This large drum was donated to the Temple by Lucille Mickelson of St Paul. The drum had been turned into a

coffee table with a glass top and was in Lucille Mickelson’s home. The drum is now in the Potentate’s office and

being used as work table/coffee table. Our thanks and appreciation goes out to Lucille for this very meaningful

donation to Osman Shrine.

I had one goal when I accepted the appointment as Outer Guard ten years ago, to leave Osman better than I found it. As I write my final letter

as Potentate I think I can say WE accomplished that goal. I did not do it alone. We did it together. We did it by working together as a team. From Illustrious Sir Rahn Lund, who appointed me, to the current Outer Guard Jim Gratias, and everyone in between. Your Divan is a very diverse group with many different backgrounds working toward one goal, the goal of growing Osman and making it a place we are all proud of.

The things I value most about my time on the Divan are the incredible people I have met along the way. I have made so many new friends and will cherish the memories forever. Ten years is a long time and very difficult to summarize in one short letter. I would

like to thank all of you for your help, guidance, and friendship over the past ten years. This year, just like others, has had its challenges and rewards. I can say without hesitation that the rewards were far greater than the few challenges we faced. I am so glad to have been part of our growth into the new building and long needed updates. It has been such an honor to work alongside all of the men and women involved in Osman, learning so much more about the different Masonic related organizations and how they work with and complement each other.

There is so much to say about the Temple and the People that I cannot put it all in one issue of the Osman. So, I simply leave you with, Thank You! Thank you for allowing me to serve as the Osman Potentate and thank you for working with me to help this great organization succeed. A special thank you to Russ Christofk and Tom West for doing what they do best (keeping Potentates in line and out of trouble).

With these two men, and the rest of the Divan, Osman will continue to succeed and thrive.

Please welcome in and help the 2015 Potentate as you have helped me.

Yours in faith, Roger H. BergePotentate 2014

DUES DUES DUES Want to end that annual bill from OSMAN?

Osman is excited to continue to offer this program. As technology grows, life is

sometimes made simpler for all of us. As of January 2006 we have offered AUTOPAY as a great way to get rid of that annual dues notice. With a one time signature and authorization from you we will automatically charge your credit card one time a year, every October when we are mailing dues cards. This will be done manually and securely and doesn’t have that risk of sending card numbers over the internet.

We have for some time offered Nobles the ability to pay with plastic, but in a way to make it more convenient for you we are now starting to keep track of when your payment is due and make it with your approved credit card. This is an optional program - it is not required that you do this.

Osman sends in excess of 1,200 dues notices each fall at $0.49 each; then you spend the same to return a payment and we spend it again to mail your card. The new method for those choosing autopay - Osman spends $ 0.49 to mail your dues card and receipt for the credit card transaction, that simple. This program has been very successful in many Temples throughout North America and with your help it will be very successful here.

If you would like to participate in this program, and have not already signed up, please fill out the form below and return it to Doreen at the Osman office

Directors Staff

Kent Swedberg

Greetings Nobles,

Happy Holidays to you all and to your families. We had a good turnout at the Hufli Dinner in November. As always, the food was delicious. The

Director’s Staff filled two tables and a thanks goes to Mike Nehm, who carved the turkey.

To Dave McKinnon, the Director’s Staff would like to give a special thank you for his work repairing our Shrine vehicles this year. It was much appreciated.

At our October dinner meeting, we introduced a new member to the Director’s Staff, Noble Glen Anderson and his wife, Lady Barbara. Welcome aboard Glen and Barbara. Thank you again, Nobles, to all who helped this year with the parades and the Camel

Herder Degree. It’s so much easier when we have help.

Upcoming events include:

1. The Children’s Holiday Party on Sunday, Dec. 7th from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Lost Spur Osman Event Center.

2. On December 8th, is the Director’s Staff Holiday Party at Mancini’s on 7th Street in St. Paul. The menu and price are the same as last year. The newly elected officers for 2015 will be installed. All Director’s Staff members, their ladies, and widows are welcome.

3. The Club and Unit Holiday Party and Parade to Glory are Tuesday, Dec. 9th. The social hour begins at 6:00 PM with a dinner buffet to follow at 7:00 PM.

