from the editor“Happy Christmas – well almost” I just can’t stop quoting lines from my recent productions with West Huntspill Players, but did feel this one was particularly relevant for the time of year! With only a few weeks to go I am busy preparing myself for the festivities and events happening locally.
It still amazes me how much goes on in our town, throughout the year and the fantastic support given by so many hardworking volunteers to ensure the events happen. There will be plenty of opportunity to stretch your vocal chords this month at various locations or to get into the Christmas spirit by booking to see one of the local bands. With Father Christmas putting in some local appearances there will be something for anyone wanting to get into the Christmas Spirit.
If you are a local club or charity, don’t forget to send me your regular news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach over 9,000 residents in Burnham, Berrow, Highbridge and the surrounding villages.
LocalReach also offers competitive rates for local businesses who wish to advertise in the magazine – please get in touch if you would like to advertise your business in the January issue. LocalReach Community Editor for Burnham & Highbridge - [email protected]
the deadline for the January issue is 7th december!

Saturday 15th December will see the next open
air event taking place at Marine Cove. The Friends of Marine Cove will be hosting a Community Christmas Carol event from 3pm in the garden. The event is being held to raise money for Barb and the RNLI to support these worthy causes and show appreciation for all they do for our town. We will have a Tree of Memories and would invite you to come to the garden and tie a ribbon to a branch in memory of
a person or event that is special to you. There will be mince pies and mulled wine available and local choral societies coming together to make the Christmas Spirit fill the skies. We would like to bring together all sectors of the community. If you would like to be involved or would like more information contact Jonathan Smith at [email protected] or visit www.marinecove.org.uk.
With the work Jacqui Strong has been involved in at Marine Cove, she has recently been presented The
Mayors Cup in recognition of outstanding effort towards the Burnham on Sea entry for Britain in Bloom. Jacqui said “I was surprised to receive this award and feel honoured to have been given it, however it is made so much easier owing to the support of all the volunteers who assist with the project at Marine Cove”.
If you are interested in holding an event in the garden during the forthcoming year contact us for more information or if you would like to volunteer in the garden.

Members of West Hunstpill Players have been celebrating after achieving awards for their Spring Production See How They Run written by Philip King and directed by David Jenkins.
Entry to both the Regional - Rose Bowl and Phoebe Rees Trophy were put forward and adjudications received from both. As a result nominations were put forward for Best Actor in a supporting role from the Rose Bowl Awards for Alistair Murray’s role as the Rev Humphries, which Alistair successfully beat the competition from many clubs around the South West and awards were presented at the Winter Gardens.
During October the Phoebe Rees held a presentation evening at Taunton Racecourse where members of West Huntspill Players joined clubs from all areas across Somerset including many of the larger societies. Nominations had been received for Best Props – Jill Woolley, Best Wardrobe – Maggie Richards, Best Actor in a supporting role – Alistair Murray, Best Actress in a supporting role – Jacqui Strong and lastly an entry for the Endeavour Award.
West Huntspill Players came away with the Trophy for the award of Best Actress in a Supporting
Role presented to Jacqui Strong for her interpretation of Ida.
“I am thrilled to have been presented with the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, I really enjoyed performing as Ida, but this would not have been possible without such a good cast. I knew from the beginning when I saw the casting and read the script that the play was going to be one of the best I had been involved in” said Jacqui Strong.
The group would like to encourage more people with an interest in Amateur Dramatics to join the society. Whether on stage or behind the scenes – a warm welcome would await you. If you would like more information contact [email protected]. The group will shortly be reading scripts for the next performance in Spring 2013 and will meet at the Balliol Hall West Huntspill on the First Monday and Third Thursday from 8pm.

