As we close out 2018 and begin to celebrate the holidays, it’s important to remember to thank those who made possible much of the success the Hillsboro Chamber has enjoyed this year.

Our Leading Investors provide a level of investment which allows the Hillsboro Chamber to affect many initiatives that have had unique and transformative impact for our businesses as well as our community.

Many of the accomplishments we achieved this year would not have been possible without the ability to provide focused attention on important issues as they arose. This ability to pivot our resources with relative ease is an important attribute of this organization and is only achieved by having the financial stability provided by our Leading Investors.

• We were able to leverage our relationships with TriMet, Ride Connection and the City of Hillsboro to quickly expand the North Hillsboro Link Shuttle service when employers had a need for weekend service and extended hours. Convening the right people at the right time to deliver the desired outcome is only accomplished by developing long-term collaborative interactions.

Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Mission: To promote business prosperity and a healthy, diverse community by providing information, services and advocacy for our members.

Leading Investors’ Amplified Investment Provides Enhanced Opportunities

• We worked with the Port of Portland, City of Hillsboro and UPS to bring daily air cargo from the Hillsboro Airport to PDX. This enhanced service will provide companies with an opportunity to extend their daily pick-up time allowing for delivery of vital, high value packages to reach their destinations without delay.

• We will bring together representatives of Multnomah & Washington Counties as well as the City of Hillsboro on December 11th to outline their plans for the upcoming Cornelius Pass Road construction project scheduled for June 2019.

• We served in a leadership role on the HB 2017 Transit Advisory Committee ensuring there was a business community voice at the table when important investments in transit were decided.

This is just a sample of the work the Hillsboro Chamber undertakes to support our business community. We wouldn’t be able to participate at this level of regional engagement and participation without the support of our Leading Investors. Their financial investment allows the Hillsboro Chamber to have a leadership role on these issues. We greatly appreciate all of our members’ support of the Hillsboro Chamber. Your participation in our organization is an acknowledgment of our work and for that we are extremely grateful.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season!

As you may remember, in October the Hillsboro City Council joined with the Hillsboro Chamber to bring together a 16-member task force that would have six meetings discussing ideas for curbing the impact of homelessness on the business community. We have just held our second to the last meeting and it’s been an eye-opening experience so far.

While specific outcomes, ideas and policy recommendations will come at a later date, I thought it would be appropriate to provide an update on the work of this group. Keeping in mind that the mission of this group was purposefully narrow and specifically not centered on housing, but on providing the business community tools they could use when interfacing with our homeless community. As a reminder of our purpose, I’ve included it below.

Purpose:The City of Hillsboro and Hillsboro

Chamber Joint Homelessness Task Force will learn about the issue of homelessness in the community and develop recommendations and best practices for the City with an emphasis on how the business community can be involved.

The Leading Investors are a special group of members committed to support the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce through sponsorships at various financial levels and through advertising.

If your company would like to become a member of this elite circle, contact Deanna Palm at 503.726.2146 or [email protected].

The goals of the members of the task force were to become better educated about issues related to homelessness, identify policies that are already in place, understand where limitations exist related to policy development and research best practices across the U.S. that might provide some opportunities for us to incorporate or at least explore further.

This has been a great experience and working with the Mayor and seeing his passion for this issue has been personally rewarding. We have truly dedicated resource providers throughout our community who have shared their work with us and have been thoughtful in their understanding of the various impacts on business and our community.

It’s gratifying to go into this holiday season with a greater sense of empathy for those who are in need whether that need is shelter, food, mental health support or all of the above. I look forward to providing a summary of our work when our task force concludes and we present our findings and suggestions to the City Council.

The old saying “it takes a village” is especially true during the holiday season. Hillsboro is not much different from other cities across the state when it comes to the issue of people needing a helping hand to get by. As we all take a deep breath and get ready to jump into the frenzy that is often the holiday season, the Hillsboro Chamber would like to remind you of some of the ways you can reach out and strengthen our community by buying a little extra and giving it to the charity of your choice. There are giving trees and adopt-a-family opportunities all over Hillsboro that can make giving quick and easy. In addition, many of Hillsboro’s agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations are working overtime to provide for people who struggle during the holidays. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

The KGW Great Toy Drive has drop off bins at Wells Fargo and Toyota locations across the Hillsboro area. Visit KGW.com/toy to find one near you.