4. The New Year’s Day Brunch is at the Lost Spur on Thursday, January

1st, 2015. Hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and reservations are required. Osman Nobles are free with your paid 2015 dues card.

5. More info will be coming regarding the St. Paul Winter Carnival Parade.

6. As always, keep in mind the dates of the Osman Shrine Circus, March 26-29, 2015. We will need help setting up and taking down our Novelty Booth.

To all of you “snowbirds”, who will be leaving soon for warmer climates, we wish you safe travels and look forward to seeing you in the spring.

Our next dinner meeting is on Tuesday, January 20th, at 6:00 PM at Guldens. Remember, ladies are always welcome at our meetings.

Keep on rollin’ with the Director’s Staff

Austin Area Shrine Club & Oriental BandNobles and Ladies met

on November 13th at the Holiday Inn of Austin for their monthly meeting. This was a return meeting for us at this site as we had met there many times in the past.

November was the beginning of Bell Ringing for the Nobles, with help from the ladies. We traditionally kick-off the “Red Kettle Campaign” for the Salvation Army making the first donation to their annual drive. We then attempt to take over the town on the first Friday in December. For the past few years this

successful event has resulted in matching funds from Minnesota Masonic Charities for the Salvation Army Area Food Shelf.

Discussion on the Shrine Circus took place, and the importance of involvement at the Circus was stressed. Our support was encouraged.

The nominating committee presented the slate of officers for 2015, and they were elected by a unanimous vote. They are: Brad Stout, President; Max Pecht II, Vice President; William Newell, Secretary; Norm Hecimovich, Treasurer; Neil Hanson, Business Mgr.; and Forrest Miller, Band Director.

Members were reminded of the All-Masonic Christmas Dinner to be held on Sunday, Dec. 7th, at the Hormel Historic Home. And, the annual Shrine Holiday Dinner-Installation of Officers to be held on Thursday, Dec. 11th, at the Austin Country Club beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Get well wishes were extended to Nobles Max Pecht II and Charles Van House who had surgery on November 7th.

The next meeting will be the December 11th dinner at the Austin Country Club.

Mighty MitesGreetings from the Mighty Mites

Parade to Glory

With the busy parade season coming to an end, we look forward to the most important parade of the year. Yes, the Parade to Glory will soon be here allowing us to stand tall and make our annual gift to the many essential components of this great organization. With so many options with which to share our gifts this year, we find ourselves viewing a list of needs that will go a long way toward supporting our chosen philanthropy. Each year, the Clubs and Units of Osman answer the needs of Osman and Shriners International by sharing their gifts with the kids in mind.

Mighty Mites Elections

The Mighty Mites recently concluded their annual election of officers who will serve on our Board of Directors next year.

Those nominated and elected to serve the Mites and Osman are the following:

• President Burt Rovner

• Vice President Gary Hoven

• Secretary/Treasurer Ron Larson

• Member at Large Art Lemke

• Member at Large Wally Larsen

We, the Mighty Mites, want to thank both last year’s officers, and next year’s officers for their commitment to Osman and the Mighty Mites.

FAQs about the Mighty Mites (maybe you have wondered as well)

What are Mighty Mites?

Mighty Mites are a brotherhood of men committed to family, engaged in ongoing personal growth, and dedicated to providing care for children and families in need. Our backgrounds and interests

are diverse, but we are bound together by our shared values and a desire to have fun, do good deeds and build relationships that can last a lifetime.

Do the Mighty Mites get together socially?

The Mighty Mites plan a social event each month throughout the year. Our events are planned from a simple Boyz night out to fun family events as well. You can expect pool gatherings, BBQ’s, home parties, card nights and maybe an evening with a fine cigar.

How do I become a Mighty Mite?

Everything you need to know can be found on our web site at osmanshrinemightymites. org.

Chanters

Thanksgiving has come and gone. We hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. It’s nice to look forward to the Christmas season with dazzling lights and trim all over town.

Chanters were at Hufli, and had just a fine evening…but my personal record remains intact – no door prize. Our fellow Chanter and good friend Bob Meyer missed the Hufli due to knee replacement surgery. He’s doing well

with exercises at home now.

