed, repeatability, linearity and verticality with a maximum load of 3kg and arm length of 400mm. The compl iance control function of the DRS40L Series can compensate the deviation between workpieces and inser tion holes. It helps the DRS40L Series precisely complete insertion, assembly, screw locking, transferring, and packaging. The automatic process path planning function of the DRS40L Series perfectly meets the requi rements of synchronized t rack ing applications, such as processes for gluing, deburring, and soldering. With a Machine Vision System, the DRS40L Series is also able to identify defective products and categorize them, greatly improving yield rate and quality.

At the launch event, Delta showcased a real-time remote monitoring of Delta's motor rotor production line in Taoyuan Plant 1 on the central control wall in the Taoyuan Technology Center. In addition, Delta presented three demo sets that demonstrated compliance control for components insertion, simulated the production processes of gluing, coating and polishing, and performed flexible transferring, stacking, and packing without fixtures.

Looking forward to 2015, SCARA will undergo further upgrades to focus on features in plug-in components and assembly. It will also take initiatives in developing clients in system integration and gradually move into target industry and application. For IABG, the ultimate goal is to make future products and technologies in automation robotics more intelligent, with lower requirement on introduction and more user-friendliness and safety to enhance effectiveness in industry-based production and become the best partner for the clients.

• DSBU presents diners with a wonderful "Heavenly Lotus Feast"

Heavenly Lotus Feast - a combination of technology, art and dining< Text by DSBU >

How should technology integrate with art? How should projection technology be applied to food and beverage industry? Delta DSI's clever design successfully blended modern projection technology into classical garden building, and served diners with a spectacular "Heavenly Lotus Feast".

Located in Pingjiang's historical district of Suzhou, Wang Xiao Hui Art Museum is rebuilt from Ding residence, a Ming Dynasty architecture. By bringing in international cultural figures to promote Suzhou cultural and creative industries, it aimed to serve as a leading role for others to follow. Lotus is an important element of Wang Xiao Hui's recent works, and the art museum made use of lotus installations with different materials as its theme, running through the entire building. "Heavenly Lotus Feast" is another unique artistic expression for presenting the theme of lotus. It aimed to offer the audience a special experience through simultaneous changes of delicacies and projected images. However, restricted by the old building's characteristics, normal projectors had difficulty in obtaining an ideal throw distance. In view of this, Delta DSI, through precise calculation, provided the art museum with a clever solution: under the precondition that the structure's aesthetics is not affected, it was able to successfully hide the projector behind the building's pillars and, together with infrared CCD, bring about interaction between the diners and the projected images. As the projected lotus gradually bloomed, representing the integration of technology and art, a feast where lighting blends with delicacies is presented to the audience.

Pioneering the Delta brand – Industrial AutomationAn interview with Mr. Simon Chang, IABG General Manager

In 2015 we will focus on interviewing the heads of the business group/business units (BG/BU) that are pioneering

Delta's branding efforts. For the first issue, we start with the Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG). Under

the leadership of IABG General Manager Mr. Simon Chang, the industrial automation (IA) team has enjoyed fast

and extensive growth. In this issue of "Brand People", Mr. Chang shares IABG's important milestones

and direction for future development.

In late September 2014 when the burning hot sunlight in the U.S.'s Mohave Desert made it hard for people to visit, undeterred IABG General Manager Mr. Simon Chang still headed for the world's largest single tower Concentrated Solar Power Plant system that consists of more than 10 thousand heliostats (two axis solar tracking mirrors), and a large heat exchanger receiver that is capable of generating 500 Million Kilowatt hours per year. In fact, the automated concentrated solar power solution utilized in this system comes from Delta.

"We were the least well-known among all competing companies," said Mr. Chang who cannot hold his excitement when talking about this recent success case for IABG. "Delta actually bore higher costs than other competitors but still managed to be successfully awarded the project. The key to which lied on 'efficiency' and 'accuracy'. Delta's controller solution required the least amount of power. Even though the costs for initial setup of the system were higher, the client company was still willing to select Delta after taking into consideration the 30 years of costs in operation. This is what I often said about the 'Outside In' approach, in which we should learn about what customers care about and turn back from their end benefits to see what solutions Delta could offer to add value for them."