Insomnia Coffee holds an Annual Sock Drive for our local cold weather shelter (Shelter

at Orenco Station). This year you can stop by on the weekend of

December 15th and 16th and simply tell the barista to add $5 for a "Sack

O' Socks" to your order. Absolutely 100% of the funds go to socks. Last year they raised enough money to

purchase and donate 183 pairs of socks! What

an easy way to be generous in this season of giving and we

are told the number one request from homeless people are socks.

Salvation Army has numerous volunteer opportunities including ringing at a Kettle Bell location, driving to pick up and deliver food, and preparing sack lunches. Find a list of ways to get involved at https://volunteer.usawest.org/OpportunityListPage.aspx.

Don’t forget about our furry friends this holiday season – Frontier Veterinary

Hospital hosts their yearly "Pet Pictures

with Santa" as a benefit for Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter in

Hillsboro. 100% of the proceeds raised from the event go directly to the shelter

to help pets in our local community! Since the event began in 2010, they have raised over $6000 for the pets at Bonnie Hays. Join them on

Saturday, December 8th for the 9th Annual Pet Pictures with Santa.

Oregon Humane Society also has events throughout December where your donations are graciously accepted! A Doggie Holiday Photoshoot and a Meet & Greet event both take place in the Hillsboro area – find out details at https://www.oregonhumane.org/get-involved/events/. The Oregon Food Bank accepts donations to help those in need this season. You can visit https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/give/giving-season/ for ways to donate or to find ways to volunteer as they prepare and deliver food boxes to those who need them all over the community.

Columbia Bank is continuing its annual Warm Hearts Winter Drive. They accepts cash donations in addition to

Willamette West Habitat for Humanity, serving the greater Washington Co. area, is always welcoming new volunteers to join our team! Volunteer one time or make it a regular event. Volunteer on your own or bring a group. We welcome all volunteers! No experience is necessary, and we provide all the training, tools, and safety equipment. We build on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8:00am-4:00pm. Currently we are building in Beaverton at our Denney Gardens site. When completed, this community of safe, decent, and affordable homes, will be home to 16 families.

An individual, family, or a few friends can sign up to volunteer by visiting our website at http://www.habitatwest.org/volunteer-schedule. Groups of 5 or more can be scheduled by contacting our volunteer coordinator, Jacleen Simons at [email protected] or (503) 844-7606 x 113.

We also have additional volunteer opportunities to explore. If you are interested in learning more, or have questions, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Jacleen Simons at [email protected] or (503) 844-7606 x 113.

Come join us as we work hard, give back, and have fun! Together we can build homes, communities, and hope!

new winter apparel. Donations can be submitted online at WarmHeartsWinterDrive.com, and both cash and new warm winter attire can be donated at every Columbia Bank branch across the Northwest.

Hillsboro Fire Random Acts has multiple fundraising and volunteer opportunities available during the holiday season including a bake sale, toy barrels placed at each of the Hillsboro fire stations and the Hillsboro Civic Center lobby, or you can donate cash to be used toward purchasing new toys. If you stop by one of the toy barrel locations, you can donate any new toy in its original packaging for any age. The toys are collected and organized for specific families. There tends to be a lack of items for infants and high schoolers. The older kids like things that are more practical and/or compliment their electronics. Gift cards work great for teens as well. Donations will be collected on Dec. 6. HFRA is also raising money for the purchase of additional toys for families who are in need this year.

Every year Centro Cultural and local partners rally together to create holiday baskets for families in our community that experience hardships throughout the winter months. Their baskets include a combination of staple food items and toys for children in need. They open up our application process for families in early November, and receive information necessary to craft unique baskets based on a family's request. Volunteering opportunities for set up are available December 11-15th, 2018. Visit http://www.centrocultural.org/christmas-baskets.html or contact Rose Gallegos at 503-536-2695 or at [email protected] for more info and to sign up!

Just as there is no lack of friends and neighbors who need a bit of extra help during the holidays, there is also no lack of ways to reach out and make a difference by donating and or volunteering. We wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season of giving and can't wait to see the impact we all will make in the community!