We’re going to have a Christmas luncheon instead of dinner this year to help our members who are not fond of night driving. It will be at Gulden’s on December 2nd. It should be a lot of fun.

We have important functions coming up --- the Children’s Holiday Party on December 7th and the Club & Unit

Party on December 9th. Chanters plan to be there, as well as at the Stated Meeting on December 2nd.

May joy and peace surround you,

Contentment latch your door,

And happiness be with you

And bless you evermore.

Hufli had a great turnout and a good time was had by all! Also, we had a good turnout at the Big Tent event

held on November 15th, with the best Ceremonial team in all of Shrinedom!

December is shaping up to be a very busy month as there are MANY events scheduled. Some of the highlights are as follows:

Stated Meeting Tuesday, December 2nd

Kids Holiday Party Sunday, December 7th

Club & Unit - Parade to Glory Tuesday, December 9th (6:00 PM)

Many, many club and unit Holiday Parties

New Year’s Brunch Thursday, January 1st

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with loved ones and that the rapidly approaching Christmas/Hanukkah/New Year’s Holidays allow you time to rest, spend more time with family and friends, and reflect on why it is we do what we do as a part of this great organization. Keep those petitions handy for both your Blue Lodge as well as the Shrine as membership grows one petition at a time.

We have completed another busy summer parade season from Western Wisconsin, the Iowa border, Sioux Falls, SD, Sleepy Eye, Minneapolis. & all points in between. We did 22 parades, which included a very exciting show at the Imperial season on Hennepin Ave. in support of our Illustrious Sir Roger Berge & his Divan & Aides. We also did 3 parades on the 4th of July!

At the Midwest at El Riad in Sioux Falls, SD the Cycle Patrol won 3 First Place Trophies in the 3 Motor Corps events we participated in. We were led by our Captain, Noble Rick Dorn.

We had a great showing at the Hufli

with 13 Cycle Patrol members in attendance.

On Nov. 5th we had our 53rd annual (1963) Compact Dinner with the Rochester Business Community (Clarion Inn) with over 75 local business owners and thanked them for their support, and likewise they thanked us for being great ambassador’s that uphold the integrity of our Great city of Rochester and in the S.E. MN communities which we paraded. And no member went down or got injured, all is good.

On Friday, Nov. 21st we have our Annual meeting & election of officers

(short meeting) then we will have our annual holiday party. We will have them combined this year at the Clarion Inn at 6:00 PM.

If you, or anyone you know wants to have a lot of fun & join the Rochester Osman Shrine Cycle Patrol (we will teach you how to ride and parade) have them get in touch with me 507-254-3129.

October 20, 2014 Osman Shrine Provost Unit Meeting Notes Summary

The October 20, 2014 Osman Shrine

Provost Unit meeting was held at the Osman Shrine Center with eight Nobles in attendance. Captain Erik Seavey called the meeting to order. Noble Tom West delivered the Invocation and Noble Richard Johnson led the Provost in the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The Secretary’s report was presented and approved. It was noted the Noble Al Christofk will be working in D’lberville, Mississippi until December 2015; he will handle his Provost Treasurer duties from that location. Following the Treasurer’s report, approval was given to submit a request to Osman Clubs and Units to secure funding in the amount of $2,000 to acquire Osman Provost badges and patches. Assignments were made to obtain three quotations for the badges and patches. Arrangements have been made to remove the Ramsey County Sheriff patches from the shirts and jackets, and replace them with Osman Provost patches.

Other News

Osman Shrine held its Third Annual Chili Cook Off at the Roseville VFW on Sunday, October 12. The Provost Unit was proud to have Noble Dale Johnson’s daughters, Elizabeth Johnson and Laura Swanson take 1st and 2nd place at this event. Justin Koehen helped Elizabeth prepare her winning chili. Congratulations to Elizabeth, Laura and Justin, and the other contestants. Also, congratulations to those who won the raffle prizes.

