Pastor’s Column – A Message from Fr. Eric Underwood The Twelve Days of Christmas: The Catholic

Church celebrates the season of Christmas over a

span of twelve days. These twelve days begin on

December 25th and end on January 5th

(traditionally, the day before the Epiphany).

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a popular Christmas song.

In the sixteenth century, the religious wars in England made it

dangerous to be a Christian. The well-known song was used to

teach children about the Catholic Church. Although the lyrics

may sound like nonsense, the song actually contains hidden

    references:

A Partridge in a Pear Tree Jesus

Two Turtle Doves The Old and New Testaments

Three French Hens The Three Theological Virtues:

    Faith, Hope, and Love

Four Calling Birds The Four Gospels:

    Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Five Golden Rings The First Five Books of the Old

Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

Six Geese A-Laying The Six Days of Creation

Seven Swans A-Swimming The Seven Gifts of the Holy

    Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude,

Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord

Eight Maids A-Milking The Eight Beatitudes

Nine Ladies Dancing The Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit:

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness,

    Gentleness, and Self-Control

Ten Lords A-Leaping The Ten Commandments:

Eleven Pipers Piping The Eleven Faithful Apostles:

Peter, Andrew, James the Greater, John, Philip,

Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the Less,

    Simon, and Jude

Twelve Drummers Drumming Twelve points of doctrine in

    the Apostles’ Creed

On behalf of your Muncie Catholic priests and staff, may God

bless you this Christmas and in the New Year!

PARISH MINISTRIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Adult Faith Formation Column

(Sue Wilhelm) For Sunday, December 27

As we celebrate Holy Family Sunday, may you think of

your own family, pray for each one, be reconciled where

rifts have occurred, and deepen your love for and your joy

in the gift of one another. Christ was the center of the

Holy Family. May Christ be the center of our own

families as well. How might that be for you?

    For Sunday, January 3

Dear Friends, Your gatherings may have been a little

different this year. You may be finding yourself

wondering what the coming year will bring or struggling

with how you are invited to live deeply your faith, or your

relationship with Jesus and your community in the context

of Covid and winter and transition. So please, may I

remind you, that praise and glory, song and joy are not

foreign during times of darkness and difficulty. The

deeper truth is that God is dwelling among us and within

us. That alone gives us reason to live in praise and joyful

love. Compassion in the midst of suffering and hopeful

joy are intertwined in the love God manifests to us. May

our hearts hear the invitation and bask in this Epiphany!
