PMNH Zoologist Conducts Research on Dung Beetles' Role in Ecological ServicesScarab beetles (Dung beetle) are coprophagus (dung eater) beetles and play a vital role in

nature's sanitation by utilizing cattle's dung as food in their larval and adult stages by

burying them inside the soil. This process not only provides dung manure to the soil, but also increases its fertility. They also help to maintain the atmosphere by utilizing and dispersion of the organic waste

which is very important in ecosystem because of the removal of detritus from the soil surface. It is well-known fact that dung beetles also play an active role in controlling the development

of many fly pests and enteric paras i t es o f ca t t l e and l i v e s t o c k b y r a p i d d i s s e m i n a t i o n o f contaminated matter, thus minimizing the parasitic potential of the dung. These scavengers provide useful ecological services to both livestock and humans. Due to

degradation of the dung by dung beetles larvae feeding in the pasture area, the pasture areas increase, otherwise it would cover the earth surface. Each day larvae may consume 175-530 % of their dry body weight in dung. The economic value of the ecosystem benefits in the United States

was estimated more than 2 billion dollar provided by dung beetles.The beet les expert Mr. Muhammad Abbas, Associate C u r a t o r Z S D , P M N H investigated the dung beetle fauna in northern Pakistan, i n c l u d i n g K h y b e r Pakhtunkhawa province,