Speaking of Dale Johnson, this past spring, he was a 2014 St. Paul Scottish Rite Reunion Class member. The St. Paul Scottish Rite held its Feast of Tishri on Wednesday, October 22. The Feast of Tishri is the most important annual celebration of the Scottish Rite and serves to reaffirm the basis for this

Masonic organization. In conjunction with this significant event, Ill. Bro. Jerry B. Oliver, 330, SGIG in Minnesota and Jerry J. Johnson, 330, Personal Representative to the SGIG presented Bro. Dale with his 320 Scottish Rite Patent and ring. Osman Provosts join in their congratulations to Bro. Dale for his achievement in becoming a 320 Degree Mason, Master of the Royal Secret.

Dale is now a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a Masonic Body that serves to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. The Scottish Rite provides Dale the opportunity to expand his knowledge of Freemasonry, widen his circle of Masonic friends and to serve humanity in unique ways. Contact Jerry Johnson if you are interested in joining Dale as a member of this prestigious organization.

held on Monday, November 3 at the Osman Shrine Center. The Provost Unit sponsored a table and there were additional Provosts seated at other tables throughout the filled-to-capacity banquet room. The evening began with a social hour which was an opportunity

for Nobles to renew their acquaintances. Several non-Shrine guests were in attendance, so Shriners were introduced to them and conversations ensued about the Shrine and the benefits of membership. At Hufli, each table

assigned their carver, and a turkey and all the fixings were consumed. Traditional pumpkin pie was served as the dessert and no one left their table hungry! It was stated more than once that the turkey dinner served at Hufli is the best Masonic dinner around. Thanks to Chef Mike Lynch and his servers who do a great job!

Rochester Area Shrine ClubGreetings Nobles and Ladies,

I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season! Hope all is going well with you and your families. This being my last newsletter

for the 2014 year, I wish to thank everyone who has helped me throughout the year! It has been a great experience for me and my lady Tina. I also want to thank ALL of the RASC members who have attended the events this year. We always had a great turnout and I hope everyone had fun at each of them!

We just got done with our annual Hufli and Turkey Shoot, we had a great night and lots of great food. We had 60 plus Nobles and guests attend the event which was held at the Lost Spur. Thank you for everyone who helped out with this great event and

all those who brought along a guest, let’s hope we can get a few new members based off their experience at this event!

By the time you are reading this, we will have completed our clubs semi-annual fundraiser. This is combined with Herbergers Community Days! I’m sure that we will have had another great turnout of Nobles to help make this another successful event!

The biggest event of the year is coming up very soon, the Christmas Ball! This is a Black Tie/ Suit event and will be held at the Rochester event center on Friday, December 19th! It will begin at 6:00pm, with social hour lasting until 7:00pm. There will be installation of the newly elected officers at 6:45 followed by dinner at 7:00pm and the program will start at 8:15. We will have entertainment starting right after the program has concluded at about 9:00 pm. We have sent out invitations to all members. Please make sure to

send your RSVP and payment back as to secure your seats. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Lastly, make sure if you have not yet done so, please pay your 2015 dues. The dues for our club are only $15.00 for the year. These help offset some of our expenses throughout the year, and so your payments are needed and appreciated! Contact myself or Russ Billings if you need to make your payment yet.

Legion of HonorThe Hufli dinner

in November was well attended by the LOH! Thanks to all who attended. Our November meeting was held at Angelo’s in South St. Paul. Since this newsletter will be

sent in before the event, I am confident we will have a great turn out to confirm the nominees for the 2015 LOH officers, and enjoy the company.

The nominees are;

Commander: Todd Swedberg

Vice Cmdr: Dave Hellstern

Adjutant: Wiley Davis

The Club & Unit Parade of Glory, is December 9th and the Imperial Potentate will be visiting this event! All LOH and Osman Nobles are encouraged to attend.

LOH December meeting and installation of 2015 officers/Holiday party will be at Mancini’s on December 18th. I look forward to seeing all of you then.

Once again I have to thank all of Osman’s Nobles, along with the great LOH Nobles, that I have had the

pleasure to work with and serve in 2014 as Commander of the Legion of Honor. As always, it has been my honor to serve. I have had a wonderful time, but need to transfer the advancement of this unit to another, for their new perspective and improvements.

