After serving the Hillsboro community for nearly a century, Vogt’s Hometown Market has been sold to Heartland

Foods Corporation. Todd Vogt, representing the 4th generation of the Vogt family grocery business, will continue on as general manager of the Heartland Foods Hillsboro location. Originally Vogt’s was located in the downtown business district. In 1998 a lot was purchased in the Hillsboro Heights Addition adjacent to Hwy 56 on which they built a new 16,000 sq. ft. facility. Vogt’s Hometown Market became an anchor business in Hillsboro Heights which has now grown to approximately 14 business establishments. According to Paul Barns, business partner of Heartland Foods, they now have seven grocery stores located throughout Kansas and one store in Nebraska. Barns lives in Herington, KS and will oversee the Hillsboro facility. “We plan to have our store open for business in early spring and will provide Hillsboro and Marion County with the high quality of service they have learned to appreciate and have received in the past.”

It was 1990 when Lydia Hein of rural Hillsboro made one of her family’s favorite mustard recipes to sell at the Annual Arts and

Crafts Fair. She was so surprised to see how quickly her mustard sold out. Soon after, orders came streaming in from across the country. After 20 some years of producing mustard at their home, Lydia (Grannie) and her husband Emice sold the business to their son and daughter in law. Eugene and Rita have decided to move the business to 301 North Cedar in Hillsboro where they are constructing a new facility in which to manufacture Grannie’s Mustard products. They presently produce eight different mustard recipes which are distributed and sold through a number of grocery outlets in Kansas. You can also find Grannie’s Mustard being sold at the Kansas State Fair, Kansas Sampler Festival, Mid-West Hunt Fest, Kansas Sport Boat and Travel Show and the Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair. The Hillsboro Development Corporation is pleased to nominate local businesses to be recognized by the Kansas Department of Commerce for outstanding service to Hillsboro and surrounding communities. Recognition

awards were presented by KDOC Regional Business Development Director, Renee Lippincott. Hillsboro has an active and thriving business sector which provides a strong economic climate for the entire community.

Country Haven Inn

Hillsboro’s 24 bed Country Haven Inn, was open for business on May 1, 2000. Developer, Phil Griffin stated, “We researched a lot of places in

Kansas and the Hillsboro area was a great place for us because of Tabor College and the progressive business community.” Country Haven has been a vital part of the economic growth of Hillsboro. They were one of the first businesses to locate in the Hillsboro Heights business district along Hwy 56. Their presence has been a key factor in attracting other businesses to the area. Shana Stepanek, local manager, received the award from Renee Lippincott.

Hillsboro True Value Hardware

True Value Hardware is an important business in Hillsboro’s downtown business district. Co-owners, Ken and Tom Koslowsky have been

serving the Hillsboro community for more than 35 years. They offer a wide selection of hardware and paints as well as a complete line of lawn and garden equipment. They also provide small engine repair, parcel shipping and self storage units. The True Value Hardware sales staff has a reputation for great customer service. as Jost Fabricating, their goal is to serve the customer’s specific needs including custom alterations. They are the area’s leading dealer for Hillsboro Industries, Circle D, Thunderstruck, DewEze, B&W Hitches and more! In July of 2013 Hillsboro 7th and 8th graders experienced things that city workers do on a daily basis in the first annual Hillsboro Youth Adventure. Students spent an entire day visiting six different departments of the city.

Each department planned interesting hands on activities. Students were able to operate a high loader and back hoe, ride in a bucket truck and throw water balloons at targets from 40 ft. up, spray water from the fire truck and participate in a mock traffic stop with police car and sirens.

Lunch included pizza with the Mayor. The students had a lot of questions as to how the city operates and gave their suggestions for city improvements.

Organizers, Ashlee Gann director of FACT, Larry Paine City Administrator and Clint Seibel economic development director envisioned the following outcomes from the event: • Open the eyes of community youth to future job opportunities • Develop a better understanding of the services offered by the city • Encourage students to consider future community and civic involvement • Instill in the participants the possibility of living in Hillsboro with a successful lifestyle

Student evaluations showed that some of the outcomes were achieved with comments like, “I liked the police and fire fighting stations best. I like working with animals, so I think it would be a cool job to work with a (K-9) dog.” For one student eating lunch with the mayor was a highlight. “I liked that we were able to ask her questions, ask her what she does and that kind of stuff.”

The vision for a fine arts center has been in the making for 30 years and the dream is about to become a reality. A significant amount has already been raised for the new $9 million Center for the Arts. An additional

$2.5 million has recently been invested in other campus enhancements. Tabor College wants to promote its students involved in choir, theater, music, art and band. This facility will enhance the love for the fine arts in this community, plus give Tabor students a world class place to grow. This 50,000 sq. ft. Center for the Arts will provide a venue for cultural experiences for students and the community at large.

Tabor students come from 37 states and eight different countries. The student body has grown significantly in recent years, creating the need for additional classrooms and instructional spaces. Students seek degrees in the

28 majors offered. The Tabor College Wichita campus is home to adult and graduate studies with an enrollment of 150 students.

Tabor College is an important part of the Hillsboro community. With 600 students in residence, plus over 150 faculty and staff, the economic impact is significant. Improvements, such as new parking lots, benefit both

students and the broader community.

An anonymous lead gift sparked interest among Hillsboro civic organizations, as well as businesses and individuals, to provide financial support for the purchase and renovation of the local downtown bowling alley.

The final piece of the funding package was secured through the Hillsboro E-Community loan program which provides low interest loans for business start-ups and expansions.Renovations began in July of 2013 which included a total facelift and handicap accessibility. The overall plan called for the newly remodeled bowling center to have dedicated space for a teen youth center. A TV Lounge equipped with free WiFi and an adjoining game room with a pool table is available to the community.

In exchange for their financial investment, Tabor College received naming rights. Bluejay Lanes is now home to the Tabor College intercollegiate bowling team.

Bluejay Lanes opened for business in September 2013. The Center is open to the public on weekends and available for group events and parties. Adult League bowling and Hillsboro City Recreation Youth Leagues are scheduled during the week.

They were one of the first businesses to locate in the Hillsboro Heights business district along Hwy 56. Their presence has been a key factor in attracting other businesses to the area. Shana Stepanek, local manager, received the award from Renee Lippincott.

Heartland Foods New Owner of Hillsboro

Grocery Store

Plans are being made for major warehouse expansion project at the Hillsboro facility. Phase one will include a

13,500 sq. ft. addition with construction to begin in spring of 2014. Barkman Honey is a major catalyst for economic activity in Hillsboro and Marion County, Kansas.