Previously I have written about broadband speeds, but feel that it is worth another mention. On numerous occasions recently I have visited people who are not getting the internet speeds that they are paying for. Do you know is that if your broadband connection is not on the main incoming BT socket (known as the master socket), speeds may be reduced by the use of internal cabling?
Often I meet clients with no problems inside their home/business with the computer at all, but are simply on an old broadband product which does not give them the best speed for their money. For example, I recently visited a customer who was capable of receiving 17mb on their broadband but was actually only receiving 2mb due to the old broadband product they were on. After a tenuous call to their provider, they did acknowledge that the customer was not on the best package currently available, the customer changed the
product, which in turn reduced the customer’s bill by over £15 per month and brought the speed up to 17mb. I am afraid that this is a common occurrence across many broadband providers – some will not accept that better speeds are achievable, even when they are; in which case, sometimes the only way to remedy the situation is to move to an alternative provider to gain the best value for money.
If you need help or advice doing this, feel free to e-mail us on [email protected] quoting your phone number, post code and who your current broadband provider is and we can advise what speed you should be getting and also provide other advice if required. If you want to research this yourself, I recommend the following website: www.samknows.com this website will provide information on speed based on your phone number and/or post code.

Sedgemoor Ramblers Our AGM was held at Fyne Court on 20th October. The day began with a leisurely ‘Walk & Talk’ around Fyne Court with Somerset Countryside Ranger, Steve Sudworth who told us about the conservation work
undertaken at Fyne Court and at other National Trust sites. This was very interesting and greatly enjoyed by everyone.
A full committee was elected at the AGM in the afternoon and holidays and plans for the year ahead were announced. The current programme finished at the end of November. The Winter programme, commencing December, offers a full and interesting selection of walks.
With thoughts of Christmas fast approaching, the group are looking forward to the next social event, Christmas Lunch at The Old Pound Inn, Aller on 9th December and our festive Mince Pie Walk with mince pies and bubbly on our last walk before Christmas.

During early October 2012 100 surveys were completed by Sedgemoor Community Support at Apex Park in Highbridge to check out visitor views on the park. Sedgemoor District Council are pleased to announce that the results were excellent and a real boost to the staff who work hard to make Apex an enjoyable, clean and nice place to visit. The headline results were:
·84% of those surveyed were repeat visitors. The majority of visitors are keen to see continued
events such as the very successful annual Playday held in the park.
92% of those surveyed rated the landscape as good or excellent
An enormous 98% rated the wildlife as good or excellent
80% rated feelings of personal safety in the park as good or excellent
75% felt that disabled access was good or excellent
Car parking, information and signs, the children’s play area and skate park, were also given visitor seals of approval.
Areas for us to concentrate on were the cleanliness of the toilets, making the public more aware of the information about the park available
on the Sedgemoor website and availability of dog waste bins.
Apex park, one of Sedgemoor’s two green-flag award winning parks, covers approximately 42 acres and offers visitors a chance to relax away from the bustle of Burnham-on-Sea and the beach. A large free car park extends from Marine Drive to within 100ft of the lake.
Harley Cook, Parks and Open Spaces Policy Officer said ‘Sedgemoor District Council aims to manage Apex Park for the benefit of the community and encourage wildlife so these results really support the work we have been doing. Lots of activities take place in the park such as the Sunday morning dog training club and Model boating on Wednesday evenings (summer) and Sundays. Angling is also a very popular park activity with twenty-one new fishing platforms having been constructed in January 2009 around the fishing lake. The children’s play and skate park are also big draws to local families so we want to make sure all the parks facilities are kept in a great condition to the enjoyment of all’.
Apex Park also has an active Friends group, if you would like to get involved please contact 01278 436420 or [email protected]

Sedgemoor District Council is studying the latest proposals from National Grid for a new high voltage connection between Bridgwater and Seabank near Avonmouth. The council, as a body that must be consulted on the plans, will respond formally after the matter has been debated at a Full Council meeting on December 11.
Ahead of that meeting, members will be briefed on the details by National Grid and the Council’s officers and consultants will look at the technical implications of the draft route which will go underground for an eight kilometre section beneath the Mendip Hills. The Council has also arranged to meet members of the local parishes to understand their reaction to the route.
In the past, Sedgemoor has said it recognises the need for electrical transmission and accepts that the decision on the route will be made nationally not locally. The Council is assisting National Grid as it prepares its proposals for examination by the Planning Inspectorate with the aim of arriving at
solutions that balance where possible the national requirement with the need to protect the amenities of local communities.
A press release announcing the draft route said National Grid had listened to the views of local people in coming to its decision and understood people’s concerns about overhead lines. Where these are proposed, National Grid has said it will work hard to reduce visual impact by routing the line carefully and possibly employing the new T-pylon design.
Commenting on the announcement, Sedgemoor District Council Leader, Cllr Duncan McGinty, said “We now need to digest the information thoroughly and come to a view on the implications for our area. We understand that the final scheme will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate by National Grid at the end of next year and we are keen to work with Grid to make sure we get the infrastructure that is so desperately needed for a secure energy supply with as little negative impact on our local communities as possible”.

