Dear Parents and Guardians Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the FACES Summer Fayre at the weekend. The weather was, thankfully, kind to us and a huge thanks must go to all the members of FACES who ensured that the fayre was great. Hope everybody got to see the fabulous advertisement that some of our ACE pupils produced and the brilliant job Mrs Carter did advertising on FaceBook. I would also like to thank the firefighters from Arundel Fire Station who came along and supported our school at the Summer Fayre. We are very lucky to have such supportive people and I would like to thank all of them for coming to our school on Saturday and for all they do for our community.

Luke 12:33-34 - Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Sometimes being the loudest members of a community doesn’t necessarily make you the best members of the community. I would like to thank those who also support quietly in the background and are humble. Humility is an interesting concept and, as Alex Ferguson once said, it is not always the noisiest neighbours who are the best neighbours! That reminds me of local things!

I believe that everyone can make a positive impact in life and the difference is between those who do and those who don’t. As one member of staff once wrote for her dissertation, those who are ‘radiators’ give out loads of positive energy and are great to be around, unlike those who are ‘drains’! I wonder which one are you and I wonder, if you look closely around you, which of your friends are radiators and which ones are drains?

Worthing Children’s Parade is this Saturday, 16th June. Please do come along and support our school – the theme is anything Harry Potter!

BPS Team Rule Ok

I wanted to thank the BPS team who were fantastic in helping us to move the tables from the church to the school. Thanks to Archie Lee’s mum, Logan’s mum and his granddad who were also fabulous. It was a real team effort and going that extra mile for others really does make a difference.

ACE band is here

We continue to work very hard on developing lots of aspects of provision at ACE. I am a strong believer that we must always continue to evolve. Sometimes that can be a painful thing and sometimes we need to makes changes in order for that to happen. Hopefully you also enjoyed the appearance of our fabulous band at the Summer Faye on Saturday.

What is hope?

Most people understand hope as wishful thinking, as in "I hope something will happen." This is not what the Bible means by hope. The biblical definition of hope is "confident expectation." Hope is a firm assurance regarding things that are unclear and unknown (Romans 8:24-25; Hebrews 11:1, 7). Hope is a fundamental component of the life of the righteous (Proverbs 23:18). Without hope, life loses its meaning (Lamentations 3:18; Job 7:6) and in death there is no hope (Isaiah 38:18; Job 17:15). The righteous who trust or put their hope in God will be helped (Psalm 28:7), and they will not be confounded, put to shame, or disappointed (Isaiah 49:23). The righteous, who have this trustful hope in God, have a general confidence in God's protection and help (Jeremiah 29:11) and are free from fear and anxiety (Psalm 46:2-3).

Along with faith and love, hope is an enduring virtue of the Christian life (1 Corinthians 13:13), and love springs from hope (Colossians 1:4-5). Hope produces joy and peace in believers through the power of the Spirit (Romans 12:12; 15:13). Nearly every single member of staff did help, and this all began on the very first day! THANK YOU, everybody.

Bronze, Silver and Gold Housepoints this week

I would like to say well done to all the boys and girls who have won their housepoints badges this week. Keep up the good work.

Swimming at the Lido

I was fortunate enough to teach Year 6 last week. As part of my role I try and teach all the classes during the term. I love being in the classroom and it always makes me realise it is a real privilege working in our school, and working with our children.

As part of teaching Year 6, I had the chance to take them to their swimming lessons at Arundel Lido. It is such a beautiful location and we are lucky to have the opportunity for our children to learn there.

Tri Golf Champions

Last week, some of our boys and girls in Year 3 and 4 produced a magnificent performance to beat some much bigger schools and win overall in the southern area. We now go on to the school games where we will not only represent our little school and our town, but also the whole of the southern area. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Mr Tillyer and Mr Cox for coaching them, the parents for supporting us there and also Ms Fell for completing an advance training session for them. It definitely paid off.

We are the only school in our area ever to qualify for the School Games for two years running! We have qualified more than any other school in our local area, three times in five years and what is even more impressive is the fact that we have done this in athletics, hockey and now golf. Not bad for a little school in Arundel.

I would like to say a special well done to a number of the children who clearly showed ACE values. It was fabulous to see them show perseverance, resilience and determination not to let team ACE down, or their teammates.

"No matter how small an act of kindness or generosity or simple positivity you put into the world, you will make a difference. And yes, there is a way to make a better impact. To do that you have to realize and admit that you can’t do everything by yourself. In a world that cultivates digital narcissistic individuality

you have to let your own ego fall away. Because the world is not about each of us, its about all of us".

