Reliefcoming
Here are some interesting acts:• There are 3 million licensed amateur radio operators
worldwide, which is less than 0.04% of the globalpopulation. In sharp contrast, 6 billion people (88%) haveaccess to a mobile (cellular) phones and soon, there willbe more cell phones in operations than there will be people
on earth to use them. Compared to these gures, amateurradio operators are indeed a very small, almost insignicantminority, and telecommunications companies raking inbillions in prots every year want to keep it that way.
• Worldwide, out of those 3 millions licensed amateur radiooperators, Japan sits at the top of the list with almost 1.3million operators, followed closely by the United-States,
Canada being in 7th place on the chart.
• The average age of Amateur radio operators is 67 years
old and that number keeps increasing every year. About
15% of operators are women and 85% are men. In somecountries, you won’t nd an amateur radio operatoryounger than 80 years old. People who obtained theiroperator license in the 1960s and 1970s constitute the
majority of operators today and would explain the matureage of operators. No wonder this hobby was very popularin the 60-70s, as it was the Internet of its era!
• Amateur radio is the only failsafe communication systemleft in the world.

Every year on December 1, people around theworld recognize World AIDS Day. Tis annual event isan opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate thosewho have passed on, celebrate victories such as increasedaccess to treatment and prevention services, and stampout the stigma wrongly associated with HIV. Tis year, World AIDS Day is being celebratedwith events throughout Montana, the nation, and theglobe. Tis year’s theme is “Getting to zero: zero newHIV inections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS relateddeaths”.
While the World AIDS Day theme is global in nature,we must also address it on the local level. Leadership in thefight against AIDS starts in amilies, schools, workplaces, places o worship, health care settings, and elective offices.ogether our collective voices can help. All o us can takethe lead.
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. In Montana, 586people are living with HIV or AIDS, and 16-31 new casesare diagnosed each year. HIV may not grab the he adlinesanymore like it did at the height o the epidemic in the1980s, but it does threaten lives and loved ones right herein Montana. Tis devastating disease has taken the liveso more than 400 Montanans since 1985, and continuesto debilitate the lives o those living with HIV and theiramilies.
What steps can you take? First, learn your HIVstatus. An estimated 1.2 million Americans are livingwith HIV, but one out o five doesn’t know it. A newwebsite, www.GetCheckedMt.com , lists testing locationsaround the state so it is easy to find the nearest place to gettested or HIV and other sexually transmitted inections.Approximately 56,000 Americans are inected with HIVeach year and hal o them are te enagers. Be sure to talk to your doctor about ways to reduceyour risk o contracting HIV, like practicing saer sex.Help to educate members o your community about howthe disease is transmitted and how it can be prevented.
esting is easy and can be done by either a mouthswab or a finger stick. Tis test takes only 20 minutesor results. When a positive test is ound, this is called apositive preliminary test. Blood work would then be sentto the state lab or confirmation results.
I you would like to make an appointment or testingor i you have a question regarding ees please ask tospeak to a nurse. Te phone number or Valley CountyHealth Department is 228-6261. One reason people donot seek out HIV testing is a concern over confidentiality.Te health department wants you to know when clientscall in they can remain anonymous.