As all of our thoughts start to turn towards the approaching holiday season, many sellers are wondering whether to ‘take a break’ and take their home off the market until after Christmas, believing that no serious buyers will be looking at this time of year. And ever year, as I am out and about carrying out Market Appraisals, from the beginning of October onwards I also routinely hear prospective new sellers saying the same thing – indicating that they are serious about selling their home but that they are going to hold off marketing it until at least the New Year, if not the Spring.
Understandably, both existing and prospective sellers feel that as the evenings will be dark, and gardens especially will be looking rather sad, the opportunities for selling are slimmer than they would be if they waited until the evenings began to draw out and Spring was in the air. After all, both the New Year and Spring are times traditionally associated with new beginnings, or a time of change, and quite rightly this can often have a positive effect on the property market.
However, we would urge some caution on this perspective. Regardless of the time of year, or the state of the economy, life inevitably goes on. All of the personal events that happen to each and every one of us - that keep the property market moving regardless of wider economic influences - some happy (such as job relocation, marriage, a new baby) and some sad (such as redundancy, divorce, or a bereavement) don’t stop just because it’s Christmas time. There will always be buyers who need to find a property to buy sooner rather than later, whatever the time of year, and those committed
buyers will not give up looking just because Christmas and New Year are looming. But they may (and often do) get frustrated by the lack of choice available to them at this time of year.
So, realistically, what can you expect as a seller if you do decide to ‘bite the bullet’ and go on to the market now? The honest answer is that viewing activity on your home may be slightly less frenetic than if you started marketing at a more traditionally busy time of year. But the flip side of this is that you can be assured that every viewing will count - as you will only be dealing with serious buyers, rather than serial viewers! Surely it is better, and less disruptive to your home and family life, to have less viewings but with serious buyers, than it would be to have more viewings but with casual lookers?
You will also have the reassurance of knowing that you are not in competition with countless other properties that are new to the market, and that therefore you will have a slightly more captive audience. The more sellers hold off marketing their home during October, November and December, the more the market becomes flooded with new properties from January onwards. This gives the buyer more choice and therefore more reasons to decide not to view your home. And we believe that each and every viewing should be considered a potential selling opportunity, regardless of how optimistic (or otherwise) we are beforehand. I have lost count of the number of times that viewers have been to see a property just to ‘rule it out’, only to become buyers when they fall in love and make an offer for it!
And what could be nicer and more appealing for a prospective purchaser, than viewing a home
that is looking cosy, warm and welcoming, all decorated for Christmas. If that doesn’t make them feel that this time next year it could be them in the home, then the property really isn’t for them, but at least we have the reassurance of knowing that they have seen it in the best possible light.
Finally, consider the economics of supply and demand. More choice equals more supply. If the demand in terms of the number of buyers stays the same, which is likely in the current property market, but supply rises (as it always does in the New Year) those buyers will have more choice and this could potentially thwart selling prices.
So, the bottom line is that you may have the best chance of selling for the best possible price right now.
Therefore, our advice to you is to take full advantage of the potential temporary imbalance of supply versus demand by being one of the properties that is actually new to the market this side of Christmas. If you are already on the market, become proactive and consider repositioning your asking price thereby making it more attractive than ever to those good, active buyers!
At CJ Hole Offices will be encouraging all of our valued vendors, and our prospective new vendors, to take advantage of the situation, to be strategic, and to position their property for an early sale at a time when demand is likely to outstrip supply.
If you would like to discuss this with me personally, please feel to call me anytime on 01278 780000.