Stonehenge inspires

Isaac and Chloe had the opportunity to visit Stonehenge over the holidays and it was great it inspired them to make these two lovely models. I love it when children talk about history in such an enthusiastic way and both children were delighted to tell me all about their models. The children also found this website really useful so it may be worth a click…

The Great Britain game is brilliant learning for young engineers, see how well you can do https://www.ssgreatbritain.org/full-steam-ahead

Florence and her super work

Little Florence in Rainbow Class is a real character and it is great to see how much she loves her mathematics. Well done for working so hard and it is lovely to see how you are so determined to improve yourself at such a young age.

Worth a trip

I would strongly encourage our ACE families to take a visit to St Nicholas’ Church to see their tribute to our fallen heroes from World War 1. It is an amazing scene and well worth sharing with your children.

Goblin Car continues

Thanks to Richard and Tim for continuing to help us improve and develop our Goblin Car. This week we were looking at fixing the engine on and putting the belt on. The children really enjoyed it and it was great to see them so enthusiastic about constructing the car.

Aidan and Luca produce masterpieces

Both these boys have been working very hard to construct long pieces of writing and in this case the shortest story is still just over 19 pages. The stories are clearly influenced by some of the books and films the children have seen. It was lovely to see both boys show lots of endurance and then have the attitude to go back and check their own work.

Rachel and the beach

I love this 3D picture that Rachel has created to represent the beach. This is very timely as the children in Rainbow Class will, in a few weeks, be going to the beach as part of the Flying Start programme. Our current Rainbow Class will get the opportunity to meet the new 2018/19 Rainbow Class.

Morgan and his super writing

Morgan has really turned a corner and is producing some lovely writing now. It is fantastic to see that he recognises where and how he has developed and what potential he has to now share with others his brilliant mind. Great work, Morgan, and I am very proud of your attitude towards your learning.

Year 4 visit our partner school in Northwood

The boys and girls in Phoenix Class had an opportunity to share their ideas, experiences and knowledge with the boys and girls in Year 4 in our partner school in Northwood Primary School, Erith.

As a school, we believe this partnership is a great way to bring a bigger picture of education to life for young learners, and the benefits of doing joint projects with our partner schools are wide-reaching. For our ACE pupils, partnerships can help develop their core skills and an appreciation for cultural diversity; and for teachers, collaboration is a useful way of growing professionally and sharing knowledge and teaching best practice with a national context.

Amelie and her fabulous letter to parents

Well done to Amelie in Year 1 who wrote a lovely letter to parents about encouraging them to attend our summer fayre. By the time you read this HT blog we will know how successful she has been. I think it is personally a very good piece of writing considering she is only Year 1. Well done Amelie.

Amelie also produced a piece of writing on instructions, which would not have looked out of place in a Year 4 class. She is a very able girl and it so lovely that she wants to work hard to improve her skills.

As a school and as parents, I do feel we must teach a child the importance of hard work so that they can also appreciate the value of effort. No one who succeeds in life does so without working hard. But teaching a good work ethic doesn’t happen by accident.

As with most things in life, the example we set as parents is one that is imitated by our children. Even teenagers, who we think don’t listen to us and we no longer have influence over, are watching us every minute to see if our actions match our professed values. Therefore, if we want our children to have healthy work ethic we have to first model a strong work ethic for them. We do this best by promoting the belief that that hard work is virtuous and by believing in the moral value, benefit and importance of work, and its ability to strengthen character. That means we need to always model doing our best, do what we commit to do, and be consistent in showing up at work on time with a good attitude.

Georgina in Year 4

Georgina in Year 4 has produced some lovely pieces of artwork linked to the theme of rivers and volcanoes. She has produced some lovely 3D-style artwork and I was particularly impressed that she was able to describe the different process she undertook to complete the work.

My Times are in They Hands My times are in Thy hand, Whatever they may be, Pleasing or painful, dark or bright As best may seem to Thee.

My times are in Thy hand, Why should I doubt or fear? My Father’s hand will never cause His child a needless tear.

Poppy and her map of Arundel

One of the things which I believe is so important is for children is to learn about their local town. Whether they live in Arundel or not, it is our local town in terms of where the school is. Year 4 were fortunate enough to have one of our governors in school this week, Colin Heriot, who is a former mayor and knows lots about Arundel to share his knowledge with them. This inspired Poppy to draw her own map of Arundel. I particularly like the red building in her map.