"When managing a brand, pursuing a high cost/performance value is not enough. Most important is to know about the customers' needs, as they are the ones who decide on a brand's positioning and value."

This is Mr. Chang's best way of defining "branding" after spending 20 years working hard to build Delta IA's reputation in the industry.

Creating Delta's B2B brandingBack in 1995 when the Delta IA Business Unit (IABU) was officially established, the first task was to develop a frequency convertor that matched Delta's needs and could also be sold to customers. Leading a team of five that included himself, Mr. Chang, as an engineer, set a goal to develop a product that was less expensive than its Japanese counterparts, but more

eople stable. He thought it was not that difficult of a task. "However, there were only four thousand sold during the first year," recalled Mr. Chang with an awkward smile.

The cold response from the market made Mr. Chang face reality. The world market for automation equipment at that time was dominated by Japanese manufacturers. There was a large gap in technology where Taiwanese manufacturers needed to catch up. Delta had no experience producing automation equipment, and its price did not win favor from clients.

To make Delta better known, Mr. Chang implemented a "free trial" to help generate its reputation in the market. He also worked in multiple roles, such as general manager, business representative, and engineer, to help clients tune their machines in person. Since starting the IABU, Delta has insisted on building up its own capabilities in R&D, design, and manufacturing. This would allow the a local R&D team to respond to clients' needs in time and implement changes in designs, making it more time-effective than its Japanese competitors and offering an advantage to Delta's business. With thoughtful service, Delta gradually won the trust of clients. "Delta's current B2B branding was developed step-by-step," said Mr. Chang.

The IABU's goal was to treat China as a home market and gradually build a firm foundation for entering the global market. At the beginning of its development, Delta's competitors were mostly large international brands. As a result, Delta decided to sell in China with its own brands and build its brand image directly.

Solidifying the brand Delta IA started with frequency convertors. In 1999, when China's economy was rising along with a rapid increase in labor wages, the demand for automation equipment began to grow. Mr. Chang took this opportunity to extend its supply chain for frequency convertors to controller products such as programmable logic controllers (PLC), which was a big leap toward the integration of automation systems.

From 2000 to 2010 was a decade of growth for IABU, with its points of sales in China rapidly increasing and expanding inland. The majority of industrial cities in China are now within reach. In Europe and America, it established more than 30 points of sales, with the number of worldwide distributors close to 300.

"We utilized the ODM/OEM business model to cooperate with well-known international manufacturers and enhance Delta's strength in R&D technologies," said Mr. Chang firmly when speaking of the IA growth strategy. "We developed our sales channels in Europe and America to continue strengthening our presence in those rising markets, where we could enter with a higher cost-performance ratio." To reach a certain level of economies of scale, IABU placed equal weight on both ODM and OBM, with its product lines expanding in the fields of Drive, Motion, and Control.

To spread the reputation of its brand, the IA team has participated in both domestic and international trade shows since 2001 At Hannover Messe in Germany, the world's largest industry trade show, Mr. Chang would personally lead the team to find and land prospects. At the beginning, Delta had only a small booth, but managed to gradually expand the scale of its participation and make the Delta brand better known.

Transformation to a primary focus on OBM After 2010, the IABU entered a period of transformation developing products to focus on providing systematic solutions. It also started to develop products for industrial networking. In the future, it hopes to offer solutions for target markets and locating suitable system integrators (SI) to gradually expand its markets. The aim is to become familiar with control systems and architectures of an even larger size.

eople "Establishing loyalty to the brand from customers" is a goal that IA has long strived for. During this period of transformation, IA will operate with a primary focus on OBM and secondary emphasis on ODM. It will promote the Delta brand by continuing to participate in events such as large international trade shows, media coverage, and partnerships with schools. "What we are working on is our brand and systems integration," said Mr. Chang confidently. "The value might not be immediately apparent. However, from a long-term perspective, automation is definitely the trend."

Merger with Syn-Tek in 2013 To strengthen IA's development in motion control solutions, Delta carried out a merger with Syn-Tek in 2013 to help accelerate Delta's becoming a supplier of comprehensive motion control solutions. Established for nearly ten years, Syn-Tek specialized in the design of motion cards, high-speed communication cards such as DMCNET and EtherCat, and PC-based programmable automation controllers (PAC). Its long R&D of technologies provides a certain level of understanding of the market.