The Legion of Honor would like to invite any new or current Noble to attend, any of our meetings or events, to see what it is we do, and the pride we all feel in doing it!

With Pride and Honor,Commander Jim Moore

Circus Mommy’s and Daddy’s

The Mommy and Daddy e-mail went out last month. The traditional postal Mommy and Daddy mailing will arrive between Christmas and New Year. Each year Circus Mommys and Daddys provide tickets for kids and families that would not be able to see the circus on their own. Last year was particularly heavy with requests from individuals as

well as our normal groups and agencies. Please help out as you are able. We have never turned away a needy child, and we are not going to start now! Please become a Circus Mommy and Daddy! PS: This year’s pins have been totally re-designed! “Ya gotta have one!”

Here are some important circus dates to keep in mind.

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the NileSeason’s Greetings

from Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the Nile!

A memorable time was had spending two days with Supreme Queen Marsha D. Sowers at her official visit in October. I am so proud of all of the Ladies of the Household for all of their hard work and devotion to our Temple.

We are looking forward to placing our SECOND gold plaque next July 24, 2015 at the Shiners Hospitals for Children®-Twin Cities. This year alone, SQ Marsha has presented SECOND gold plaques in both the Shiners Hospitals for Children®-Erie and Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Cincinnati. Each plaque represents a one million dollar donation from the Daughters of the Nile Foundation to the Hospital.

The Daughters of the Nile Foundation Convalescent Endowment Fund (CEF) now exceeds $30 million, enabling the Foundation to contribute even more to the care of the special

patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children. In 1994, the CEF was only valued at $9 million. This is a tremendous feat for the Daughters of the Nile!

The Hospital Requests and Sewing Committee at Mat-Sha are collecting gift cards for the Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Twin Cities in $5 to $10 dollar ranges from McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendy’s and other fast food restaurants, as well as $20-$50 dollar Target and Walmart cards, and school supplies, toys, books, puzzles and batteries. Anyone wanting to donate is more than welcome. Please contact Princess Tirzah Dawn Hurd at [email protected] for details on how to contribute.

We have also been busy sewing exam gowns and altering shorts for the patients – you just add snaps up the sides and they become hospital friendly! Each item is made out of light weight flannel and are very cute!

Please remember the children we work so hard for at our Shiners

Hospitals for Children®-Twin Cities, as well as their families, as we celebrate this holiday season.

We have kicked off our Nut sales again this year – just in time for the holidays! Princess Royal Diane Anderson has selected the Mascot Nut Company to supply our order. Order forms are available from Princess Diane, and she will be out and about selling nuts at the various upcoming Shrine holiday events. Proceeds go to Mat-Sha Temple No. 62. Please contact Princess Diane at 612-868-5658 or [email protected].

We were saddened to receive retirement papers from Noble Al Porter and Pr. Jeannine Porter this year. On behalf of our Temple, I wish to thank & recognize Noble Al & Pr. Jeannine for preparing and serving our luncheons over the years. We have thoroughly enjoyed the meals made with their loving hands. Your service to Mat-Sha Temple No. 62 will be greatly missed! In addition, we would like to thank Noble Mike Horn for his assistance with serving and his willingness to lend a hand no matter

what is needed. We look forward to our Princess Royal, Diane Anderson taking the lead with our after meeting lunches!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! Don’t forget the gift that keeps on

giving is the gift of membership in Daughters of the Nile. Our next Ceremonial is coming up in February and we have a few candidates in waiting and would love more. Our household has a very large roof -- why not give that special Lady in your life

the gift of membership in Daughters of the Nile!

Keep shining!

It’s kettle time.

The Salvation Army of Austin kicked off its annual kettle drive Monday with a $900 donation from the Austin Shriners and a new goal: $125,000 over the next two months through kettle donations and mail appeals.

Lt. David Amick said the kettle drive is but one of several large-scale campaigns Salvation Army volunteers are kicking off over the next few weeks, as the Salvation Army will also be involved in upcoming coat and food drives.

“It’s been crazy,” he said.

The annual kettle drive accounts for about a quarter of the Salvation Army’s annual budget and helps fund Salvation Army programs to help the community.

