Our Mission
Together we are committed to supporting, with integrity, compassion and teamwork, the success of Franklin Academy’s Band Students through our voluntary efforts as parents, family, and friends of the FA Band Program.
We sincerely hope you all enjoyed the Holiday Concerts performed by our very own Franklin Academy bands at the Louisburg College Auditorium as well as the concerts performed in house. The students’ and band director’s dedication to the band certainly came through loud and clear as each band performed beautiful and complex pieces with Christmas spirit. We are grateful to Dr. Evan Feldman and Al Paolantoni for the clinic time they spent with the high school students and for performing with the students at the concert on December 8th. Thank you Ms. Burn for providing this great opportunity to the band students. And thank you for all the time and energy you give to the students as well as the encouragement and inspiration that you give each student individually and to the band as a whole. Many thanks to the parents and students that volunteered from helping to organize the concerts to loading and unloading the musical equipment and setting up. This team work only adds to the success of the whole event. And A Success It Was! Congratulations FA Band Students for such fine performances! (See last page for concert photos!)

RAISING AWARENESS
The FA Chapter of the TMMHS is initiating a community service project to raise awareness for the NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY. This year the NC Symphony has experienced financial constraints as have many of our local arts organizations. Here is their selection of concerts to raise awareness by encouraging people to buy tickets.

TRIANGLE YOUTH SYMPHONY & ORCHESTRA CONCERT DATES
Excitement … Anticipation … Camaraderie … Sharing the Love of Making Music … approx. 30 Franklin Academy students from 6th grade to 12th grade … nervous and anxious to audition for the Central District Band on January 9, 2010. Some veterans, some novice. From the smiles, it appeared that all had a great time. And from the results, it appears that Franklin Academy produces some fine musicians. It is a long day in a gym filled to the rim with students from nine counties in the central portion of North Carolina. Anxiously awaiting the results … when will they ever be posted … and then, three of the those students earn a position in the concert band, two in the wind ensemble and three of them earn a position in the symphonic band. And one student, Matthew LoCicero, earning 2nd chair tuba in the symphonic band will go on to audition on March 6th for the All State Band.
Accolades: Philip Norris is the first 6th grader to make the band from FA; Matthew LoCicero is the first FA MS student to make it 2 years in a row; Kyle Ellington is the first FA HS student to make it 2 years in a row (also made it in 8th grade!); Ben Harris, 1st year auditioning, made 4th chair symphonic!
It is most unfortunate that the clinic was canceled due to weather. Many students were greatly disappointed … But let it be known that they, clinic or no clinic, earned their position and that is something no one can take away! AND WE ARE PROUD!!!

EL SISTEMA
“El Sistema this year has been quite an experience! From
preparing the rosters, to pairing up the high schoolers and the students and teaching, I love to see the kids coming to the lessons ready to learn and excited about music. It 's even cool when the teachers can create a personal friendship with the students they teach which makes the program more like a mentoring
" I think that once we get the ball rolling and ideas flowing, Tri-M will do a lot more things for the community that surrounds us. We have already impacted people by going to a nursing home during Christmas time. We really enjoyed making the residents happy!!" Zoë Harris

"Band!!!!! the best period of the day! I love coming to class and playing music! What could be more fun? It's really nice when people who care about music can come together and help each other within their sections to accomplish a wonderful work of art!!!"

THE WOODWIND TRIO
The Woodwind Trio was chosen to perform at a master class on Saturday, January 23rd, for Windscape, a professional woodwind quintet based in NYC. They also performed a pre-concert to the Windscape concert on Sunday, January 24th. The Woodwind Trio is composed of Katerina Kouloustroubis (flute), Rachel Norris (clarinet) and Austin Radosta (bassoon). This was sponsored by the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild (www.rcmg.org/master-classes.htm).
EXTREME EXPERIENCE … Ms. Burn Shares
Over the Christmas track out, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe. I thought it would be nice to share with you some of my experiences and the reason for my travels. The Conductor’s Guild is a professional organization for both educators and professional orchestral/wind conductors: an alliance of those in the field. This year, 2010, they had their annual conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. A colleague of mine was a guest speaker for this year’s conference. The conference was fabulous! There were student conductors that took part in many workshops with one of the finest conducting teachers in the world, Jorma Panula, from Finland. Some of the most famous orchestral conductors are students of Jorma Panula. I had the opportunity to observe these sessions! As part of the conference, the American participants were offered a 2 day cruise (yes, in the middle of winter in Scandinavia) to Oslo, Norway. The cruise was a wonderful excursion into the “great white North”! Unfortunately, much colder than we all had anticipated, but very beautiful. The temperature remained -10 C or colder and snowy! Welcome to Scandinavia! The ship was a treat and overall an enjoyable experience to see that part of the country. There were lots of informative sessions regarding music, conducting, Sibelius (the only famous Danish composer) and even a baroque dancing class to better understand why the music was written the way it was! (No, I did NOT show those pictures of me dancing!) I also had an opportunity to see the opera Tannhauser, by Wagner performed by the Royal Danish Opera Company. The Danes have recently built a new opera house that puts the Metropolitan Opera house to the test! It is truly spectacular! While in Europe, I was able to make a side trip to Prague. Wow…this city truly is the “Jewel of Europe”. Prague is one of the few cities not completely demolished during the war and the Prague Castle is breath taking! Upon returning to school, I took a class day and shared my pictures with the students.
Thought it would be nice to share my experiences with you, too!

On September 24 the high school concert band officers took a trip to Leesville High School to watch and observe how they run their band. This trip was organized to show what our band was based off of. Three years ago, Mrs. Burn got the system we use today from the director at Leesville, Dave Albert. So, seeing the way they run things, gave us a better understanding of how the system is supposed to work. When we arrived at the high school, we observed their role call and announcements. Their attention to detail was extraordinary. They had nearly 100 people in the band and when the manager called role, our 13 members were the ones making the small noises. They finished a 100 person role call faster than we finished ours with 31 members. They each showed amazing integrity towards their group. When someone had an announcement, no one made a sound. They all wanted to hear what the announcer had to say. When someone talked, it was not about their weekend plans or what so-and-so said to so-and-so. They talked about balance of the piece, or key signature markings, or details to make that class run better as a whole. When they rehearsed outside on the field, there was still no talking. We watched them from a hill and I think we talked more than them. Leesville runs on block scheduling, so their class lasted for nearly 2 hours. And the attention at the beginning of the class was the same as at the end. And if seeing the way they acted in rehearsal wasn’t enough, we talked to the senior officers face to face about their views on the band. The integrity shown on the field, couldn’t even match what came out of their mouth. The way they talked about the group, and how they handled things, was so mature. They never have problems with sneaking in role numbers, cell phones, or students disrespecting anyone. I think that talking to their officers gave our leaders a better idea on how to run the band and how to make our band experience a better one.

Applaud … Support ... And Promote the Creative Spirit
With excitement in the air, the Franklin Academy Band Students prepared themselves for the Concert of the year at the Louisburg College Auditorium. Their incredible performances were evidence of the musical knowledge and teachings of an extraordinary band director. Ms. Lisa Burn shares her professional musical world with these students. By making possible opportunities to work with other professional musicians, our students are exposed early to a variety of musical methodology. This is very enlightening for them and will strengthen them in interacting with other professionals in future involvements.
