World Cancer Day - 4 February 2012

World Cancer Day - 4 February 2012 is an occasion to unite the world in the fi ght against cancer through raising awareness, educating the public, and lobbying for change. This year Dharamshila Hospital and Research Center celebrated world cancer day in a unique and stimulating way.

This year UICC theme for the occasion was Together it is possible ! – which signifi es reducing premature deaths from cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025. In an attempt to raise a collective consciousness on the theme a multi phase activity was planned.

In Phase - I of the activity we decided to spread awareness among maximum number of people. The next question was as to how can we spread this message across in the most effective way? For which we decided to train the trainers who spend maximum time with the patients. In any hospital setting it is the nurses who form the majority of the task force and are responsible for providing health education, so we decided to stimulate them on cancer prevention and early detection. Our team of nursing lecturers visited various nursing schools and colleges in Delhi and NCR to sensitize and stimulate the fi nal year nursing students on the importance of cancer prevention and early detection. Their myths and doubts regarding cancer were clarifi ed and they were encouraged to spread this knowledge to as many people as possible.

For Phase - II of the activity each school or college visited was asked to send a maximum of 10 fi nal year students for a quiz on cancer awareness, which was held on 4th Feb 2012 A total of 85 students from 8 colleges participated in the event. The winners were given attractive cash prizes. The occasion was also marked by inspiring talks by Dr. S. Khanna, Executive Director, DHRC and other eminent speakers. After a hearty lunch, the participants were given a tour around the hospital where Dr. B. Sanyal explained the latest treatment modalities in radiotherapy. The day ended with a rejuvenated spirit to fi ght and win the battle against cancer and the belief that together it is indeed possible…