Practical Business Management Basics – 4 Session Workshop

As the year comes to an end it’s time to look back into 2018 and see what we’ve accomplished within the Latinx business community. The chamber set out to create value in what it provides to the Latinx business community. We have created great partnerships with Adelante Mujeres’ Empresas Program, Centro Cultural/Prosperidad and M&M Marketplace. This great partnership created the Prospering Communities program, which provides opportunities to Latinx business owners. The Washington County Fair, Hillsboro Hops, Spectra Food, Bag & Baggage, and Centro have allowed us to place Latinx business owners in their respective spaces to highlight the diversity of our Hillsboro business community. We have provided Latinx business owners with Lewis & Clark Law School’s Small Business Legal Clinic workshop and have other workshops planned with Washington County Dept. of Health and Human Services Public Health Division, Environmental Health, Oregon Department of Consumer & Business Services Workers Compensation Division, and SBA for 2019. The business outreach has been a huge success, which has contributed to the growth of our Conéctate bilingual mixer. In November Conéctate had nearly 70 people in attendance. The 1:1 meetings with local business owners are an invaluable interaction for the chamber. Our Latinx Business Outreach Manager will continue to do local business outreach within the Latinx business community and with chamber members who want to tap into the Latinx business community. The chamber is committed to making meaningful connections with the community and will continue to do so as we welcome 2019!

Kent Lewis started pdxMindShare 16 years ago. His intentions were to give career-focused individuals a way to network with professionals. He built in the career-focused workshops as a way for attendees to take away information that would be helpful in job searches, promotions, career advancement

or changes. Topics can include networking, personal branding, interviewing, LinkedIn strategies, resume tips and more. pdxMindShare, held on the 3rd Wednesday each month in Portland, attracts dozens of professionals who are constantly learning new ways to reach their career goals at our workshops with the opportunity to expand their Portland connections at the networking event that follows.

Social Media can have a huge impact not only on your business but your brand.

He will provide real-world case studies, best practices and additional resources. Lastly, Lewis will host a clinic; reviewing attendee social media presences' and provide real-time feedback to make social media work more effectively for your business.

Please Note: This Social Media workshop is specifically designed for businesses that are currently using social media, but need to increase the effectiveness on using the various platforms to increase business and profitability.

After an amazing morning at the Washington County Museum hearing about the people and events that shaped Hillsboro, the Leadership Hillsboro class made their way to Jackson Bottom Wetlands where they were given a surprise bird-watching lesson at this amazing wetlands preserve right within the city limits of Hillsboro. A panel shared information with the group about the efforts that are being made in Hillsboro to preserve our natural resources and ensure they will be sustainable for the long-term. Always a favorite stop for Environment, History and Agriculture Day is a visit to Eshraghi Nursery where the class witnesses the amazing process of producing enough holiday wreaths and garlands to ship all over the U.S. as well as how the nursery business has become one of the top industries in Hillsboro.

The School to Career Program continues to offer great Experiential Learning Opportunities to Washington County high school seniors.

Mr. David Edwards, film and comic professional volunteered his time and passion for independent Comics to create a 15+ hour classroom experience for ten students from 6 different schools. We’ve interviewed him about his experience.

Did you get what you hoped from the experience?

The students rewarded me with some wonderful story ideas and concept art. Not one proposed to create a standard superhero title. Their ideas were personal and idiosyncratic. Even those stories that fell into well-established genres like science-fiction or fantasy featured a trenchant topical issue or two. For instance, one student pitched a comic about a rivalry between humans and witches that served as an allegory for race relations. And another presented an idea for a comic about a lion born male but without a mane dealing with issues of sexual identity. I was proud of the students' originality and their interest in dramatizing social and cultural issues of personal interest.

Are you willing to volunteer to teach another Comic or film class?

Absolutely, it’s invigorating to be around young artists. They're open to new ideas and eager to learn how to bring their visions to life.

Can you tell us about your upcoming venture with Comics in your professional life?

So far, I've published one double-sized comic as part of my Nightscape series of supernatural thrillers and am currently working with artist-collaborators on two others. In addition, I'm planning a comic book convention called Portland Indie Con for June 29th and 30th at the Doubletree by Hilton in Portland (across from the Lloyd Center mall). As the name implies, Portland Indie Con will focus on independent and small press comics. We'll have an exhibit hall with up to 90 tables where attendees can meet comic book creators and buy their wares, plus a wide array of programming, including workshops on various aspects of making comics. The idea is to give budding creators a chance to learn from local experts and to give fans an opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes. A weekend pass will cost just $10. We'll be promoting the show, in part, by sponsoring an event or two during the City of Portland's Comic Book Month this April. We're just starting to seek corporate sponsorship so if anyone's interested, feel free to contact me at [email protected].
