Term 2 – Week 4 Issue 4: 16 May 2019
Principals Report
There has been a lot happening at our school in Term 2.
This week our students in Years 3 and 5 have been taking part in the National Assessment
Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from all states and
territories in Australia take part in the NAPLAN tests which assess our students’ skills in
reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy.
Parents will receive a report later in the year that shows their child’s results. The results will also
show how each child has performed in relation to expected levels of achievement.
Next week we have a number of whole school activities as part of Education Week. It would be
great to see parents take part in the activities at the school with their children. We welcome
parents to our school at all times and Education Week is a special opportunity to come to the
school and see your children at work.
The following week we will be celebrating Reconciliation Week. On Tuesday 28th May, the
children will be involved in an art installation called the Sea of Hands. Further details about the
activities in both of these weeks are provided in this Newsletter.
On Wednesday 29th May, we will hold our yearly Reporting Meeting to the School Community
and utilise the opportunity to get the views of our school community on a range of matters so
that we can celebrate our successes and identify areas where we can improve. I hope that many
school community members can attend the meeting and provide valuable feedback for us so that
we can continue to provide the best support for our students and our school community.
Have a wonderful week.

The Ridiculous Rhyme Show is coming to DSPS Dandenong South Primary School will be treated to a globally renowned children’s show
called, ‘The Ridiculous Rhyme Show’. The show aims to engage a primary school aged

Andrew Crawford. Joe and Andy play First Officer Ditty and Professor Poet on BBC children's
show The Rhyme Rocket. The show is followed by an introduction to television and the

Reconciliation Week, 27th May-3rd June 2019- ‘Grounded in Truth’
On Tuesday 28th May, our students will contribute to an art installation
called The Sea of Hands. We have booked the hands through ANTaR
(Australians for National Title and Recognition) in yellow, red and black.
Students will share stories by indigenous authors and sign or write messages
in support of reconciliation. The messages will be attached to the hands. Stu-
dents will then arrange the hands in the form of the Aboriginal Flag on our
school oval. If weather does not permit the installation on the Tuesday, we
will select a day during the week that is dry enough to install the art, ena-
bling all of the children to enjoy the artwork. The Sea of Hands art installa-
tion has travelled Australia, visiting all major cities.

Communities for Children (CfC) Greater Dandenong Logo Competition
This term, three students from our school entered their Artwork in an Art
competition organized by Mission Australia and The City of Greater Dan-
denong.
Students were asked to design a logo for the above. We sent three entries.
Out of 14 schools, 10 entries were shortlisted and then voted by the
Children's’ Advisory group.
We are delighted to share with you that the entry of one of our grade 6
students, Lindita's logo, received the maximum votes and she became the
first prize winner.
Lindita won a trophy, a family voucher for Luna Park and a certificate.
The most exciting news is that her logo will become the CfC Logo and used
by Mission Australia on CfC media and publications.
Please have a look below at the artwork we entered.
Thank You

In Mathematics, students in Grades 5/6 completed a unit on Transformation. They were asked to design an illustration that they could translate, reflect and rotate.
This is Amir’s work. First, he learnt about transformation, and then he designed images that he would use for his flip book animation. He had to plot each shape on the Cartesian Plane, showcasing his ability to translate, reflect and rotate each. After this was completed, Amir photographed each page to then create a slide show using PowerPoint. The result was an animated flipbook.
Grade 2 students completing engineering tasks where they design different tunnels to create steady pathways for spherical objects.
Grade 3/4 students designing parachutes and testing out to see which one is most effective.
We are excited to be taking part in the 2019
Woolworths Earn & Learn program.
During the previous cam-paign, we were able to purchase some
great resource with the points we earned, thanks to you.
From now until June 25th 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker sheet. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths col-lection box. The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!
We are grateful for your support and look for-ward to a successful program .
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Dandenong South Primary School is excited to be participating.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Online Safety for Parents and Carers
The internet is an essential part of your child’s world – for education, socialising and enter-tainment.
As parents and carers, you can help your children explore their digital world and educate them about how to avoid harmful experiences online and deal with them if they arise. Talk to your children early, and often, about what they are doing online. For tips and advice about how to help your children to stay safe online, go to the eSafety website at esafe-ty.gov.au/parents Cyberbullying Online bullying can take many forms such as sending insulting messages, hurtful images or videos, nasty gossip, or excluding or humiliating others online. Your child may be worried that if they talk to you, the bullying will get worse, or that you might remove their access to the inter-net or their mobile phone. Some signs that might indicate that your child is being bullied include: ● becoming upset after using the internet or their mobile phone, or becoming secretive about their online activities and mobile phone use ● becoming withdrawn, anxious or angry, appearing to be lonely or distressed ● wanting to avoid school or a decline in their schoolwork To find out more about how to talk to your children about respectful online behaviour from an early age, and make sure they know they can come to you about any concerns, go to the eSafety website at esafety.gov.au/parents/big-issues/cyberbullying Unwanted contact Do you know who your child is talking to online? We all want to protect our young people from contact with strangers, especially anyone who could harm your child. Keep up to date with the sites and apps your child is using and encourage them to talk to you if someone online is asking them to do something that doesn’t feel right. Help your child to be alert to the signs of unusual online contact, such as being asked: ● a lot of questions about personal information soon after first contact ● for favours, with reward of gifts and promises in return ● to make contact in other ways, such as online chat and texting ● who shares their computer and what room it is in ● for intimate information ● to keep their relationship secret ● to meet them in person To find out how to block unwanted contact and for a more comprehensive guide to managing unwanted contact go to the eSafety website at esafety.gov.au/parents/big-issues/unwanted-contact eSafety.gov.au
Sexting and sending nudes It is important to talk to your children as they get older about the possible consequences of send-ing or sharing intimate or explicit photos or videos, also known as Nudes or Noods. While sexting may not be as common as you and your children think, it is important to be aware of the risks of sharing intimate images. Even with trusted friends, things may go wrong.
Unwanted sharing of very personal images may result in humiliation, bullying and damage to a young person’s reputation. Once an image is shared, the child loses control of the image, and it may be published anywhere on the internet.
NOTE: Creating or sharing sexualised images of children and young people under the age of 18 years is illegal and may result in criminal charges and penalties. To learn more about how to talk to your child about sexting and sending nudes, and for tips on what to do if your child has sent or received a nude image, go to the eSafety website at esafe-ty.gov.au/parents/big-issues/sending-nudes-sexting Tools, tips and advice You can play an important role in helping your child stay safe online. Being open, engaged and supportive is important in helping them develop good online habits and digital intelligence. Get to know the digital devices your child is using, and together, agree the rules for online access. These rules can be reviewed as the child grows. Most of all, keep the channels of communication open, listen to them and don’t judge.