"This partnership with Syn-Tek is complementary; with Syn-Tek providing technologies and products while Delta helps in market entry. Motion control development should have users' needs in mind. R&D and actual testing should take place after getting a better understanding of customers' needs. We enhance the marketability of products and then promote them externally."

The fourth industrial revolution: the robot ageFor the future of automation, Mr. Chang thinks that "the fourth industrial revolution is already taking place". He refers to the current popularity of robots in industry. The increase in cost and shortages of staff is accompanied by a dramatic decrease in the cost of automation, Mr. Chang estimated that robots will be widely used in every industry within 5 to 10 years. No matter if it's manufacturing or the service sector-even light industry will gradually introduce robots to their production. With abilities in identifying and learning, future robots will be capable of working with operators, bringing changes to production processes. In addition, the evolution in control and management of the system will contribute to the emergence of an intelligent factory, where one-stop automation will be performed by a dedicated robot. Simple conventional tasks that are now done by humans will be assigned to robots. Tasks that are more complex and cannot be automated will be left to human work.

Delta's own SCARA industrial robot made its debut during the China International Industry Fair in Shanghai and at the SPS IPC Drives show in Nuremberg toward the end of 2014. By combining a special controller and machine vision system developed by Delta, a fully automated pick-and-place solution featuring high precision, high speed, and intelligence was created for wide application in processing work pieces and curves from uneven shapes, which demonstrated Delta's innovation ability.

Delta IA, a provider of total solutionsIn the next 20 years, Delta IA will have two major goals: First, it will thoroughly develop target industries and continue to plan from a systems perspective. Delta will learn about its customers' operating procedures, so that it can solve customer issues in automation and provide industry-based solutions to secure a position in the market. Second, Delta will continue to reinforce its line of automation products. In the future, it will integrate Delta's excellent R&D capabilities in the industrial domain, so that its line of automation products will be more complete. Together with his team, Mr. Chang hopes to lead Delta IA on a path toward becoming 'a provider in world-class industrial automation solutions".

y Taiwan's best brands and international brand trends

< Text by Brand Management Office >

The 2014 Taiwan Top 20 Global Brands were revealed at an awards ceremony last December, with Delta ranking 13th, up four places since 2013, and its brand value enhanced by 24%. Interbrand, the agency in charge of the ranking, shared international brand trends and offered observations and suggestions for Taiwan brands at the event.

Branding development worldwide Among the ranking of world's top hundred brands in 2014, there were two important phenomena observed. First, U.S. brands still represent the majority (53%), but no longer monopolize the rankings as before. Second, the industries represented by the brands in this ranking show a trend of diversification. Interbrand's general manager in China, Darren Yao, mentioned that great changes have occurred this year since the start of the survey on the world's top one hundred brands. Asian brands such as Samsung and Huawei have risen quickly, while leading U.S. brands such as Coca Cola and IBM have been replaced by Apple and Google. Mr. Yao also shared Interbrand's opinions on worldwide branding development.

Global brands have experienced four ages. The first age was Brand Identity, when brands mainly served as symbols to differentiate companies. Brands functioned as differentiator and identifier. The most notable phenomenon was that new brands/symbols would constantly appear as options (products/services) increased. The ultimate goal for managing a brand was to establish brand awareness. In terms of organization, the unit in charge of managing a brand served one function in a marketing department and communication for the brand was only one-way. Evolving with time, the branding development entered into a second age of Value, where the importance of managing a brand had gradually becoming apparent. The brand became an important asset for development of the enterprise and communication of the brand also evolved into a two-way mode. More resources were devoted to studying consumers. Among these efforts, a successful brand usually had an in-depth understanding of the behaviors of customers and the value it created for customers. As functions of the brand gradually manifested, branding began to influence business strategies during this age.