The Burnham on Sea Town Team today learnt that they had been successful in their bid to become an official Town Team Partner. This has been endorsed by Tessa Munt MP and awarded by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
The new status will enable the town team to benefit from access to a support package the Association of Town Centre Management has prepared for Town Team Partners. The support package promotes shared learning and best practice with help from retail experts and other town teams from across the country, and some funding to develop proposed town-centre plans.
Beverley Milner Simonds said "the faith shown by Government in the Town Team concept and teams like ours is heartening. We have worked really hard to formulate realistic plans and are now energised that some of the plans suggested by residents earlier in the year will now be able to get off the ground.
The plans highlight again the need for a single point of responsibility and accountability for delivery in the town - a town centre manager tasked with the project and stakeholder management, design and successful delivery of a range of business, resident and visitor focused capital and revenue projects. It is going to be hard relying so much on the good will of volunteers to get things done - but we will be pressing on with these ideas"
The next Town Team meeting is still to be announced but will be 1830 in The Care Centre, College Street, BoS
The support package will be targeted immediately towards the following plans:
• Establishment of town team constitution, bank account, office sundries, meeting rooms for one year and other items which require membership fees;
• Indie Retail initiatives and memberships to promote independent retailers (Christmas shop crawl event)
• Mapping of current occupancy type and strategy to address concerns written and implemented with landlords/estate agents
• Work with Chamber of Trade on late opening initiates, "Night on the Town" and
removal of barriers to on-street trading• Purchase of street accessories (barriers,
cones etc which have to be hired from other councils)
• Planning for Sandy Sunday events in 2013 • Marketing strategy for a program of events; • Removal of bylaws to prevent street
busking; • "High Street on Tour" in spring 2013• Work with BiARS to develop more live
events; A Burnham Chamber of Trade spokesman
added, "This is suberb news. The Chamber is looking forward to working closely with teh Town Team to furtehr develop teh proposals and bring benefits to businesses and shopper sin Burnham town centre".
Local MP Tessa Munt said, ‘It’s great news that Burnham-On-Sea has been selected as a Town Team Partner. This gives the local team a well deserved boost in their efforts to make the important changes in the town; many of which have been proposed by Burnham people themselves. It is a great example of localism in action.’

Between 1801 and 1831 the population of Burnham doubled from 653 souls and has continued to increase steadily ever since. In order to service the needs of the growing population a number of businesses grew up. As this was a time long before the introduction of mass production of goods, and bringing them in from outside the area, all essential items that were not made at home were certainly made by someone in the immediate neighbourhood or a nearby community. Because it was necessary to travel to other towns and villages to buy and sell goods at their local markets and not everyone owned a horse and cart, there were very few places that did not have a local carrier who in common wit some other folk would need the services of a saddler and harness maker or a blacksmith and wheelwright for their wagons and horses.
By the middle of the century, most villages had their general store and larger places even boasted specialist shops. Burnham had two ordinary shops and two drapers, one of which proudly proclaimed itself to be the Burnham Emporium. In addition to two bakers, one butcher, two carpenters, three boot and shoe makers and a blacksmith there was also a tailor and several inns.
A common occupation was that of a beer retailer, which was invariably carried on in conjunction with other businesses, not necessarily that of shopkeeper, some were farmers or drapers. Some were the wives of men employed in another trade or occupation. A good many of the smaller pubs started life as beer retailers until a point was reached when what had been a profitable side line became the principal business. A goodly number of other traders wore more than one hat, one extreme example being John Barnstable of Brent Knoll, who in
1883 was listed as grocer, draper, builder, stone mason and postmaster – an interesting combination. Another combination that only appears once is Henry Watts who in 1883 is listed as a bath chair and donkey proprietor. What happened to the bath chairs and the donkey after that year, or for that matter, to Henry Watts is not clear.
During the late 19th century and early 20th century Burnham and Highbridge were spoiled for choice when it came to locally supplied services – rather different from now when we have no specialist greengrocers and fruiterers, butchers or grocers and are reduced to one fishmonger and one baker. Although we may blame supermarkets for the loss of these there are many that have gone for no other reason than our changing needs and fashions – apart from the obvious, such as saddlers, wheelwrights and coopers. Many places had their own dressmaker, when did you last see a straw bonnet maker??
The large number of boarding house keepers existed to provide homes for the large number of working people who needed somewhere to rest their heads; it was not solely due to the holiday trade, although those of the bath chair hirers and Madame Rosetta, the phrenologist almost certainly were. Many of these trades may have gone, but take heart, at least we still have our donkeys on the beach.
