Cold Sassy Tree by Carlisle Floyd April 4, 5, 7, 6 (m) A widower enters into an arranged marriage that turns out to be more than anyone bargained for. A warm, wise, and nostalgic look at small town Southern life in 1900, Cold Sassy Tree returns home to Houston. Former UH faculty member Carlisle Floyd, the dean of American opera composers, penned this valentine to a vanished world that is the “don’t miss” climax of the season. Info: www.music.uh.edu/pianofestival 16th MOORES JAZZ FESTIVAL February 28–March 1 The annual Moores School Jazz Festival presents the giants of the jazz world in collaboration with MSM Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Noe Marmolejo. Artists have included the Count Basie Orchestra, Michael Brecker, Terence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, Bill Evans, David Liebman, Lew Soloff, among others. The festival also features jazz ensembles of all ages who come from Texas schools to perform and receive adjudication from a panel of experts. VACEK JAZZ ARTIST RESIDENCY April 16 Funded by a generous gift from UH alumnus Jeff Vacek, the residency program brings leading performers and educators to the Moores School of Music for an intensive period of training and performance. CANDIDE By Leonard Bernstein April 26 A concert version of Berstein’s crazy, zany opera based on Voltaire’s farce will be performed by a huge array of singers and players in a fitting celebratory closing concert for the school year. The massed performers of Moores School include UH Choruses, the Symphony Orchestra, and a multitude of the school’s vocal stars.