Further evolution of the branding ageAs information technology evolved, the development in branding also moved into a whole new phase, which is the age of Experience. This was most apparent when spots in the world's top hundred brands were taken by Apple and Google. In this age, rights to decision making has moved from the brand company to consumers or end-users. The organization of the enterprise also became more centered on consumer experience. Due to the rapid development in information technology, the age of experience has also advanced to version 2.0. Data humanization fur ther reinforced a living and contextual experience that is digitalized. Consumers and end-users can even carry out two-way communication to create an experience of the product and service of the brand company. Interbrand terms this approach two-way collaboration and innovation. The branding functions evolve from creation and management of brand identity, and assessment and management of brand value, to integration for a seamless brand experience.

The fourth age, a soon-to-emerge future trend, will be the age of You. The five keys in information technology will be personalization, personal branding through digitalization, predictive intelligence, always being in Beta, and contextual magic. In addition, brand functions will penetrate into business decision making and become the core of long-term strategies. The ultimate goal of a brand company is to create a personalized and customized mode of business.

Observations and suggestions for the development of Taiwan brands In addition to sharing his observations on the development of brands worldwide, Mr. Yao also offered his advice for developing Taiwan brands. First, industrial supply chains will continue to undergo a reduction in length. In the future, as more Taiwanese enterprises become situated at the end of the industry chain, they will have to pay more attention to end-customers. Second, large enterprises and small companies will develop at two extremes. Large and fully-sourced enterprises will need to devote larger amounts of capital; while small and efficient companies can utilize their entrepreneurial spirit and core competitiveness to discover new opportunities for brand development. Third, most Taiwanese enterprises in the past have focused on manufacturing. In the future, however, they will have to focus on products. Fourth, the requirements for products has shifted from functions and features to brand experience, the key to which rests on the pursuit of perfection, human nature, and simplicity. Fifth, there is one more meaning for the term innovation that we often speak of, which is ultimately its orientation to human nature.

For the 2014 ranking of Taiwan's top 20 international brands, Mr. Yao offered further explanation of Interbrand's observations and suggestions: the five "mosts". Information technology is still the industry type that occupies most spots in the ranking. The rise of brands enjoys the greatest extent of improvement. The range of industries covered was the largest. There is the highest potential for embracing

The four ages of worldwide branding development

digitalized brands. Newest in the rankings was industry related to concepts of health and well-being. Among his remarks, Mr. Yao also specifically mentioned Delta's outstanding performance.

Expectations for Delta brand developmentDuring the brand appraisal for 2014, Delta was the company that enjoyed the fastest growth in brand value (approximately 24%) in three areas considered by Interbrand, including: First, it is deeply entrenched in electronics and electrical industry. Through long-term partnerships with telecom companies, mobile device brands, and data center builders, it has become a solution provider for the telecommunication industry. Second, Delta's dedication to industrial automation anticipates opportunities in the transformation of global industry, which is the main reason it maintains profit growth. Third, by offering a complete data center solution, Delta has become the only company for data center infrastructure in Asia that is capable of providing end-to-end solutions. Finally, Delta has grasped growth trends for industries worldwide while continuing to strengthen its position as a provider of energy-saving solutions that are highly efficient and reliable. By integrating hardware and software technologies, Delta offers customers a better user experience.

As expressed by Delta Chief Brand Officer Ms. Shan-Shan Guo, Delta's approach to its brand strategy is in-sync with the observations and suggestions Interbrand consultants have for Taiwan brands. Starting from creating a unique brand identity, Delta expresses the ideals and values behind its operations and focuses on customers' needs by integrating hardware and software to reinforce the user experience. By starting its plan for brand communication based on the message "Smarter. Greener. Together.", Delta continues to deploy its sales network and service platform throughout the world, strengthening employee understanding of the brand and creating a unique user experience recognized by customers and sales partners.

Mr. Yao offered his suggestions for development of the Delta brand in the future: Continue in-depth communication with the target market by extending from corporate to sector/product level; add more effort to discovering customers' needs and expectations; create a better connection online and offline by providing a consistent brand experience at each point of contact with the customer; and, carry out more communication with end-customers, so the product experience becomes deeply embedded in people's minds.

• Delta is the company that enjoys the fastest growth in brand value (approximately 24%)

Early this year, DGC's media groups from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen gathered in Taipei to begin their six-day "Discover Delta" journey in Taiwan. Different from previous visits, besides showing Delta's strength in technology through visits of Delta's cross-industry success stories, it was hoped that editors from the countries' IT, automation, and projection industries could experience for themselves Delta's commitment in environmental protection.