Amick said the Salvation Army was still looking for volunteers to help participate in the kettle drive. Volunteers have signed up for about 700 hours thus far, but the Salvation Army needs to fill 2,000 more hours. Amick said almost all

of the kettle bell stations in the Austin area are indoors, so volunteers likely won’t have to worry about the weather.

Some area organizations don’t worry about things like the weather, however. The Austin Shriners, who are a part of the local Mason Lodge, annually raise thousands of dollars for the Salvation Army, often from a single day of bell-

ringing. Last year, the Shriners gave about $8,400 to the Salvation Army.

“It’s always been a treat to help the Salvation Army,” Brad Stout, president of the local Shriners, said.

For more information about volunteering, contact the Salvation Army at 507-437-456

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

Wow, what a fun time we all had in Kenyon! It was really great that fifty-seven of you were able to join us for this wonderful event. The tour of Kenyon’s historic home, the Martin T. Gunderson House was absolutely delightful. The home is on the National Historic Register. It was interesting to hear that the home was pre-cut and came to Kenyon in a railroad box car in the early 1900’s. The Kenyon Area Historical Society

has been in charge of the house interior and the tours since it was organized in 1976. Thank you, Frank Peterson PP for paying the admittance fee for all of us to tour this home.

Following the tour, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Schweich Hotel and an inspiring presentation by Jane Ward who is a trainer for the “Helping Paws Dogs” organization. Jane brought her service dog, Tori, with her to demonstrate the many commands service dogs are taught. We were impressed to learn how valuable service dogs are for people with disabilities, and what a huge commitment it is to

take on the responsibility of training these dogs. It really was an informative day. Thank you so much to Auxiliary Board members Sue Doty and Betty Porter and Auxiliary members Bev Peterson and Cora Lee Monroe for planning and hosting this great event. Thank you to Cora Lee also for making all of the centerpieces and goodie cups. The centerpieces were given to people who attended the event.

It is that time of year again when we are filling Christmas stockings with toys for the children at Shriners Hospital. Thank you to everyone who has donated toys to the Auxiliary to make this mission possible. We could never do this without your continued support all year long in addition to the extra toys we have received during the holiday season. Thank you Jennifer Hill for the bags of toys you brought to our Oct. event. Thank you also to Ellen and Tom Maine for the wonderful toys we received from your MG Car Club. Several years ago, Ellen and Tom influenced their MG Car Club to collect toys and donate them to our Auxiliary for the Children at Shriners Hospital, and the Club continues to give us their annual donation of many, many toys just in time for us to include them in the Christmas stockings. Thank you also to all of you who helped make the stockings and filled

the stockings. If you are interested in assisting in the distribution of the stockings, please contact Marjorie Park.

Our last Auxiliary event for 2014 will be our Holiday Party at the Mendakota Country Club on Dec. 6. This will be another great event, and what a wonderful way to start your Holiday season. It will be an opportunity to enjoy a fabulous lunch, be entertained by the musical group “Flute Cocktail”, and have time to visit with friends in an elegant setting. Thank you to Elizabeth Ekholm, Kathy Flicek, and Betty Porter who are planning this event. I hope we see you there!

Please mark your calendars now; so, you don’t miss the last event of the year!

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

The Osman Womens Auxiliary Board is wishing all of you and your families a wonderful Holiday season!

The Osman Shrine Clowns held the first annual Past Potentate’s Roast. This year we roasted Illustrious Sir Dick Thompson. The event was held at Mancini’s Char House. As guests started to arrive, they mingled and laughed; it was a joyous scene of friends getting together for a great cause. Ill Sir Dick Thompson chose to have the money raised to be donated to the Child Life Department at the Twin Cities Shrine Hospital. The Child Life department supports 5 different camps, prom

night and various different activities throughout the year. As we laughed with the different roasters throughout the evening, we realized that Ill Sir Dick Thompson has influenced a lot of people in his life and in his time as Osman Shrine’s Potentate. We want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate this night with us.