Attendance

Every week we will be publishing weekly attendance data for each of the classes. The class that has the best attendance will be awarded the Attendance Cup during Sharing. Please do join us to celebrate the children’s achievement!

Butterfly 99.71% Rainbow 97.92% Dove 97.41% Unicorn 98.33% Eagle 98.33% Ichthus 86.64% Phoenix 85.42%

Brenda comes in for the fourth week to train our children

We have been very lucky to have a professional musician come in for the last four weeks to teach our Year 3 some songs around the piano. It has been lovely seeing them grow and develop as a group. I am really looking forward to the concert that they are performing in.

The Three Amigos get ready to present their journey to the new parents

Abi, Thomas and Finley had a chance to present their lives at ACE to our new parents on Wednesday. I am confident that all three will do well and hopefully by the time you read this, they will have done that!

Some work by Jazmine (working with the lovely Va)

Jazmine has been working really hard recently and does particularly well when she gets the opportunity to work with Va. She has worked very hard on developing her writing and it has been fantastic to see her self-esteem grow too. Well done, Jazmine.

Isaac and Chloe

Well done to Isaac and Chloe who recently visited the ship known as SS Great Britain. Isaac drew a lovely picture of it. Meanwhile, on her adventures to different places, Chloe also made this beautiful bit of jewellery.

Some facts about this marvellous ship in honour of the hard work of Chloe and Isaac.

SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship, which was advanced for her time. She was the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. While other ships had been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship. She was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, which she did in 1845, in the time of 14 days.

NSPCC come into ACE

The NSPCC came into the school last week to remind children about what they do as an organisation and that they are there for all our ACE pupils. Jane came into school to tell us about their ‘Speak out stay safe’ campaign. Please help us to always remind our children that if they are worried about anything they can call ChildLine. ChildLine is a private and confidential service for children and young people up to the age of 19. You can contact a ChildLine counsellor about anything - no problem is too big or too small. Call free on 0800 1111.

Jacob and his half term holiday

I just wanted to say well done to Jacob for producing some lovely writing about something he did over half term, including helping Charlie, who drives the Tuk Tuk, to raise money for one of our charities “The Feast Project”. Well done, Jacob.

Super Cricket

Our Year 5 (and some Year 4) made it to the semi finals of the cricket southern area finals. This was a pretty impressive achievement considering that many of the schools were 3 or 4 times bigger than ours. Well done to all the children who took part, Mr Cox for training them and all the parents and grandparents who came along and support us.

Buddy’s Big Workout

Every class took part in Buddy’s Big Workout to raise money for the NSPCC. Thank you to Mrs Ward and Mrs Jones for organising. Thank you also to all the parents, families and friends for your sponsors. Money can be brought in to school up until 30th June. Thank you again - it’ll make a big difference.

A Day out with Friends – A recount from a boy in Year 2

Isaac made a fabulous powerpoint which I would like to share with you and some of the key points of what happened during the day.

Introduction Isaac was very excited as it was his first visit to an attraction with free Blue Peter badge admission, which allowed him to go free (so well worth getting those Blue Peter Badges still!). He decided to go to Amberley Museum with family and friends.

Who went? Ben, Rainbow Class with Chloe; Nelson, Butterfly class with Isaac; Zoe and Jack in Phoenix class; Hudson starts Rainbow Class in September. With Ben and Jack’s Mummy and Daddy and our Daddy, enough of us for cheap group admission

What we did? Although it was the holidays we still did lots of fun learning. It is always good to do learning. We learnt about electricity. Basically we were pressing lots of buttons and then lots of strange things happened. Things started moving and we worked out if you pressed the button it made electric current flow by creating electro magnetic field. It even made things move, and lights light up.

Telegrams and Morse code Chloe visited the Post Office to send a telegram. We wondered if anyone in ACE ever sent or received a telegram?

Learning Morse code, converting English into the dots and dashes of Morse code.

There was also a real Morse code machine but Daddy was too busy laughing at us trying to send a message to take a photo!

We did lots of other things and we worked so well as a team when we came up against tough challenges. Thank you everyone for being ACE.

What is happiness?

Happiness is believing Happiness cannot be gained It is earned by your heart Happiness can be found When you are close to God and obeying his words Happiness can be found When you show your kindness to others Happiness can be found When you are nice to those you hate Happiness can be found When you help others Happiness is love and kindness Learn to enjoy what ever comes along Happiness is not far away from you

It is close to you heart Happiness is serving God for all eternity and once you have fulfilled your wish then you are the happiest man.