Low-carbon trip begins before the journeyThough this was the first Delta visit for most members of the media group, living in a metropolis with hazy weather and having a working environment that requires frequent business trips, they were very much in favor of the trip and the "eco journey, green travel" concept. They even actively offered advices and shared their experiences with green travel and tips on low carbon environment.

Bringing their own water bottles, shopping bags, and toiletries are natura l ly common low- carbon actions. Being the organizer of this activity, DGC insisted on not printing materials starting from the event's invitation. Though made in electronic format for the well-designed invitation letters, thoughtful trip reminder, detai led Taipei MRT map, and comprehensive case information, sincerity is not diminished.

Delta not only made use of technology to help realize a better lifestyle, but also made use of technology to assist with improvement on environmental protection.

Be an eco-friendly tourist by blending inGuests of Delta are also guests of Taiwan. During the journey of "Discover Delta", the guests also experienced the beauty of Taiwan. Starting from the fashion capital of Taipei, the group proceeded to the beautiful Yilan, into the mountainous area of Miaoli, and to Sun Moon Lake at Nantou. The editors became eco-friendly visitors during the trip, and besides abiding by local environmental regulations, they also felt the importance Taiwan has attached on environmental friendliness, as well as how it treasures nature.

Yilan's Jimmy Park, located at the south of Yilan Train Station, is one of the favorite attractions among the editors. During the rebuilding project, the historical buildings and old trees were specifically retained. After rebuilding, the formerly abandoned land has become a bright and open recreation area, adding tourism, transport, eco-friendly, and historic preservation values to it. Compared to the transformation pattern of "demolish for redevelopment", this is more environmental friendly and meaningful.

Along the journey, the media group insisted on eating local and seasonal food, such as old time delicacies on Sanyi Wood Carving Street and Yilan's Sanxing spring onion. What they enjoyed was not only the unique flavor, but also the ability to help protect the environment by reducing "food carbon footprint". Low-carbon journey does not mean a tough journey. While enjoying the natural resources and protecting nature through eco-friendly actions, it is a way of giving back as well as gaining from it.

Have the cake and eat it too? The challenges and opportunities to raise newborns in a low-carbon fashion< Text by Wim Chang/ Delta Electronics Foundation >

Two other parenting dads and myself, who similarly work in the area of environmental protection – have welcomed newborns in the past two to three years. This has without a doubt, brought various challenges to our existing lifestyles. To start off - it has already become a huge undertaking to simply maintain the low-carbon living standards we had sustained prior to having the babies.

How much energy does an infant consume? Preparation of hot water for powdered milk begins from the minute she opens her eyes; five baby meals a day consumes at least 1 kilowatt hour of electricity. The end of feeding is in fact the beginning of more energy consumption - first, you start with rinsing the baby bottle with hot water, then you will need proper sterilization of the bottles, finally - the cycle of making powdered milk begins yet again.

The aggregation of energy consumed from these steps has exceeded the energy consumption of my daily computer usage (of more than 12 hours)!

In addition to energy consumption, the demand for non-reusable baby diapers is roughly 6 packs per day – the associated carbon footprint far exceeds that of disposable chopsticks. Not to mention the amount of wet wipes required for baby bottoms, which have amount to a larger quantity than the Kleenex I consume from a really bad cold. The wet wipes often pile up into a small mountain after their bottoms have been properly cleaned.

The aforementioned are straightforward resource consumptions, and have obviously challenged the three of us to find opportunities to reduce carbon footprints in the process.

The Editor-in-chief of the Taiwan Environmental Information Center, Ruei-xiang, whose wife's breast milk is both sufficient and stable - helped reduce the carbon footprint from reliance on imported powdered milk (almost cutting the carbon footprint by at least half the distance across the globe). Nevertheless, whether breast milk feeding is feasible is often times dependent on the individual - and obviously we are in no position to judge, let alone criticize the mothers. On the other hand, Ruei-xiang has also insisted on using clean water to bath the baby, as opposed to using shampoo – for one, it reduces the carbon footprint of using detergents; and two, it lowers the infant's exposure to chemicals.

