All delegates must complete registration by 8.15am on day one to participate in the conference. Please note chat rooms choices are to be provided at registration. Conference starts at 8:30am on Wednesday 29th April.

If you are arriving early on the 28th you can take in the stunning sights of Sydney which are only a short bus or cab ride away.

At the hotel

The hotel o�ers a 24hr gym, heated outdoor swimming pool and tennis court.

The ocean is right on your doorstep should you fancy a sunrise swim so don’t forget your swimmers.

Bondi to Coogee walk

The famous Bondi to Coogee walk features six beaches and a number of coves and bays.

You might not have time to do the whole walk but early risers could manage a small section. It takes roughly 45 minutes to walk from Cooggee to Clovelly (the next beach along). Don’t forget you need to get back again!

The whole walk takes around 3 hours there and back.

Identifying my Leadership ShiftRosie Connor, Head of Education Services ‘Coach in a box’

SESSION 1

A practical session which will give participants an experience of a diagnostic tool to help them assess the leader-ship shift they need to make in order to more e�ectively lead programs in their schools. The tool is based on leading edge research on key shifts that leaders need to make at various points in their leadership careers. Twelve shifts have been identi�ed, across the range of leadership domains, from personal resilience and in�uencing others, to inspirational leadership and breakthrough thinking. Coach in a Box has coached over 20,000 business and education leaders worldwide, supporting them to successfully achieve important leadership shifts at critical times in their careers.

Flexible learning, Research & Beacon case studiesDr Vicky Plows, Victoria University

SESSION 2

Vicky will share results from a major project about �exible learning programs around Australia. The project ‘Putting the Jigsaw Together’ mapped over 900 programs nation-wide, that enable marginalized young people to complete Year 9/10/11 and/or 12 level education in a more engaging and supportive program. Case studies, including a Beacon Foundation school, were used to demonstrate what outcomes programs value and achieve; and what actions, principles and conditions help them to achieve those outcomes. This chat room will provide an overview of the project’s core �ndings with a particular focus on data from the Beacon Foundation school case study to show the actions that underpin valued outcomes for students, schools and communities.

The project was led by Associate Professor Kitty te Riele with researchers Dr Vicky Plows and Dr Dorothy Bottrell from Victoria University. The project was funded by the Ian Potter Foundation and supported by the Dusseldorp Forum.

Holcim has been strongly committed to the work of the Beacon Foundation for over a decade, including working with the Foundation to develop and deliver industry focused curriculum with Beacon schools as part of the relationship.

Previously the partnership has focused on delivering as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative and was built to address the initial issues faced by the business; including developing an understanding of the industry by the communities that they work within. However in response to the company’s need to bring more young people into the industry and the rising youth jobless rate across Australia, the partnership has evolved into a work force development initiative o�ering real opportunities under the Beacon Foundation Real Futures Generation project.Peter will deliver his perspective on the history and outcomes of engagement as well as the future of Holcim’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Work Force Development initiatives, and show how these initiates can deliver outcomes to bene�t the whole community.

In this session Danielle will be speaking about growth industries over the next 5 years, where will the jobs be for our students leaving school? Dr Suzy Green D. Psyc.(Clin.) Founder of The Positivity Institute

Dr Suzy Green is a Clinical and Coaching Psychologist (MAPS) based in Sydney and the Founder of The Positivity Institute, an organisation dedicated to the research and application of Positive Psychology for life, school and work.

Suzy is a leader in the complementary �elds of Coaching Psychology and Positive Psychology having conducted a world-�rst study on evidence-based coaching as an Applied Positive Psychology. Suzy is also an identi�ed leader in the emerging �eld of Positive Education having been engaged to co-create and implement the world’s 2nd large-scale Positive Education Program at Knox Grammar School, the �rst being at Geelong Grammar School under the leadership of Professor Martin Seligman. Suzy also provided expert consultation to Loreto Kirribilli on another large-scale Positive Education Program aligned to their school ethos based on Ignatian Spirituality.

Suzy has a strong academic background having published in the Journal of Positive Psychology and having lectured on “Applied Positive Psychology” as a Senior Adjunct Lecturer in the Coaching Psychology Unit, University of Sydney for ten years. She is also an Honorary Vice President of the International Society for Coaching Psychology and holds Honorary Academic positions at the University of Wollongong, University of Melbourne, the Institute for Positive Psychology & Education, Australian Catholic University, the School of Business, University of Western Sydney, the Institute for Well-Being, Cambridge University. Suzy is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Black Dog Institute, a Board Member of The Reach Foundation and is the “Stress-less Expert” for Australian Women’s Health Magazine.

Alison Watkins Group Managing Director, Coca-Cola Amatil

Alison joined Coca-Cola Amatil as Group Managing Director in March 2014. Alison is a non-executive director of The Centre of Independent Studies. Alison’s previous roles include Chief Executive O�cer of agribusiness GrainCorp Limited and of Berri Limited, the market leader in Australian juice, and Managing Director of Regional Banking at ANZ. Ted Noon Principal Ashcroft High School

Ted Noon is principal of Ashcroft High School, which is located in the south-west suburbs of Sydney. Ted is a Fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL NSW), and is a PhD research candidate at the University of Newcastle, currently collecting data in four high schools as part of a longitudinal study.

The essence of his research is the notion of the whole-child, in particular the need to ensure that in our endeavour to achieve a ‘bottom-line’ in outcomes that we haven’t negated the critical elements that support human development – the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development of young people.

Ted is currently working on a new social enterprise to help address the issue of local youth unemployment.

Dr Vicky Plows VU Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr Vicky Plows is a VU Postdoctoral Research Fellow based in The Victoria Institute, College of Education, Victoria University. In this role Vicky has a particular focus on professional learning for social inclusion in education, and is currently conducting research with educators in secondary schools and �exible learning programs.

Vicky has an interdisciplinary background, and her work is located at the intersection of sociology, human geography, education, and childhood and youth studies. Her research seeks to address the social inclusion, education and well-being of young people experiencing disadvantage or marginalisation.

Before joining VU, Vicky led the Childhood and Youth Studies undergraduate degree program at Manchester Metropolitan University and worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Edinburgh. She has lectured in social and educational research, social policy, professional ethics, childhood and youth, working with diverse young people, and learning and employability. Vicky currently sits on the VU Human Research Ethics Committee (Low Risk).

Bill Lawson. AM. Founder of Beacon

Bill Lawson is a recently retired professional Engineer who founded the Beacon Foundation in 1988. Bill remains chairman of the Foundation in which capacity he works closely with the CEO and other Directors on the strategic direction of Beacon. Bill was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for services to Engineering and the young people of Australia.

Since 2000, Bill became increasingly involved in Indigenous issues throughout Australia in his professional capacity and has undertaken many projects in the Indigenous space involving both his then employer, SKM, and Beacon. In 2010, Bill was appointed by PM Gillard to her Expert Panel for the Recognition of Indigenous Australians. Since completion of that task in January 2012, Bill has become increasingly involved with the Recognise movement, particularly in Tasmania, in preparing Australia for the upcoming constitutional referendum on the matter.

Sean Barrett is Head of the Origin Foundation, a philanthropic foundation which supports innovation in education to improve the economic and social prospects of young people.

Sean is a campaigner and administrator with experience in the Public, Private and NGO sectors.Prior to his current role, he spent a decade working at senior levels in NGOs in Europe and Australia on human rights, and environment issues. He successfully completed the inaugural Humanitarian Leadership program at Harvard Business School in 2003, and in 2008 was an invited participant at the Commonwealth Government’s 2020 Summit.