Yours sincerely,

ASimpson Andrew Simpson Headteacher

‘Desperate’ schools look overseas A DfE commissioned study has found that school leaders are hiring from abroad as a "last resort", with a number of heads interviewed saying they would prefer not to hire from overseas but are doing so out of "desperation". Among concerns, it was noted that cultural differences were identified as "potentially problematic". The Telegraph notes that schools are struggling to replace the “tens of thousands” of teachers who left England's schools before reaching retirement age last year.

Russell Group students in pay premium Figures published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies show that graduates from Russell Group universities earn around 13% more on average than those from similar institutions. It was also found that within five years of leaving university, men from the highest earning universities make more than £50,000 a year – and women around £40,000 – while those graduating from the lowest earning institutions typically take home below £20,000. The figures show that economics and medicine students earn around £40,000 a year five years after graduation, while English and history graduates are paid around £25,000. Those who studied creative arts, social care and media earn the least, at around £20,000.

French MPs back school mobile ban French lawmakers have voted to ban the use of mobile phones by pupils in primary and middle schools, in a move they say will boost concentration and help tackle cyber bullying.

School says shoes not needed Torriano School in Kentish Town is trialling an initiative where staff and students remove their shoes in school to make youngsters “feel more at home.” The trial is taking place in the school's nursery, reception and Year 4 classes, but could be rolled out to the whole school. It follows research by Bournemouth University, which claimed 'shoeless' children get better grades, behave better and are more likely to arrive to school on time. Chris McGovern, from the Campaign for Real Education, questioned the stance, saying “learning in one’s socks” is unlikely to help ease concerns over literacy and numeracy.

Ofsted boss: Schools cannot be expected to solve obesity crisis Ofsted boss Amanda Spielman is set to say schools cannot be expected to solve the child obesity crisis, offering that while obesity is a “serious public health challenge” that must be addressed, it is a “complex societal issue that requires more than a blunt response.” Addressing the Bryanston Education Summit in Dorset, she will say that there are “a great many pressing public policy concerns” affecting young people and many “undoubtedly require Government intervention and multifaceted solutions.” But she will insist that they “cannot all fall to schools, and they often are completely inappropriate for measuring at inspection.” This comes with ministers preparing to reveal the national child obesity strategy, with it suggested that one proposal would call on schools to weigh pupils. On the possibility of inspectors taking the weight of pupils into account when assessing schools, Ms Spielman said she “almost choked” at the suggestion.

Most deradicalisation programmes failing A Home Office -commissioned study suggests that at least 95% of deradicalisation programmes are ineffective, including examples used in schools. The Behavioural Insights Team report flagged that facilitators were often uncomfortable dealing with sensitive topics, with teachers in particular afraid to bring up matters of race and religion with their students in fear of appearing discriminatory.

Ban for teacher Teacher Martin Williams has been banned for 15 months for "inappropriately" touching pupils at Olchfa Comprehensive School in Swansea. An Education Workforce panel ruled Mr Williams' actions were not sexually motivated. He was also found to have shone a laser pen in pupils’ eyes and uploaded bogus coursework marks for some students.

Hinds unveils plan to tackle agency fees Education Secretary Damian Hinds has unveiled plans to stop supply teacher agencies charging “excessive” fees, in a move designed to save around £75m a year. The Government is setting up a website where schools can advertise vacancies free of charge, while heads will be given a list of agencies that do not charge fees if supply teachers are later made permanent members of staff. Mr Hinds said he wants schools to "invest more on their frontline". “Every pound that's spent on excessive agency fees or on advertising jobs is a pound that I want to help schools spend on making sure every child, whatever their background, is inspired to learn and to reach their potential,” he added. The Telegraph says figures show local authority-maintained schools and academies spent £840m on hiring agency supply staff in the 2015/2016 academic year.

Private schools spend more for discounts to richer families The Observer’s Julie Henry says private schools are spending millions more on giving affluent families fee discounts than on children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The paper points to school census data showing that £420m goes on non-means-tested academic scholarships, and discounts for staff, siblings, and offspring of senior armed forces personnel and clergy, while means-tested bursaries and scholarships, which are contingent on family income, account for £398m. The latter total, it is noted, includes help for families on incomes as high as £140,000. Julie Robinson, general secretary of the Independent School Council, said: "The total value of means-tested bursaries and scholarships provided by schools has increased by nearly £140m since 2011 and currently stands at £400m.” She added that schools also offer fee assistance to the “squeezed middle” because “having a broad social mix which reflects our society is incredibly important."