As for the Secretary of the Society of Wilderness, Dong-Han, his close group of buddies left him with more than enough baby's second-hand clothes (that can supply his child to about four-year old), as well as used, but functional cradles and cribs. He often exposes his child to Mother Nature and avoids the infiltration of 3C products – in fact, whenever I see his latest status on Facebook, I always get the impression that he raises his child in the jungle.

On the other hand, speaking of my own daughters - ever since they were born, half the diapers that they consume are reusable cotton diapers. But because of the amount of water required to clean the cotton diapers, I added another step to my already reengineered pipelines - instead of saving used shower water to flush the toilets, I now use the showered water to clean the diapers first, then use the already used water (from the diapers) to flush toilets.

Now that my daughters are gradually growing up, they have started to apply the habits at home outside of home. My youngest daughter who has just started kindergarten for about two weeks is now aware of the water that runs from the faucet when she washes her hands. She not only reduces the amount of time that the faucet is running, but even turns off the lights after she uses the bathrooms in public.

My two friends and I are continuing to brainstorm similar actions to raise kids in a low-carbon fashion. And I hope that our children can understand that - the rationale behind a crazy father like myself - is that they are not faced with an untamable planet when they grow up.

• Re-use the showered water to flush toilets

Since 2007, Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF) has been participating in the U.N. Climate Change Conference as a non-profit organization, in its bid to connect with international issues. This year, it had a breakthrough from its past role as a reporter by successfully securing an opportunity to co-host a side event with an authoritative international organization during this year's Climate Change Conference (COP 20) held in Lima, Peru, where colleagues from the foundation presented to nearly

200 international officials and scholars the case of how Delta rebuilt a diamond-grade green building campus for Minquan Elementary School in Namasia District of Kaohsiung City.

Since its inauguration in 2012, the elementary school has successfully assisted with sheltering more than a thousand people by utilizing its design for sheltering as well as its back-up for renewable energy that also assisted their efforts in design and management for energy conservation. In 2015, the school will also become the first "net-zero energy" campus. In addition to news coverage by domestic and international media after the conference, this case also received attention from environment officials from the Netherlands and Tuvalu that recognized Delta's efforts in utilizing its role as an enterprise to successfully create an example of adjusting to the impact of climate change.

During this conference, Angela Yeh, a DEF colleague who holds two masters' degrees in environmental studies from Yale University and the University of Oxford, spoke on behalf of the foundation. Having once worked as a volunteer in Tuvalu and having accompanied its delegation group to attend the U.N. conference before joining DEF, Tali Wu utilized her relations with people involved in international affairs to help make this international partnership possible. In charge of projects in the foundation that are related to climate change, Michael Hsieh has been attending the climate conference on special assignment for 4 years in a row. In addition to publishing a series of dedicated articles this year, the colleague managed to get ahead of domestic media and produce an analysis on the final negotiation document from the conference.

The event was broadcast live in full on the internet by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), which attracted more than a thousand people to click and watch. Please visit DEF website to know more details.

generator running on renewable energy< Text by Pamela Huang/ Delta Electronics Foundation >

On Christmas day 2014, a leafless Christmas tree was lit at Minquan Elementary School in Namasia District of Kaohsiung City. Made of disposed pallet and electronic parts gathered by Delta's Tainan plant, lighting for this Christmas tree was supplied for the whole night utilizing a solar power vehicle assembled by DEF volunteers, which realized the extreme creativity based on super green ideas of recycling, reusing and powering with renewable energy.

Since 2014, the foundation has been partnering with Tainan Community University to develop mobile solar power vehicle and portable solar briefcases, so that students and faculties from schools across Taiwan running on a special source of energy will be able to adjust the angle of sunlight reception on solar panels according to climate and geographical locations. The foundation is encouraging people to assemble movable solar modules with batteries integrated to charge appliances and 3C products, as a way to easily and instantly realize green living. For example, in Delta's Ring of Celestial Bliss displayed during the 2013 Taiwan Lantern Festival, the projection station made of disposed iron underwent revamping by way of craftwork from Spanish architect Jose Milara. Equipped with two solar power vehicles, the station was opened to the public in June 2014 for lodging experience. Visitors can try out home living with a utility that comes entirely from green energy. In the future, the foundation will hold subsequent classes on DIY energy equipment. Everybody interested in DIY is welcome to join.