Dear Fellow Nobles, While serving as Imperial Potentate, I find myself spending a lot of time traveling from one event or meeting to the next. This is worthwhile because it provides opportunities to meet so many of you – on both the fraternal and hospital side – and really see how important Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children are to our members, staff, patients and families. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open concluded just days ago in Las Vegas. Of course, it was a top-notch professional golf tournament, and the winners took home a handsome purse, and countless memories. But it was more than that – it was a tremendous opportunity to share what it means to be a Shriner with many new friends, and a chance to showcase the impact Shriners Hospitals for Children can have on the lives of children.

Our National Patient Ambassadors, Joe Dertinger of Minnesota and Katie Ladlie of Missouri did an outstanding job of sharing their stories – and of challenging the pro golfers to learn a bit about living with a disability in a very personal and tangible way through an event called “The Hospital Experience.” I want to commend and thank everyone whose months of effort and planning were clearly evident throughout the highly successful weeklong event. We have asked nobles to remember their pride in being a Shriner – the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and all it signifies is certainly a source of pride. This event should make us all proud to be Shriners, especially because of the awareness it builds worldwide. Congratulations to the 2014 Shriners Open Champion, Ben Martin, on his first ever PGA TOUR victory. Martin finished at 20-under 264 to bring home the trophy.

Prior to the golf tournament, we were in St. Louis for the cornerstone laying

ceremony for the new hospital, which is scheduled to open early next year. It was an honor to witness our brother Masons from the Grand Lodge of Missouri perform this particularly moving and traditional ceremony. More than 700 Masons and Shriners from the Midwest were on hand to witness this special occasion. It is always wonderful when Masons and Shrine-Masons can gather and work together. We look forward to continued progress on the St. Louis hospital, and to opening day.

Emphasizing Membership It was our pleasure to attend the 2014 Shriners International Membership Seminar earlier this month. More than 300 nobles and their ladies representing 118 temples attended the interesting and informative event as well as representatives from the Grand Lodges and Daughters of the Nile. I would like to challenge the temples to strive for 100 percent participation in 2015. Congratulations to seminar leader Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder, Chairman of the Imperial Membership Committee and Imperial Oriental Guide, for presenting such a successful event. As we mentioned during the meeting, the most important work happens now – after the participants have returned home and shared what they learned with the nobles at their temples, and plans for implementing the information are made. As we stress at every opportunity, remember why you became a Shriner, and make the fraternity and your part in it a source of pride in your life.

We spend a significant amount of time attending Shrine Association meetings. These events are a great opportunity to learn more about what is happening in the fraternity at a more local level. It is important to remember that we are hundreds of thousands of members strong – and each member is important and valued. It was my pleasure to meet

the August Shriner of the Month Carl E. Hall of Ainad Shriners at the recent Great Lakes Shrine Association meeting. The Shriner of the Month Award program was initiated to honor our local unsung heroes – the “everyday” Shriner you can always depend on to do the work that needs to be done. Temples and hospitals can make nominations for this award. To learn more, please visit Shriners Village.

Remembering Our Soldiers At the end of the month, we will participate in the annual wreath-laying ceremony, along with leaders and members of the International Association Legions of Honor, at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The monument recognizes services of an unidentified soldier and honors the memory of all soldiers who gave their lives in war. We were honored to be part of a similar event last June at the Canadian National Military Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario, honoring the memory of Canadian soldiers lost in war. Thousands of our own brothers have served in the armed forces and we pay tribute to each of their sacrifices. It is a privilege to honor all the veterans and current soldiers, who risk their lives for a peaceful world.

Being Considerate and Appreciative As Shriners we strive to live with a sense of brotherly love and charity (consideration) toward one another. I would like to ask that we extend kindness or politeness even further, especially to our staff. If you have questions, concerns or suggestions about projects, programs or publications, please remember to express them in a positive, considerate manner, and remember that our staff works very hard

and does the best they can to do what we ask of them. As my next message will be in December, Cheryl and I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support, and your participation in your fraternity and philanthropy. Here in the U.S., we officially celebrate Thanksgiving in November; our Canadian friends and families held their Thanksgiving holiday early this month, and other countries have similar times for reflection and gratitude. We all have

much to appreciate and be thankful for, and we wish everyone a meaningful time on their special day. Thank you for all you do for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Yours in the faith,

Dale W. Stauss Imperial Potentate