Rayner: UC will see 2.6m lose free meals by 2022 Shadow Education Minister Angela Rayner says that up to 2.6m children whose parents are on benefits could be missing out on free school meals by 2022. Ms Rayner is to urge the Government to offer free school meals for all primary school children, saying one in eight who were eligible “will be stripped of their entitlement under the Universal Credit.” Children and Families Minister, Nadhim Zahawi, said: "Contrary to misleading statements, every child who currently receives a free school meal will continue to do so,” adding that “around 50,000 more children will benefit from free school meals by 2022."

Teacher: Educators should nurture characters, not create robots The Observer’s Secret Teacher details the step up from early years teaching to Year 2, saying play-based learning became “a distant memory” as senior leaders drove a curriculum revolving around content that was likely to be on SATs papers. They add that children were “acutely aware of the looming tests.” On teaching Year 1, they say the transition period between the “free-flow” of early years and more formal schooling was too short. The anonymous contributor concludes that teachers should be free to nurture the individual characters of youngsters, “rather than attempt to create 30 robots that will appease education ministers’ requirements.”

Head abused over meal policy Hannah Wilson, head of the Aureus School in Didcot, has highlighted abuse she has faced for banning packed lunches in a bid to ensure pupils have healthy meals. Ms Wilson said she had "received a lot of adversity, both professionally and personally" after the school’s food policy made headlines, saying her "eyes have bled" after reading personal attacks from online trolls. Writing on her blog, she said her school's "values of courage, resilience and integrity have been tested".

Morgan questions mixed-gender school races Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has criticised Merkinch Primary School’s decision to scrap boys and girls-only races at sports days, saying it would discourage children from developing a healthy sense of competition. Athlete Iwan Thomas defended the Inverness school’s move, saying including all pupils in races gives girls the chance to compete against boys at an age where they’re “very similar genetically.”

Ofsted boss: Parents too busy for potty training Amanda Spielman, chief inspector of Ofsted, says some parents are failing to teach their children how to use the toilet before starting school and have become increasingly reliant on nursery staff to show youngsters how. Ms Spielman told the Pre-School Learning Alliance conference that busy parents are struggling to teach children over the weekend and nursery workers need to take a greater role in helping to potty train young children. “Without taking responsibility away from parents, if your child is in nursery every day, toilet training is not something you can do in two days over the weekend, and say boom, it is done. In practice it becomes something that's got to be a bit of a cooperative exercise,” she said. Melanie Pilcher, quality and standards manager for the Pre-School Learning Alliance, commented: "The big issue is we have parents who need help but don't know it." Separately, Ms Pilcher also warned that parents spending too much time online could harm literacy levels among youngsters as they are too busy on mobile devices to teach their children to read and write. She said: “You have only got to sit on a bus to see parents who are on their mobile phones and not talking and interacting with their children.”

MPs call for donor education A group of Labour MPs has called for schools to teach pupils about organ and blood donation to help tackle the "silent crisis" of a lack of ethnic minority donors. Teaching about donation on the national curriculum would provide children with "myth-busting tools that are often vitally needed in BAME communities", their report said.

FA reject call to pick diversity candidate FA directors have turned down a request for positive discrimination in choosing schools football representatives. The English Schools Football Association wrote to FA company secretary Richard McDermott asking that the next ESFA board appointment should seek to identify a “suitable representative with specific expertise in disability and girls' football and to seek FA support in finding a female or from an ethnic minority background”.An FA National Game Board meeting noted the request, but agreed that “the best person should be appointed who has the necessary skills, experience and knowledge to protect the interests of the FA and its investment into schools football”.

Unions comment on DfE’s vacancy cost measures Colin Cranmer, secretary of the East Riding of Yorkshire branch of the ATL, has warned that the DfE’s attempts to reduce the cost of recruitment and help schools avoid "excessive" agency fees are unlikely to address teacher shortages. He said: "'Agencies' take a huge chunk of money out of the school budget because they charge schools in excess of what it would cost to employ a teacher themselves," adding that a free website for vacancies was welcome but would not solve the "major problem" of staff shortages.Geoff Barton, general secretary of the ASCL, said anything which helps to reduce the costs of advertising positions and using recruitment agencies “will be welcome", adding that the costs “are driven upwards by the fact that schools have to constantly plug gaps because of the ongoing crisis in teacher recruitment and retention." MP Emma Hardy, a member of the Education Select Committee, also commented, describing the measures as a "sticking plaster".
